Today at 70 yrs of age. As a Malaysian born Chinese - still living in the west since 79. Wife Swedish. Looking back my 45 years journey in the west, walked through many broken bridges and have had transparent the differences. I must confess that Mr Lee is so right!
He’s right I’m Vietnamese American born in America. For years I dealt with self-esteem issues, racism, bullying, and overall feeling of being under a microscope and under. It was not until I re-adopted eastern values, re-learned my mother tongue, and traveling and lived in my ancestral country that I developed a sense of belonging, self confidence, maturity, and growth. I felt safe and that I had a support system around me. LKY was right, I strongly encourage Asians living in the West to travel to their ancestral nations to heal from the traumas of their western lives.
As a black woman I agree with him, and always felt that way. After all the torture, abuse and terrorization I went and still going through in France I know that I have always been right. I have liked his speech from the first time I heard him.
I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL!!! MY SON WENT THROUGH THAT IN JAPAN, HE WAS BULLED HAD SELF-ESTEEM ISSUES AND RACISM,AND A OVERALL FEELING OF BEING UNDER A MICROSCOPE AND UNDER...JAPAN WOULD NOT EXCEPT HIM FOR BING HALF JAPANESE AND BEATHIM UP FOR THIS IN SCHOOL,IT WAS NOT UNTIL HE WENT TO AMERICA THAT PEOPLE DID NOT CARE WHAT HE IS...
Beautiful, Lee really understood the struggles of being a minority and what happens to those who lose their own culture ❤ Also, those who have not lived the life of a minority have no right criticizing Lee's words. Though not a equivalency, to this day, Native Americans and Aboriginals suffer the generational trauma from having their roots and cultures almost destroyed - you cannot expect groups with long histories to simply forget and integrate into a new one, as much as you would like to. The key is accepting this fact rather than ignoring it, then we can work together for a more inclusive future than blindly offering solutions that sound good but will never work.
I used to have an English name before I went to the Western country for my education. However, after living a year there and experienced some racial discrimination I suddenly realize that I should be proud to be a Chinese and think like a Chinese. After my first year in the uni I started using my Chinese name again and throw away my English name completely. Some of my Western class mates complain that my Chinese name is difficult to pronounce but I told them your Western name are just as difficult. I also insist that my children use their Chinese name and no English name.
I'm Malaysian Tamil and I support your decisions but this is the problem with the Chinese communities in Malaysia and Spore. Many of them are losing their culture and are adopting foreign values instead. Like for example, many Chinese are not only using western names but they completely stopped using their Chinese names in Malaysia. A lot of them even name their children names that are considered rare even in western countries. At least we Tamil and Malays still use names from our respective languages and are heavily invested in our cultures, to a healthy extent at least. The most i see a lot of Malaysian Chinese celebrating is just CNY, and even then a lot of them just go out to eat at expensive restaurant. And I've also seen this with my friends group: none of my Chinese friends even know anything about their traditions. Only the older Chinese uncles and aunties still practice the original Chinese culture.

I completely agree with his perspective. As a Singaporean Chinese, I once thought speaking Mandarin was "not cool," largely influenced by Western pop culture, especially sitcoms like Friends and How I Met Your Mother. However, after living in various Western, Asian (non-Chinese), and Chinese societies, I've noticed a significant difference in how people treat and accept you based on your appearance. A wake-up call came when a Taiwanese colleague remarked, "You’re Chinese, but you can’t speak Mandarin at all. Don’t you feel ashamed for not honoring your roots?" Since that day, I’ve committed to improving my Mandarin!
Funny and ironic that a Taiwanese said to you that when many Taiwanese youth under decades of Taiwan's DPP anti-Chinese and pro-separatist brainwashing, are now completely denied their Chinese roots and hate on everything related to Chinese. Most recently they even complained about some international food sites using the word "Chinese New Year" and demanded the site to change it. So pathetic and sad.
I lost my culture. Definitely affected my self-esteem. Because if you’re ashamed of who you are, you cannot build strength. There’s no platform to build upon.
I am second generation Chinese in Malaysia. I studied Chinese medium primary school and English medium secondary school. I have studied I studied in Australia, New Zealand and UK and lived there. Like my father I use only my Chinese name given to me by my parents and practised Chinese culture and tradition. I will always be Chinese in body and soul until the day I died proud to be a Chinese.
@@LeSudiste-m2q Just an earthly human is not enough. If everyone will embrace the Chinese culture, there won't be so many wars on earth. Chinese culture is about harmony and peace, while western culture is about individualism and invasion which leads to conflicts and wars.

