Of all the things to get movies, I still wonder why we couldn't get a MechWarrior movie. I would have been all over this, as I love MechWarrior FMVs. With the Inner Sphere and its hundreds of years of history, you're not at any kind of shortage for a plot either. If you watch any MechWarrior FMV, such as the intros to MechCommander or MechWarrior 4, you can see how awesome a movie could have been. I could written plots for one myself, if I thought anyone of power would ever do something with it.
I hope it doesn't end up like this. Because imagine Link with a mustache, no Zelda, Octorocks with human bodies, machine guns and blaster, Ganondorf as a mob boss who turns into a dinosaur and the setting being on Earth. But, on the other hand, if executed correctly, it would be legitimately awesome.
Back in the 90s in México we always called Bowser, "Koopa".So when the movie came out, it made sense to everybody. The koopa troopers were only know as "tortugas".
The best Mario Bros. movie was a Japanime where Mario wants to rescue Toadstool from a forceful marriage to Bowser. Luigi just wants gold. What's funny is watching Bowser being in denial that Toadstool doesn't reciprocate his feelings. I don't speak Japanese, so I can't remember what it was called. The ending is typical of how Toadstool treats Mario.
I remember when i was a kid i BEGGED my dad to take me to see it in theaters, his response : "No, that movie looks stupid as shit" I'll never forget it.. lmao
He was always King Koopa on The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. When this movie came out, I knew him best as King Koopa. It wasn't until Super Mario World that I ever actually heard him commonly referred to as Bowser
Not gonna lie, I have a soft spot for this movie. If you ignore the fact that it's supposed to be an adaptation, it works much better on its own. It's not by any means great, but it's fun.
Bowser is and always has been Koopa in Japan. I don't know why they chose to use the Japanese name rather than the English name for an American movie, though.
I completely agree with this sentiment. Most modern movies can't achieve what this movie did. Perhaps not in terms of budget, but certainly in terms of actual enjoyment. It's sad that we never saw the promised sequel at the end.
I remember seeing the Super Mario Brothers add from an ALIENS movie magazine that sold figures from the Alien movies in the early 1990's. I was so excited...but then I seen it and was like wow this is not what I expected but hey Hudson couldn't of said it better himself..."Game over man!! Game over!!" God rest Paxton's soul.
I really want to address this: I downright DESPISE when they call him King Koopa. It's not as memorable a name nor as frightening as Bowser. That's a fitting name for an imposing villain. I know in Japan he's King Koopa, but I grew up hearing his name be Bowser, so that's what stuck to me.
'if Nintendo had produced the film themselves maybe it could have been done properly and in 20 years since they've never tried again it scarred them that much" and now almost 10 years later after this video, Nintendo is teaming up with Illumination for a new movie
I don't understand all the hate this movie gets. I like it, one of my childhood classics. I mean I dunno what people expect from a Mario brothers movie. I mean yeah it's nowhere near a master piece but I think they did a good job taking it somewhere new.
Just as Princess Toadstool was always Princess Peach in Japan. Bowser was always Koopa in Japan. The movie seems to have picked the names they felt most to be most fitting.
Your reviews are always fucking awesome. I love this movie but strictly from a nostalgic point of view; I saw it as a kid and was pissed that they messed up the adaptation -- but at the same time when watching it today, it still brings me back to my childhood and I think that what should count... at least for THIS one.
I love this movie. So good. Definitely not a faithful adaptation, but extremely enjoyable. Plus, it just becomes fun to look for all of the references. The characters are hilarious, and who could forget the elevator scene? I'm sure there's a nostalgia bias here. I saw the movie in theaters, around the time I was in kindergarten. So the fact that it didn't follow the games that well didn't really bug me at the time.
I could see this being entertaining to a 5 or 6 year old boy at that time. I was 14 when it came out and it was a disappointment. I think they should have went a totally different route. Re watching it for me just reminds of how bad it was. Nintendo has had a lot of success with doing things wrong.
