cnet.co/1dbr7C9 The new 2014 Ford Fiesta fits in the category of small, efficient, high-tech cars. But does it have the guts to make it worth the $26,000 price tag?
Bought a fully equipped Fiesta ST for a little over 24k in November. Traded a 06 Acura TL for it. And have no regrets. Ive also owned GSR's, Accords, RSX Type S, 95 Civic B18 swap and let me tell you this little FiST is a blast! I am infatuated with this little car. I drive it for hours on weekends and never get tired. I just drive to get lost and explore new roads thats how much fun this car is to drive. Bought a Cobb Accessport tuner, flashed the ecu to stage 1 map and WOW its a whole other beast. Sooo much torque out this little 1.6L its unbelievable.
8 Months with this little rocket and the grin never goes away. I never ever in 23 years of car ownership put 9k miles on a car in under 8 months. I look forward to driving it everyday. Also haven't experienced any major problems with as of yet but its still early...knock on wood.
A lot of these people seem confused... This car was not made for fuel economy in mind. Its a sporty version of the regular Fiesta and it has almost 200HP and 200 foots pound of torque on a car that weighs less than 2700lbs. This is meant to be a nice a little performance car that you can bring in the backroads or race track and have fun, it was not made to get extremely good fuel economy.
My 06 focus hatchback is still in great shape to this day. Hope to get three or so more solid "no major repair" years out of it then upgrade to something like this. A sporty little coupe with surprising cargo at a reasonable price. Can't beat it.
I have a 2011 fiesta and its a good first car to own but the only thing people compliment about the car is how cute it looks. how easy it is to park. AND the ambient lights. females love the lights.
If I could afford a new car right now, the Fiesta ST would on my list. When I was growing up, small cars like it were called "pocket rockets". Love 'em!
There's something about this car that I love and I don't know what it is. The Focus ST is faster and more power and I normally like RWD sports cars like the Nissan Z, the Mustangs, Camaros, Porsche Cayman and BMW Z4. I don't know why I'm attracted to this little Fiesta ST but I want one.
+sharpemang bolt ons and this thing will beat the snot out of the heavier focus ST! exhaust, intake, larger intercooler, and a tune will get you around 220-230WHP and 300TQ! factor in a lighter car that handles better and boom!
+IcemanSam650 well man, i mean, if you spend that much money and want to tune it, why not just buy a more powerful used car and tune it and it will destroy a fiesta. why take a fiesta and make it a baby mustang when you can just buy a mustang? eh well, its the age ole argument of tuning vs. stock. to each his own. i just feel like, once you tune a fiesta ST or any tiny turbo for that matter, the car becomes a "starter car" until you have the money for something more powerful. then you get a focus st, tune it but lose to mustangs. then you buy a mustang, tune it, then lose to a shelby. and so on...
lmao, your reading too deep. The Fiesta is small and nimble, will out handle even a lotus elise let alone a mustang. Its great for small compact parking, gets 30mpg MIXED and nearly 40 mpg all highway. Modding a car isn't all about beating other cars, its about having fun.
After reading all of the "James May shirt" references, I see that TOP GEAR is truly missed!!! Oh and BTW, thank you Ford for keeping the manual transmission alive! Why can't I get a stick in a full size pickup anymore?!!
thanks for the review, We have bought two after seening the mods that can be done with them. After having 500 kw cars that you cant use on the roads and enjoy anymore the ST around the the streets will be great
Hey Cooley or anyone here on the comments. I am wondering how MUCH of a difference does it actually make having a moonroof when it comes to handling. Is it actually that noticeable?
A good alternative to the Scion FR-S. Same power, much more practical, 6MT (wow this is a rarity) economical & won't break the bank. The FR-S only wins in FR config vs. the Fiesta FF setup.