Mr Lee Kwan Yew, has great dreams and strong convictions on what was needed to forge a new nation comprising of ragtad migrants with different faiths and loyalties. With his intellect and foresight on how he wanted to shape this orphan nation, he dragged his people willing and unwilling from a poor country to a shining metropolis. He was so forceful in his directions that many misunderstood him, even now. He does not need to peer into crystal balls, he was the Crystal Ball. Mr Lee Kwan Yew was always a man in a hurry.

Good for you and the kids! Singapore is a highly developed country with abundant language courses. And the citizens are predominantly of Chinese descent. It should be relatively easy to keep our tradition (including language) for the future generations. Unlike our not so lucky Chinese brethren and sisters in Indonesia. The Chinese culture was literally banned for decades there. Not only unable to talk in their own mother tongue, the younger generation doesn't know much about traditions beside CNY.

That’s why as a Chinese mainlander that grew up in America, I felt sad for Singaporeans when I read that you guys look down on Mainlanders because of how”westernized” you guys are and speak English. Because as someone that grew up in America I cringe when I hear your heavily accented English. No white American would ever see you as an equal. So discriminating against mainlanders for not speaking English is just pathetic when your English is barely passable. And even though I speak fluent English I have never looked down on other recent Chinese immigrants for not speaking fluent English.
@@zeitgeistx5239 I was like that too, till I got a chance to live in Shanghai, that completely changed my world view. China is so much more advanced than Singapore even 10 years ago, and the city is so vibrant. Now china is my favorite place to holiday.
China foreign Minister Wang Yi said before--> It doesn't matter how much you dye your hair blonde, how sharp you make your nose, you'll never become Europeans or Americans. You'll never become Westerners. We have to know where our roots are. Most Europeans and Americans aren't able to tell Chinese, Japanese, or Korean people apart.
Yes but don’t be overly subservient or deferential to them either. The respect and hospitality which are common features in Asian cultures are often perceived in the wrong way leading to Westerners abusing or disrespecting Asians since they seem to think of them as ‘nice guys’ (ie doormats). This is why Westerners like Logan Paul, Johnny Somali and others go and behave like prat’s in Japan. A lot of them go to Asian countries for ‘adult’ tourism and will often cross lines which would not be acceptable in their own cultures. In my view, all of this bad behaviour comes from an underlying view that Asians are somehow lesser. Asians must withdraw their hospitality and respectful ways from Westerners so they are not taken advantage of and abused. Do not treat as honoured guests those who treat you as pests.
After living in Australia for over 30 years, these words from LKY really resonates. Growing up in Australia, the allure of western culture was very strong. I am fortunate my parents sent me to Chinese school on Saturdays and eventually married my Chinese wife. The friends around me who are white washed are suffering a cultural disconnect, unable to connect fully with the westerners and unable to connect with the Chinese community in Australia. It seems the older we get the more we desire to connect to Chinese culture. I can sense it even amongst the friends who do not speak Chinese, but without the language it's quite impossible.
