Thought I'd share this story, in case it helps anyone else experiencing the same issue. Garage replaced my 2007 Outlander radiator for $800+, but I quickly discovered the AC wasn't working when I drove away (in 100+ degree weather). They checked over the car and told me the compressor had failed - which would be another $1K+ to replace. I said it was just TOO coincidental, but they assured me the compressor was no way near the radiator that they'd worked on. I'm not a mechanic, but after watching your videos and doing a little more online self-study, realized that there were things like the high-pressure sensor that connected from the condenser in front of the radiator to the compressor. Something that would stop the compressor clutch from engaging if damaged/unplugged. Returned to the garage and asked them to show me where the high-pressure sensor was on my car. The mechanic reached in past a panel and lifted a wire to discover a disconnected plug at the end! He stared at it for a moment, then turned to look at me sheepishly before plugging it in. Car's ice-cold AC immediately back in action. Glad to have saved myself $1K, and I still don't want to be crawling around cars myself in 100-degree weather, but this was either incompetence or an intentional effort to rip customers off. I'm not sure which is worse.
Very thorough man. Most shops would have just checked freon pressure and if good told the lady "yeah you need a complete compressor assembly" without testing OR looking around for aftermarket clutch kits for her. I can't tell you , even as a man, when I was younger how many different shops would lie or not properly troubleshoot and just throw parts at a problem. That is why I taught myself how to fix cars. Wish you were local I'd use you for some repairs as I am older now, have no lift, and my body is falling apart on me.
The scope on the rope saves the day! I just did a similar diagnosis on my Mazda 3. All the circuits where getting power but when I jumped the ac clutch nothing happens no click, nothing. Time for a new clutch hope I can find one on the aftermarket. Your video was a great help! Thanks as always!!
South Main Auto Repair I also agree too that you minest well replace the whole compressor incase later down the road it self decides to fail or something of that nature. Hopefully there is a part 2 to this car. I can't believe it cost that much to replace the compressor on this car or clutch.
Hello, I just subscribed to your channel. I own a Mitsubishi 2011 outlander sport and the 2010 SE. The sport witch is my wife car the AC went off. I was checking (I am not a mechanic) and I I think I might have the same problem with the compressor. I will check a bit deeper now that you guided me a bit more. Today is 03/26/24 I will keep you posted. Thanks So much for Making such amazing and honest videos.🙏
Good video and diagnostics, I just happened to put a new clutch assembly on Honda Odyssey today. With no low priced clutch assembly available then I would also go with the aftermarket AC assembly.
The compressor bearing on my 96 GC was growling so I thought I would just replace the bearing then realized I had to remove rivets so I returned it and bought a complete compressor on ebay for 100.00 rebuilt one, put some oil in and it was fine. Like you think sometimes easier to change the entire unit and HOPE it was checked thoroughly for rebuilding- You give good step by step diagnosis
Thanks for the video Dr O. It's looking like you'll be at 10K subscribers by the end of the day, definitely by Friday! Let me be the first one to congratulate you! 👍👍👍
Great diagnosis and video. A married man has to be careful when he starts talking about a "HOT" lady. Ha Ha we know you were kidding and where that was going. Looking forward to part 2.
Great diag! I know a lot of people that would sell a compressor right off the bat. I work for a dealership and techs are on flat rate so you know how that goes haha
I see you've changed the title to Part 1. Looks like we'll get to see a Part 2. What's it going to be though? A clutch or compressor? Oh the suspense. We'll all just have to stay tuned to the next exciting bat episode. :)
I agree with you on replacing the whole compressor rather than just the clutch. Sometimes going the cheaper route becomes more expensive. Any chance of having the original one rebuilt?
I had the exact same scenario in this video on my 1993 Miata except my "refrigerant temperature switch" was bad. I looked into wiring diagrams and the switch was no where to be found. Apparently they come built in the compressors and are non-serviceable. My solution? I cut the power wire in to the switch and the power wire out of the switch and connected them together. First try after that and the A/C clutch kicked on and out the vents came ice cold air. I had the car 3 years prior to this with no A/C and finally got around to looking into it. I can't believe that was all the problem was and that my car still has the original R12 system going strong. Sure one day the consequences of that switch not being in line could come to haunt me, but I would have had to replace the compressor anyway to fix the switch.
What’s the white hose for ? The 2017 has a different casing and the replacement came with a white hose instead. It’s working fine but The white hose is just hanging there now. Is it that big of a deal?
Is there a video, or could you tell, what could be the cause of the following A/C problem with my Outlander 2011 : When moving knob for cool air below my feet or by the windshield it works okay, but when requiring cool air from the front panel vents there is almost nothing of air flow. Thanks in advance, Arturo.
