Guys. You are all saying that he is jealous. Maybe. But the most important thing is, if you don't remember : the last music piece is a composition of House himself. And when House stopped playingm it was because he had not written the end of the music, because he never was able to find the end. And the patient just continued, and finish the track. House is not jealous, he is stunned, because before him is something he made and is proud of, and he finally has closure on it. I truly think he is thankful, more than he is jealous.
House isn't jealous. He's in awe. A piece he couldn't finish was completed by someone in a hospital gown. For someone who had the answer to questions, he got his questions answered.
@@brendalg4 I've been in the company of genius, it always made me smile, the guy understood what I was saying and could continue the thought, I see a lot that most don't and cannot understand. I loved this episode and this scene was epic, House connecting with a patient but at the same time feeling a little jealous of his talent. Definitely this is one of my top 10 moments in the whole show
Sara Zonana he is just curious. Otherwise why would he take all the trouble to bring the piano in the first place, when you are jealous you don't give a damn! He has a good heart to see beauty even who are suffering from trauma.
No I wouldn't say that. There were two times in particular where this was the case where House was curious and jealous of someone while able to connect with them. One was the Sax player, the other was the gold digging psycho. There are times where House shows jealousy towards someone for having that same drive towards one particular subject in the same way he has towards problem solving. Its not displayed in a way of anger as most people who are jealous don't express negativity but instead bottle it up. When House is jealous you can see his demeanor change slightly and the case becomes a bit more personal for him probably because in a way he's trying to fix someone who's just like him, not in that meta way of fixing himself or anything like that but its just that odd connection.
House has nearly all his stats maxed out but every so often there is one patient who has one stat maxed out, like this guy and the chess kid, and gets jealous.
That's exactly what I was thinking too. He is way above average when it comes to pretty much everything but there are some people who are extraordinarily good at just one thing and he gets a little flustered.
From a musical standpoint, I see this as House speaking with the patient in a language the patient speaks back. The patient has a hard time with words, but can express themselves better via the piano. The chime at 1:18 repeated throughout the song sounds to me like, "Do you hear what I say now?" For a person as lonely as house, sharing this unfinished piece with a patient almost expressionless without the piano would be saying, "Hey, do I know how you feel?" and "Can you speak in this language, instead of words?" The first 2 chimes indicate an understanding. I feel house starts the conversation with something about himself, and the patient responds empathetically, but house doesn't want empathy more than he wants to know what is going on with the patient, and lightly suggests, "yeah but I want to hear about you." The patient responds, maybe nervously, since the patient perhaps doesn't get opportunities like this often (as per the dad doesn't know if the patient is happy, from the next clip Patient Savant Starts ...), or maybe because the patient may often not be heard when they say, and is afraid of that. House more forcefully pushes the patient to express, and 1:36 suggests the patient is trapped and feels frustrated and angry, as per the darker tone. The last thing was "do you hear me now?" And maybe house wanted the mri since he was shook, and wanted to make sure what he thought wasn't wrong, cause if he was right, "sucks man." I'm also not sure that this is truly an unfinished piece like everyone says, since (1:11) house is like, "eh, idk if it'll work, but don't think about it, let's just see," 1:26 house is like "Huh, this is cool and odd and interesting. I mean, I feel like if it was truly just unfinished, did house write in all the interruptions and pauses for response? Maybe, but I feel even more brilliant would be the ability to seriously understand what someone who can't speak is saying, no? Anyone can write a piece if they can try their best, right? That alone wouldn't say house has a lot of skill, since there wouldn't be a double ability to express in a conversation.
Unfortunately he wasn‘t actually playing the piano in this scene. If Hugh truly can play the piano, then this is a real shame because they could have allowed him both to record himself playing this piece and then, on set, to play “with himself” so to speak.
edit: sorry, upon closer examination Hugh was actually playing the piano, but for whatever reason the audio is a semitone higher than what he should be. For example the first note of this piece is a C# as heard, but Hugh plays a C.
