Roglic did as well as he can and had performed at par with all other GC hopefuls, which is exactly what he is supposed to do on a last day of stage race with a minute's lead. And let's not forget that Simon Yates delivered a superlative ride where he was able put atleast a minute and half on everyone except roglic and wva. It's inconceivable that all of 56 of them had a bad day. So Simon Yates was on a specially good day. Even without help from team mates, I think roglic could've just held on to a yellow jersey today, like contador in 2015 Giro.
If it were not for WVA Roglic would have lost a minute easily as he was paced up the climb, on the decent and the run in. Yates was not on a super ride, just a good one, otherwise WVA would not have closed gap.
It is so great that the top guys now deem Paris Nice and Tirenno-Adriatico of enough value to race and win them. Ever since Indurain won the TdF, top stage racers mostly did not race hard except for the Grand Tours.
Rogla's one fault is that when he bonks, he bonks hard and bleeds time. I think Kuss or Van Aert can save him once like today, but it's not much of a gameplan in the face of Pogacar. He's going to have to be more aggressive or clever in the Tour if he wants to win. A 60k raid with thermonuclear numbers like last year on Covadonga will likely be required. Here's hoping.
i'm afraid i agree with this. need genuine imagination and superlative teamwork from jumbo to overcome the pogeyman. but still doable! esp with wva & vingegaard on board

This is one of those instances when the strongest rider did not win. Simon Yates was heads and shoulders above Roglic, but with WvA pulling him, he hung on to the GC. Thank you Wout! If Jayco had better helpers, Simon could have significantly distanced Roglic. But Jumbo-Visma have a Wout van Aert
Absolutely clear that Roglic hit a wall in the second half of the last climb and WVA saved his yellow jersey. Impossible to extrapolate this to predict future form of Rog since so many riders dropped out the race due to illness every day and perhaps Rog himself was sickening. Great stage win for Yates and BEX
Roglič said he was tired from a previous day and didn't feel well from the start due to cold conditions. He wore too many layers and overcooked. When he took some layers off the damage was done.
awesome reporting . ( for English language learners and artists , just sayin that Yates kit is not "baby" blue. Baby blue is much lighter and of a pastel hue )
Amazing performance by van Aert. Roglic loses yellow without him. Yates attacking at the steepest point on the last climb(14%) was brilliant. Great stage.
A few years back, with team Sky tactically keeping every GC rider in check with every single rider with a chance falling in the tour year and year again made me stop watching cycling for a while, im sure it was impressive, but that black blue striped 5 man peleton lead in every race for 7 years was beyond boring in my own opinion. Maybe its because im Dutch and ive followed Jumbo Visma from their start that i am biased, but the epic rivalry against UAE and Jumbo, with all these other talented riders doing some beautiful attacks really put me back in the sport. Even the dominant matches with Jumbo Visma are a sight to see, the first day of Paris Nice was incredible. I'm gonna enjoy this and next year for sure!
Wout took Roglic on his back and gave JumboVisma the parice nice win. Like a real domestique. Great teamwork. Best all rounder next to a couple of other riders right now. Will be nice to see him battle it out with Pogacar in De Ronde Van Vlaanderen
In a way, the Jumbo response to Yate's thermo nuclear attack was probably the best option. If they had responded with a thermo nuclear chase, Yates or somebody else would have countered with another attack. By letting Yates go and responding with a steady pace, they get to climb steady to the top and just keep Yates in check. Yates doesn't get to rest up because he keeps thinking he can stretch his lead and Primoz and Wout get to work together to keep control. The only risk is that Yates has more in his legs than you can manage, but then you're losing anyway.
Totally agreed. This is exactly the importance of having your domestique right there with you. Had Rog been isolated, he probably would have panicked and tried to close Yates' attack, only to tire himself even further. Fortunately, WvA was able to keep a cool head and bring Rog back into it. I'm reminded of how Martinez helped a frail Bernal at last years Giro, quite epic.
Super impressive from Van Aert. I always knew that Jumbo will make it. However I thought that they will catch Yates and van Aert will win the stage. Great for Yates though.
@@pauljansen1137 yeah, really tough day at the office for Roglic today. He clearly had to dig deep to hold on to van Aert's wheel. Gutsy performances all round. Superb day of bike racing.
WvA was awesome yesterday, without him roglic would have lost the stage. Vout was pacing a lot yesterday and after yates attack he was pulling roglic for 95% to the finish
This did not come as close to happening as people think. Yates himself stated post race that it was an impossible deficit to make up in one stage , unless Roglic crashes - which he didn’t. Roglic held a big lead on GC the entire time, Yates just made a heroic attack at the end but it really wasn’t that close on the GC. We forget that Wout carried Yates, Martinez, and Quintana the entire last hour of the race and they all refused to help out, so if you take Wout out of the equation Quintana and Yates would’ve had to fight it out taking turns which would’ve taken away from that last attack energy from Yates that made this race look way closer than it actually was. Wout carried everyone and people act like Roglic was the only one that would’ve been dropped had Wout not been there but he carried ALL OF THEM. Who’s to say Yates would’ve had that last attack in him had Wout not carried him up the mountain.

