Materials: Can be made in any yarn with appropriate needles but I used a large skein of Bernat Softee Chunkee in Grey Ragg, and size 11/8.0mm needles. amzn.to/3FaKJY7 (amazon link)
Pattern: Cast on any odd number of stitches - more for a wider scarf, fewer for a more narrow one. For the sample scarf I used 21.
Knit 5 rows for garter st border.
Row 1: K3, p1, *k1b, p1. Rep from * until 3 sts remain, k3.
Row 2: K3, k1b, *p1, k1b. Rep from * until 3 sts remain, k3.
Repeat Rows 1- 2 for pattern until desired length, you are near to running out of yarn, or you are bored :-)

This is a very wonderful and easy pattern! Thank you for sharing! And I understand why you would hesitate to say that the there is a right side row and wrong side row, since both sides are the same row pattern, but for me personally, I distinguish between the right side and wrong side rows, as when the tail is at the front of the project, I call it the right side, and when the tail is on the back of the project, I call it the wrong side. But I understand what you're saying, and again, I thank you very much for sharing! It's a beautiful scarf, and I love knitting!

I'm a _longtime_ beginner to knitting LOL. I put it down for so long in between projects, that I have to watch videos to remember. My son requested a larger scarf for our Canadian winters. This is something new & different. Thank you for this neat little pattern. I'm working it now 🤗🥂
I am making this this with a super bulky yarn that I've had for years. I started out with 19 stitches across bur it was too wide for a teenage boy's scarf so I went down to 13 stitches across. PERFECT. And it's just wonderful!!! It makes so fast and it's amazingly warm. So thick and soft. The pattern is so easy too!!! I will be making one of these for lots of other folks..me next! And I'm going to make the hat for me too. THANKS SO MUCH. I can't remember when I've been so pleased with a knitting project. Oh, land the border is perfect!

I’m in the middle of making the scarf and I love it. I actually now have a pattern, that is absolutely gorgeous, well installed in my brain so that I could pick up a ball of yarn and a set of needles and knit something without a written pattern. This is so well explained, thank you. I made a hat in the round using this stitch, it worked out great. I did a regular knit 1, purl 1 for 2 inches, then started the fisherman’ rib. I cast on an even number of stitches, and worked a repeat of 2 rows. First row I worked: knit 1, then a purl 1 below. The second round: knit 1 below, then purl 1. It’s a little harder because you need to remember which row you are on. I had to learn how to correct mistakes. The pattern makes the project so fluffy and warm, I love it and now want to find out how to make a hood with a scarf attached for the very cold days. Sorry, now I just noticed you have a video for a hat and I will subscribe for your channel. Thanks a bunch😊

Thank you for this easy to follow. It’ll be my first pattern. I’m always a little confused by the number of stitches. While the needle size recommended on my yarn (a nice Icelandic wool) is the same as you’re using yours looks chunkier so I’m worried it’ll be too narrow. Perhaps I’ll practice for a while to make sure I’ve got it down then redo for 25? Thanks again for the super clear instructions!

You can do it! And you can always run a lifeline when you have some of it done that you are happy with just in case you have to rip back. By running a lifeline a mean taking a strand of a different color of yarn and running in through a row of stitches you are sure is correct. If you have to rip back, the lifeline will prevent you from ripping too far.
Loved this video! I had to restart once because i wasn't paying attention! If i would have been paying attention to the stitch placement i wouldn't of had to restart. Oops.

Great pattern. The six K knit rows at the end, is it six rows plus the cast off row, or is the cast off row the sixth row? Thank you.
Love the video. Especially teaching on how to identify stitch yr working. Curious why it starts with Knit 5 rows and then ends by knitting 6 rows?
When one uses a long tail cast-on, as I usually do, the cast on row counts as a knit row. So cast-on + 5 rows = 6 rows, 6 rows at the end to match. Sometimes I will also add or subtract a row at the end when changing from a pattern stitch to a border to keep RS/WS consistent. Thanks for watching!

The first row I have to cast on? I have bulky polyacryl wool .
I have difficulties knitting down the stitch below since it is very tight.
Wool is for 8 needle.
I have no idea what pearl 1 means it would be great if u could zoom in to the stitch for a super starter who finished her first scarf :)

I too want to make a blanket. In your video you said to use an odd number of cast ons but in the comments you said to use an even number. Did I not understand that correctly? Is it different if you are increasing the size of the item?

There is not but that’s a really good idea! I have extended family camping out in my studio for quarantine but let me see if I can kick them out for a little bit :-)

Depends on the weight of the yarn? Worsted or bigger, yes! Fingering or sport or DK that may not be enough.
Hi, if I'm starting with a P1 but ending with a K1below before the 3 knit stitches, will that throw off the pattern/ would it be better if I did 2 P1 stitches at the end instead of ending with the K1below?
It should not throw off the pattern it just won’t be exactly symmetrical and no one will ever notice that :-)

I would lean more towards 15, simply because the fabric tends to draw in in width a little bit.

Yes the stitch works fine in DK - it will either be more narrow, or you could add some stitches to the cast on.
I've been knitting for 3 years, and I think this is the first time I've used a garter stitch since I first learned to knit. I always use stockinette. Unfortunately I haven't been working on one sitting, and I lost count of my rows. With the garter stitch being the same on both sides, how do I tell the right from the wrong side?? I'm doing a border of 5 instead of 3 like you did, but I still don't know how to tell if I've done one complete forward and backwards pass or not
If you have some pattern established, which it sounds like you do, knit your 5 stitches for your border then look closely at the next stitch on the left-hand needle. If it looks like a purl bump you start with a purl, if you have an enlarged stitch that looks like the right side of stockinette you would start with a K1b.

Straight needles work fine! I use circulars for pretty much everything, and I find they fit better on camera, but you don't have to use them if you don't like them.
Can you alternate the rib stitch with regular stitches to make a pattern?
You would have to test it out. I expect the gauge would be different which might make the sides not be straight. Although that could be a design element!