I was born, raised as a child in The Netherlands, Dutch is my mother-tongue ... and then almost at high school, my parents decided to migrate to Australia 😥. There I continued high school then university, gained a PhD and was university lecturer for 25 years So I lived successfully, but never happily. I always wanted to come back "home", in my own culture & language, Dutch values and ways. Somewhere I didn't needf to spell my "funny foreign" name 5 times, and where people could say my name, As you know, while Anglos are themselves a migrant group in Australia, English and Ango values rule in Australia. That's proudly shown on their flag 🇦🇺. So not only Asians, but even a Dutchman (nearest neighbour) feels this "othering" that Aussies treat migrants wth ... even ones like me wth acceptable blonde hair and white skin. English "exceptionalism", frequent cultural arrogance, and racist ideas of superiorty etc grew in the Britisjh Empire days which, even now, many Englishmen are STILL proud of ! Ignorant to the shame of muchof their Emipire's history. I know as a teacher of Chinese students in Australia, that life is ofen difficult and cruel for Asians livng there. Much more than mine. eg.a Chinese student came into my class late apologising in tears for lateness, because she had just again been SPAT UPON by young white Aussie males on a Melbourne tram on her way to university.. Often happens, but the victims are afraid to repot it.. No-one cares Yet almost all Australians will tell you it's not a racist country 😂 Since coming back home to Amsterdam, I am so haooy to be where I belong, at home, not treated as a foreigner. And people can spell my "funny" name So it's not just the racism in Australia (though I'm sure it doesn't.help.) I'm a Westener, Western values etc, but NOT English values !! Like Mr Lee Kwan Yew, whom I've admired for 50 years, I'll never be an Englishman, and certainly not a "real" Australian! And,, hey, I'd never even want to be one either. I have 2 passports: one. Is Dutch, the other is Australian, and lies in my sox drawer expired unused. When i travel to Asia (I have a second house in Philippines), I don;t want people to think I have "Aussie" values 🤗.
There's nothing wrong with this but it illustrates why western countries must be tighter on foreigners entering and living here. What good does it do for us to benefit people from different nations who do not support traditional western values of freedom and liberty? The west has its problems with leftism but it let you in and allowed you an education you'd never have received in your mother country.
Wdym by white washed tho? Because we both speak the English language and I’m half Polynesian and half white. Dad is half white mum is a quarter but I just say halfcaste. But what is white washed? That sounds like a woke term, but I’m feeling it is not.
@@theon9575 Thanks for sharing your story. Apologies for generalising when referring to "westerners". To be honest, I personally haven't really experienced much blatant racism in recent memories. I am fluent in both English and Chinese, hence I don't have trouble finding my community in Australia. I can understand it might be more difficult for a Dutchman. Something I find very common among anglo descendants is they tend to feel like their governing systems and culture is the epitome of civilisation. Because of this hubris, they've failed to understand and learn the values of other cultures and systems. The obvious example is, democracy = freedom and authoritarian = dystopia. 1. They never bothered to understand how the systems in countries like China, Russia, and Singapore work, and why it exists. 2. They never bothered to visit those countries and try to understand the local people and culture. 3. They fail to understand that "freedom" means different things to different people. To some people freedom is being able to express their political views freely. To some, it may mean being able to walk the streets at night freely without being harassment. 4. Every system has its own merits and trade offs. 5. Democracies can become a uni-party like what Australia, UK, and USA are right now. Authoritarian countries can become a meritocracy, like what China, Russia, and Singapore really are. I could go on, but this post is getting too long.