I don’t know how BikeExchange will use their climbing domestics in Giro but if they can properly utilize Hamilton, Kangert, Schultz, Howsen etc then Yates may put the ghosts of 2018 to rest. They need to ensure the domestics are in form as well. Yates has been mostly alone in the high mountains last two years (since Haig left)! They have the some real good young climbers as well this season.
Well he fooled me last year after winning Tour of the Alps, he looked so strong. I was all in on him for the Giro and he under-performed aside from Stage 19. So I'm skeptical that March Yates is a good predictor of what May Yates will do.
Paris-Nice is a nightmare on the final stage for the leaders because of the atrocious kit they have to wear. Basically a plastic grocery bag in the wind smh
IMO. some tunnel vision tactics from Ineos. They could have changed tactics for the final stage. Martinez was 1min behind Rog, Yates 1min50. A near impossible deficit for Yates to close. Yates could have played domestique for Martinez with Rowe and Fraille driving the Ineos train
@@kenosisibambato1558 fraille completely split the leader group on the penultimate climb. I agree Yates should have been used differently, but then Dani Martinez himself made that separation with the attack at 47km to go. At that point it was an individual fight as Adam didn’t follow that move. We were robbed of Dani and Simon trying to work over Wout/Rogla on Col D’Eze… if Dani had got in Simon’s move too, 2 vs. 2.. maybe even Wout wouldn’t have been able to save Rogla. But I agree, Adam Yates wasn’t really used by Ineos during the actual stage - their in-flight tactical decisions have sucked for ages, probably going back to Nico Portal untimely death.
Definitely looked not as fresh as Yates but it didn’t look like he was panicking either. He had WVA and a decent lead still with the descent and false flat. No sense in crashing and setting himself back when odds were still in his favor
Roglic said he was wearing too many layers in the beginning which lead to overheating. Once he started undressing the damage was done and he suffered from there on. Needless to say, he has to do a lot of work before going to TDF, Pogacar is way better atm.
Without Wout Primoz loses. Wout said they did not want to take risks on the descent. If they did and it worked Wout would have won the stage. Primoz definitely owes him one!
I wonder if Primoz just got too cold. Short sleeves, bib shorts, no gloves. While Yates has long sleeves, gloves, shoe covers, and even a little neck gaiter. Could be that Primoz was getting hot going uphill, then he undressed and on the descent he started freezing and didn’t have time to put anything back on.
Clearly Roglic has anxiety and trauma issues after his loss last year at Paris Nice and his experience at the Tour de France in 2020 when he had a panic attack on the final stage when he saw Pogicar was putting down bigger numbers then him. When you are in panic mode you cannot open your cardiovascular system freely. Pogicar could as he was exuberant and confident and desirous of the win. Roglic unfortunately got captured on his worry that he was letting down all of his teammates at jumbo Visma who had worked so hard for him for the previous three weeks. With this pressure and worry in his mind his cardiovascular abilities shut down The outcome of that race was determined by their different mindsets. In Paris Nice Roglic was unable to have his usual power because he was anxious and in the “trauma zone” worried he would fail again after Yates attacked. With his PTSD activated he could not generate his usual power. Fortunately he had a comforting strong supportive teammate who we could trust and rely on to support and guide him. All traumatized people would well with such supportive helpful guidance to be able to master challenges. C.S.Doyle M.D.
Gaining 22 seconds in 10 seconds actually isnt defying the laws of physics, this is probably an error though in this stage. I actually really wonder how they calculate the time gaps, because they need to somehow estimate how long it takes the guy behind ride up to where the guy in front is. For example, if a car driving at 20m/s drives for 10 seconds past you, while you drive at 5m/s, it would have traveled 150m ahead of you, and this 150m takes you 30s to make up, so no wrong physics there. The time gap calculator must have had a data point where Roglic's speed was not right/too slow.
Roglic/JV need to plan for a good last stage i.e fit and fresh and not get caught out again. Perhaps they did try to, so what went wrong or what couldn't they fix ? Either fuelling, injury or sickness. Roglic very fortunate to have kept in touch with Yates, without Wout he would have lost the race twice in a row . A great effort by JV, should give Wout a chance for GC in TdeF soon, as he's fresher and younger than Roglic.
What the hell happened to Nairo? He wasnt terrible but not even close to what you'd exepext from a pure climber like him in these two last stages. Did he lose the form from February or is it just better competition? Such a shame Martinez punctured, he'd have made things way more exciting.
The level is so high now. The bikes are the heaviest and slowest but the average speeds are the highest because the desire to win and dominate is stronger than ever before.
I thought he was lucky Martinez's tyre burst because he could have gone with Yates and Van Aert might not have been strong enough to keep Roglic's yellow jersey safe.
If I was Jumbo, I would support WvA fully for green (if not more) at the TdF. Roglic cannot and will not cope with Pogacar so a waste sacrificing WvA as a domestique.
This is a mightily premature comment based on one weaker moment from Roglic against a much stronger field compared to what Pogacar has faced in Tirreno.
Van Aert can easily get green and still work as a domestique for Roglic in the mountain stages where it's needed. WvA only needs Teunissen as a leadout for sprints, he gets a lot of points in TTs which other green jersey contendors won't get and he can get in a couple breaks in mountain stages where, again, other green jersey contendors have no chance of following him. The only stage where I can see trouble is the one with cobbles.