Frankly i don't know who you would make a faithful live action adaptation in the 90's. Doing whole CGI environment just wasn't possible yet. Even then the Mario Games have mostly been light on Story. Especially back then. So i don't know where else they could have gone with it in Live Action. Even then Animation seems more like fit for Mario. I mean i think theirs a reason nobody attempted a Live Action Sonic movie. Just think of the poor bastard that would have to wear a Hedgehog outfit.
+Lone432345 There WAS a live action Sonic (fan) movie - live actors, CGI Sonic... (and I seem to be the ONLY one who's seen it that thinks it's just... OK at best.)
The plot follows "Mario Bros." far more faithfully than the more popular NES sequel that actually lent the film it's name. "Mario and Luigi are two Italian American plumber brothers from Brooklyn who notice strange creatures, Koopas, crabs and other such lifeforms are infesting the sewers of New York and messing with the plumbing, they proceed below to clean the sewers up".... Main setup of this Movie, and also the Synopsis of the early 80's Arcade Game.
I just saw this movie yesterday. I thought it was fantastic; I didn't care that much about the story, the set-pieces were fun and hilarious. My friends and I had an absolute blast watching it.
When I was 11-12 years old that movie was pretty cool for me, I really was involved in the story and even rewatched this a couple of times. Never thought it's actually a bad movie, just another cool part of my childhood.
For me the disappointment was the other way around. I saw the film back in the day (thoroughly enjoyed it then) before I had even played a Mario game. We had Sega and Amiga systems. When I finally did get a chance to play Super Mario World on a friends SNES, I was like WTF is this? I found it slow, cartoony and graphically bland compared to the gritty style of the film (and what I was playing on my Mega Drive and A500). Only in recent years have I given Mario another chance and appreciated the series more and how far off the film was. Anyway, great review and a film I really must revisit.
Jurassic Park is definitely the answer here. I saw Mario Brothers in the theater when I was younger and I really did like it. Unfortunately, I later watched Jurassic Park and almost forgot about the Mario Brothers movie until many years later as people started bringing it up online. Jurassic Park just blew everything else that year out of the water. 1993 was a great year for movies, too. Some instant classics came out that year, and Mario Brothers just didn't have a chance other than being remembered for its inability to live up to the video game. Hell, just look up "1993 movies". Groundhog Day (yes it's that new, I forgot!), Schindler's List, A Nightmare Before Christmas, The Fugitive, the underrated "Falling Down", and one of my personal favorites, Demolition Man all came out the same year as Mario Brothers.
R.I.P. Bob Hoskins.
I'll always remember him from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Phoenix Wright was good
Warcraft was pretty good (critics may not like it but us Warcraft fans loved it). I also liked the Mortal Kombat movie.
0:55 Is it just me or does John Leguizamo look like Mike Matei? Does this mean Luigi has the 10 inch python in the Mario family?
he does look like him
A ten-inch wiggler?
I was thinking the same exact thing.
A long-lost uncle, maybe?
Lelz
STILL hoping Nintendo grows the balls to do a Legend of Zelda movie... THERE is a game that can translate to the big screen.
Tim Decker that and Metroid
Triple H should play Ganondorf
Danny Devito as Link
I absolutely loved that movie when it came out. Still one of my favorite movies of my childhood.
and now, we'll have another Mario movie, but this time animated by Ilumination Studios (Despicable Me)
please make it good.
11:10 Those are Torpedo Teds, James.
"Princess frog-shit"
You got me forever guys
Back in the 90s in México we always called Bowser, "Koopa".So when the movie came out, it made sense to everybody. The koopa troopers were only know as "tortugas".
Was it because of the super show?
The best Mario Bros. movie was a Japanime where Mario wants to rescue Toadstool from a forceful marriage to Bowser. Luigi just wants gold. What's funny is watching Bowser being in denial that Toadstool doesn't reciprocate his feelings. I don't speak Japanese, so I can't remember what it was called. The ending is typical of how Toadstool treats Mario.