Wise words as ever from LKY. He beautifully articulates the difficulties faced by children of immigrants: the trauma of not being fully accepted into either culture, the lack of linguistic bonds with their "home country". Language anchors you into a culture and if you only speak one language like English, you lose that culture. I come from a country with a tiny but vibrant Chinese community and I appreciate the fact that they identify fully with the country but also strive not to lose the traditions that make them unique.
It is much easier to see nowadays, seeing how China and many other Asian countries have surpassed Western countries in many fields, and yet Westerners STILL judge Asians based on what their "values" are: "they have no life", "they overwork and are boring".. But what's ironic is Western countries are starting to collapse, and the "balanced" Western lifestyle was simply a facade based upon the Western hegemony that relied on countries to exploit for cheap labor. Hence, why Western countries are starting more wars to try and subjugate more countries to work for them and feed the military machine instead of creating their own wealth without exploitation.
They only reason why the colonial westerners aren't working as hard is because their governments have been looting other countries (natural resources and human labor). That's why they have been able to enjoy high standards of living while not working as hard. They have nothing to brag about because the lifeblood of their prosperity is theft. But as you said, it is now changing.

My father is an Asian immigrant to Australia. He practically rejects his cultural heritage, only ever interacting with his culture by speaking his parents' language. And I can't blame him for that because he and his parents have had to, and still do, work extremely hard to be in the fortunate and comfortable positions they live in today. But while my grandparents joined Asian communities, formed friendships, and travel overseas to be with extended family, to continue engaging with their culture, my dad did not. So not only am I not Asian at all, despite looking it, my attitudes fostered at home and with friends are not Australian enough to connect with the average Aussie. I may be half-white, but I look 100% Chinese and have an extremely "neutral" culture. Most of my handful of friends are 1st gen immigrants or 2nd gen like myself. I connect with these people the most I think because there's a lack of expectation that comes with the culture, we're just a bunch of cultureless nerds who come from similar, but varied backgrounds. Sure, some of them still speak their mother-tongue, sure even fewer participate in traditional customs, but ultimately it's more of just what they do with their family, not something they embrace, live and breathe day-to-day like their parents or grandparents do. It's not really a part of their image (well, aside from how they look) when we're together; if they didn't "need" to do those things, they wouldn't. I tried to learn Mandarin in high school to connect to a broader Chinese heritage, but as said, I'm no different to those around me who don't know Mandarin either, so I feel I was bound to fail in that pursuit (doesn't help that I didn't put enough effort into it despite my motivation), and 3+ years later all I know is like, a handful of phrases that are useless in actual use or without the context of inside jokes which my friends would have forgotten anyways. I don't know what to do with this introspection other than to share my experience under this topic, but yeah, just felt relevant and I hadn't thought about this for a while.
I know my cultural heritage and conciously reject the parts that don't make pragmatic sense to me. (As I reject the parts of Western culture that don't make sense to me) But by knowing the language and culture and identifying primarily as my ethnic group, no one can take it away from me.
You know? You are still an Asian Australian, and you must never forget that. I’m sure u know ur culture well, and if u don’t then you should count ur blessings because I bet you know way more then those of black American ancestry. They don’t know there own tribe or language, they were brought to there country on ships by folks who bought them from Africans….. You still have a lot of culture bro, im half white half maori and I don’t speak my maori language but I know a lot of our customs.
Not too late to relearn if you can through your grandparents. Let me tell you, they hold a wealth of knowledge or through other means if you must. You are never too old to start again. You are quite far along in that you are aware of the loss of your cultural identity and remember, that is half a battle won because most do not even realise it. But realising it and not taking action or rather feigning ignorance I fear is worse. Your dad and your immediate environment may have influenced your upbringing to some degree, however, what you do now is your choice not anyone else’s. If you want to change and learn your traditional ways from your dad’s side and adopt some of it even, the world is your oyster. Of course, it will be difficult and of course, you’ll face obstacles and feel like giving up mid-way through. But if it makes you a happier person, is it not worth the effort? But if it means you are imparting cultural knowledge and values to your future generations, is it not worth the struggle? Well, it’s up to you really. 😊

People don't realise but languages is not just communication it's your identity. Our languages are embedded into our very biology and it evolves with us. That's why colonialists always destroys the language because it affects more than your ability to communicate, it affects your ability to reason. The Englishman is reading Shakespeare in old style English completely absolved and you're reading it going like "what the hell is this" 😂
I'm guessing that the "biology" is supposed to be metaphorical, since specific human languages (e.g. English, Chinese, etc.) aren't quite literally embedded into our biology, only our ability to produce and utilise them in areas like the Broca's and Wernicke's regions. For an extremely long period in human history, languages have basically been the default unit of grouping ethnicities. Speakers of Proto-Indo-European would have likely shared same if not similar/closely related identities, but as time went by and their languages diverged, their ethnicities and identities diverged with them. Evolution of languages cause identities to evolve and vice versa. The very reason why ethnolinguistics is a field, and the very reason why conquerors try to kill off languages and assimilate them in many cases. Just wanted to add some extra detail I know to this comment
Leaving a comment for the TH-cam algorithm so that even more people can watch this, wholeheartedly agree with what LKY said. All Chinese, in fact, all Asians should listen to what LKY had said in this video and let that sink in. Ironically, quite a number of those overseas/non-mainland Chinese, especially the younger generations, who mostly only speak Chinese languages, are the ones who unappreciative of their China Chinese roots, while ignorantly, blindly worshipping foreign cultures, etc, tend to turn a blind eye to the bad things of the foreign countries while being very harsh to their own. I think it's really important for Chinese to learn Chinese, to learn about their Chinese roots since a very young age, to be proud of their own Chinese heritages and aware of their hardships, and then also learning foreign languages, cultures like the English ones to expand their worldview and value system, to actually know the goods and bads, pros and cons of every sides, to understand LKY's point of view.

