As always, Charlotte was spot on, saying that Russell should be called into a room and be asked what has gone wrong. But... weren't we expecting this after Chris Chibnall's first series, and most definitely his second, after the reaction to The Timeless Children? Surely, we thought, there are people in charge who are going to say something, ask questions, demand a change. But no. Along came more of the same. And then Russell rode in from a great distance on his big white horse, and we all cheered, and he galloped straight past us with nary a glance, and we ended up with mud splattered all over our faces.
The reaction to the Davros sketch, and then the reactions to The Star Beast and Wild Blue Yonder, and their ridicule on social media, must surely have been noticed. Shouldn't things have been said then, memos sent, questions asked. Was it too late to change trajectory? Might Ncuti's subsequent comments in interviews be somehow seen as damage control, telling people not to watch so that fewer people saw the episodes and their poor reception could be blamed on that poor promotion or fan and audience prejudices?
The handling of this show from 2018 onwards has been beyond bonkers, and it's gotten worse. Isn't Julie Gardner based in Los Angeles, while Jane Tranter is in Cardiff? Does the right hand not know what the left hand is doing?
Right now, the best that I can imagine might happen is that edits and, where affordable, reshoots take place to improve Season Two as much as possible, then Ncuti is let go, and Russell as well. Then Bad Wolf need to have a good think, assessing the data that they must surely have gleaned from the many TH-cam shows that have been covering these episodes. We the fans know what works and what doesn't work; we're providing free market reseach. They just have to look and take notes.
Maybe in three or five years they might attempt a relaunch, with a new showrunner and a new Doctor. Perhaps the most difficult decision is in what they're going to call it. Series One B?
I think one of the mistakes has been in thinking that Doctor Who can be HUGE. If it did that, it could only be huge for a while, and then people will get bored of it, before moving onto the next thing. Better that it stays fairly small, loved by a dedicated core audience, providing a smaller income but a steadier stream of entertainment for a longer period. Do I think that will happen? Surely some lessons will have to have been learnt from the mistakes this time around.

The best thing that could happen would be for it to be taken away from Bad Wolf, away from the little clique that has been running it for 20 years (and longer if you include the novels and Big Finish) and go with a complete new production team who are good at what they do and are NOT fans.

    • @robalexander8065

Spot on Crimpleen! At the very least series 15 needs course correction. If Ncuti gets to record a third series, to which he is apparently contracted, things need to change.
Fundamentally a non-fan Showrunner, who doesn't get carried away with rewriting the heritage and overusing CGI, would be highly desirable. At the very least someone outside the Fitzroy Tavern bubble.
The show has so much potential. It desperately needs fresh perspectives. Episodes that make you think but not overstuffed with virtue signalling. A harder edged sci-fi, a move away from contemporary Earth. more psychological horror, more varied historicals, an older Doctor in his 40s or 50s, companions from a time period other than the current year.
Get the basics right and the audience will return. As Charlotte said, word of mouth is vital. Boom may just improve on the 7 day ratings of the opening double bill IF enough people have talked about it. Arguably the first "decent" Who since 2017.We shall see!

Intrigued by the next episode. It has enormous potential. The fact it is at least attempting to live up to the Bob Holmes maxim "scare the little buggers to death" is a huge step in the right direction. Dan I admire your optimism mate. I have to admit mine is fading a bit. I am looking forward to 73 Yards. Being a Welsh born Aussie, the Welsh mythology intrigues me.
"Boom" is not the instant classic we hoped for, but it's quite good with a Doctor making performance by Ncuti Gatwa. Showing the depth and range that we hoped would surface. Unfortunately for me he is not the Doctor I need. However I am being entertained by this current series, so that's enough for me.
I know in these days of streaming they say overnights aren't vital. However it tells me the general public don't care and many fans have jumped ship. The true believers would have already watched on iView or Disney+. Where are the "New Fans" this series is aimed at ?
They were going to save the show? "2 or 3 more would replace every viewer that left". I've said it before by claiming to be "inclusive" this series has excluded its core fan base who listened and went off to "touch grass".

If I bought a kettle and it was faulty, I'd check that I'd kept the receipt and take it back for a replacement or a refund.