Heidi Fedor
SMB: The Great Mission to Save Princess Peach
Someone still calls it Japanime in this day and age?
Taz DFFD
Afganistanimation
sounds like a porno movie
@@39zack It is from french though, so "japanime" would distinguish it from french anime. Should anyone be confusing them. ;)
I remember when i was a kid i BEGGED my dad to take me to see it in theaters, his response : "No, that movie looks stupid as shit" I'll never forget it.. lmao
There actually was a sequel but only exists as a web comic
Found it. I know what I'll be doing after work.
***** simple Google search mario bros movie sequel comic
Anyone have a link?
There is? Have to look into that.
It's actually pretty good, too.
He was always King Koopa on The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. When this movie came out, I knew him best as King Koopa. It wasn't until Super Mario World that I ever actually heard him commonly referred to as Bowser
Thanks for the review, James. I always wondered what you thought about the Super Mario Bros. film. I hope you do more movie reviews in the future.
Not gonna lie, I have a soft spot for this movie. If you ignore the fact that it's supposed to be an adaptation, it works much better on its own. It's not by any means great, but it's fun.
I can appreciate it for what it is. Cyberpunk + dinosaurs with mushrooms on top.
This movie was unsettling to me as a kid, but I liked it in a weird way.
Same haha saw this with my brothers when we were kids and sometimes we still reference it. We will always remember to trust the fungus!
I agree. the film deserves more credit.
Nothing wrong with that. Nostalgia makes the shittiest of things seem like masterpieces
What does Mario use when shopping? .......A Mario Kart! WAKKA WAKKA!
I have an urge to throw a tomato at u .
What gives Mario his daily dose of vitamin D? .......Mario Sunshine!!!!!! BLOOPER BLOOP BLOOP
MMMHMM!
Funnnnnny joke!
ahhhhhh a dbz abridged fam
What kind of fruit does Mario enjoy eating? ........... Princess Peach! "BUDUM TSS"
I've had the elevator music from this movie stuck in my head for 27 years. I still hum it periodically.
kinda like Chrono Trigger with Ayla and the Reptites
And how time gets severely fucked when the dinosaurs are killed off
My thoughts exactly
R.I.P. Dennis Hopper
I'll always remember him as the hollywood villain of movies
Don’t forget Bob Hoskins!
Bowser is and always has been Koopa in Japan. I don't know why they chose to use the Japanese name rather than the English name for an American movie, though.
His name is Bowser. King Koopa is his title.
Hopefully in 2 months he’ll review the new 2023 Mario movie.
It wasn't a terrible movie. It was entertaining. Which I can't say that for most movies now days.
I completely agree with this sentiment. Most modern movies can't achieve what this movie did. Perhaps not in terms of budget, but certainly in terms of actual enjoyment. It's sad that we never saw the promised sequel at the end.
Lord Krythic I chose to buy this movie over Captain Marvel, clearly I made the correct choice.
You're right -- the film takes a lot of flak, but it's a surprisingly enjoyable sci-fi B movie.
One of the biggest let downs as a kid
Worse than Michael Bay's Transformers movies?
With all the movies that Hollywood is needlessly remaking/rebooting, this is one of those movies that actually needs that treatment.
Don't think Nintendio would let that happen
no way
Maybe animated but not live action.
+mipmipmipmipmip What about Melissa McCarthy? Every movie needs more of her, right?
+Reeve Isaacs Apparently she's the secret ingredient to make us loathe a movie.
Did Mike Matei play Luigi like wtf look at the similarity
That's what I was thinking
I thought the same...but thought it was only me.
I thought so too at 7:55 of this clip!
Now that there’s a new Mario movie coming, I wanna see James review that one.