Both Singapore and Philippines are relatively Westernized nations in Southeast Asia. Even Filipinos don't use chopsticks; many in the big cities no longer teach Tagalog, Cebuano, Kapampangan, etc to their kids. Cultural clothing aside from barong has long been forgotten (malong, weaved patterns, etc) and replaced with American fashion. The Singaporean Chinese diaspora of the older generation do retain traditional Chinese values but it is not visible in the younger generations, though they were required to learn Chinese as a second language The problem is the lack of what is known as 家教 (teaching by the parents) who used to shoulder this responsibility in the past, and this responsibility is normally pass down the generations. This trend had now stopped as the busy working parents (both working in most cases) had depend on the modern schools to do this duty. They had not. So the young Chinese speak mandarin Chinese but do not practice the traditional values.
Can you please tell us what are these "traditional values"? I have a feeling you are actually talking about traditional customs like 7th month. Yes, we lost a lot of customs. I don't think we lost the values.
@@sart3735 Customs or practices such as 7-month prayers are not the Chinese values that are sometimes called the Confucius ethics. Examples of the traditional Chinese values will be respect for elders, parents and teachers, frugality, loyalty to family and nation, study and work hard, save to spend & not borrow to do so, repay debts promptly, and other virtuous values. Perhaps you can get hold of the book 三 字 经 (Three Character Classic) for an interesting read. Some of these writing (with their English translation) are extracted here for a taste: 人 之 初 , 性 本 善 。 (Men at their birth are naturally good). 性 相 近 , 习 相 远 。 (Their natures are much the same; their habits become widely different). 苟 不 教 , 性 乃 迁 。 (If foolishly there is no teaching, the nature will deteriorate). 教 之 道 , 贵 以 专 。 (The right way in teaching, is to attach the utmost importance to thoroughness). etc..... Thank you for this timely video. Back in the 1970s I wrote a high school history paper on China and made a closing comment on how China had to abandoned its own cultural roots to fight the west by adopting two western ideals of communism and democracy. In order to survive, we had to adopt the scientific thought process to catch up. We had to think like them to know how to fight them on the battle fields and in the market place. I’m sure I was responding to the cultural Revolution and it broke my heart to see how our heritage was being destroyed from within. Luckily, Deng xiaoping changed the course of that disaster to a cultural revitalization of today. We Chinese in the west grow up “ bananas “, yellow on the outside but white on the inside. Like it or not, we’re often reminded that we ARE CHINESE and not part of their society. In our zeal to succeed in life and perhaps to honour our parent’s sacrifice to us, we gave up much of our dedication to our heritage. I’m ever thankful that China has regained its cultural heritage and has created a Confucian meritocratic society. It has given me back the pride in who I am.
A similar thing is happening in South Africa as we speak. I’m a black South African women (27) born and raised, many of us speak our mother tongue but the language of the economy is English because of Apartheid and so English is important and many of us are trilingual. As a result many black South Africans believe they are South African and not African and it’s crazy! Black South Africans aspire to be like African Americans so bad and I just don’t understand why?? We’re slowly losing our African roots and values. And other African countries see it too… it’s sad. The American Dream is so big in Africa that citizens of other African countries use South Africa as a stepping stone to go to America…
The power of US propaganda has brainwashed many people in the world. Everyone should have a dream for their future, good or bad, one has to work hard to make his dream become real. America is big and there is space for anyone who wants to have a life adventure in America.
every country who feels superior to another country is just a product of the US. or a Vessel of the US..its what they want you to think...we and they...
Worst, some are colonially brainwashed people that thinks that they r white n look at D US as their savior. But history shows that they really don't care n even short changed them. I meet folks from the Philippines in my life, have some friends etc.., I feel sorry for them. Their minds been colonized along time ago first by Spain and Catholicism and second by American Culture. They are a odd bunch for Asians.
While the rest of Asia has managed to free themselves from colonial era, Philippines is still chained to its colonial past, Filipinos still yearning for Americans (and to lesser degree, Spaniards). We're not really going to move forward if we keep clinging on our colonial past, we're just isolating ourselves in the process.

Many young Singaporean Chinese don't see themselves as Chinese anymore. That includes my 17-year-old nieces. The constant western media they consumed had shaped their world view since young. This is a result of our education system. Ironically, part of Prime Minister Lee's policy... and the ministers that came after him.
His policies made Singapore what it is today, a successful and advanced country. On this subject, he explained himself very clearly, so it's up to the young Singaporeans to accept the wisdom he left behind.
For some reason its mainly Chinese that are falling for this. Yes, also got Malays and Tamils that are uninterested in their cultures, but the number is much less as compared to Chinese
What do you mean your nieces included don’t see themselves as Chinese? Look at your colour, hair and eyes! It is just the upbringing, don’t link it with LKY’s policy.

