I saw this at the theaters in 1968. I had no idea of the ending and it sent chills down my back. I also hadn't realized the double meaning there was. Having Roddy as one of the main characters was icing on the cake.
@Charles 22 How COOL....I always wondered what audiences in the theatre thought about that ending! I saw it on television and it was in the back of my mind WHY do apes on another planet speak English, why are there horses, etc.
I went into the movie knowing the ending, but that didn't lessen the impact when Dr. Zaius revealed all that he knew, and his true motives came to light. I couldn't find any reason to think of him as a villain and it floored me. Saw it yesterday and I'm still in awe
I saw it on TV with my dad in the 90s. It don't remember much but I do remember feeling a lot of dread and sadness. Taylor survived that long just to witness humanity's sad remains. The symbol of peace, the statue, was the perfect item to place there.
i wish i was you. the moment i knew what was the ending of planet of the apes, it was when i saw the one made in 2001, wich is such a bad movie compared to the original. But even with that, i still was mindblown when i saw the original's ending, even if i knew it, it was perfectly made.
I hate that the ending is the most parodied thing in existence. I would have loved to watch the movie completely blind when I was young but I watched it when I was much older.
I'm ironic example of spoiling stuff. I watched this movie when I was 3 years old so I did not get anything about plot... except the ending because I saw Statue on pictures :D
I watched it on AMC in 2010ish when I was a 20 and it blew my mind! It really is tragic that most don't get to truly experience the greatest movie ending of all time.
some here, lucky my son watched it and didn't know. Its kind of like Empire, who doesn't know who Vader is by name. Its hard not to find out long before you see the movie.
I'm surprised you missed the main theme of this film. Taylor left earth because he hated humanity. He even says early in the film as the reason he left mankind & the earth behind: "..there has to be something out there better than man. Has to be." This man, who was so full of hate for humanity, has now ended up being humanity's lone defender. That is the brilliance of Rod Serling. How could you have missed this??
you missed something when he said "there has to be something out there better than man". there wasn't because apes were acting exactly like humans doing the exact horrible things on other species like humans do.
That VHS came out in 1998 for the 30th anniversary...so I guess they just assumed by then everyone knew the ending. All the earlier VHS and laserdisc releases didn't spoil anything.
Yeah it's true...I guess you can say that even if you hadn't seen it by 1998, you had to know the ending because it had been referenced and parodied to death by then. Spaceballs parodied it in 1986.
It's ironic within the context of the dialogue being presented how today everything is spoiled, while in the past they never thought of doing something so obvious. The video he is holding, which is in itself rather old, is doing exactly what he was saying didn't happen in the past. When the outcome is contrary to the expectation, that is irony. He also is using sarcasm and satire, just in case you missed those as well.
"Oh you finally did it..." I think this scene hits me so hard now because so many times as a kid i saw it and had no idea about the twist or even what it meant. I remember being confused and like 5 years old. "Why is the statue of liberty on this weird planet in the sand"
It's still a fantastic movie today, people have a hard time watching "old" movies but the fact it's s sci-fi helps it from feeling dated and the story is done so well it's truly a must watch.
I recommend you pick up the book by Pierre Boule. The original vision of planet of the apes is insanely good. It has some flaws here and there but well worth the read with its own unique twist ending.
You have to consider this was during the late 60's. Civil Rights was the main issue and turmoil in Vietnam that the generation protested as an immoral war. This feuled the common theme of the movie. Government not listening to the tax payer and basically suppress society with a lot of cover-up and misdirection. Gene Roddenberry also wrote some Star Trek episodes based on the common problems of the day.
I remember as a child me and my whole family watched the whole series when it was shown on TV in a marathon..the whole series...neat fact, while making the film, during lunches the actors in costume naturally segregated themselves by species...humans with humans, orangutans with orangutans, gorillas with gorillas and chimps with chimps...
At the start of the movie, it already foreshadows the ending. Taylor spoke about how the people listening to him on Earth must be a new breed by then, hopefully a better one. And the one that heard what he said could be Dr. Zaius himself. Thus he wrote those scrolls.
I always thought how cool it was that Rise of the Planet of the Apes thematically mirrors the scene in original movie where Taylor regains his voice, but instead shows us Caesar gaining his.
I've always thought the opening sequence with Taylor going into hypersleep sets the tone perfectly. It subtly suggests we're entering a dreamworld with its own unique rules, which allows for any lapses in logic we might find in the movie.
I remember seeing the ending when I was 11 years old at a time when there was no internet. The ending shocked me. That was a moment I enjoyed and will never forget. It gave me chills.
It has an special effect on me too, somehow I end it up seeing it on late tv, past midnight and the ending let me so intrigued that I actually start to investigate all the rest of the origial series, it has this twisted creepy realization that makes you crave for more insight.
Didn't know that Rod Sterling originally conceived the screenplay. The way James explains it, the ending is indeed like something out of "The Twilight Zone." Very interesting way of looking at the film now. 😊
3:15 See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. That screen shot is incredible. Also, I made that comparison with the Twilight Zone episode myself. But I had no idea Rod Serling was actually involved with this movie.
I got to go see Planet of the Apes at the theater when it was in its maiden release in 1968. It was huge. my family saw all the sequels, too. It was the Star Wars of its day, that exciting. You have just given the best movie review I've ever seen, read or heard. I'm going to find Planet of the Apes and watch it again with more thoughtfulness. I love your ending!
I was lucky to have watched this movie (Born in 2001), as a teenager in the late 2010's and was shocked by the ending. I LOVED it so much. It really is/was a once in a lifetime experience, seeing that ending.
We're robbed of that wonderful surprise of something truly unexpected nowadays, I've started to avoid ANY info about a film I feel I might love, just so I can enjoy it in the way I used to before the internet. It's definitely worth it.
Before watching this video, I just watched this movie as a recommendation from my Dad as he had watched the movie when it was still new. Honestly, this movie is truly one of the best of science fiction films. I truly recommend it, Great review!🙂
I can't believe I got so far in life without having the ending spoiled. I just finished the movie and enjoyed the ending. I can't believe the showed the ending on the cover though, lol.
I was 13 when I saw this movie on a huge screen. Have never forgotten the shock of the ending. The very last thing one would expect - realizing where you were. Brilliant.
I wasn't born until 73 so I didn't get around to watching this movie until around 95 or 96 ish and I had that moment of being blown away by the ending. It was before you could get on the internet and find everything, those early days of the net were so limited that I don't even think I'd been on the net yet in 95 to 96. I absolutely love this movie and think it looks incredible for a 1968 movie. The interior of their spaceship really stood out for me in the way of how great it looked. The ape city is cool looking with all the different levels and stuff. My favorite time frame for movies to be made was the 60's through the 90s, I like the stuff today but those years were all magical for me.
I love both the original Apes films and the new reboot series. It's one of the only sci-fi franchises I can think of that's so bleak but fun at the same time. So pumped for War for the Planet of the Apes. If it's as good as it looks, this reboot trilogy might be one up there with some of the best movie trilogies period.
I read the reboot might just keep going. Sure its milking that franchise money, but I would be hyped for more Planet of the Ape movies. Hope the reboot series can get up to a similar time to the original film with the future ape society being advanced and humans being uncivilized. although there's no spaceship with astronauts are there?
ziljin There IS a spaceship with astronauts up there! It's referenced in Rise of the Planet of the Apes particularly on a newspaper out side the house. The headline says "Icarus Lost?" or something of that nature which is the name of the ship from the original movie.
Well unless they are going to end this new movie with the world ending (completely mind you not just a virus) and a broken statue of liberty sitting on a shore line someplace (or not tie these movies directly into the original movies yet maybe) they could keep going. Don't forget tehre were like 5 or 6 (maybe more) of the original movies.
When you said "one of the best science fiction films," my face immediately scrunched up into one of those "I agree with you" contortions, coupled with affirmative head nodding.
I agree about the apes speaking English and Taylor not noticing this almost immediately. I mean imagine the odds of coming to a planet in a different solar system as Taylor thought and the inhabitants just conveniently speak English.
ivanher07 The only logical explanation for why they screwed the cover is: The people buying the VHS copy had already seen the movie & knew the plot twist. But the cover does ruin the surprise for newcomers to the series
I have to say that I am impressed with the analysis of "Planet of the Apes" by Cinemassacre. The commentary was spot on and I think that EVERY movie deserves a critical analysis from time to time. Wonderful!