I feel like this is more of a direct competitor to the veloster turbo. More or less same power figures, same FF turbo hatchback configuration, both somewhat practical, around the same pricing, aggressive exterior looks. The only thing is, like Brian said, this car achieves what it sets out to do, but the Veloster doesn't really do it. It falls short in real value for the enthusiast
I feel that the focus st is more aimed at being the fr-s/brz competitor. The fiesta is a bit more economy based and going off of price range the focus st is in the same range as the brz/fr-s that said this is a fantastic little practical car that I may just buy instead of a more fun fr-s/brz
maximus9401 The Veloster is a joke. Getting into that back seat is horrible and that engine is soooooo weak! My girl's dad just bought that shit and I don't kick it with him hardly because he always wants to drive that junk.
Just bought this car today. I love it. I got everything but sunroof and the vocarro(spelling) seats. I prefer the normal seats just incase I do have a heavier person, or the casual passenger driving with me. All in all it is awesome, the torque is great!
Good sir, is that a George Roth shirt you have on? Looks like a George Roth shirt... And if I had the money, I would probably buy this car, it looks a lot of fun...
Great gas mileage and fun package, but if I could get the larger Focus ST or Mazda 3 with just a little less options, I'd rather go for one of those. Love the manual!!
Got mine with the Nav, Moonroof, and Painted Wheels and Calipers for 22,150. I'd say it bests the FR-S in price and power. Can't say for handling, but this thing is QUICK in the corners. Ultimately they are two different cars with different handling characteristics for different audiences. I like that the car definitely gets out of its own way, is fun in the twisties, is still capable of great gas mileage, and I can throw my wife and two kids in their cars seats in and putter around. FR-S is NA, two door, and barely enough room to call it a backseat, is RWD, and definitely looks cooler. It might be amusing to compare them, but they are two different beasts.
The other thing if I recall correctly, is that the FR-S requires premium and the Fiesta does not. If you want to throw premium in ther, you could also throw about 4-500 bucks for a COBB AccessPort, and you get about an extra 30 ft/lbs of torque out of the Fiesta on Premium, which is substantial with just a tune.
At 2:23 you mention the lack of a rear view camera on the 2014 ST. I've heard that the 2015 model now has a review camera. Can anyone confirm this? I'm just curious what's different between the two years. Thanks!
why oh why must you have 4 doors. if only we had the 2 door version in the u.s. i wouldnt have gotten the abarth. man this thing has better performance for all the cars at its price point but the styling, its like a roller skate from the side shot, or as someone i know put it, a small mini van. man the euro version 2 door is cool looking. oh well, maybe someday we will get a 2 door version...
I have one and don't underestimate it its faster than the register turbo and I beat a 2014 V-6 Camaro alike nothing in it its a fun to drive car and fast I wouldn't compare it to FR-S or BRZ it's a different segment but the fun factor is about the same or better. This st is better than it bigger brother in my opinion because at first I wanted the focus st but enjoy this guy more
I ended up going with the 4 door civic si over the fiesta st for my daily sporty driver. The nicer interior and reliability won me over. I wish I had those recaro seats though!
+buildmorefarms100 It's been great! I've had mine for 8 months and no problems. The short gear ratio can be a little annoying in traffic though. VTEC never gets old when wanting to have fun haha
The interior is meh ok then again it is a sub compact you don't really expect much in terms of "Fancy" I guess is a way to put it. Although the lay out of it is very simple very easy to use. I'll you what the fiesta ST ooooohhh is one fun little car
Eddie Nopakun Well that is kind of why i posed the question, there is barely a price difference between the two. Base on the focus is 23,500, fiesta is 21,400.
Trevor caton In fact trevor, i DO need more reasons, because most of what you listed simply isnt true. MPG isnt "way better" its 3 MPG better in the city and highway, sure its a gain but its not life changing. Most people say the focus ST is a magnificent handling car, i doubt the fiesta could improve much on this. Intake/exhaust sounds amazing on the focus imo, and from the videos i have seen i personally think focus sounds better (this is subjective obviously, but they sound nearly identical in terms of intake noise). Cheaper, as listed above there is only a 2,000 base price difference between the two cars, and browsing auto trader you can get a focus for nearly exact prices as fiesta in my area. Again trevor, i do need more reasons.