I wholeheartedly agree with Lee that someone who loses his Asian identity is a shameful thing. As a university student i majored in Asian American studies (same major as Ali Wong😊) so i could gain a better understanding of how I belong in America i came from an immigrant family. What I found was that Asian Americans really have their own ethnic identity were neither completely Asian or American and are independent of mainstream america culture. We take from each other and reinvented our culture like black culture or Latino culture which are uniquely American I believe that Asian Americans are the same...we are family oriented yet we can be open to new ideas and respect individualism
Do you know that most Europeans who moved to America also lost their identity? The top ethnic stock of americans is german, not english or british. There there are hordes of other nationalities - dutch, swedes, belgians, italians, all who became anglicized. Not to mention the other british don't speak gaelic anymore. English is a foreign german tongue to britain. I speak 4 languages and i feel defeated when i think in english alone. My native language is Tamil and when i don't think in Tamil, i feel i'm an imposter. I understand LKY.
That's why it's called E pluribus unum, out of the many one. If everyone identified by their own ethnic group you would have a Balkanised country that would break apart.
When Cary Grant (not his real name), the famous movie star, was at the top of his profession, someone who knew him, before he was a movie actor, said to Grant, "Hey, I knew you. You did not have the accent you have now, and you did not have the personality you have now. You are a pretender!" Grant replied, "No, not a pretender. This is who I want to be."
I appreciate this man for keeping his heritage close to his heart. As a Black Man, I see so many ethnic groups with powerful histories suddenly just no longer care. No solid identity, just a mass of whatever may be "popular" at the time. Now, I understand that people can be friends or respect or even marry people of other groups, but it should never be placed on a pedestal to the point where suddenly, it's what's preferred over their own people. If there is a divisive sense between people's, then they shouldn't always just toss everything to the wayside and run off to others to fix their problems in a different manner/land, etc
I lived in China many years, speak fluent Chinese, amazing country, but I felt I'd never really be fully accepted. I really wanted to live in China forever but a lot of Chinese values my Americanness just wouldnt accept 😅. Chinese people were some of the most amazing people I met... also a lot of them only viewed me as a white monkey, and after c0v1d I was banned from entering many places, and everyone became distristful of me because I was American so I left. TLDR you cant run from your culture and your roots!
Language is the essence of culture. If you don't speak an Asian language at all, you're really a Westerner inside. If your English is much better than your Chinese like LKY, you lose a bit of your Chinese identity. The language we think in affects how we think, how we solve problems. If English is your first language, you cannot say you use it just as a tool because it's going to affect you deeply. LKY's mother tongue should be Malay/English, but the Singapore he grew up in was still predominantly Chinese-speaking and so he was able to think like an Asian because he had to interact with Chinese-speakers all the time. But there are very few genuine Chinese speakers (people who speak Chinese including dialects as a first language) in Singapore today. Singapore today is one of the most Westernized country in Asia. Culturally, it's 50% Asian and 50% Anglo - which isn't a bad thing if they take the best of East and West.
Western culture is more than 2000 years old and many of its core values come from the Greeks and Romans... What are you on about? Sounds like whatever education you got failed you.

Besides, he changed that tiny little island into the most successful business bowl of Asia. Moreover, he is very good at straight talk so much like Iacocca of Chrysler in the United States. The key about this is actually living in the country that shares the same values as you do. Immigration means you're adopting the values and culture of majority society.
In multiracial multicultural countries like Singapore , each ethnic groups keep each of their cultural roots intact and dont have to adapt to each others. Diversity is the whole point of multiculturalism, or else dont claim to be multicultural country if people have to convert to Anglo values.

Beautiful, Lee really understood the struggles of being a minority and what happens to those who lose their own culture ❤
Also, those who have not lived the life of a minority have no right criticizing Lee's words.
Most whites in North America and Australia, for example, have lost their culture and identity as well.

Since that day, I’ve committed to improving my Mandarin!
Funny and ironic that a Taiwanese said to you that when many Taiwanese youth under decades of Taiwan's DPP anti-Chinese and pro-separatist brainwashing, are now completely denied their Chinese roots and hate on everything related to Chinese.

China foreign Minister Wang Yi said before--> It doesn't matter how much you dye your hair blonde, how sharp you make your nose, you'll never become Europeans or Americans. You'll never become Westerners.

While I don't support China I must agree with it.
Mr Lee Kuan Yew meant that you be yourself. He does not mean that you cannot be friends with the western world.
Yeah because friends don't be boot lickers. But sadly most Asians literally worship white people and white culture
No-one cares Yet almost all Australians will tell you it's not a racist country 😂
Since coming back home to Amsterdam, I am so haooy to be where I belong, at home, not treated as a foreigner. And people can spell my "funny" name
So it's not just the racism in Australia (though I'm sure it doesn't.help.)
I'm a Westener, Western values etc, but NOT English values !!
You dun care when young, just want to fit in.