Hes had a lucrative music carrer. All the scene of you see of House playing instruments/ singing is all him. When he does Georgia on my mind you can see the passion in his face as he plays. That's somethings that can't be faked, even by the best actors
My wife and I rat roll each other every single Monday. It started just a few months after we met when she brought up a tradition she had with her sister where every Monday they’d send each other “I don’t like Mondays” by the boomtown rats (the song played on the piano). Since then my wife and I have used the most outlandish and sometimes unethical methods of rat rolling each other, trying to be the first ones to either utter the words “I don’t like Mondays” or something similar, or getting the other one to hear the song. A harmless reminder of what day it is turned into our weekly war games and we’ve been keeping score for our whole relationship. We’ve lived long distance for over a year now and every Monday someone still wins. It’s been a great way to stay excited no matter how hard it gets or how much we miss each other. Today with very good luck, I have been blessed with the chance for next week’s victory. She won’t suspect a thing.
The reflection and juxtaposition in this scene is dynamic and transfixing. The patient’s contribution to House’s music conveys a deep and indissoluble sorrow. It transforms the peaceful tenure of House’s work into something more somber and haunting, evocative of a trauma long-held. This is reflected in Foreman’s comment to House- “An fMRI won’t show trauma”. And yet, the transformation provides House both catharsis and curiosity, a state of being he will impart back to the patient at the expense of his gift begot from said trauma. In his catharsis, House counters that he wants to “see the music”- the etiology of how the patient’s body has responded and matured despite its developmental divergence/arrest. It is both pathogenesis and healing, lucidity and shadow, truth and obscurity, mirrored and transmitted through music and medicine.
Nah, he just cares about the puzzle and what's interesting. He couldn't care less about the patient, though the actually interesting ones pique his interest enough to occasionally have a little be more interest in them outside the puzzle.
One of my favorite scenes from House. It's glorious. I also remember how House talked to Wilson about how the patient finished this incomplete composition he's had for so long.
What's amazing about this is that Hugh Laurie actually plays piano, meeting Dave Matthews must of been amazing on set. Hugh Laurie was literally born to play house.
Andrew Curley The first song is the opening of I Don't Like Mondays by the Boomtown Rats! Love that song. For such a disturbing song, the music was quite beautiful. The song was banned for quite a while here in the US as it was deemed inappropriate because the song was based on one of the first school shootings in the States.
It's not sweet, he doesn't care about him personally, just that he's interesting and House likes interesting, if he wasn't interesting he wouldn't care less lol.
You could actually see the pain and remorse in House’s eyes, both as a doctor and as a fellow pianist, knowing that this brain-damaged savant’s gift to create beautiful music is what’s killing him. It must be tough to hear that and then say that in order to live, you need to lose that talent.
Technically he didn't need his right brain removed, he has seizures yeah but his condition is manageable. Thing is house had an interaction with the guy while he was laying down on a check up table, clued him in that the guy didn't have much of a life because of his brain injury when he was 10. Turns out his right brain was weighing his left brain down, making it hard for the left to function to maximal capacity. In exchange for his gift the surgery gave him a "life". Probably calls back to that one sax player episode in the 1st season. His " One thing " Robbed him from anything else. Pretty interesting that House was very motivated to give him a life in exchange
Seriously, whoever the composer of this tune Was, he is a musical genius... It has melancholy, hope, a bit of mystery and lots of assuredness about the future... Lovely piece of composition tune so mesmerising, it's a compositional genius in itself
Interesting trivia for this episode: Hugh Laurie (House) is really playing all of his piano parts. Dave Matthews (patient) had to use a piano double for the more difficult parts.
The only ones saying Dr. House got jealous are the people who get jealous of others projecting their own insecurities on him. All I see in this scene is admiration from an artist to another. Ha!
I agree with Sara Zonana....Few times "House" connects with patients. And the piano music was really something. The piano can be such a moving instrument. All in the hands and mind of the person ..Hugh Laurie really does play the piano.