I looked at the FRS/BRZ but for me it just lacked a certain "gotta have it" quality. VW GTI: my past experience with VWs excluded it from consideration. Camaro: the only way I would have bought one is with the V8 and that is too expensive. Mustang: had one which the ex-wife got in the divorce, and the same as the Camaro (needs the V8 but that makes it too expensive). Civic Si: great car, but they are difficult to find, then when I found one the dealer was unwilling to budge on the price. I settled on a Fiesta ST.
TED Schmitt TED I never settle for any car. I get what I want or buy an old used car. The Si is not that expensive to begin with. Unless you are in Ca. I love the Fiesta St. I just like the BRZ better. I paid 26 for mine. You can buy a 2016 for 25k all day long. Wile Vw long term reliability is not great......neither is Fords. If you work it and get only performance options you can get a Mustang GT for just over 30k.
Sorry - I incorrectly used the word "settled". I also happen to work for Ford and get the employee discount, so a loaded ST was ~$23. I really wanted a Mustang GT convertible, but they are still $37+ with my discount.
Why do Americans feel they need stuff like reversing cameras? Here in the UK, very few people drive an automatic, and almost nobody has reversing cameras. Why not just learn to drive without needing any technology to do stuff for you?
As a U.S. citizen, I don't know either. I turn my head and shoulders when I need to check my blind spots or back up, and wish manual transmissions weren't so rare.
Congress passed a law that all cars must have a rear view camera by 2018. Car makers really don't have a choice. It's not about being lazy, it's more about safety.
In the states there are a lot more SUVs and larger cars with poor rear visibility (even small hatchbacks tend to have compromised visibility). Backing-related accidents involving young children are common and quite often lethal. Backing camera gives you more safety on that front. You can argue that all modern safety technologies are redundant and "unnecessary"; just be a better driver and you can do without traction control, electronic stability control, auto-braking, blind-spot monitoring, and any kind of camera and radar systems. But they have all helped reduce the rate of accidents and the severity of accidents. I have grown up in Europe and still have relatives in Europe, but currently live in the States, and I don't have the view that the lack of those options in Europe is advantageous. You want more options, not less, and the consumers can decide what is good for them.
I find the car very interesting; however if I am looking to save money as a commuter I would buy a car that delivers over 50 MPG and cost less than 20k bare bone which is Prius C. I agree that Prius is much less fun to drive with sport enthusiasm, but whenever I think about saving 6k to purchase the a car. I am willing to take that compromise
That's a complete apple and orange comparison though. If you want a sporty car you wouldn't get a Prius, if you want a super high fuel economy appliance you wouldn't get a Fiesta ST.
Or, you could get the 1 liter ecoboost Fiesta. With 123 hp and 148 torque, it isn't fast, but for mileage jockeys, it'll save you lots of pennies on gas.
"by the way, bas seats are heated" .....my ass, there not heated dude. your awesome though and your reviews are great....always on point (almost always) ;)
As someone who owns one, I never understood how people said it doesn't have turbo lag or torque steer. If you're really getting into it torque steers and if youre below 2500 and try to go foot to floor it's going to be a second before you get any boost
The Matrix is much slower than this plus its not as fun to drive. Who cares if its double the size? Most people who buy the Fiesta ST are young males who don't care about space and just want the funnest under 25k. And have fun paying for repairs once something goes wrong with the Matrix, where as the Fiesta will still have a warranty...
I guess most Americans are very lazy when it comes to driving, most cars in the UK are manual. Automatics cost more and you don't feel so in control. I wish the Fiesta ST was available in 5 door in the UK, then I might buy one, I don't want a 3 door car and that is the only one available in the UK. Ford have some strange ideas about marketing.
You would be correct sir.As an American it annoys me more people here don't know how to drive stick. I can't even find a second hand Golf without it having that stupid auto-manual gear box. Same goes with the Sportwagen.
The "Girlfriend you had in high school..." metaphor...
Couldn't relate.
***** forever alone
Right, Lol! Awesome!
