    You kneaded your dough, far too much. Indeed, you don't need to knead it at all, just bring it together and no more. Remember, once you add the buttermilk, you're on the clock and your baking soda is reacting with the buttermilk, so the sooner they are on the griddle, the better. If I don't have buttermilk, I'll just use ordinary milk, with a squeeze of lemon juice. The shape of your farls are fine, they'll eat just as well, if not better, than shop bought ones.

    If you can't get buttermilk just add 3 tbsp of lemon juice to a pint of whole milk and leave it at room temperature for 20 mins

      It was actually a pancake griddle but it worked well. I think a griddle would be best but you could try an over

    Made these today March 27/21, Kirsty, and they came out beautifully. I'm a Canadian elder of Irish extraction, so thrilled to branch out to farls from our soda bread. Well-taught, this! (By now, your viddies must be masterful -- will look for more!)

      To get buttermilk add lemon to milk. You can see it 'curdle'. I don't know how much lemon juice, but what I saw it was not that much. Maybe one lemons worth or a bit less.

  • @macartancaughey9993
    @macartancaughey9993 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You don't need buttermilk iv you can't get it just use the same measure of milk and put table spoon of lemon juice and give the milk a stir

    • @gaggymott9159
      @gaggymott9159 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't be a prick....Buttermilk is a traditionally Irish product and is traditionally used in Soda bread....in an EMERGENCY milk and lemon could be used, but it's certainly not preferable....

    • @auntiecarol
      @auntiecarol 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Better still, if you have full-fat milk (as you should anyway... skimmed milk is just water pretending), just churn it yourself. You will then have butter AND buttermilk.
      Heck you can even "churn" it with your fingers. It will probably take about 20 minutes for a 1/ litre. Milk in a bowl and sortr play with it while you watch TV/ listen to a podcast or something.
      Best to use "soft flour" (so standard stuff you use for cakes), not bread flour. Bread flour (which has a higher gluten level) was not really available until the American/Canadian mid-west opened up. Also aids in rising. ALSO.. don't knead the dough!!

      Hopefully you can have another go just add a little at a time and bring it together. You may need a little extra baking powder if adding more flour
