@@krazzygranny7032 My house was built in 1947, not really considered that old, but it was built with very low ceilings. It's a small cape style with 6'7" ceilings. The problem with such a low ceiling, especially this particular house, is that who ever installed the windows and the two exterior doors didn't have room to install the top molding, interior & exterior, to the width of the side moldings. The exterior windows on the front and back have a top molding that is less than a 1/4 of the width of the side moldings. The top of the windows go right up to the roof line. I can almost clean out the gutters on the front of the house without using a ladder. Of course the interior top molding is the same. It just doesn't look good. I bought the house from a contractor who bought it as a flip and didn't go out of his way to make thw windows or doors more appealing. Instead of spending the extra money replace the windows the right way so they would not only look good but be efficient he replaced them with what ever he could find, the cheaper the better. What I want to do is replace them with a window that is smaller in height so the same width molding can be used on the sides and top with a inch or two space between the top of the molding and ceiling. On the exterior I would actually like to just see the same size molding. I'm sure some work would be required to accommodate a smaller window, adding to the top of the open frame like a 2x4 would allow for a smaller window ( in height) . Before I can do this are there building code issues I need to look into first? The windows now look like crap because they look to be too big for the house. Before looking at new windows should I contact my town hall and check with current building codes or can I just install windows that aren't as tall as the ones on the house now?

I recently found your channel and found this video to be very helpful, especially for those who wished to replace their windows. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
They always make it look so easy. If I tried to do this, it would take me an entire day to get a single window installed... and that’s if I’m lucky enough to have it actually fit in the opening properly. In any case, I would most certainly pay five times as much when I have to hire a professional to come out and fix the leaking, crooked window that I just botched.
Just remember that sometimes contractors can screw stuff up just as bad as a home owner. I had a trim carpenter leave 1/4” gaps all over my house. I told him “I could’ve screwed this up just as good for free!” What you want to do is make sure you call a GOOD contractor

Question for a pro (or a geometer): @7:40, when Tom checks for square, the measurements are 57 5/8 on the first diagonal, and 57 3/4 on the second diagonal. He has the homeowner move nudge the window over 1/8, but wouldn't that just swap the imbalance to the other diagonal? Why wouldn't he have her nudge it over by 1/16?
You’d actually have to recheck the other side as likely one side was out, the other is too. It’s how it works with square boxes. Overall, I think this step was done to show DYIers how to check for square and how to adjust to fix it.
I have a question. The bottom of the new window is flat without a slope but the sill has a slope. so there should be some space between the window ans sill. Is this normal?
This answered so many questions to be able to see it start to finish. I think it would be helpful to talk about when to use spray foam around the edges, I guess that wouldn't necessarily apply here because the spacing was so small? Thanks!
I never saw my window installer measure that many times to ensure it is squared. Ten years later, a couple of my windows now had a hard time closing down when it is opened :(. I got a bad installer.

Great video with a lot of information for DIY people. Would you like to make a video (or direct if already have one) to show how to remove a vinyl and aluminum frame window which was installed when the house was built with nailing flange outside with an exterior vinyl siding and install a new energy efficient window?
Me too! I mean, crazy prices for only half of my windows! They wouldn't let me see a sample of what the window was on the quote at Lowes and I am guess it was junk.

