Holy moly Marley Bird! It’s knitception! This is exactly what I want in a knitting video; not just throwing me a pattern(or 3), but helping me understand the method❣️
i luv the k1 p1 method. I don't get lost in the pattern. The emerging fabric is lovely and plush :-) You are a good instructor. Thank you for doing this video.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've been looking at a few methods, but they all seem to do everything differently. This made it so much easier to understand!
Thank you very much for your tutorial. Like Dorothy Rockwell (cf. her 'Comment' from 3 months ago, reproduced at the end of my comments), I learned to work this stitch an other way, i.e. with K1, K1B without any purl stitches at all. I learned it as a child, many years ago. We called it 'maille anglaise' - 'English stitch'; also called 'côte anglaise'. I prefer it because it is so simple, it is easy to 'read' and it prevents mistakes. When working flat, beginners might find the pattern easier to 'read' when knitting with an even number of stitches. Knitting it in the round is just as simple: just work the pattern on an uneven number of stitches. Increases and decreases in 'maille anglaise' are also possible, just as they are most likely possible in the 3 ways described in your video and they are in Brioche stitch. Have a good day and take care. Dorothy Rockwell il y a 3 mois I knit swatches using all three of the methods you have demonstrated and found them to be very similarl. Then I found a tutorial which is all knit stitches. The set up row is all K and the pattern repeat row is K1, K1B with no purling at all using the same pattern on both sides. It could not be easier. I knit a swatch using that method and found it mostly identical to the three you are showing. Can you do another tutorial with the all Knit version.
Great video, I gave up on Brioche after many hours of attempts to master the stitch. I am not grasping the transition from BP to Bk....another time perhaps...So Fisherman's knit is my go to to finish my sweater . Thank you so much for this great video!
I can read patterns, but seeing it done by someone just takes the mystery out if doing it correctly. I’m going to try the entrelac pattern again. Never could get bast the second row. 😱.
Thanks so much for this! I have been looking for a video that shows the close up of what the stitches will look and couldn't find anyone that actually showed it. The "double collar" description helps a ton! Thank you!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for this clear explanation, Marly!!! Why didn't I think of it before? I like purling, but being able to do this with just knitting is so much easier. My current project is worked flat and started with a K1,P1 border so I have abandoned the purls altogether and have good results from K1B, K1 on one row then K1, K1B on the next (knitting below into the K columns as they appear). I also find it just a little bit easier to knit below under the purl bump from the previous row.
Ditto to what Aimii said...I have seen instructions on different ways to do the “easy brioche” or “short-cut brioche” but it’s so nice to have them all explained in one place! As usual...you rock, Marly!
Thank you. I was trying to decide which one I should do for a short video but didn't want anybody to watch it and say, "that isn't how so and so does it". Therefore, I decided I would just show all three and go from there. I personally like the last one the best but that is me.
Another Fisherman's Rib pattern I learned was K1below, P1below for every row. It could be worked on 1x1 or 1x1+1 rib. It makes a VERY thick and cushy fabric, but it eats a lot of yarn.

I have just added a comment (20 February 2022). I too learned the K1, K1B way and it is the one that my sisters, my friends and I have always used. I added a few details about it in my comment. I hope that you will not be offended, as I added your comment as a reference at the end of mine. It was yours that inspired me to add mine. Take care and have a good day.
Hi Marly, your videos are great and you explain it to well. Thank you. I would like to make a neckwarmer with this stich and work in the round with circular needles. Which row do I repeat?
Thanks. Yes you are very clear in your instructions. Also your work looks so neat. My knit columns are all loose and weird. The stitches look like a chain of circular loops instead of braids. Do you have any advice please?
I really like the "KNIT" version of the Fisherman's Rib. Can you please provide me with a link or information on how to increase stitches using the knit version? Many thanks in advance.
This is great. I’m hoping you can answer a question. I’m struggling with a pattern of fisherman’s rib. I was knitting flat using the k1b, p method. I then have to close to round. When I do, the pattern of ribbing ends up reversed from what’s knit below it (flat). I can’t figure out how to get the pattern to fall on the correct side.
You are an amazing teacher and I appreciate the time you take to explain what is occurring in the fabric as you knit. I learned the salvage stitch by watching your other work. My question is that how do you join new yarn with that salvage stitch. Maybe I am overthinking the process. I would appreciate any ideas you can share. Thanks for all your hard work.
brilliant! can you please show us how to do the left and right slanted decreases on the k1p1 version? i started a jumper without pattern and all the instructions i can find on the net are either for brioche stitch or the other 2 versions you demonstrate :(
I am OBSESSED with fisherman's rib! I love making hats with this stitch, so I am working in the round. Do you have suggestions for finishing off the crown in this type of hat? I have been switching to plain K1 P1 rbbing, but I'm not really satisfied with it. Thanks!
@@juliehull3953 Unfortunately, no. It is very difficult to correct mistakes in fisherman's rib. I think I am going to start putting in a lifeline every few rows.

I just learned how to do the fisherman's rib stitch but it's all knit so all have purl bumps on top but you knit or knit below and it's the same thing. No purling involved except in the set up row.
Thank you for this explanation but I'm still wondering where the difference is to brioche in the fabric? It looks the same, maybe a bit less "fluffy". Doesn't the k1b have the same effect as slip one with yarn over and knitting it in the next row?

The knit version you do is not correct. In the knit version you do the second row as you do and then all other rows are knit only! Only the second row is knit one below and purl one. All next rows is knit one below, knit one. You knit one in the row where the last stitch has a double loop. No purling needed after the second row. That's why it's called the knit version.