@@edwardroh89 what killing western society is individualism. Asian societies honor & respect the elderly and tradition . Unfortunately in the west when you are old you are no use and ignored. In Asia elderly people are respected and honored . I love Asian culture because they have not lost this respect for the family and elderly . Keep your nice Asian traditions
China went through their own phase where the leadership was dominated by the military machine. The scholars have always been against soldiers. The writers at odd's against the warriors. This is not a battle between West and East, that frame work is what the military machine wants you to see it as. This is a battle of humanity's academic's vs humanity's assassins. Will the next generation choose to learn or to kill each other over ego.
It's easy to get ahead when you have a slave workforce
They can’t even figure out what their gender is. All too much confusion. Western people, white people, are jealous. They know that in a fair world, we are the superior race.
As a person who almost lost their roots, I'm proud that I decide to go back to my roots further
Very very beautifully expressed. Yes. Apply this to India, Japan, South Korea and Philippines.
Agreed. The amount of white cream sells in India, the crazy plastic surgery in Korea, the Japanese obsession with English, adopting Japanese version of English that the older generation don’t even understand modern Japanese and the Philippines obsession with English, white creams and marrying out …….these are all identity crisis
The Philippines is the worst of the lot.
But White Males are taking over your region and the agenda is that the only good-looking kids are the "mixed Kids".. So wake up people
I think its because in Asia, Filipinos are looked down upon on (only by East Asians). In the West, we are often associated as a model minority. Even far right wing westerners will say insane racist stuffs like “i PrEfEr fIlIpINos oVeR iNdIaNs bEcAuSe tHey DOnT smEll” or any stuffs that states they prefer us over any other minorities that are often associated with terrible things lol
Absolutely agree. Your Asian roots and capabilities are blessing! If you're able to realize it truly at one point, you're above!

Your situation was exactly what LKY warned Singaporeans about. You may speak English like them but you will never be "English".
I know my cultural heritage and conciously reject the parts that don't make pragmatic sense to me. (As I reject the parts of Western culture that don't make sense to me)
But by knowing the language and culture and identifying primarily as my ethnic group, no one can take it away from me.

The Englishman is reading Shakespeare in old style English completely absolved and you're reading it going like "what the hell is this" 😂
The language you speak reflects how you think and vice versa

The Singaporean Chinese diaspora of the older generation do retain traditional Chinese values but it is not visible in the younger generations, though they were required to learn Chinese as a second language
The problem is the lack of what is known as 家教 (teaching by the parents) who used to shoulder this responsibility in the past, and this responsibility is normally pass down the generations.
This trend had now stopped as the busy working parents (both working in most cases) had depend on the modern schools to do this duty.
They had not.

Examples of the traditional Chinese values will be respect for elders, parents and teachers, frugality, loyalty to family and nation, study and work hard, save to spend & not borrow to do so, repay debts promptly, and other virtuous values.
Perhaps you can get hold of the book
三 字 经
(Three Character Classic) for an interesting read.
Some of these writing (with their English translation) are extracted here for a taste:
人 之 初 , 性 本 善 。
(Men at their birth are naturally good).
性 相 近 , 习 相 远 。
(Their natures are much the same; their habits become widely different).
苟 不 教 , 性 乃 迁 。
(If foolishly there is no teaching, the nature will deteriorate).
教 之 道 , 贵 以 专 。
(The right way in teaching, is to attach the utmost importance to thoroughness).
etc.....
However do not despair, as I find some of the young Chinese Singaporean still carry such values.

So true Stay true to your culture Have integrity
Thank you Lee Kuan Yew for what you've done for Singapore.
Honest, smart and see things as they are. He is so on point when speaking about the difference in values between the Chinese and the West.
As much as I wish he was wrong. After 30 some years on this earth, and 20 some years in a western nation, I cannot honestly disprove anything that he said. Everything he said, I have seen and experienced.
Too bad some of us are heavily Westernized, the Philippines included, this the reason why we still have a national identity crisis...
Filipina women should stop marrying westerners
Worst, some are colonially brainwashed people that thinks that they r white n look at D US as their savior. But history shows that they really don't care n even short changed them. Sadly most of those colonial subjects can't think critically, n does not want to learn d real history, NOT D history written by d oppressor.
The Philippines is the most westernised. They have Stockholm syndrome
I grew up in a whitewashed family. I lived in the UK for 10 years, only to realise the dream and promise of being one of them was a mistake.
Race blindness is a pipe dream, and losing our heritage is nothing to be celebrated, but rather lamented.
Most of the immigrants are ignorance of complex racial history and issues in the West. Else they wouldnt move in the 1st place.
I mean that was predictable I'm mixed and I can still perceive this. I truly think theres too much hypocrisy in the way society pretends to be and how it actually is.
This is deep and great...
The most important thing that should be on everyone mind currently should be to invest in different sources of income that doesn't depend on the government. Especially with the current economic crisis
Companies need money to grow, and they let people buy shares to help fund that growth, giving investors a chance to earn profits.
Money invested is far better than money saved, when you invest it gives you the opportunity to increase your financial worth
What's amazing is how much bigger and more complex it's gotten. Now, companies can raise billions by going public, and instead of just funding ships, we're talking about funding everything from tech innovations to renewable energy
But for most people, myself included, the stock market can feel a bit overwhelming. There's so much information out there, and it's hard to know where to start
The market's so big now, with thousands of companies trading, and then there are all the different types of stocks-growth, value, blue-chip, and let's not even get into all the market indexes like the S&P 500 and Bitcoin It's a lot to wrap your head around
As a Chinese who moved to US at 13 of age and have had many ABC (American born Chinese) friends. I feel this guy gets the problem of ABC completely right. Losing your roots means you're neither accepted by the Chinese or the Americans, and your confidence will fall through the floor