Jonathan B I think that's why he said that
Same. 😞
Bought a fully equipped Fiesta ST for a little over 24k in November. Traded a 06 Acura TL for it. And have no regrets. Nice! I bought a Honda CR-Z 6-speed two years ago and really wish this car was available back then.. would have been a much more difficult decision.
I am in the same situation I have a 06 g35 coupe and really want a a fiesta st. I just don't know how I would look in one lol
8 Months with this little rocket and the grin never goes away. I never ever in 23 years of car ownership put 9k miles on a car in under 8 months. I look forward to driving it everyday. Also haven't experienced any major problems with as of yet but its still early...knock on wood.

The Everlasting Champ it does get good mpg’s though. this car is very special in a great way.
This guy is good at this talking about cars thing.
damn cooley diggin the shirt
My 06 focus hatchback is still in great shape to this day. Hope to get three or so more solid "no major repair" years out of it then upgrade to something like this. A sporty little coupe with surprising cargo at a reasonable price. Can't beat it.
Test drive Fiesta 2014 St b4 u tell crap, the new ST is considered worlds best FWD hot hatch with no LSD
Did you ever upgrade?
I love Cooley's reviews! Nice shirt too!
Love 'em!
good review on this car

sharpemang I just brought mine home yesterday, its super fun and nobody who has been inside expects the pull it has. I love it
+sharpemang bolt ons and this thing will beat the snot out of the heavier focus ST! exhaust, intake, larger intercooler, and a tune will get you around 220-230WHP and 300TQ! factor in a lighter car that handles better and boom!

sharpemang same here just not this color lol. check out the fiesta st rally racing videos here on youtube
That is the last shirt you wanna wear for a review in the future Cooley. =)
nice james may shirt. really getting into that age arent we
I thought the same thing. It must be the newest shirt from the James May Collection
After reading all of the "James May shirt" references, I see that TOP GEAR is truly missed!!!
Oh and BTW, thank you Ford for keeping the manual transmission alive!
Why can't I get a stick in a full size pickup anymore?!!
I drive a 2016 FsSt 2 dr RHD. Greetings from Pretoria South Africa. She is a beaut! Oh and I liked and subscribed.
Love the vision Ford has had with the current Fiesta and Focus.
Your HD camera is nice!
thanks for the review, We have bought two after seening the mods that can be done with them. After having 500 kw cars that you cant use on the roads and enjoy anymore the ST around the the streets will be great
Nice shirt Brian!
What part of the country and what city do you do your testing in?
Hey Brian, why are you wearing James May's shirt?!
You said you can connect your ipod but what about a zune or Android phone? Is there a aux line in?
3:56 "Torque vectoring by the brakes" So basically stability control LOL
Torque vectoring is not the same as stability control.
Dennis Xu REAL torque vectoring isnt
What were they thinking with that colour?
cnet's been pumping out reviews lately! but cooley, what are you wearing..
Hey Cooley or anyone here on the comments. I am wondering how MUCH of a difference does it actually make having a moonroof when it comes to handling. Is it actually that noticeable?
I like the lighting. it makes the car more customizable depending on my mood
Mr.Cooley please review 2014 Dodge Dart GT
how reliable is the fiesta st? im thinking about buying one pretty soon. if i do buy one its gonna be my daily drive to work and stuff, thanks
Sweet shirt!
The new cooper s is about the same price as this. Havent driven either but i like tne mini aesthetics over the fiesta, what say you?
what cars in thisprice range can math the overall pkge
A good alternative to the Scion FR-S. Same power, much more practical, 6MT (wow this is a rarity) economical & won't break the bank. The FR-S only wins in FR config vs. the Fiesta FF setup.

that said this is a fantastic little practical car that I may just buy instead of a more fun fr-s/brz
Sirref True true, but in terms of performance, it would aim towards the Fiesta.
maximus9401 The Veloster is a joke. Getting into that back seat is horrible and that engine is soooooo weak! My girl's dad just bought that shit and I don't kick it with him hardly because he always wants to drive that junk.
Cooley, please give back James May his shirt.
