Lots of people use mason jars to store theirs in so just throw a lid on it and store it till use it again. (Obviously the lid is usually metal) but as long as you don’t go shaking around all the time should be fine
So ironic y’all posted this today TC, because I literally just did the same finish on my ASK titanium liners and hardware, and was putting in an order for the TI para3 scales on Friday for the same purpose! Awesome finish

Dude this looks absolutely stunning. Did i get you right that i could do this to a set of orange peel textured scales with similar results? How does it differ? Thanks
Obtenir un couteau avec du super acier signifie souvent qu'il est plus difficile à aiguiser mais que vous n'avez pas besoin de l'aiguiser aussi souvent
Great video, my only issues as someone who has been burnt pretty good / bad in the past. I wouldn't suggest wearing those gloves when using a torch. If you had an accident they'd melt right into your skin. Definitely not a pleasant feeling having a burn site scrubbed clean.
Is it worth it,well HELL Yeah!!Totally makes the knife unique,oh my grandpa ask me one day,he said son how do you catch a rabbit,I well unique up on it and hit it with a 22....Beautiful knife, one day it will be up for auction on some well auction, great vid love the chann we'll see ya!
How does the "lightning" pattern come through? Is that just what happens when it's quenched in the -water- oil? Is there a way to control the "entropic-ness" of the pattern/finish?
This pattern is after quenching in Ferric Chloride Acid and the main control is the heat how dark you get it when torching really sets up the pattern... I did not heat mine evenly because I wanted the variation, but with a more even heat you get a more consistent pattern.
I don't go by specific temperature, I just heat them until they start to change color and then the key is quenching them in Ferric Chloride Acid... that is what I quench them in, afterward I rinse them in water.
@@sAssclown yes. I never get the bright blues and purples. Always more muted. Like bronze and some dark blurple. It’s a neat finish but not what I’m trying to accomplish.
Not exactly. With steel it'll turn colors under heat but not as crazy. Also ferric chloride will etch up the finish so you wanna go straight to water once you see the color you want with the torch.
you should have spoke more about technique. like how to get more of the electric look. Like more or less heat..how you dip it into the acid.. how long..
They weren't doing a lightning anodization tho, he was doing a entropic. If you want an electric lightning style, you're watching the wrong video. Read the title or watch the whole thing next time
I know you talked about safety in this video in regards to gloves and eye protection. You failed to mention thou that ferric fumes are highly carcinogenic to your lungs and can serious long lasting effects if it's not done in a well vented area, while also wearing a mask that is chem rated. I know the intent of this video was to show how easy it is to put a cool finish on some scales but not even mentioning that stuff seems like a big miss. Ferric is no joke and will mess you up.
Yeah so on my birthday I get the spyderco PM2 in fat carbon uncoated M4 and when I opened the pkg the spydie box had a rubber band around it, so I opened that to find somebody's greasy fingerprints all over the blade and their arm-hairs!!! Wowwww was I disappointed, if I wanted you to test out my knife for me I'd ask also I kind of prefer the patina to be my own DNA so don't sell a knife that you have "USED" to display or to make videos as a "NEW-NEVER USED" knife because you have certainly "USED" it have you not?!?!? I've spent tens of thousands of dollars at SMKW and you've just lost a customer
There was also a big flat spot on thee edge apex where it must have been dropped, to a user im sure these things would not matter but I am a knife collector with intent of future resale but I certainly cannot sell this as an unused knife because that is not what it is at all and you should not have either!!!
I apologize for this we have a 30-day return policy if you will contact our customer service department at 800-327-5871 Monday through Friday from 9 am to 6 pm EST they will be happy to assist you.
I always wanted to learn how to do this finish thanks TC.
Thanks for watching Jeremy!
Thx for the video!! Say how long do I heat the metal for?
Those scales came out beautiful.
They are very eye-catching and TC has been EDCing it since 👍
Great tutorial I have a question though what kind of container should I use for the ferric chloride when quenching it and for storing it after
The Ferric Chloride comes in a plastic container but we use a glass jar like what we used in the video as an extra safety for the heat from the flames
Lots of people use mason jars to store theirs in so just throw a lid on it and store it till use it again. (Obviously the lid is usually metal) but as long as you don’t go shaking around all the time should be fine
Wow. Awesome end product there TC. Made it look easy
Thanks for watching Mike R!
My favorite ano finish by far!!
Thanks Steve!
I'm diggin it!! I'll be doing it to a few for sure!! Thanks for sharing brother. From New Mexico, Cheers!! 🍻🍻👍🇺🇸🤙🇺🇸✌️
Cheers Richard 👍
What was the first thing you dipped it in after heating? Water and then rinse with water?
fluoric acid

Looks great TC, did you use the Jantz ferric chloride etching solution listed on the SMKW website?
Yep! That is the one 👍
Coolest scales I've seen
Thanks AR👍
Doing this on my 20.5 ti next week!
Hope it turns out well!
Is it really that easy?!?
I can not, not do this now
Thanks for posting
Let us know how it turns out!
Thank you TC
Thanks KJ!
Is the ferric chloride diluted at all?
Nevermind I used 1 part FC mixed with 2 parts water and it worked perfectly. I had no idea it was this easy. Looks amazing
Nice! Keep playing with your mixtures and voltage to get something truly unique as well
PM3 is a great EDC. Nice job on the scales!
Thanks SB!
Beautiful.

Will pure acid works too?
We use ferric chloride acid so we can't speak to what works more. Always do research and use safety equipment
Nice TC did they give you any kind of discount because of Who You are?
We charge TC double for most things just out of principal
Tempted to do this on mine. Damn near the same exact knife, I just have Flytanium scales.
Should work about the same then, let us know how they turn out 👍
So how do you get rid of the acid afterwards

What do you recommend to clean these and keep the finish bright and vibrant?
I would recommend something like case paste or flitz to periodically clean but they are relatively easy to just wipe down.
Windex
What do you dip the scale in after heating? Water to quench? Thanks
Water to get the ACID off!
It is a Ferric Chloride Acid used for etching.
Ferric Chloride Acid

How hot did you get the scale before quenching in the water? I haven’t had much luck with heat anodizing. I think I always get the titanium too hot.

Where do u get the acid? All I did is apply heat to get the blues and purples in a exhaust tip style fashion on a TI light and pen oh well haha
I ordered thru Amazon. 20 bucks for a quart. ;