As always, informative video Eric. Keep up the good work. I would still work for you, outta your tool box, of course :) ha ha ha. . You never know you might need an old man in a wheelchair for something. :) ha ha I am never ceased to be amazed at your thoroughness.
Hey Garlin the job opening is still available, I thought i had the job last week. Eric has a real nice building out back of the shop and he said i could bunk down there for free. Eric looks after his employees like no other , just cant say enough, super great guy. Eric reads all the comments so you may have a shot at the job. I wish i could taken the opportunity to work with Eric but I'm allergic to chickens :)
Steve Rob Garlin Willingham ... Lets see. Canadian or old guy in wheel chair..... Heck why don't you both come on down. Steve, leave the Old Mill up north and I will buy you a real beer...
I have a 2014 Mitsubishi outlander 2:4 how do you get the valve cover off ..I have it loose ..do I have to remove the actuator in the front by the intake
HI friend. i need your help . can you please help me to tell me how to change spark plug on mitsubsh outlander instyle xls 2007. 2.2 D-D? If you can show me or send me some plan or guide me how to do it? i will be very thankful. thanks
Hi Eric re your comment about the cost of OEM parts. Car manufacturers worked out long ago the most profitable side of the business is spare parts. No money to be made selling cars these days, just slug the buyer when its time for OEM parts. They get you in the end. The rust belt of North America is obviously very profitable! Cheers
South Main Auto Repair - we need the refrigerant drained in order to replace the leaking receiver dryer. Will any auto repair shop do it, and what's a normal price? Any other options? Thanks!
what wiring diagram do you use? Mitchel on demand? on mine everything is black and white, the wires are not color like yours if you are using Mitchel how do I get it to show in color?
what would it be if you jump the clutch and it runs but once you disconnect the clutch stops and the compressor wines real loud but then stop wines so got the clutch to start but then it stops is it the clutch or compressor cause compressor runs then we jumped the clutch and it starts
WHAT'S THAT ..... There's plenty of hot customers in Alaska , there's that one down the road from you in Wasila , she almost made it to the Whitehouse :) Tim the next time your filming a repair vid could you point the camera out the shop door, I always wondered if you could see Russia from your place as well. LOL
Jarr0d The only place where you might see a lot of A/C work during winter is South Florida. I remember my first Christmas in Miami it was 100F Christmas day... yup.
Wow, now with voice over? You are getting too professional now on the video editing!! I was expecting the rock music..:-) Finally a Mitsu on the shop, it seems they don't break down often (I own a 2009 Lancer) Or maybe they are not many out there. South Main Auto Repair Hey Eric, speaking of Mitsubishis...I might be driving up to Ithaca in the next few weeks and plan to swing by your shop with my USB memory drive! My friend says he can probably get those corrupt video files uploaded :)
Hey I’m looking for answers on why a 2015 outlander would have ac issues while driving but not while idling/parked when in idle ac pressure stays steady if it is reved up pressure drops causing compressor to shut off then pressure rises to turn back on. What is the issue
A "scorcher" in NY at 84 in the shop??? Absolutely frigid. Yeah, I know....the push back is y'all walking around in short sleeves at zero degrees, while people down south break out artic parkas....
@Steve Rob Man I had no idea chickens were involved. I guess I'm out of the running. Somebody else will pony up the $$$$$ (mucho dinero) to work for him. :)
AC (clima) on my Outlander working only when car is cold and working only 10 min. In that time compressor going on and off such as fan also. Intervals between on and off are 30 sec. (cca). After 9 min fan working all the time but compressor don´t wanna go on and stays like that. Some ideas ???
Hey dude. Sorry for the randomness... But when it comes to rear drum brakes, I have a 2005 cavalier that one of them went for a good while with metal to metal. I didn't have the money to replace the drum at the time, so i just put new pads on that side. I am pretty sure they have wore down pretty well pretty fast because of that, and wondered, can I just replace the drum on that side and be fine? I know you aren't supposed to for disc brakes, but I have limited knowledge about drums. Likewise should do new pads if they aren't wore all the way? I wont know until i get them off of course, but want to plan ahead. It was such a pain in the ass to get the drum off that last time. Hours. Probably because metal to metal I guess... Thanks
Christopher Harper New drum(s), new shoes, and expect to spring for a hardware kit. Can't cheap out on brakes. If money is that tight, look up a company called "RockAuto dot com" and see if ordering them in works for ya.
Tedybear315 Love +Rockauto for brakes. Just bought drums, shoes, hardware kit, wheel cylinders, all Raybestos for $118 shipped to my door. Advance, Autozone, Amazon, Ebay... nobody could beat their prices on premium grade brake parts. They are based near Madison, WI btw.
