  • Check out our latest Video in our Royal Enfield 650 series of modifications. In this video we modify the air intake on our Continental GT 650 and we also discuss whether you should or should not replace the stock air filter with an aftermarket washable lifetime filter such as a DNA or K&N type filter. Please feel free to comment below and give us your opinion. Thanks again for watching and joining us on our journey as we modify this fantastic motorcycle.

    With all my yrs of technical engineering i am pretty positive that the stock intake components are Totally sufficient for this stock engine' even with any free flowing Exhaust! The exhaust choices can and will change torque ranges in certain RPM ranges.
    Which in most cases stock configuration will give you best Top End.

    I like that you've added a thumb screw for that side cover. I did the filter swap on mine when I put on the S&S exhaust and used a DNA filter/ring (never had issues with washable filters) but I took it one step further and used a hole saw to pop a 1" hole above/below the Interceptor badge. I then made a die and hammered some stainless mesh out so that it would bubble out through the holes and epoxied it in place. Now I'm pulling in clean air directly into the filter without it having to just come around the sides of the cover and has an added bonus it looks cool lol.

      Yes the thumb screw is just a Go Pro mount screw, workd great!! I'd love to see your mod of the side cover, great thinking outside the box. I was thinking of drilling some holes on the side of the cover to make it a bit easier for the air to enter.

    A well presented, rational argument for using the stock air filter element. Some folks will say the oiled gauze filters flow more air and it's true, but the gauze filters also don't filter dirt as well as the paper ones do. On a race motor that gets rebuilt as needed, performance, not longevity, is the goal. There's no free lunch.
    I suggest you gently curve/radius the edges of the intake retainer plate to smooth the incoming air. Those sharp, 90 degree edges create turbulence that reduce air flow.

      The study I read said that paper filters flow more air and filter air better. This is what my technical college teacher told us 40 years ago.

    My thoughts exactly! Surely it’s better to have a clean stock filter than a dirty old DNA or K&N. None of these supposedly performance filters will have any significant effect in the real world anyway! Nice money maker though !😁🇬🇧

    Nice idea, however the sharp 90 degree intake ends add turbulence to the incoming air. A better design would be to taper the incoming side much like a velocity stack to smooth the flow and actually make the air more dense. A small design change but for the better. I'm sure you'll agree..

    Good video, Albert! I've always used K&N filters in my Jeep. They're also an oval design so you'd have the same cleaning issues you're talking about. I've never noticed and issue getting them clean in the past. Do you think it's more difficult with the RE K&?N filter? I know the area inside is a little smaller, but I never went in through the inside to clean it. I always use compressed air with a rag in the middle of the filter. I do like the idea of not spending $60-70 for a filter though. I think I'll try the cover delete like you did when my TEC 2-1 exhaust arrives in a few weeks.

    • @losttogether4ever
      @losttogether4ever  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment Erik, I think the RE K&N type filter, firstly has a smaller surface area to filter and also can never really be cleaned thoroughly back to the way it started out new. Just my opinion though.

    • @ErikAzar
      @ErikAzar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@losttogether4ever I think that is reasonable. Like you said in your video i believe, these aren't higher performance engines in stock form. So we're probably find using the stock filter, but then open up the airflow more so it's not as restrictive. I'm just looking forward to getting my TEC 2-1 in a few weeks.

      I heard about some people saying there was an increase in intake noise but I really couldn't tell the difference, could be due to having the TEC 2-1 exhaust as well.

    All beer bottle engineers :) be aware - you will be getting water droplets in your engine in the case of a heavy rain and high rpm / speed, as well as violating your warranty. The snorkel is designed to stop water droplets getting into the air intake. I will use the original cover and the DNA filter instead. DNA filters are soaked with oil what is an excellent water repellent to keep mist / droplets out.

    • @losttogether4ever
      @losttogether4ever  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I both agree and disagree with you, the snokel size and direction is designed to allow the specific volume of air to flow into the engine coupled with the size of throtttle bodies, combustion chambers and exhaust all being stock and restrictive in order to make a set amount of power and keep emissions withing the design parameters. When you change the exhaust to free flowing the only way to achieve a benefit is to open up the intake to allow more air in. The stock snorkel is a choke point. The side covers provide an amount of protection from splashes or large droplets of water from entering in to engine. My dealership advised me that replacing the snorkel cover would not void the warranty, most dealerships will gladly sell you the DNA filter and an exhaust system with no impact on your warranty.

      @@losttogether4ever I don't care if people agree, it's their engine to reck, free country. As engineer however, I can tell that the snorkel design is not to restrict air (aprox. 40L per second can go quite easy thought that hole), but to suck the air from back/down direction e.g. the direction from where the water drops won't be able to enter as they need to turn 180 to enter the snorkel.

  • @daveinwla6360
    @daveinwla6360 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very few automotive air filter reviews actually measure particle filtration, but rather low air restriction.
    And there lies the trade-off. The "hi-perf" filters have low restriction, which results in more power and
    better fuel economy - both easy to measure. But those few reviews, some of them on TH-cam, which
    actually measure particle retention, show that they also let more particles through with the greater
    air flow. 😡 A better snorkle - or no snorkle - would be more effective without affecting filtration, as
    would also a larger airbox-and-filter assembly. One can easily see the engineering design decision
    which went into the air intakes of modern bikes (as opposed to the classics).

    Dynos don't lie

    • @losttogether4ever
      @losttogether4ever  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No they don't, I've yet to see a dyno result that shows any significant improvement in power with just a reusable air filter. When you also change the exhaust and the snorkel it breaths better for sure, whether it has a K&N filter or the stock paper filter. However, as the filter gets dirty it clogs and breaths less freely, with a paper filter you just replace it and you are back to square one, with a totally new filter. You will never be able to clean a K&N filter back to brand new especially with the RE style of filter because it breaths from the inside of the filter not the outside those nooks and crannies are next to impossible to clean properly. Furthermore as an oiled filter traps and accumulates dirt it slows down the airflow in my opinion. I have an open mind though if you are able to find an unbiased report not promoted by a filter company let me know. I'm hoping that Fortnine will do a comparison one day to either prove my theory or not. It just seems to me that it's a placebo type false sense of improvement.