And that is why we support Roglic over Pogacar. Primoz is a mortal, he has his bad days. There is so much more suspense to even his wins. So much more romantic than robotic predictable wins by Pogacar who seems like an alien.
Also, kudos to Wout, what a guy!
Facts 💯
Unfair to compare Roglic to Pogacar. There is a 9 year age difference.
Well said!
@@umutaymakoglu4418 you just compared their ages.
Hard to blame Pogacar for being so good. Given that he is such a beast, Pogacar seems to go out of his way to make his wins as spectacular as possible. Also when he is out of shape, he still spices up stages with attacks for fun.
Excellent work mate! My favorite channel on YT!
Wout got the job done for Roglic...seeing those two work together is amazing! Great job to Yates on the stage win👍
Up the Jumbo Visma boys!

Remember Simon Yates bonking stage 16 Giro? Anyone can bonk hard. These guys are humans working on the edge, no machines w/ buttons. Throw a dart and you'll hit a pro rider who has bonked and lost time.

Roglic was not up to his usual spectacular self but still 3rd best on the stage and suffered incredibly to save the overall GC win. I agree! Lots of Cycling Media are celebrating Roglic, but he nearly lost it again if it weren’t for Wout. I think YET AGAIN we have to ask the question, what is the potential of Wout and should they release him for a GC ride?
Wow WVA! What an animal, he saved the race for Primoz.
Great video again - really enjoyed these Paris nice highlights

awesome reporting . ( for English language learners and artists , just sayin that Yates kit is not "baby" blue. Baby blue is much lighter and of a pastel hue )
Wout was instrumental in this Primož's win. Well done boys! :)
Wout mvp, really happy for Roglic

Great planning by JV to leave a fresh WvA for today, absolutely necessary. Quintana dropped - shows where he is at vs the level of the top guys IMO.
There were rumours (said by France 3 TV) that this wasnt planned. So leave place to doubt ;)
What a fine group of four going away.

Exceptional work from Omar Fraille today.... shame about Dani's puncture...
IMO. some tunnel vision tactics from Ineos.

1’44 on everyone else. Stonking ride by Yates.
Roglic said he was wearing too many layers in the beginning which lead to overheating. Once he started undressing the damage was done and he suffered from there on.
Needless to say, he has to do a lot of work before going to TDF, Pogacar is way better atm.
What a great stage, so much better than tirreno!

Wout drops Quintana.....WTAF?
Wout is indestructible.
So, for bigger time gaps, like minutes, they would somehow have to estimate the chasing group's speed. Which can be difficult!
Why is WVA's fork red?

Roglic/JV need to plan for a good last stage i.e fit and fresh and not get caught out again. Perhaps they did try to, so what went wrong or what couldn't they fix ? Either fuelling, injury or sickness.

Such a shame Martinez punctured, he'd have made things way more exciting.
The level is so high now. The bikes are the heaviest and slowest but the average speeds are the highest because the desire to win and dominate is stronger than ever before.
One could say record breaking levels of 'desire'
"Aero" anything and disc brakes made all the difference.
I thought he was lucky Martinez's tyre burst because he could have gone with Yates and Van Aert might not have been strong enough to keep Roglic's yellow jersey safe.
Roglič was in control all the time.
Roglic is in a class of his own when it comes to GC guys. But that's only because Pogacar is in a class of his own as well, above Roglic.
TJV : Oh Sh**t
