I’m always shocked when people get rid of original windows that last for over 100 years for plastic windows that last 30 years at best. I just restored some windows that are 173 years old and in amazing shape and beautiful as well.

First apply silicone to the sill so water doesn’t come back underneath from strong rains/snow & the window needs to be centered/squared using shims so it doesn’t bow outwards so it can be tightened securely not left snugged also by doing so you can apply light expanding window foam all around it and Caulk the outside all around the window but not the inside so the foam can breath the trim will hide the foam. 👍🏻

Good info here , but the gap between the new window frame and the existing old window jamb must be insulated or at least caulked if you don’t want air leaks. The outside needs caulking as well.

On an old house you should Never put in Vinyl window in place of original old windows... Why ? Because the house wants to breathe with the wooden frames.. When you use vinyl windows the house wants separate from the plastic vinyl...I suggest you check out how to prepare old windows or put in wooden frame windows.... Remember to talk to someone who wants to keep their historical house more original so you are not using vinyl windows.

That's a good video for DIY. As an eighteen year installer, there is a much easier way to remove those windows besides removing the interior trim ( which is usually really old and brittle.) You can use a what some call a drywall hammer that has the axe edge on one side and a regular framing hammer. You can literally chop out the outer stops and remove the window from the outside. That way less mess in customer homes. The interior trim then becomes your stops and windows will line up exactly the same as your method. But yes, very good job sir!

Why did a contractor tell me that i would have to take off my moulding trim around my window and the sill at the bottom wouldnt be there anymore, then he said it would be $65 more in labor to stain n install new trim around the window! And my storm on the outside would be gone and also the outside trim! I see you left all the inside trim there, didnt even take it off!

Installers left SUCH big gaps everywhere, by not using 2X4's, when the new windows are so much smaller, you can frame them with 2X4's but they used 1X1, and filled the rest in with gobs of silicone-like an entire INCH of silicone. Honestly, I think the company went cheap. It looks horrible on the outside. Yes, they need to be trimmed still, but such big gaps have me nervous, and I always thought they're supposed to be set IN-these are not even flush with the original siding. To trim them, the whole trim has to be sicking OUT from the original aluminum siding-a horrendous look. Not only that, but they left in the original slanted aluminum-wrapped sill/jambs on the bottom and filled the gap in with caulk. I thought they're supposed to leave the outside framing ALONE....

How do we measure window sizes properly before buying them, and what should we be careful with so i don’t end up ordering twice.

Hi Hugo. Thank you for the video it was great. I have a question though. Long story short I am a DIYer. Pretty solid skills. I have windows on my home exactly like the ones in your video and my question is do you, or CAN a person waterproof the sill and/or underneath the exterior trim when replacing a window? I watch a lot of videos on TH-cam where there is no siding on the house and therefore people use stretch tape or flashing tape but does a person do this when siding is already on the house? Thank you for any feedback!

First video I found that includes installation of the seal angle and head expander. Thanks for covering those apparently obscure items.

I'm having 10 windows replaced in my house in a couple of months or so and I wanted to see the steps of this process before the installers come. I can't believe it's this easy to do. One note that I took from this video is making sure the installers score the paint from the trim before they remove it. I saw another TH-cam video in which this wasn't done and what a zig zag paint cracking disaster that was. Hugo shows how to do this and the rest of the process right.

Spray foam insulation between the frame of the windows and the wall is always a great option. You dont need a spray gun these days either pretty neat