I was there in ‘68...and I can tell you that people sat stunned, totally gobsmacked by that finale. It was a smart directorial/composer choice not to have any music underscoring. Just the sound of the waves rolling in was enough to convey Taylor’s sense of disgust at the human race, and his isolation. It was a classic then...it still is.
The saddest part for me is when I was a kid my parents bought me the VHS Planet of the Apes movies and I had never seen them and I had the same VHS box that spoiled the ending and wasn't just one the case it was on the entire box set. So I wasn't genuinely shocked. But I still love the movie.
Two of the BEST science fiction movies of all time we’re released in 1968 Planet of the Apes 2001 Space Odyssey Combined they received 1 total academy award
I saw this at the theaters in 1968. I had no idea of the ending and it sent chills down my back. I also hadn't realized the double meaning there was. Having Roddy as one of the main characters was icing on the cake.
This came out the same day as 2001. A space Odyssey. Which was better to you?

I recommend you pick up the book by Pierre Boule. The original vision of planet of the apes is insanely good. It has some flaws here and there but well worth the read with its own unique twist ending.
It has an English translation.

Nova, one of the most beautiful woman IMO
The saddest part for me is when I was a kid my parents bought me the VHS Planet of the Apes movies and I had never seen them and I had the same VHS box that spoiled the ending and wasn't just one the case it was on the entire box set. So I wasn't genuinely shocked. But I still love the movie.
"human work"
I welcome the new age of AVGN reviewing movies.
The character specifically.
I would love to see James talk about 2001: A Space Odyssey, anyone agrees?
Two of the BEST science fiction movies of all time we’re released in 1968
Planet of the Apes
2001 Space Odyssey
Combined they received 1 total academy award
I'm watching this naked...
Like 3,434 here - I'm so happy you're doing these films, they really are underrated and unfairly forgotten in these days.
Does James really think his audience wouldn't know the ending of Planet of the Apes?
P.S. "Spaceballs"
"Shit there goes the entire planet"