I don't label people as genius very often. In fact I don't think I have ever done it before. I am not lucky enough to have experienced exceptional people around me. Hugh Laurie's acting in this scene, the use of microexpressions, the corners of his mouth and the eyebrows is the closest thing to acting genius I have conciously seen. He's brilliant.
The acting performance from dave Matthew is stunning. First time I saw it I asked myself how they got a musicsl savant without social skills following acting directions.
You're all missing the point - this is what happens when a really... really... smart dude meets someone who is like a magnitude smarter or more talented - happened to me at first year uni in advanced calc - it is both sad and humbling and you never forget it
JamesJoyce12 lol it took until uni to meet someone smarter than you in a subject? Are you literally a genius in every field? Or what about like the arts or sports?
But how's that related to this scene? It's a doctor meeting a piano prodigy. Maybe his particular experience was in advanced calc, but it's not like that's an uncommon experience, and I'm sure he's experienced in other subjects.
meghneel chakraborty it's related to the comments related to this scene. A lot of comments claims that House was excited for finding someone as good as him in playing piano, and even more. James is saying that House isn't happy: he feels admiration and a little bit of sadness, mixed with humble; then he adds that he knows this feeling because he felt the same way in advanced calc. I don't get why this isn't related to the context, he's comparing the possible feelings of House with the same feelings he get in similar situations.
In this scene, House presented a song to the patient that he was stuck on and didn't know where to go with it with how far he got. The patient finished the song, right there on the spot.
Um....that's life? So if you lost your legs, would you instantly lay down and die? Just because you can no longer do that ONE particular thing you enjoy, you give up? It's a choice that comes rearing it's head eventually, especially with old age. You do realize time eats us alive right?
The brain injury that awoke his music mastery had begun to have dangerous side effects, including some that rendered him periodically and unpredictably unable to play, and some of which, if I recall correctly, could have eventually killed him.
I know this pain. I have a few guitar pieces, but almost no musical talent or knowledge - so often I can't resolve what I'm playing and it gets very annoying
This scene is about discovering communication, I think, opening up and being surprised the intimacy can be so revealing of your own, self perceived shortfall. It is unfortunate that the conclusion of this theme is beyond my ability to find, but House and Wilson discussion of this musical interlude provides the perfect conclusion.
Legend has it that after this episode both patient and doctor went on to create their own bands and live a prolific life. (PS: I know they both already have bands...so it's just a joke)
Any chance the bit of an eye blink by House was a suppression of a tear / emotions on hearing his original chords completed so well, or am I reading a bit into it?
Everyone says house is jealous and I'm not sure that's the case. I think he is dumbfounded because he wrote that last song but couldn't ever figure out how it should progress after the intro and then this savant comes in and finishes his song for him. He just automatically knew what needed to come next. I'm not saying he was impressed, but I don't think he was jealous
Guys. You are all saying that he is jealous. Maybe.
But the most important thing is, if you don't remember : the last music piece is a composition of House himself. And when House stopped playingm it was because he had not written the end of the music, because he never was able to find the end.

im jelly, but ill keep it to myself.. oh wait
Well said. I don't know how anybody could've gotten "jealous" from that scene and not "awe".
I don't think he is jealous. House is not the type to be. I think this scene shows one of the rare moments of House actually admiring someone.
yes, and not only that, he resents that he has to cut half this guy brain to give him a better life
It doesn't have to be one or the other. It can be both.
House isn't jealous. He's in awe. A piece he couldn't finish was completed by someone in a hospital gown. For someone who had the answer to questions, he got his questions answered.
I think he always wanted someone to finish that piece
You're exactly right. I have always wondered what percentage of people can pick up stuff like this.

First : The Boomtown Rats - I Don't Like Mondays
This scene is probably my favorite scene in all the seasons.
Once released, this patient went on to become a famous musician to all 90s college students.
The acting performance from dave Matthew is stunning. First time I saw it I asked myself how they got a musicsl savant without social skills following acting directions.
