    I'm not too sure if you'll see this but I wanted to post this.
    I just wanted to take a quick second to thank you for posting all of these videos. I'm currently a 2nd year apprentice up here in good old Canada and I'm glad I found your TH-cam channel. The amount of knowledge and insight I've gained from watching your videos has been amazing. My grandfather worked as a mechanic for over 40 years and while I've learned a lot from him, the industry and cars he worked on during his career were vastly different compared to today's modern vehicles and technology.
    I love how detailed all of these videos are from diagnosis all the way to repairing the fault. So thank you again for posting these videos. You've gained a long term fan! I would die to work under some body like you!
    Thanks,
    Alex

      zlALEXlo Hey Alex glad it is a help to you and that you enjoy them. Kinda funny the apprentice that works with me now is a Canadian and it was his dream to work with me lol. Well keep your head on straight pay attention to your work and do your best! Just member a little common sense goes a long way in this business. Good luck in your adventure.

    I don't do many AC systems, but when I do I always stress over how much PAG oil to put in, especially if there was a leak and you really don't know how much came out before you started. I tend to follow the guide for each component in my factory service manual. For that compressor I was thinking the only way to really know how much is in it at any time would be to totally empty it like you did the old compressor. Once it was empty you could replace the amount that came out of the old compressor plus a little more to replace the drips and spills you didn't get to measure. I was relieved to see that even a pro mechanic like yourself stresses over this, so now I don't feel as bad when I stress over it.

      I agree. If there was a leak in the system I add a hair less than the factory spec after draining the new compressor. If there weren't any leaks then I put in what came out of the old compressor.

    Whenever I do an AC system repair and if the compressor had suffered the black death I would flush out the system and put back in the total amount of oil for the system, since flushing the entire system will normally remove all the oil in the system.

    I find your approach to adding oil interesting. I have never drained and measured what was in the old compressor. I also don't recall ever getting a new compressor without oil being in it. I generally add one ounce of oil to the system when I change a component and two ounces when there is explosive decompression such as a collision or burst hose. I have never had an issue doing it that way.

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      eldoradony Oh no kidding, see in this case it would have had twice the required amount in the system if I just put it on the way it was.

    Eric- you're right to err on the side of too much oil. I've heard the doom and gloom of too much oil but never had a problem. I have seen compressors shred that IMO had too little oil.

    Awesome video. I just worked on a 04 toyota rav4. Bad battery damaged the fuel system. Relay box was damaged, old fuel pump fried. The complain was the car stalled out after getting fuel.owner tried jumping the car but nothing .My initial diagnosis was originally the fuelpump. Put a new one in and nothing. Started digging with the electronics, Had power going to the pump harness but it was only at 11.70v, to low. After my bro helped me out with the electrics we managed to get somewhat of a result. The new pump started to cycle after you turned the key off. Epic LOL. All the relay were showing 170 ohms of resistance. Pulled the entire relay box off to look underneath and it was clean. Put the box back on and the car was a bit less hesitant to start but still nothing. Our conclusion, the bad battery damaged damaged either the fuse box or ecu causing a voltage drop. The car needs to go to the dealership were my bro works to determine how bad the damage really is. I was doing this job outside. Conclusion......... DO NOT IGNORE YOUR BATTERY!!

    Great videos Eric. You've made me a loyal fan of your work. Keep it up. Wouldn't it been a good idea to replace the fixed orifice tube since you have the system open? Maybe the compressor was a burn-out. It just good insurance to protect the new compressor.

    I have always removed the PAG that in new or rebuilt compressors. As I have no clue if or how long it was exposed to outside air.
    My factory guru AC guy says, what come out. Should be put back in. And to never over fill any AC with PAG oil. It will flood the compressor and can lock it up or blow seals.

    In my DIY experience, I have had little success w/ measuring drainage (practically zero drainage) from compressor. When a leak is present allowing, much of the lubricant is likely pulled out w/ the leak. In that case, I add system total spec amount before closing. I have had no adverse effects from slighlty too much lubricant.

    Hi Eric Good video.and really I do think Sheba does have the best Job and gets scratched as well (LOL).
    One question regarding the oil, I understood the compressor stated 70cc as capacity shipped with 80cc. why would you not just remove 10cc as the shipping overage and leave it full? A 2nd question I know the oil is carried throughout the system during operation but my understanding is that most of the oil stays in the compressor resivoir and will settle out when system not running. If there was only 10cc left in the system would that not indicate that system failure could have been caused by too little oil remaining?
    I am a new subscriber so am enjoying catching up on your videos keep up the good work.
    Tintown.

    thinking about buying an ac service machine like yours, are there any special precautions when dealing with a system that may have stop leak in it ?

    • @SouthMainAuto
      @SouthMainAuto  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      101numlock You can buy what they call an AC Guard that goes right on your hoses on the ac machine to protect it.

    I think they meant there's 80cc of oil in the compressor. Subtract what you drain out of the old compressor 70cc. So 80-70 =10cc. Drain 10cc out of new compressor so now got same amount as the old one.

    seems like ac compressor issues are common with mitsubishis. had a 2004 lancer that had the similar issue once it hit around 90k got the part and swapped it. i have a 2011 versa with 110k and want to buy a 2008 outlander with 100k miles on it but idk man i hear they get great mpg, drive ok in the snow. im a student and go to school in NH, i drive 20-25k a year. what do u think should i get the outlander or stick w the versa
    thanks
