  • The second offering from the Beeb, BBC TWO, launched 60 YEARS AGO TODAY, on the 20th April 1964, with the all too famous 'false start'. Since then though, it would continue to grow from strength to strength over the following decades. Debuting many iconic programmes, and being at the forefront of some major technological advances, namely the introduction of COLOUR TV to the UK!
So how was its 60th birthday celebrated? And what can we expect from BBC Two in the future...?

They actually did something! Re-aired old idents and programing plus a 60 years music special, first the original Black & White ident before The Likely Lads, then the 90s Paint before Open All Hours, then the Computer Generated 2 before Butterflies, then another 90s one Copper Sparks before Miranda, and lastly a repeat of the B&W ident before the 60 Songs: BBC Two at 60 special.
I love that they didn't JUST do the 90s 2s like usual but I do with they didn't just do two of them and repeat the first one again. They easily could've made the last two something else to cover more eras like the Personality, Window, TWO, Cube, etc. eras.
Of course like always, Northern Ireland went above and beyond. Not only did they do exactly that, also showing Personality and Window 2s, they also remade the B&W ident from scratch while network just aired it awkwardly zoomed to fill widescreen 🤣

Happy 60th BBC TWO! Growing up in the 90s and 2000s i use to love watching shows on BBC Two like Simpsons, Robot Wars, Fresh Prince Bel air Captain Scarlet Farscape, the list goes on. I know you covered them on the channel loads of times but 90s TWOs always have a place in my heart. Some of the idents did scare me a tiny bit but there some I liked too and every now and then i go back and rewatch some of idents

I can always remember the messing about at my uncles house to watch BBC2 he had a twin line set but for some season only one down lead from his attic to his lounge, so when they wanted to watch BBC1/ITV on VHF or BBC2 on UHF he had to go up unto the attic and change the aerials over. In the end it was too much bother to watch BBC2, so they never did.

The Newsnight montage of shows is probably my favourite thing so far to come from the 60th celebrations (probably in part to seeing a clip from a programme that hasn't been repeated since 2014, I'm definitely bias in that regard), it is so expertly edited and that final section where The Young Ones end credits theme played, all the clips work so rhythmically and on the beat. Props to whoever edited that sequence on Newsnight, and a Happy Birthday to BBC Two.

If you like comedy then you need to know the name Carla Lane. This lady wrote many bbc comedies including Butterflies which was set in the late 70s in Cheltenham. It was about a bored yet romantic housewife who has an affair. Among the cast is a very young Nick Lyndhurst as youngest son Adam. Carla wrote the Liver Birds early 70s comedy set in Liverpool and again in the 80s another Liverpool comedy called Bread which in one episode featured Paul and Linda McCartney. Carla wrote many comedies. I strongly recommend watching BUTTERFLIES.

Watching the live right now. While it was nice to see the old idents (So far it’s 1964 > Paint 91 > 1979 > Copper 91 > 1964) it’s still a bit disappointing to see a simple celebration. I was expecting something more like classic idents from Startup to closedown. Still it is a special weekend for us fanatics of this great pioneer. We were in Aylesford when BBC 2 launched, so we didn’t see it. When we moved back to London we brought a pour Bush TV125/U dual standard TV with us and began viewing. Fave shows were Alias Smith and Jones and Call My Bluff, Pot Black. I would sit and watch the colour test films, like Birth of a Rainbow, It’s the Tube That Makes the Colour, The Colour Receiver Installation Film. Testcard and music was entertaining too. The rotating 2 seems to have been the basis for the similar rotating 4 on the Australian ABCs 4 Corners current affairs show

It's true that there aren't that many channels that have survived for 60 years, but then again 60 years ago there were only 3 channels that had ever existed in the UK anyway so there literally couldn't be any more than 3 who have existed for that long.
Even existing 30 years as a channel is something that I think only 15 channels have done in the UK so far (feel free to correct me if I've missed anything or wrongly included anything):
BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, C4, S4C, Sky One (closed 2021), Eurosport (1), MTV, Sky News, Challenge, Discovery, Nickelodeon, Gold, QVC, Cartoon Network
In addition to that the Sky Movies and Sky Sports brands have existed for more than 30 years, but it's impossible to point at any specific current channel within each brand as being the 'same' channel throughout those brand's respective existences.

I think the biggest problem with BBC Two right now is the existence of BBC Four. Now, I am actually one of the minority of people who like BBC Four. But with limited broadcast hours and a lot of repeats, its content could easily shift over to BBC Two.