For me it's one of the finest impressive scenes of House MD. BEAUTIFUL.❤
You're all missing the point - this is what happens when a really... really... smart dude meets someone who is like a magnitude smarter or more talented - happened to me at first year uni in advanced calc - it is both sad and humbling and you never forget it
JamesJoyce12 I can totally relate to you
JamesJoyce12 lol it took until uni to meet someone smarter than you in a subject? Are you literally a genius in every field? Or what about like the arts or sports?
meghneel chakraborty he clearly said in advanced calc, so he was talking about being really good in that particular subject.
Really?
The silicon chip inside her head gets switched to overload.
THE SILICON CHIP IN SIDE HER HEAD IS SWITCHED TO OVERLOAD
I always get goosebumps at the part after he says: "my turn"
I have this exact same piano from my grandparents. The best series on television to date.
Dave Matthew's does some serious ACTING in this episode!! :)
This episode makes me a little sad, asking anyone to give up what makes them special in order to life a full life. What kind of choice is that?
Um....that's life? So if you lost your legs, would you instantly lay down and die? Just because you can no longer do that ONE particular thing you enjoy, you give up? It's a choice that comes rearing it's head eventually, especially with old age. You do realize time eats us alive right?
But he didnt give up piano, he just gave up the right side of his brain
@@EhCanadianGamer that's a different matter if you're an Olympic level sprinter not just a normal dude
The brain injury that awoke his music mastery had begun to have dangerous side effects, including some that rendered him periodically and unpredictably unable to play, and some of which, if I recall correctly, could have eventually killed him.
Is there only one thing which makes us special?
Is that last one an actual song? It’s lovely.
Teardrop - Massive Attack
Aaand, it's an actual piece if it exists. Even if it was written for tv. Doesn't have to be published on its own to be real.
Miss this show so much
See the music
House played some melancholy and deep but the patient gave it a more bright and cheerful tone
Dr. House is not jealous. He advocated for this patient to have a procedure to help him get his life back. No jealousy there.
For anyone wondering, the first song they play is I Don't Like Mondays by The Boomtown Rats
I know this pain. I have a few guitar pieces, but almost no musical talent or knowledge - so often I can't resolve what I'm playing and it gets very annoying
The patient is a good player he should start a band or something and name it after himself.
For music lovers this scene is a pleasure!
Interesting fact: in the first song, what you hear is exactly one semitone higher than what Hugh Laurie is shown playing.
0:21 What's the name of the first song he had him play?
“I Don’t Like Mondays” - The Boomtown Rats
Loved that first music part, later learnt what song it was about...

rob rick Oh my god...
rob rick this not only made my day, this made my life
"I think life is more like a box of ACTIVE GRENADES!!!!!!!!!"
Great piano sound for something resembling a spinet.
♥️Dave
2:08 - that look of “I just spent 5 hours building a house in the sims 1, and now I have to PLAY the game… damnit.”
For those looking for the name of the song its "I have no memory" by slacker
this has to be the best 3 minutes in the whole series....
I like how foreman smiles when they start playing
Best part is the smile the guy has when house claps during the pause in the music
Legend has it that after this episode both patient and doctor went on to create their own bands and live a prolific life. (PS: I know they both already have bands...so it's just a joke)
Definitely one of my favorite house scenes.
Ik
Any chance the bit of an eye blink by House was a suppression of a tear / emotions on hearing his original chords completed so well, or am I reading a bit into it?
Everyone says house is jealous and I'm not sure that's the case. I think he is dumbfounded because he wrote that last song but couldn't ever figure out how it should progress after the intro and then this savant comes in and finishes his song for him. He just automatically knew what needed to come next. I'm not saying he was impressed, but I don't think he was jealous
He should’ve played the theme for House MD and right after he’s done, glance straight at the camera for just a moment.
The song is “I Don’t Like Monday’s” by The Boomtown Rats
House be like: let me play you the music of my people