'if Nintendo had produced the film themselves maybe it could have been done properly and in 20 years since they've never tried again it scarred them that much"
and now almost 10 years later after this video, Nintendo is teaming up with Illumination for a new movie
It seemed that Nintendo had definitely learnt from their mistakes
I don't understand all the hate this movie gets. I like it, one of my childhood classics. I mean I dunno what people expect from a Mario brothers movie. I mean yeah it's nowhere near a master piece but I think they did a good job taking it somewhere new.
I'm going to stay here until he reviews the new movie Lol
11:56 Well that aged like fine wine.
Just as Princess Toadstool was always Princess Peach in Japan. Bowser was always Koopa in Japan. The movie seems to have picked the names they felt most to be most fitting.
princess toadstool
king koopa
dr robotnik
THERE! I SAID IT!
I'll be dead in the cold, cold ground before I ever call Robotnik 'Eggman'.
Always Robotnik
@@andrewdevine3920 Amen to that! :)
His name is dr Robotnik!
he's always been bowser and in japan she's always been peach
Your reviews are always fucking awesome. I love this movie but strictly from a nostalgic point of view; I saw it as a kid and was pissed that they messed up the adaptation -- but at the same time when watching it today, it still brings me back to my childhood and I think that what should count... at least for THIS one.
You know, they should've used an animatronic and cgi like Jurassic park to make bowser/ koopa. I think that could've worked
This movie was by no means good, but I enjoy it as one of my "guilty pleasure" movies. It's just bad enough that it's kind of entertaining to watch.
sounds like someone desperately wanted to expose children to the harsh realities of the world.
True
True like reptilians
Nintendo announced a new Mario movie today on their Nintendo Direct - 9.23.2021 stream.
how is it that everybody tries to forget this movie, but nobody will stop talking about sonic 06
Game Archer AVGN review of Sonic 06 is out
yeah i watched it
I only like the music composed by my favorite composer Alan Silvestri.
I liked this movie for what it was and for me it was a good fantasy of what mario bros would be if it was actually real.
12:00 well they're about to now
I just saw this movie yesterday.
Better than 6 Resident Evil movies
sorokonojkaboris naw
Zero Cool the pussy in a wrong place can ruin the greatest things
sorokonojkaboris I totally agree with that
The Anderson movies made a billion dollars darling ;)
Also Resident Evil Vendetta was as bad as Afterlife
OH DAMN SON REKT
For me the disappointment was the other way around. I saw the film back in the day (thoroughly enjoyed it then) before I had even played a Mario game. We had Sega and Amiga systems. When I finally did get a chance to play Super Mario World on a friends SNES, I was like WTF is this? I found it slow, cartoony and graphically bland compared to the gritty style of the film (and what I was playing on my Mega Drive and A500). Only in recent years have I given Mario another chance and appreciated the series more and how far off the film was.
Anyway, great review and a film I really must revisit.
Can't wait for the new mario movie review
7:39 HEY LOOK!It’s Fishy Boopkins(right)
you right
Open the door get on the floor. Everybody walk the Dinosaur!
Cheers! Glad someone else remembers that goofy song.
thundershot69?
I didn't even know that was a song. I thought that it was just this overly done internet meme that was used to try an piss people off.
+Seth Portland (Internet Educator) lol I'm not trying to piss anyone off tho . That song just plays at the end of the movie
+Seth Portland (Internet Educator) Nope it is in fact a crappy 80s song that should do what the 80s did and die.
I don't know, I loved that movie. I don't know how it flopped that hard
Because Jurasic Park. I loved this movie too
Jurassic Park is definitely the answer here. Groundhog Day (yes it's that new, I forgot!), Schindler's List, A Nightmare Before Christmas, The Fugitive, the underrated "Falling Down", and one of my personal favorites, Demolition Man all came out the same year as Mario Brothers.
same
Shikadai Nara yeah wasn't that bad.
Thank you!
Now all they need to do is make Super Mario Bros. the game based on the movie based on the game based on the movie....
This place is probably gonna get flooded when the 2023 mario movie comes out
