As a Godzilla fan from Germany, I would like to say, that I've always been more than confused with those "Frankenstein's King Kong vs Dracula's Godzilla from Devil's Hell"-kinda titles.
When I was a kid, I tried to find the right order to watch the movies but I totally failed.

The reason why a lot of Kaiju films were given "Frankenstein" in their German title was because Frankenstein Conquers the World was very successful during its release in Germany; a lot of studios wanted to capitalize on that by somehow incorporating the Frankenstein character into the future films.

Often they also altered the dialogue to fit the Frankenstein theme. This was a time when distributors thought they could tamper with a film to their own liking.
even today some movies get new english titles in Germany, if the movie studio thinks that the the english words of the original one are not familiar enough for the german audience. they might not be so misleading as those Frankenstein examples but it's still confusing when you're learning that it's not the original title.
They do it in Brasil also, it really sucks. "Charlie's angels" became "The Panthers" for some reason. Also, "The Godfather" became "The powerful boss". Fucking insane.
It doesn't really have much to do with "Frankenstein Conquers the World." What it does have to do with is the Germans consider Frankenstein "the father of monsters." Couple that with the fact Godzilla was not especially popular in Germany and you got them retitling the movies to cater to their audience.
The Germans also altered plot details in the dubbing to justify the Frankenstein name. In "Destroy All Monsters", the Kilaaks are supposedly working for Frankenstein. In "Godzilla vs. Hedorah", Hedorah was created by mysterious chemicals Dr. Frankenstein poured down a drain.

I am german and as a kid i was always confused by the title "King Kong vs Godzilla" and in the end it was Godlzilla vs Mechagodzilla.I always thought that i had the wrong Videotape case

Guter Einwurf. Ich hab mir da als Kind nichts weiter bei gedacht. Verwirrend wurde es erst, als dann auch noch "Die Rückkehr des King Kong" auf meinem Radar auftauchte. Der Film ist in den Achtzigern glaub ich gar nicht auf VHS erschienen und lief erst in den Neunzigern wieder im TV. Meine ersten Godzilla-Filme hatte ich übrigens - kopiert aus der Videothek - auf Beta Max. Bewahre die Kassetten noch heute auf. :D

Mechani-Kong and Mechagodzilla actually teamed up against Godzilla once in a manga from the 1990's.
There was supposed to be a MechaniKong Vs. Godzilla by Toho in the Heisei series, but they couldn't use any characters that looked like Kong, even if it was their own creation.
Or Kong and Gojira/Godzilla vs mechagodzilla and mechanikong
Throw in Mecha King Ghidorah for good measure.

The situation with a lot of Godzilla movies re-named to feature "Frankenstein" really reminds me of "Django" situation - it was also widely popular in Germany, so A LOT of spaghetti westerns were released and even slightly re-dubbed to feature Django.

I've had a script in the works for years about Godzilla, King Kong and Gamera fighting a resurrected Destroyah using rubber suits and sets. Also about a family stuck in the middle of the carnage. One day if I get the rights from Toho and somewhat of a financial backing I hope to make it :)

Godzilla - Frankenstein's Dragon from the Jungle (Gamera vs. Barugon...yes, Barugon is renamed to Godzilla in the German dub. Whereas Gamera becomes Barugon. It's pure insanity.)
Guila - Frankenstein's Devil Egg (The X from Outer Space)
U-2000 - Dive of Terror (Atragon)
U-4000 - Panic under the Ocean (Latitude Zero)
Command from the Dark (Godzilla vs. Monster X. The title was derived from a German sci-fi novel by author Hans Dominik.The German opening credits even suggest that the film was based on the novel, which is completely untrue.)
Ufos Destroy the Earth (Gorath....which is hilarious, because there is not a single UFO in this one. It's about a rogue planet on a collision course with Earth and humanity's efforts to avoid annihilation. On top of that, the German theatrical cut even completely removed Magma, the movie's kaiju from the film. Thankfully, there is an uncut DVD.)
And the best thing about the German version of Terror of Mechagodzilla? The actual dub script doesn't even use the names Konga and King Kong for the Titanosaur and Mechagodzila, respectively. They're called by their original names....which is sort of problematic, since Mechagodzilla had been called "King Kong" in the earlier movie. @_@

Aliens = Name of the planet: Death
Alien 3 = Last solution : Death
Alien 4 = The Death ressurrects (the closest to the original :D)