Oooh I've always wanted a car with it's own high-visibility jacket
Just bought this car today. I love it. I got everything but sunroof and the vocarro(spelling) seats. I prefer the normal seats just incase I do have a heavier person, or the casual passenger driving with me. All in all it is awesome, the torque is great!
Is this guy based in San Rafael? What I'm seeing looks familiar
nice little car, but would it be kinda expensive considering Mazdaspeed 3 & GTI starts at 24,000
Thanks...
That shirt...
Brian always says he doesn't listen to other reviewers etc b4 he reviews a car yet he did for this car
I wanna shirt like that
Good sir, is that a George Roth shirt you have on? Looks like a George Roth shirt... And if I had the money, I would probably buy this car, it looks a lot of fun...
Monsignuer Cooley has imparted his vast tech knowledge and cunning wit yet again. How would you rate the ST as a fun, hot hatch, Brian Cooley ?
please do the new honda pilot
Brian where did you get that shirt! I need it! Brian Cooley
you know why its a manual because its aimed at the english market where you wouldn't dare drive an automatic
His mannerisms are so flighty and nervous
Great gas mileage and fun package, but if I could get the larger Focus ST or Mazda 3 with just a little less options, I'd rather go for one of those. Love the manual!!
I want one, or two.
Seems like it would be a fun car for autocross days, actually any day of the week.
FR-S reliability is worlds better than the Fiesta if you keep cars a long time. Plus Scion resale is tops.
check motortren frs fiesta st frs wins in speed
At 2:23 you mention the lack of a rear view camera on the 2014 ST. I've heard that the 2015 model now has a review camera. Can anyone confirm this? I'm just curious what's different between the two years. Thanks!
yep 2015 & 2016 come standard with rearview camera
No rearview camera in the U.S.
why oh why must you have 4 doors. if only we had the 2 door version in the u.s. i wouldnt have gotten the abarth. man this thing has better performance for all the cars at its price point but the styling, its like a roller skate from the side shot, or as someone i know put it, a small mini van. man the euro version 2 door is cool looking. oh well, maybe someday we will get a 2 door version...
ルナロバート I think the 2 door is awful. Would only ever want 4 door.
Cm we also dont get the 2 door gti here in united states any more
Base seats are NOT heated. Or they forgot to add that feature to mine at the factory lol.
At least its real intake noise piped in instead if fake speaker noise
You think that touch screen is too small? You should see the crappy little unit we get in the UK!
No heat in the base seats.
Base seat are not heated.
Are the base seats really heated? If it came in 3 door i would buy one in a heart beat. Have you guys seen the 3 door version? more aggressive looking
Base seats are not heated.
i think the 4 door is still good looking just not feeling this color. i would go with orange or white with black rims
it's like driving a big jelly bean lol
A big happy, enthusiastic jellybean!
This guy is good.
I like the black supra in the background lol
I'm pretty sure that was a Ferrari.
Either way, it's more than you can afford, pal.
4:34 545m Maranello
Is the video quality poor to anyone else?
Cooley listens to Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones. OF COURSE!
I have one and don't underestimate it its faster than the register turbo and I beat a 2014 V-6 Camaro alike nothing in it its a fun to drive car and fast I wouldn't compare it to FR-S or BRZ it's a different segment but the fun factor is about the same or better. This st is better than it bigger brother in my opinion because at first I wanted the focus st but enjoy this guy more
good ol american review... love it...
Fiesta ST or Civic Si...? Opinions please!
I ended up going with the 4 door civic si over the fiesta st for my daily sporty driver. The nicer interior and reliability won me over. I wish I had those recaro seats though!
Nathan Farris The Si is not as ugly also...and much more reliable! How has it been so far?
+buildmorefarms100 It's been great! I've had mine for 8 months and no problems. The short gear ratio can be a little annoying in traffic though. VTEC never gets old when wanting to have fun haha
Nathan Farris What color? Year?
+buildmorefarms100 it's a 2015 model, blue
That shirt.
