P.S. Petacchi is celebrating Cav's victory, realizes, he can become 2nd easily and starts pedalling again, I always loved that scene.
Martin-Kwiatkovsky-Trentin-Pettachi-Renshaw-Cavendish... The other teams may just as well give up.
But remember that teams had one more rider at this time, so trains could be longer.
Also Trentin, Kwiato and Martin could also bring stages on their own when not working for Cav so it's not exactly everything on Cavendish. (And btw Alaphilppe throw in a turn in QS train at the Tour too).

Imagine if Quickstep took a train of Declerq, Cavagna, Asgreen, Lampaert, Sénéchal, Ballerini, Mørkøv and Cavendish/Jakobsen to the Tour de France this year. If they led out the sprint in that order, then that leadout train would be unstoppable. Stage wins would just be a guarantee for the sprinter at that point.
And if the sprinter crashes out or can’t make it through the mountains in time? It’s an unbeatable idea in theory but all eggs in one basket has its risks.

@@ezrakoppel555 even if they do Morkov showed last year that he could definitely win a sprint stage as the final sprinter. Imagine Askgreen leading out for him

@@ricecrusher8036 he only showed that on one stage and when they thought he was the leadout man with Quickstep boggling that sprint because they thought Cav lost Morkov’s wheel.
I think this is my favourite commentary of yours yet 😁 “nope… nope… and the last man says “‘sacré bleu" and he’s not happy with that…” - I was cackling and rewound it about 12 times (I think I just showed my age by saying “rewound” 😅). As a fellow Aussie now living in Europe, it’s also always nice to hear the accent too 🇦🇺 So glad you’re doing what you’re doing, keep it up!

Mate, I watch every video you post and listen to every podcast. There’s a rumor that Andorra will implement a restraining order on me because I spend too much of my life on Lanterne Rouge Media Pty Ltd and/or Lanterne Rouge Media, SL (hereafter, “LRBAMF”) content. Alas, even I do not remember you uploading this stage in the past. Keep uploading old stages with new commentary, it’s awesome and you’re killing it.
On the other hand, I did recall Benji with the shoutout to Simon Yates’ stage 2 ITT potential from the Giro preview podcast. Not enough attention has been paid to that. Chapeau.
That lead out train was on fire, it is worth teams building a team round a sprinter if you decide that's what you are focused on but you are right you have to win stages. With people like Cav is works and you get great publicity and sponsorship. It's bold and risky move especially if your sprinter crashes. Personally I love it, different teams going for different objectives. A stage win at one of the big 3 tours is worth a lot, it means you get the coverage.
If you could make a review of Tony Martin’s nail bitting +170km solo breakaway at La Vuelta 2013 in which the peloton was about to catch him with 10km to go and struggled all the way to the final 500m only to catch him in the last 20-30 meters because of Cancellara? That was easily the most impressive performance I have ever seen, I think it was Morkov who won that stage.
This level of thought and analysis is the best cycling content on TH-cam.

I never knew i needed a video about a 8 year ols tirreno sprint stage, but here we go
I think there are two related reasons for the trains to be smaller now, because it worked so well it became a victim of its own success. That created:
1- A much bigger market for lead out riders, who thus became more expensive.
2- A much bigger sprinting field, making maneuvering a lot more difficult with so many riders involved. When there are 6 trains competing, it's a mess. That disrupts the large trains, while some guys (like Sagan) built their own careers without much of a leadout train at all, preferring to be deposited to the front and then browsing the wheels to follow independently in a quite flexible way. Cavendish himself does that quite efficiently, and QuickStep sometimes had Kittel sprinting basically on his own during his glory days since he was so much stronger than the opposition.
Meanwhile, a good puncheur like Alaphilippe is gold for QuickStep. Kwiatkowski could also be that (or could in the past), before his move to Sky/INEOS. The reduction in sprint stages in Grand Tours also reduced the incentive to build large trains, as there are more stages for puncheurs, small groups and less numerous bunch sprints following "boring" flat stages. In a way, the TdF is contradictory in its fight against Sagan's dominance in the points competition while it was trying to reduce the flat stages to a maximum, reducing the chances of the pure sprinters to beat him along the way.
Big fan of the archive videos. Would love to see an analysis of Standard's win against the triple Wolfpack in Omloop. What a race that was.

It often annoys me when people ascribe Cavendish's victories to just a great lead out train. I mean 160 times! But with that line up, ok you got me with that one. That was just stoopid ridiculous.

This is fantastic. Please do more video analyses of older stages, especially with Cavendish because he always has these dramatic finishes. Seriously that team - Cavendish, Renshaw, Martin, etc. - was the best in sprints. I miss Renshaw. I wish he were still in tip top shape to be Cav's leadout man.

What a fun clip, I'd never seen that. Greipel's move was very nearly inspired but stayed just on the side of suicidally reckless :)
I mean, it is an absolutely amazing sprint train, and Cav might have won no matter what. But you did notice the crash in the final corner that ruined the sprint for EVERYONE ELSE except these 5 and the poor guy from Lampre? Seems to be a lot of praise for a sprint that was more or less handed to them by random circumstance and of course good positioning for the final corner avoiding the carnage.
Just goes to show that the sprint train is not only to give you an exceptional leadout, but it also keeps you out of trouble.
You did notice that LR mentioned that and that the turn is imperative to be at the front.

I find it fascinating how racing and squad build has developed, or just changed, over the years. And not very many years. It will be interesting to see how sprinters perform without the support.
And I am not saying zero support, I'm saying that sprinters will get 2-3 instead of the 4-5.

I think the reduction from 9 to 8 riders really changed the makeup of the leadout train.