Coming up on 10k subscribers Eric, Wonder if you got anything planned for the occasion? At your current rate you are going to hit that in 12-18 days. EDIT: Oh wait, make that 2-3 days... I got that all backwards...
for my 2006 duramax, i needed a coil it was 440$ for a new coil assembly, but 480 for a new compressor, and i work for GM so my discount is really good, the coil was after market, so obviously i bought a new compressor but just insanely expensive for a coil of wire.... oh well
South Main Auto Repair Thank YOU! I sincerely mean that too. I know how hard it is to be a mechanic and run a shop. Making videos is just another job on top of a job. Even with all that going on, the quality of your videos is excellent. Your channel has become one of my absolute favorites!
Thats the problem with rebuilt products. You get a lifetime warranty but end up changing them out every two years. Im too old for that. New stuff for me.
Why are main dealer parts so expensive ? Surely in the interest of good customer relations with an eye to future purchases, the price tag should be reasonable.
Hum - first you have a "HOT" lady that owns the car , then you have a Lady inside the car turning the AC , on-off and now your going to make a call to her and recommend the best solution for another great vid for part 2. Ok Eric just one question , when you make the call is the lady going to answer the phone and say "SOUTH MAIN AUTO" - "HOW MAY I HELP YOU" 👍
Have you ever screwed up that screwdriver(pun unintended) clutch method and launched it across the garage? We could make a reality show out of that one.
Thank God no jackass went to town pumping that system full of refrigerant from their local parts store. You would be surprised at how many things on a modern system can be diagnosed without manifold gauges. You would certainly feel stupid to "hang parts" when the entire time the freakin ac clutch relay has an open coil, LOL. Now Eric, get back to work....
My car had the ac problem....basically the compressor wasnot engaging...after some tests we found that the has escaped and so the ecu wasnot turning on the comressor irrewpective of switch position...we found the leak...it was the low pressure pin that was leaking...it was a dollar ...finaly we refilled the gas and everything wqs fine
K Brought a junkyard compressor for my Ford Ranger and when I sold the Ranger, the AC was still cold enough to hang meat in front of the vents. Just don't buy one from a car that was in a front end collision.
Upallnight oh yeah. I do actually advice to look for a low milage junk yard car preferably its life was ended due to a crash. As its compressor will probably be orginal
K I never ever buy denso parts because of the way they treat their employees. I worked there as a temp in 2010 (only way they will hire you in) and have family that still works there. That company completely owns you. They even have rules that dictate the way you behave outside work, and you actually can be terminated for violating them. In fact the entire time I worked there ( I did the required 6 month assignment in order to take the test to be hired) there were 2 lines that worked 7 days a week, 12 to 16 hour shifts with no day off. 6 months with zero days off. That was the seatbelt line and the starter armature line. Most lines including the one I worked on would frequently work 2 to3 weeks straight with some back to back 20 hour days, with most averaging 14 to 16. Now the plant nearest me has recently built many amenities such as a medical center and gym, in order to control their employees further. Now I'm in no way lazy or a chronic complainer. I understand overtime is a part of any job, and that there are rules with any job, but I have never seen more miserable people in a job in my life. And for what? Money? $18 an hour should not require that much sacrifice. I think it takes 5 years to make that even.
Jacksonkellyfreak Welcome to the new world order. And everybody was happy when Regan killed the unions by breaking the Airline Controllers Strike. How happy are they now? America is on a one way ticket to the bottom, unless you're rich in which case life is good, since workers no longer have representation or any power whatsoever.
SATAMAN Schmidt exactly. I actually was in a union and let me tell you, they bent over backwards to keep us happy. Unfortunately the company went under in 2008, but it was great until then. I can't convey how utterly miserable that place is. Rereading my comment just sounds like whining and pissing about a job that I didn't like, but it was far far more than I can put into words. Plus when you have people on shifts like that, you can't expect quality. And if a part fails by so much, on the order of thousandths of an inch, it has to be scrapped and remade. Well, it's a vicious cycle because the more they work the more they get behind, therefore necessitating more overtime. Also they only run 2 shifts on most lines, one on some, and the actual answer I got straight from the head of the plant was that adding a 3rd shift (technically it would be a 2nd shift hour wise) would cut production because of the downtime between shift changes and having to do part checks where you inspect a random part on each line and test it to failure. You could imagine the relief it would bring to these people. In 6 months I knew 3 people who got divorced. And the family member I mentioned? He lives 5 miles away and I only see him a handful of times per year.
This is why my 73 Dodge W100 doesn't have A/C...............................I prefer my 2 wing/65 A/C..............All of you old timers will know exactly what I mean...LOL
Pomona Bill my old 73 W100 Dodge has never seen 85mph....LOL............well maybe once when I was drafting a tanker truck...but the poor engine was screaming..LOL

there a lot of little tips and tricks that will sus out bad parts or failed fuses, but thats just a crappy garage and I would never go there again.

Eric, plain and simple, you need a syndicated TV show.............Your far better than some of those yahoo's on tv now.
