  • Here’s some inspiration as you think about the upcoming Roxy’s Journal of Stitchery Project which has the theme of Field Notes.
This is a second hand book I had on my bookshelf that I thought you may like to take a look through with me. It is called Nature Diary and is by Janet Marsh. It was published in 1979 and republished in 1988.
From an article on Janet Marsh:
‘As a youngster in the 1960s, Janet Marsh spent hours beside England’s Itchen River while her father fished, closely observing the teeming life of the small English stream. Her love of wildlife there, and desire to draw what she saw, helped inspire her to become an accomplished artist.
In 1979, she published her “nature diary,” profiling the life of her beloved river with exquisite watercolor illustrations along with astute observations. She also added her voice and images to a campaign protesting the extension of a motorway over the river.’
The book contains incredibly detailed and often beautiful botanical and nature images as well as descriptions from her observations throughout the changing seasons.
I hope you enjoy this flip through of this inspiring book and that it gives you lots of ideas for your own slow storch field notes pr nature journal for the upcoming Roxy’s Jourbal of Stitchery.
    Cheers,
    Christine

Thank you Christine for your video and sharing with us this lovely book. It is so nice that you take us through your books at a steady pace so we can really see all the contents. Wild flowers are so pretty but I am very fond of fungi and lichen. My uncle painted in watercolour and I spent all my summer holidays with the family in the country. My aunt supervised my stitching and he supervised my painting. He used to take me on long walks with the dog so it was all hedgerows and streams in Scotland . I had a whale of a time sketching then painting back at the house. You don't realise how much you learn when you are a child, you absorb like a sponge. Fond memories that this book brings back.

How incredible those summer holidays must have been Carol. Wonderful to be learning to stitch and paint, amongst incredible scenery. Fungi and lichen are definitely favourites for me too. Endlessly fascinating. Hope you have a beautiful weekend. Cheers, Christine xx

The book reminds me of both A country diary of an Edwardian lady and the Brambley Hedge books. I may have just nipped over to Abe books to get a copy of this one 😉 Thanks for sharing

I’m glad you will have your own copy to enjoy. I’ll need to check out the Brambley Hedge books too. Cheers, Christine

So excited for the new volume. Thanks for sharing this beautiful book with us. I love your photo of your foraged nature with your annotations. One of things I want to do to warm up for this volume is practise handwriting more to get it neater, as I hope to combine paper and fabric this time round.😊

Beautifully illustrated book, thank you for sharing. If the British Summer was anything but cold, wet and windy I'd be tempted to go out into the local nature reserves. As it is I'll stay inside and read my BBC Countryfile magazines for inspiration 😀 PS: I'm getting thrifty Thursday withdrawal symptoms 🤣

Sounds like a very wise plan Linda! I hope some more summery weather comes soon but in the meantime stay cosy and enjoy the stitching. Cheers, Christine

I am going to participate. But I am not certain if I really want to do a book or some sort of large wall panel. I heed a headboard for my bed. So I am thinking of making the panels just like they are for a book, but quilting them together and then stretching them onto a wooden frame. I will hang on the wall at the head of my bed and it could serve as a headboard.

Hi Christine, thanks for sharing this author with us! Another artist/illustrator is Marjolein Bastin, she reminds me alot of Edith Holden. Check her out if you get a chance. I hope you have a great weekend! TFS 😊
