  • Remaking the historic Old Timer Sharpfinger! This knife design has stood the test of time! I made this knife for my father who appreciates a classic design like this one. I took the opportunity to play around with a mustard patina on this knife.

    Anyone own a Schrade Old Timer Sharpfinger?!

      I do, bought it in the 70's. Cleaned a lot of squirrels with it, never used it on a deer. Still have it somewhere. Quick little knife.

      1st knife that my dad bought me back in the ‘70 when I was 13. I past it down to my son when he turned 13. He said that he will give to his son when he turns 13. Great little skinning knife.

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      TheGhostBeast hey Ghost! That piece of square tubing in the forge is generally referred to as a “muffle pipe”. I’ve found it really helps you evenly heat the blade during the heat treat and minimizes hot spots!

    • @RedBeardOps

      Sweet! Glad to hear that. I think that finish is pretty cool. I've found that "less is more" with the mustard application.

  • @e.t.preppin7084
    @e.t.preppin7084 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just bit the bullet and ordered an oven. I enjoy using my gas forge but I’m limited to outdoor heat treating. My blades never flame in vegetable oil but I see yours do. Im definitely up to temperature ( non magnetic). 🤔

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      chip Lape man! I’m jealous! What oven did you go with? Mine don’t always flame up either. I don’t think that’s the best indication of success. I normally try and get 20-50 degrees over non-magnetic, but with my set up it’s not an exact science.

    • @e.t.preppin7084
      @e.t.preppin7084 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even heat kf 18. Can’t wait to get it. Says 5 weeks 😬. So I’ll still be using the forge for now. I really admire your attention to detail 👍👍👍. Next I think I’ll get a big wheel. What size do you use. Then I really need the DD tool rest!!!

      @e.t.preppin7084 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Love the mustard treatment. Is that it just leave it on 2 1/1 hours and wash off. Again what did you spray on your knife at the end.

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@e.t.preppin7084 Yes sir, that's exactly what I did. Make sure your mustard has vinegar in it. I used Ballistol multi purpose lubricant to spray the knife down with.

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@e.t.preppin7084 Man that's awesome! I'm supper jealous now! Sounds like a sweet oven. I haven't done any hollow grinding yet. The wheel I have is only 4''. I'm pretty sure 10-12'' is the standard for hollow grinding general knives.

    What finish has lasted the longest on your knives? And was that 1075?

    • @RedBeardOps
      @RedBeardOps  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Man these old timers are pointy aren't they?!? The steel used in this build was 1084. Most of my knives have a stone washed finish and I feel like this is a good working finish on a knife. Nothing wrong with a good old hand sanded satin finish either, but you will see some scratches more easily I think.... not to mention they take longer to get right when building.

    • @chrisroosendaal4169
      @chrisroosendaal4169 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1