The guy who played as Dr. Who in "King Kong Escapes" was like an iconic "household name" actor to most Tokusatsu fans due to his frequent involvement in a lot of sci-fi in Japan up until his death in 2003. You may see him both in most of the Godzilla trilogies, Kamen Rider (as the titular villain Dr. Shinigami), and some other less mainstream superhero TV series.
Hey James, I love when you review the classic monster movies especially anything related to King Kong or Godzilla. I think you bring a unique prospective to your reviews that are both informative and funny. So thanks for the entertaining video's and Keep up the awesome work.
Actually, Movie title translations are still kind of a problem here in Germany. For example "Thor: The Dark World" was called "Thor: The Dark Kingdom" without any reason. We kind of have a habit of keeping the title in english but still changing it.
I especially love German movie subtitles. Alien becomes "Alien- Das unheimliche Wesen von einer fremden Welt" meaning "Alien - The terrifying being from a foreign world".
Or Halloween, now called "Halloween- Die Nacht des Grauens", the night of terror. It just sounds so clicheed.

Lukethefox The subtitles always were the same, just translated. But up until Episode I, Star Wars was called "Krieg der Sterne" over here, which literally translates to "War of the Stars". I guess "Sternenkriege" seems really weird to even consider.

I actually live near Castle Frankenstein (approximately an hour away from it) and each Halloween they have the most fucking insane Halloween celebration with costumed actors terrorizing crowds and what not. James would love it.
And yes Germany's movie translations in the 50's to 70's were outrageous and hilarious. Spaghetti Westerns and Horror movies had incredible stupid titles, as did the bud spencer and terrence hill movies that were insanely popular in Germany. Germany was a funny place when it comes to movies, hardcore censoring, stupid titles, weird release schedules, the weirdest movies became german cult favorites.
That's a new statement for filmmakers that have the guts to say, "i eat my special effects" 😎

Well in Italy we named same films in shit. Here some Exsample:
Godzilla vs Mothra(1964) becames"Watang in the fabulous Monster's Reign";
Terror of Mechagodzilla becomes "Destroy Kong, the Earth is in Danger"
And this are only TWO films of the Showa era.

no so much. Besides the title sometimes we fuck up even the monsters name. Kumonga becomes the Smegor and Kamarucas becomes Gimantis(Giant mantis). Oh i even forgot to say that here we have dubbed almost all the films untill Godzilla vs Mothra(1992) and even Godzilla's revenge isn't dubbed.

Back in the day, they only really called them Frankenstein because they wanted Money and Frankenstein is a popular name in all of Media and Culture
Next, some Movie titles were actually changed that you didn't mention
- Mothra vs. Godzilla is known here as "Frankenstein against the prehistoric Larva"
- Ghidorah, the three headed Monster is known as "Frankensteins battle against Ghidorah"
- Invasion of Astro Monster is known as "Order of the Dark"
And I would like to say that in Godzilla vs. Megalon, Jet Jaguar is called King Kong, yet him actually being King Kong is just a myth
Also, some Heisei Movies were renamed as well:
- Godzilla vs. Biollante is known as "Godzilla, the prehistoric giant"
- Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah is known as "Godzilla, duel of the Megasaurs'"
- Godzilla vs. Mothra is known as "Godzilla, battle of the Dinosaur Mutants"

In spain they renamed Godzilla vs Megalon to "Gorgo y Superman se citan en Tokyo" which roughly translates to Gorgo and Superman meet up in Tokyo. Apparently the Spanish dub refers to Jet Jaguar as Superman.

Haven't watched in order, this is the fourth video in your Kongathon series I have watched. I have enjoyed them all but in this review when you bring up not only the Frankenstein info but the Mary Shelley history... very fun! Nice touch! The original King Kong is my favorite film and was addicted to anything Kong since. Great reviews and info on all the Kong films. You do great research! With these two films. King Kong Escapes is my favorite. The story being as hokey but not played for laughs (as in KKvG) is the cherry on top. Kong looks better. The miniature buildings and landscapes are far better. None the less, they are all fun films. Thank for the reviews.

I am from Germany and it is awesome to hear so much about our german naming of the titles. I remember that as a kid I was confused by some of the old titles. I saw that Cinnemassacre appears to have some german followers. Does anybody now if they fixed the naming issues for the german DVDs/Blu Rays or do they still use the old titles?

Renaming Japanese monster movies is still a thing here in Germany. Until 2012 we never saw a release of the Daimajin trilogy and for old time's sake they renamed them.