I draw a simple rectangle on paper and the put all the measurements next to the drawing: 3 horizontal, top, middle, bottom and the same for the vertical: left side, center and right side top to bottom. Use exact measurements(rough opening) and the window company will usually reduce those sizes by a 1/2''- 3/8'' to give you room for adjustment. The window you get will be a replacement window, not a "new construction" which have the nailing flanges. Hope this helps.
I see an Andersen logo on the window sticker. What series window is this and what would I ask for if I wanted to order this type of window? Vinyl wrapped composite with paintable or stainable wood on the inside? Thanks!
It may be long past time to ask a question, but I seriously need to know what those type replacement windows with the bevel on the bottom are called, who makes them and where it is you ordered them. That is exactly what I need and I can't find them anywhere.
He goes to the trouble of explaining about the argon at 2:41 and then, betraying she has no idea what he was talking about, happily added “No more drafts!” to which he agreeably assented lol
I realize this is an old post, just seeing if any answers out there, i have the same windows and want to replace, I see when he measures the left side to the top, he measure the inside sill to the top of window, its 49 3/4, but when he measures on the right to the top his measure from the top of the stoop instead, so wondering which is correct. thx
Thanks but when ordering is that your true measurement for the new replacement window or is it the rough opening measurement? I believe the rough opening measurement will be 1/8 " less in with and 1/2 " in height. Thanks for the reply
they didn't take it down to the rough opening, but set it in the old frame already in place. In other words it's an insert replacement window rather than a full-frame window installation.
qwerty12345 The salesperson should know and care enough to ask you if you need a sill adaptor. It can be purchased with the window order from the manufacturer. The sill adaptor is put on the bottom of the new window and is designed to take up the space of the sloped gap.
When its 12° outside, there is cold air between his blind stop caulking and the interior caulking. No insulation which is cheap and doesn't hurt to add. Also he may be square but is it level. You can have an unlevel square.
This Hold House, why did you not use commercial grade foam to fill in the gap and only caulk? I want to replace my windows but one installer does not use foam but fiberglass insulation while others use foam. I am a little hesitant in installing windows without foam. Is my hesitation a correct concern?
I spend under $200 for a good vinyl window that size. Paint the outside to match the trim. No customization. Order stock and fir out an inch or 2. Would I rather have her window? Yes. But to do my whole house in those it would have been an extra $10,000. My windows will be less maintenance as well.
Mark Kavit But easy to replace again once you have the right sizes, etc. And name brands help you sell the house if that’s what your goal is (ours, too). Thermostars from Pella are in the $150 range, stick to std sizes, yes for sure not the worlds best, but the name is familiar & golden to most semi literate agents & homebuyers. In 10 years, install new, latest and greatest, you & the new homeowner still saved a bundle over renewal by Andersen etc; Did anyone realize that consumer reports loves Thermostar? A copy of their review page will be in the home when it’s being shown. It turned out that all the custom built wood windows, single pane, in our house, matched up exactly to standard in stock sizes at Lowe’s. Ka ching for us.
Did they have to remove the storm windows to install the new ones? Or was she just removing them in general? I want to keep mine because they’re so handy.
I’m getting two new windows upstairs in the next two weeks & wanted to make sure I’m getting the same sized window cause they are custom. I am hoping the new ones will keep out smells and noise from outside.

Measuring from stool to top of window, what was your the stopping point for the measurement?
Do you have to remove the moulding on the inside of the house around the windows?
So is that rough or actual? I'm trying to order windows
Where do you get replacement windows that fit the sloped sill? Lowes said they don't make them.
qwerty12345 The salesperson should know and care enough to ask you if you need a sill adaptor. It can be purchased with the window order from the manufacturer. The sill adaptor is put on the bottom of the new window and is designed to take up the space of the sloped gap.
Can you measure everything after it’s removed? Like if I or the person I bought the house from has removed it already
When its 12° outside, there is cold air between his blind stop caulking and the interior caulking. No insulation which is cheap and doesn't hurt to add. Also he may be square but is it level. You can have an unlevel square.
I can sum this video up in 1 word and that’s OK.
Excellent Tom. Your expertise is invaluable. Thank you,Chuck.
My Anderson windows are 30 yrs old. Should I replace them Tom? Casement windows are expensive.
Larry Belt hope you know that vinyl will not last as long as other types.
Did anyone else get really excited when they saw the bernese mountain dog walking outside the window?
That was so staged 😂
I came here hoping to see trim casing get ripped off and a gigantic hole in the side of the house. I leave disappointed.
What about the storm window on the outside? No fly screen? Just wondering...
I've seen replacement windows installed with flashing and some without, like here. When is flashing required for a replacement window?
I’m getting two new windows upstairs in the next two weeks & wanted to make sure I’m getting the same sized window cause they are custom. I am hoping the new ones will keep out smells and noise from outside.
Tom - dont let it go beavuse those spring balances will shoot away.. a second later off the camera all you hear is her screaming LMAO... Priceless...
Hi Emily you made that look easy thank you for doing this video
This looked like so much fun!
I always use plenty of cocking when on the job site
Right......
Nice job Emily. It's great that you were able to get involved to this level. But for goodness sake, protect those beautiful eyes with safety goggles. You never know what is going to shoot, pop, spring, fall or swing into your eyes. You only get two !
I'm trying to find any videos This Old House may have made with regards to removing an existing large picture window and making it a half the size opening for a much smaller window. Are there any video tutorials on how to do that on this channel?
When I had my windows installed I went triple pain and they also added insulation all around the window.
@Hello James how are you doing
How many times did she say ok in this video? 🤔
Yep, works that well every time
Can a discolored window be replaced on an existing vinyl window. My vinyl windows were installed 20 years ago.
