    Mint is so good to grow and use. I have a pot of it growing right outside my front door. Every day on my way to work I pick a leaf and place it in the car vent. What a natural pick me up. It smells so good and gives me a fresh start to my day.

    I just started growing herbs as indoor plants that I take outside when the sun is out. My first 3 herbs are rosemary, basil and mint (although I'm not sure what the variety of mint is). I have a 4th herb, en route from Australia, called Brahmi (which I believe is also known as moneywart). So far, easy to care for: monitor for proper water amounts and proper amounts of sunlight. I enjoyed this video as it is short, to the point and informative.

    A friend gave us some spearmint for tea. It was so good that I was going to ask for some plants, but I did not want to wait, and the spearmint looked so vibrant that I felt confident I could use one of the stems with leaves to start a plant. I cut off all but the top four leaves, place the stem in water for 3 days, then planted it in soil and kept it watered.
    There was never a moment when it looked like it might wilt, it has been steadily growing, and has started to produce new leaves. Now I am waiting for it to begin to propagate new plants.

    This is called the "kratky method" of hydroponics. You will need hydroponic nutrients in order for your plant to actually grow, the water itself does not contain the nutrients required to sustain life let alone grow any bigger. Also if you wanna increase the survival rate of your cuttings make sure to pick up some rooting gel this will assist the plant in creating roots in order to actually grow instead of just sitting there slowly getting more brown till it dies.

      I put some wierd plant only in water thinking it wasn't going to survive in the kitchen/saw it as temporary decor. Boy was I wrong. It's been a year and has grown so much. Perhaps it has lasted because of my mom's crazy way of cooking causing food particles to land in the plant & provide the necessary nutrients?

    There is a difference between growing in plain water and hydroponics as shown in the example. You might get a few roots but the plants need a brief reprieve from constant water, and also need nutrients. Roots don’t like sunlight either.

    • @BaughbeSauce
      @BaughbeSauce 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I had a purple basil in a jar on my kitchen window sill for almost a year. I decided to plant it outside and actually did a couple of cuttings, rooted them the same way, then planted them all outside. The two cuttings survived and the mother plant didn't. It was too used to living in water so it got too much shock being moved to soil. The young roots of the fresher cuttings were more easily adaptable to the new environment.

    I started growing scallions out of curiosity and because I can never get enough of them. Cut off the top third of the stem for your salad then plop them in a jar of water and put under a strong light in the kitchen or on a sunny window sill. The center will grow every day so cut them as you need them. Eventually they grow thinner but will have more juice.

      Can't just use any old water if it's town water would not work
      If you have a small fish tank with a gold fish in you can use that water
      Or if fish tank that has a filter just squeeze the filter out every so often in two gallons of water to feed your plants
      Keep in mind tho once roots are established you can't keep jar completely full because will drown plant
      Plant grows air roots above the water
      Also need paint the jar or use tin foil to block light or algae will grow
      They do sell hydroponics liquid fertilizer but I prefer doing more natural with fish water
      Plus I get to enjoy looking at the fish 😍
      I use this method I fill with leca
      You can use perlite also just fill up to the hose with some pebbles first

      NPK when using fertilizer
      N is nitrogen and always the first number and what you want for starting roots
      P is for phosphorus and the second number and you will chose a fertilizer with the higher 2nd number once it flowers or fruits, 3rd number is pot ash
      Miracle grow is normally 20-20-20 but once you flower you want to jump to like a 10-20-10

    • @jeffccr3620
      @jeffccr3620 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah if your using miracle grow 20-20-20 its 1 teaspoon for 1 gallon of water