Jeffrey dontyouwish Still waiting for the big wigs to call haha
The scope on the rope saves the day! I just did a similar diagnosis on my Mazda 3. All the circuits where getting power but when I jumped the ac clutch nothing happens no click, nothing. Time for a new clutch hope I can find one on the aftermarket. Your video was a great help! Thanks as always!!
arcdraw Cool , I am glad to hear it helped.
I have 2012 Outlander so this video may be very useful in the future. I hope you get to repair the AC.
Nice diagnostics on the clutch Eric with a good explanation in your thinking process. On to part 2...
stuzman52 Thanks Terry, I know this one wasn't super complicated but fun all the same.
@ 0:07 "Mitchubichi" haha!
Great vid as always though. Shows that it's not always a lack of refrigerant that causes a compressor not to turn.
***Classified*** True story
Tis the season. I like hearing your thought process. Thank for the video.
Another excellently described and thorough diagnostic.
South Main Auto Repair I also agree too that you minest well replace the whole compressor incase later down the road it self decides to fail or something of that nature. Hopefully there is a part 2 to this car. I can't believe it cost that much to replace the compressor on this car or clutch.

Cadde Haha yep just hit it now I see....
Gracias por la información
I have an issue 14 months later after replacing the Compressor last year. Darn thing is almost $1200 bucks from the dealer bought new.
i agree Eric, customer would be better off to replace the compressor.
super coupe That is what will be in part 2 when the car comes back.
for my 2006 duramax, i needed a coil it was 440$ for a new coil assembly, but 480 for a new compressor, and i work for GM so my discount is really good, the coil was after market, so obviously i bought a new compressor but just insanely expensive for a coil of wire.... oh well
Kevin Rogers Seems a little pricey yeah
84! I dream of 84 degrees in August, usually it's 95-105 degrees here in tx
10K subscribers! Congratulations!!!
GRowe1978 Thank you sir :)
South Main Auto Repair Thank YOU! I sincerely mean that too. I know how hard it is to be a mechanic and run a shop. Making videos is just another job on top of a job. Even with all that going on, the quality of your videos is excellent. Your channel has become one of my absolute favorites!
Legend
Thats the problem with rebuilt products. You get a lifetime warranty but end up changing them out every two years. Im too old for that. New stuff for me.
nonayou damnbusiness I ended up getting a Mitsu unit :)
Another great diagnostic video! Didn't no where you were going when you start telling about a HOT woman. Remember your wife is armed ;)
***** And a good shot :)
Why are main dealer parts so expensive ? Surely in the interest of good customer relations with an eye to future purchases, the price tag should be reasonable.
Tom OConnor Makes ya wonder huh
Hum - first you have a "HOT" lady that owns the car , then you have a Lady inside the car turning the AC , on-off and now your going to make a call to her and recommend the best solution for another great vid for part 2. Ok Eric just one question , when you make the call is the lady going to answer the phone and say "SOUTH MAIN AUTO" - "HOW MAY I HELP YOU" 👍
Steve Rob Naw that lady drives a Honda Odyssey. She also changes her own tires.
Upallnight Plus her oil, filter, balances her own wheels and makes lunch. A heck of a woman I tell you!
Rick Anderson Guys stop creeping on Vanessa...
Steve Rob Uh oh we are busted ... she is reading this, annnnnnndddd she was not the girl in the car.... Thanks Steve, realllll nice....
Have you ever screwed up that screwdriver(pun unintended) clutch method and launched it across the garage? We could make a reality show out of that one.
Bruce Ismond I've gotten a pretty good poke in the palm doing that but never launched it yet... yet....
South Main Auto Repair hahaha, I broke someone's plastic fan doing that. Good thing it wasn't a metal fan.
Now Eric, get back to work....
jarin wilson Haha 6 cans of sealer later.... Customer: "Well we did all we could, time to go to the shop and ruin their A/C machine"
South Main Auto Repair that garbage should be illegal to be honest.
jarin wilson Your telling me. You should see what it does to a manifold on an A/C machine.
WooW Good Job ;) You Rock Man
I have 2011 outlander 2.4l AWD . I am about to be mechanic because of the problems of this vehicle.
Dude, you're breaking my heart. It's going to be 112F here today. What a cry baby.

My car had the ac problem....basically the compressor wasnot engaging...after some tests we found that the has escaped and so the ecu wasnot turning on the comressor irrewpective of switch position...we found the leak...it was the low pressure pin that was leaking...it was a dollar ...finaly we refilled the gas and everything wqs fine
mitsubishi outlander 2004.memory on the dasfboard
AC seasons haa... better get a denso compressor cheap and high quality. OR a junkyard one but its risky
He lives 5 miles away and I only see him a handful of times per year.
that questions for Eric O
84? Get your butt to San Antonio - see how that sits with you...
