  • Ice Fishing for GIANT PIKE IS BACK! If I could only fish for one fish for the rest of my life, I think Pike would have an honest chance at being that species. I would rather not it be the only fish I fish for, but I do love chasing GIANT GATORS!

    MN catfisherman here. As others have said, you don't need to let them eat it forever. Also, you should offset your circle hooks a bit with a pliers. This helps a lot too! Additionally, use a BIG circle hook. As big as you can get away with. The bigger gap tends to help a ton with big baits.
    Also a knotless knot works well to act as a triggering effect. Look it up and you will see what I mean.
    Awesome video! Love that you're trying different tactics as I always wondered about circle hooks for winter tipup fishing.
    I've caught 30 catfish in a night with all of them being hooked shallow in the mouth. I've also caught dogfish on them and both fish swallowed it completely. They do work with some fish but maybe not all?

    I've fished big pike in open water and hard water with circle hooks. I've found you can set the hook fairly quick, with a "sweeping" hook set, and then you get that corner of the mouth hook-up. Hope this helps!

    The circle hook hardly ever works when you let the fish really choke down the bait. They function as advertised when set on a semi slack line. Good for when bait fishing with a set line right to drag. When they scoop the whole bait up and run right away then on that tight line it goes into the corner. When they have it in the stomach or super deep in the gullet it doesn’t function well,

    • @Tinystrom
      @Tinystrom 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup awesome for catfishing or any set line! Maybe if you put the line into the snow or something so it sets itself like it should. Interesting concept for tip ups though

  • @chewiepac5932
    @chewiepac5932 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Say clayton first hello from alaska, when your useing circle hooks for pike its not really settin the hook like lakers. Its more bring in line till you feel it resist let off and then kinda just fast lift the tip of your pole so the circle hook gets past the gill raker teeth, you want the hook to kinda make a pop or a quick very small jerk

  • @philboiteau6492
    @philboiteau6492 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey Clayton. I use circle hooks all the time when I fish for Channel Cats on the Red. Have been using them for years and 9 times out of 10 they are pinned in the corner of the mouth. We hit them really quick however and don’t give them a chance to swallow the bait down. That maybe the difference!! Regardless I am glad to see you experiment with circles. Your content is always informative and makes me a better angler. Tight lines

    • @ClaytonSchickOutdoors
      @ClaytonSchickOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe I need to try to hit them sooner. I just fear of the pike facing towards me and them coming right out. I will try a little more for sure!

  • @kaydee369
    @kaydee369 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Clayton, have you tried a snell knot or variation of snell on those hooks with the offset? It will help keep the hook shank straighter on hookset.

    • @dannym30
      @dannym30 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      100 percent agree. I use a smell knot with the offset circle hooks and I almost never hook them deep. I also find a better hookup rate on the offset circle hooks (gamakatsu) versus straight shank circle hooks

  • @nickholzworth2247
    @nickholzworth2247 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video! And for the circle hooks, I would say the only thing to change is not let them eat so long. If you watch videos of snapper fishing or grouper fishing in the Florida keys where you can only use circle hooks for those fish, you will notice with dead bait or live bait, as soon as the fish takes the bait you start reeling. No matter what hook you use if the fish eats long enough it has the potential to be swallowed.

    • @ClaytonSchickOutdoors

      Might be worth trying 100%

    For circle hooks, you want to have quite a bit of the hook exposed. From what I saw you put it pretty deep in the bait, which kind of makes sense why it kept going deeper down. Love your content, keep it up! Hello from Alberta

    I just stumbled upon your channel and I just want to commend you for your thoughtfulness for the fish. From your handling, to using hooks that are less damaging, to even how you make a concerted effort to limit the amount of time you spend fighting the bigger fish to limit fatigue. i let them take the bait with like 2 or 3lbs of drag tension on the line and it sets the hook but still lets them run. with finicky fish that you need to let eat the bait for a while i would stick with a single treble or octopus hook.

    I use circle hooks for ice fishing. English hooks as well. Works really well when your weeding through small fish looking for a big one. Keeps the younger gen safe and healthy.
    Possibly hook your bait just under the skin. Reeling in pulls the hooks out easier and let's the hook do its job.

  • @whomp11
    @whomp11 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Using a snell knot with heavier fluorocarbon should increase hooking in corner of mouth. Also gives you ability to set the hook sooner, hook bait lightly.

    Some tank pike!! I started running circle hooks rigging for walleye a few years ago. I won't go back to an octopus hook again, it's so nice when they are all hooked in the corner of the mouth. We definitely missed a few fish trying get the hang of it. If the circle hook has an offset eye, use a snell knot or a knot that ties to the shaft of the hook and not the eyelet. Keep tying them, you will grow to like them.

  • @tenaciousdan5831
    @tenaciousdan5831 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those circle hooks are most effective with an improved snell knot tied to the shank. Try a 60 or 80 pound flouro leader tied directly, instead of the clip from the leader. The clip from the leader prevents the effectiveness of the "hook in the corner of the mouth". Try a video with direct tied heavy leader material in the same location. I'd watch it. Cheers. Great content. Keep it up.

    Atta boy on the circle hooks! We never let them run at all! As soon as they are moving reel/pull them in. The type your using (bent end), should be tied on with a snell knot to work correctly. A straight end can be tied directly to eye.