    • @jeffccr3620

      What Do the Numbers on Fertilizer Mean? The three numbers on fertilizer represents the value of the three macro-nutrients used by plants. These macro-nutrients are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), or NPK for short. The higher the number, the more concentrated the nutrient is in the fertilizer. For example, numbers on fertilizer listed as 20-5-5 has four times more nitrogen in it than phosphorus and potassium. A 20-20-20 fertilizer has twice as much concentration of all three nutrients than 10-10-10. The fertilizer numbers can be used to calculate how much of a fertilizer needs to be applied to equal 1 pound (453.5 g.) of the nutrient you are trying to add to the soil. So if the numbers on the fertilizer are 10-10-10, you can divide 100 by 10 and this will tell you that you need 10 pounds (4.5 kg.) of the fertilizer to add 1 pound (453.5 g.) of the nutrient to the soil. If the fertilizer numbers were 20-20-20, you divide 100 by 20 and you know that it will take 5 pounds (2 kg.) of the fertilizer to add 1 pound (453.5 g.) of the nutrient to the soil. A fertilizer that contains only one macro-nutrient will have “0” in the other values. For example, if a fertilizer is 10-0-0, then it only contains nitrogen. These fertilizer numbers, also called NPK values, should appear on any fertilizer you purchase, whether it is an organic fertilizer or a chemical fertilizer. What is NPK and Why is it Important? So now that you know what the numbers on fertilizer mean, you need to know why NPK is important to your plants. All plants need nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to grow. Without enough of any one of these nutrients, a plant will fail. Nitrogen (N) - Nitrogen is largely responsible for the growth of leaves on the plant. Phosphorus (P) - Phosphorus is largely responsible for root growth and flower and fruit development. Potassium (K) - Potassium is a nutrient that helps the overall functions of the plant perform correctly. Knowing the NPK values of a fertilizer can help you select one that is appropriate for the type of plant you are growing. For example, if you are growing leafy vegetables, you may want to apply a fertilizer that has a higher nitrogen number to encourage leafy growth. If you are growing flowers, you may want to apply a fertilizer that has a higher phosphorus number to encourage more blooms. Before you apply fertilizer to your garden beds, you should have your soil tested. This will also help you determine what balance of fertilizer numbers will be appropriate for your garden’s soil needs and deficiencies. This article was last updated on 07/05/21 Read more about Soil, Fixes & Fertilizers

      Usually the creepy computer voice indicates someone who either can't speak English and composed their video using Google translate or someone who speaks English but with an atrocious accent. Should such people be banned from making TH-cam videos until they (A) learn to speak English, (B) lose the accent, or (C) pay/persuade someone to narrate for them? For many these options aren't realistic options at all.
      Don't you hate it when you dial tech support and someone with a unintelligibly thick foreign accent answers the phone? Frankly I'd prefer the robot voice.

With all the out sourcing of jobs to foreign countries do we really want to encourage out sourcing jobs to computers? It already happens too often. I won't use the self checkouts at stores for the same reason.

    I do cuttings/clones all the time for many plants even some trees. In my 20's when i first stated cloning my medicinal herbs (cough cough) i used to use a cloning/rooting powder. but have learned that you really dont need it. all you need to do is make sure they get enought light and that the water stays warm. i used to use a heating pad under my cuttings/clones. now i usually ony do it in the spring and summer so the water stay warm anyways.

    Water alone will not give you "endless supply". Plants need minerals to grow which are not supplied by water on it's own. Basic biology. It will grow for a while but start to lose taste and eventually it will die. I came here for the thumbnail because it shows an interesting way to keep plants watered. Wasn't mentioned.

  • @travisfox5034

    This technique can work for growing most herbs and even vegetables. However, chives are not one of them. Chives will rot in water. They produce from a bulb or seed, like onion. The blades themselves will not produce root in water. Stick to woody stemmed herbs such as oregano thyme rosemary or basil. The woodsy stem on them are covered in tiny "hairs" that will grow into roots.

    • @flitterfoot2
      @flitterfoot2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      It's probably because the ones complaining are English. dropping the H in words such as herb sets off an irrational anger that we cannot control, it's like nails down a chalk board.
      its weird but the way Americans pronounce words like aluminium, basil and oregano set us off as well. I honestly don't know why they have the effect, maybe because it's just enough off sounding that it's 'wrong' but right enough that we can clearly understand it.

    • @carpediemlise
      @carpediemlise 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I don't know a thing about growing Herbs inside my home. Don't have a green thumb. Can I use seeds and grow them inside my home? Would like to grow parsley, chives and more. Also cilantro. Could I grow them in red drinking cups? I probably have to buy good dirt. Would I also need fertilizer? I tried growing Tomatoes outside. My husband and I tried several times. Never had any luck. We used good dirt, but they never produced one tomato. After several attempts, we gave up. I live 25 miles away from Abilene Texas. The ground here is very poor. I planted a rose bush. It turned out to be a tree. It looks pity full. It only blooms one time for a very short time. Please send me a reply. Thank you, and have a pleasant evening.

    It looks like you need net pots for this?
    Also, there is a specific sized net pot that fits perfectly in Mason Jars.
    I didn't ever get to try hydroponic growing yet because the nutrients seem expensive but!
    There are natural organic liquid fertilizers you can make from some home ingredients.
    As an example, banana peels that have been left in water for 3 days or so in a container of some sort can be probably be used. The liquid should be strained with a cloth.
    Urine could potentially be the best 'free' fertilizer (gross I know) but it should probably be diluted with water first. It isn't ideal for leafy plants though apparently. Egg shell powder can be added to this I think and if it sits in the sun (or just a sunny location?) I believe this will add a good calcium boost to the ... urine. Not sure if the powder gets absorbed or what.
    Haven't tried any of this but still there are plenty of options that are green and economical.
    I'm still researching. Don't shoot me...
