Also some go there retired on SS, disability etc. So they have a steady income source but then live above their means. They get into a relationship with what is usually a poor girl. Even if she has a job, she’s making very little. She’s most likely partially supporting her parents or her child. Then that guy “falls in-love” and wants to give her everything she wants and most she also needs a lot. Probably never drove a car, owned any assets and her family probably is very poor. So his $2 to maybe 4K a month income gets spread pretty thin. BTW the MAX SS benefits is only achieved if your earnings are $160,00.00 a year. Average salary in USA is around $60K. So those retired expats are not getting the MAX SS benefits and if they’re getting disability then they’re also dealing with some disability issues that need routine medical care or they will also be getting worse.
Anyway, we have seen retired grandpa move to PHL and a SOD. (Start over dad) and seem pretty miserable with his new family that helps him but he’s definitely not “living the dream “ and enjoying the island lifestyle you see online lol.

Not everyone is made of the 'Right Stuff'. 'Early retirement' was probably a new police chief sweeping out substandard staff. Lo & behold incompetence was not just packed in Ted's suitcase when he left the country, it was in his DNA.

lump sum money doesn't even last in the United States rule number one don't ever take a lump sum from a job take a guaranteed pension for life. for you guys that get a lump sum money you can get an annuity payout from a life insurance comapany that pay you like a pension for 10 or even 15 years.

    • @gobfranklin6759

Stop with the annuities! You give up your lump some for a 10 or 15 year payout!!? Do the math, always better to do stocks and some short term bonds. Annuities are for fools but the sales person will say otherwise and always reassure using fear! Don't do it.

Philippines looks like the winner but I'm still working on finding out certain details. I've heard tons of cautionary tales like Ted's and I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did. I've heard of similar situations like burning an inheritance, selling a house (in the US) and burning that money, and blowing through a settlement from a lawsuit. It's either overspending, investing in unwise ventures, or flat out getting scammed due to naivete. Seems really simple to me: don't do that.

If you have money enough, it will only be enough if you stick to a budget.
Retirement is great with a steady income. If you have a lump sum then figure a budget. 62.5 years to start collecting SS and you’re 55 then 7.5 years until that kicks in.
Say you have $360,000 in funds then divide that up by years then divide that up by months.
360,000 / 7.5 = 48,000 a year. 48,000 / 12 = $4,000 a month and that should be plenty enough and then some. So don’t burn it up, biting through cash is easy.
If you have 150,000 then your budget has to reflect that. You’re at 20k a year like many retired people are on SS. 16,666 a month. Stay in budget no problem. Add a gf and a kid well tighten up.
You drink a lot spend extra every month and at 6 years you’re broke and can’t collect SS for another year plus you are an out of luck and in the streets.
Take care of your budget and wait you say you dumped your motorcycle and are in the hospital? Omg what are you gonna do? $10,000 in bills that’s another 6 months from your budget…..

Before coming here, you really should have a plan how to earn money and ideally it is already going to work. If not you better have a nest egg for at least a year.
Even costs are low, have at least enough for a monthly budget of 1.500$. So 20k should be a reasonable nest egg for a year.
This applies only if you are 30-40 and still have enough years to work and to save for a bigger nest egg

I am bringing over all my qualifications and certs. They all tie in to be able to make a great life out there it would be good to meet up with the right people also and not get distracted by the woman..
I can't look back once I'm there. Would it be better to find employment and to try get the work visa before arriving? Or can I make things happen easy enough when I'm there? I'm not planning on just being an employee though.

do not plan on finding employment in the PH. there aren't even enough jobs for the filipinos. and what few jobs there are pay maybe $500 at most per month. but that's assuming a company sponsors you for a work visa.
bottom-line... do not go to the PH expecting to work a job. much better you focus on how to earn income online. not from the local PH economy.

It is kind of hard to believe that a retired cop would be this irresponsible with money. It is what it is I guess....

    • @TomScott__
      @TomScott__ 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

That's true but I knew he had a thinking problem when he took a lump sum from his retirement instead of a payout monthly for the rest of his life and didn't already have that lump sum invested for living expenses.
Sometimes cops are given the option of "quit or get fired" they take quit so they can keep their reputation and pension but if they quit there is no unemployment money. If they get fired they lose their pension and reputation and a new cop job is almost impossible but they can get unemployment money for a little while if fired. So just because this guy was a cop doesn't mean he was a good thinking cop.
I should add that even if he is fired and he loses his pension, he will be given a cash out of all the money he contributed to his pension. He just doesn't get the money the employer promised to add to it. So his contributions might have been his only option when he "retired".