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews หลายเดือนก่อน

I agree, as much as I love BBC4, BBC2 surely could have the content instead (if it is a case of limited money). BBC 4 could be the best channel on the TV and could have tons of art shows / archive etc but it is not as good as it used to be, I am assuming it will be showing repeats of FlogIt soon enough. If Talking Pictures can run endless old black and white shows, heritage charts, footage detectives, cellar club etc why can't BBC 4 do much the same with the same energy and enthusiasm

Who drew the first Playschool house? It reminds me of the ol' crooked house in Adventure Island, Southend on Sea, the bit with the key always puzzled me as well, but it could have been worse, if I remember rightly when Auntie Beeb started, there was a bit of music and dancing, ITV was a ad break for toothpaste and Countdown was the first programme on Ch4, so not too bad. I like the story about TV going off for the war, one minute a Mickey Mouse cartoon then loads of time later, it comes back on, and they pick up right where they were, more Mickey. Nice one.

I still enjoy watching shows on BBC2 (and BBC4), more so than BBC. I love watching DW TV channel and they have numerous arts show, music shows, science shows and I would love to see the BBC have more of those than endless FlogIt, I can't believe it costs a vast amount to put shows on about say an artist such as Dave McKean talking about his art, it doesn't need to be etc flying around the world seeing various monuments or staying at expensive hotels. Also, there must be millions of comedy acts around the country or drama productions that could do with a bit of coverage on BBC2 and probably for very little money.
The 4 hour show of music was fine but I was hoping for a more coherent show such as 1964, 1965, 1966 etc instead of bouncing from the brilliant Kinks to Beyonce etc. Also, surely if Channel 5 can do a four hour show about TV in 1971 or 1972 or the 1976 Summer heatwave, the BBC could make a fascinating 4 hour archive show of all their obscure arts / dramas (and no FlogIt) for the evening of their 60th ?

Not having a modern TV , Colour and BBC2 were denied for a good few years for me. I think I have seen the first eps of Likely Lads and Butterflies a few times on repeat now, and to some extent on YT. Butterflies one of Carla Lane's series of basically being a woman (Bread and Liver Birds being effectively the other main parts of the trilogy), Didnt really like the whole point of Butterflies though , if her cooking was so bad why didnt he do a bit of if sometimes and actually help her find what she was good at, we have to accept the mismatch of teen kids to older parents as part of the tv family cliche.

Not a bad achievement for a channel whose first words heard were “stonking wigs” (not quite!).

They haven't got any money. TV is really in the doldrums now. They always marked this before.
They need to fold BBC Four into Two - that would return the channel to its old form and increase the budget from the costs saved from having Four on its own.

30 percent cuts and so much TV now available = innovation / investigation less likely now. Quantity does not = quality.

Relaying on a show that has been off the air for over 4 years now in such large numbers is never a good sign for a television channel. I mean why do we even have BBC Two at all if they are mostly going to be airing game shows, simulcasts of BBC News and repeats of shows that have been off the air for sometimes years. This isn’t a good sign for BBC 2 at all. Especially considering that BBC Two have had three or four years without a channel controller. Not good for a channel that has given us so many great, innovative and important programs over the past 60 years. These are very bad times for BBC Two. And it might not get better but we will have to wait and see.
BBC Two did give the British Morecambe and Wise in colour for the first time back in September of 1968, and the Morecambe and Wise Show would continue to air first on BBC 2 until 1971. So that’s one of the things that didn’t get mentioned. Morecambe and Wise were massively popular in the 1960s and 1970s, and seeing them in colour for the first time must of been a massive deal for the few individuals who had colour television sets at the time.

BBC NEWS annoys me. It's the dont miss the MESSAGE type news telling its insulting. Am sick of being told Charles has CANCER like he is the only person who has had CANCER don't miss the MESSAGE. There is a channel that can shutdown.

I very rarely watch BBC Two, and don't often watch BBC One either! ... I call the BBC, the "Boring Broadcasting Corporation." 🤣
I love "Doctor Who," but NOT the God-awful New Series! ... And I hate "DeadEnders!" ... I'm more of a "Coronation Street" fan!

It might not even get to 65! I personally think the BBC should be looking at closing all their TV channels except BBC1 (reverting back to BBC TV with more of a ‘BBC HD’ style schedule of programming including PSB programming) preparing the UK for a full switch to online.
Anyway Happy 60th Birthday to BBC2. What a channel you were in the 90’s!