The interior is meh ok then again it is a sub compact you don't really expect much in terms of "Fancy" I guess is a way to put it. Although the lay out of it is very simple very easy to use. I'll you what the fiesta ST ooooohhh is one fun little car
Why would you consider this car over a focus ST? Genuinely curious to someone in the market for a car like this.
price
Eddie Nopakun Well that is kind of why i posed the question, there is barely a price difference between the two. Base on the focus is 23,500, fiesta is 21,400.
Fred Flintstone Small car. More nimble. I also like small cars that are fast
Smaller car, way better fuel economy, better handling, more engine/exhaust sound, cheaper. Do you need more reasons?
Trevor caton In fact trevor, i DO need more reasons, because most of what you listed simply isnt true. Again trevor, i do need more reasons.
i was able to get my Focus ST at that price :P
Why isn't this color available for the focus ST?!!! :(
It's
Pretty gross
But still not gross enough.
Excellent car. I would stick with the base car. There are better options at 27k.
Not in the U.S.
27k, FRS,BRZ, Civic Si, VW GTi , Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro are just a few. At 22k the Fiesta St is king.
I puked a little in my mouth.
Have this guy ever got a speeding ticket? While making those reviews?
I literally know every location this guy drives at in this video...
Cooley's costume designer should be fired. The french cuffs makes it even worse!
and u didn't thiml they can make any greener
But I really do like this car!
Reversing camera?! It's a Fiesta not a truck!
If you're looking for fuel efficiency and cost, hold out for the Elio. They're aiming for 84mpg, and $6800 new. :)
Allows you to monitor many of the parameters on your engine. amzn.to/Zlr2G9
"by the way, bas seats are heated" .....my ass, there not heated dude.
your awesome though and your reviews are great....always on point (almost always)
;)
Heated seats come with the Recaro seat package along with heated side mirrors.
i wish it was a subaru .damn
Cooley shirt is better than the paint job
I want to like this car....but it is just too much Ford. Hopefully they improve it.
car should start at 14k
YOU CAN'T GET HEATED BASE SEATS
Looks like a fidget spinner shirt
I would rather have the focus st. Not much more money and more livable back seats and space.
Have you ever sat in the back seat of a focus ST? very tight on the leg room.
Terrible leg room in the Focus ST. For the added 500lbs you would think there was a ton more space.
get with the program...get APPLE CARPlay FORD
all it needs is a 3.7L
knightrider1545 5.7 Hemi
vesa nevlund
I would say that but unfortunately dodge doesnt make a subcompact.
Why?
TED Schmitt
Its a screamer.
The amount of sun flare hitting the camera lens makes this video nearly unwatchable. Just saying.
As someone who owns one, I never understood how people said it doesn't have turbo lag or torque steer. If you're really getting into it torque steers and if youre below 2500 and try to go foot to floor it's going to be a second before you get any boost
NICE SHIRT LOL???
Busy pattern
He shoulda matched the colour of the car lol
In 1983 you could by 2 Cadillacs for the price of this car. End the Fed.
Found 1 Toyota Matrix ss very fas sport suspension default and double the size
The Matrix is much slower than this plus its not as fun to drive. Who cares if its double the size? Most people who buy the Fiesta ST are young males who don't care about space and just want the funnest under 25k. And have fun paying for repairs once something goes wrong with the Matrix, where as the Fiesta will still have a warranty...
I'd get a Veloster Turbo instead!
Those don't handle anywhere near as well. The Ford is better in nearly every way.
Have you driven one? lol
I have driven one, he's right, the Ford handles so much better that the comparison is not even fair
I've driven both. The Veloster is not even in the same league.
Rare as hen's teeth?
I guess most Americans are very lazy when it comes to driving, most cars in the UK are manual. Automatics cost more and you don't feel so in control.
I wish the Fiesta ST was available in 5 door in the UK, then I might buy one, I don't want a 3 door car and that is the only one available in the UK. Ford have some strange ideas about marketing.
goodchappy all cars in Iran are manual, 98 percent of them in fact.
You would be correct sir.As an American it annoys me more people here don't know how to drive stick. I can't even find a second hand Golf without it having that stupid auto-manual gear box. Same goes with the Sportwagen.