Brilliant. Thanks for uploading this. 一位眼光很獨到的李先生。
Estranging the youth is an imperialist strategy to morph entire regions, in order to subject them to the USA/collective West, via the people who live there. Search for "cultural capture."
cheers
they will one day realised that if they ever live in western world, they will always be discrimated against
LKY absolutely right on this, as an Asian who live in Australia I absolutely understand the matter very clearly, I experience it too.
Don't assume that this is only a Chinese issue. The other Asians, Europeans, Africans, etc. may also have the same issues. The Americans have to understand that.
If you live in America you should be an American and assimilate. If you don't want to, then go live somewhere else.

24 year old American Hmong here…it is to my great regret that I cannot have a conversational talk in my mother tongue with those of my folk. Lee is right though, these are all ideas and concepts that be true. The English language is a fickle one…dumbed down to the bones but convenient for us. I am still young but Lee and Singapore’s past give me hope and wisdom…but my folk are far too widespread across the world now…thanks to the C.I.A.

the english language isnt a dumb down one but living here in the US, society really dont want you to keep your mother tongue nor heritage. western society does not truly welcome foreign cultures, and languages because it sees it as a threat. the west knows that if you can only speak english, you lose the ability to understand media from other parts of the world, you are less susceptible to outside influence and less likely to relocate. you are stuck, dependent, and brainwashed by western media. that is the goal of western society.
@ Rayjack-m9o so are you free and likely will be forced to leave OUR country as Blacks and Asians were born n America FIRST. And the Asians will be protected by us Blacks, try us.
New culture evolves when conditions change. We should not be limited to our ancestors' cultures but to expand and improve for the better.
Wow but American and German soldiers killing each other during WW2.
I share this great statement's views on never adopting without question everything from the West. I spent even longer years in the West than Lee.
What he is saying about east asians is also very relevant to the south asians, and west asians as well.
No it isn't
I appreciate this man for keeping his heritage close to his heart.
As a Black Man, I see so many ethnic groups with powerful histories suddenly just no longer care. No solid identity, just a mass of whatever may be "popular" at the time.
Now, I understand that people can be friends or respect or even marry people of other groups, but it should never be placed on a pedestal to the point where suddenly, it's what's preferred over their own people.
If there is a divisive sense between people's, then they shouldn't always just toss everything to the wayside and run off to others to fix their problems in a different manner/land, etc
Ghana must research on the man Lee Kuan Yew and turn his ideals in to our own.Definitely.
The human character model after the great sages of Confucius , Lao Zi, will steer your life in the right direction of prosperity and harmony 🙏.
Our asian ideology of thinking is the best of human beings
There are so many of those in Hong Kong!
The first language we learn to speak fluently will dictate how we think and process information.
Never taint your long-lasting culture with one that won't survive 1000 years in history books.
Western culture is more than 2000 years old and many of its core values come from the Greeks and Romans... What are you on about? Sounds like whatever education you got failed you.
Good compilation. Timeless. Resonate.
This is true and relevant for all ethnic groups.

Lee is like every one, not perfect. But he really is a professional and knows how to rule the asians in Asia. Besides, he changed that tiny little island into the most successful business bowl of Asia. Moreover, he is very good at straight talk so much like Iacocca of Chrysler in the United States. The poor countries in this world need a man like Lee Kuan yew to better their future in terms of economy and education. We still have a lot to learn from Lee Kuan yew.