While it would be a lovely story if Jon Pertwee's own son brought his character back to screen, I would be nervy on it actually being a success like you guys said. I'd argue that being 4th/5th on Disney around that point is absolutely incredible at face value, but the thing is that was the premiere and of course due to the large platform and it being outside of UK there will be a large amount of people coming to Doctor Who for first time, and it is the very beginning of that journey, a huge opportunity for the show. So you could reverse that and say its scary how high it was on the list as do we really want Space Babies and Jinx Monsoon to be all these peoples first ever experience of the show. I think the really important stuff will be the stats of Disney+ going forward, as to see its audience retention, but I defo fear for it😬
All episodes thus far I have been somewhat put off or unconfident on based of the details we know about them before we get to the episode. The first two episodes for obvious reasons but even Boom due to the fact I wasn't keen on it as we ultimately know The Doctor and Ruby will be ok so having them stood around a landmine for whole episode always had its limitations. This is the first one which on paper has the potential of being a very good episode, and boy does this show need one of them lol. Fingers crossed.

    @joshuajoshua2732 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Great show guys as always.
I hate to say this and I don't say this lightly but I thought "Boom" was one of the worst Dr. Who episodes ever since "Love & Monsters", "Fear Her", "In the Forest of the Night", "Sleep No Bore" and "Space Babies" the Doctor stands on a landmine like we haven't seen that before, there were no villains, no one was killed except for those two guys at the beginning but to be brought back as holograms, they stand around talking crap through most of the episode when they could had solved the solution I thought Harry did a better job with the landmining than Ruby handling the situation, she gets shot then fatally injured then magically all of a sudden she gets better by the end of the adventure, the child was annoying I was just bored throughout and why is religion always used it seems to be an ongoing thing with Moffat and RTD they could had been just a space military force they didn't have to be Anglicans it was a typical Moffat episode both him and RTD need to retire with grace and let fresh talent in I'm sorry to sound negative but that's how I felt about the episode.
I hated seeing the Doctor cry as well that is so out of his character though granted it was a great performance from Ncuti but the writers need to stop humanising the Doctor.
I would rather rewatch the Jodie Whittaker episodes or "The Devil's Chord" than rewatch "Boom" again.
Sean Pertwee would make an amazing future different incarnation of the Doctor but I wouldn't want to see him play his dad I'd rather they leave that with Jon Pertwee he is the Third Doctor no one else so I'm hoping those rumours aren't true.
I'm not so much looking forward to the next episode "73 Yards" because I know that's going to be a Doctor lite episode and I'm not the hugest fan of them i prefer to have the Doctor in every episode but I do look forward from episode 5 onwards as we know little about those.
I do wish they would drop the "next time" trailers though I'd like to go into the new episodes with a surprise which RTD can't seem to manage.

@@type40doctorwho I think the only way to save Doctor Who is by going back to its origins. David Bradley is a brilliant actor and played the part of William Hartnell and the First Doctor with honesty. I suspect that globally and with the British fans the way it’s going Doctor Who is finished when Ncuti Gatwa leaves, whether that’s two or three seasons. If the BBC made a Spin-off of the First Doctor of quality, this could be a winner with the fans and audiences of good sci-fi dramas. Many thanks for this typically discerning, insightful and enjoyable debate, Dan and all.
Achieving originality in crafting compelling tales about a sixty year old show is something to be cherished; hence, I can't wait for Will's second audio...or his third or fourth etc, for that matter.
I have no objection to the superb Sean Pertwee having a role in the show, but every objection to him reprising that of his father's, finding all of your concerns to be regrettably relevant and appropriate.
I was hugely impressed by the world conceived by Moffat in 'Boom', together with its characters and their rogue technology. If there must be a spinoff in tandem with the main show, let its purpose be the writer's further development and exploration of these elements.
'Boom' was an excellent example of Doctor Who and indeed, television generally and, if for this era it proves to be a flash in the pan, will be one that continues to shine on each successive viewing. One of the many things that greatly impressed me about the episode was an admirably worthwhile exploration of faith, religion and scepticism, presented in a balanced fashion, with faith and religion being allowed to give a highly creditable account of themselves.
For no good reason, too many bridges have been burnt by Gatwa, and I'll never be forgiving or fond of him. Nevertheless, regarding his performance in 'Boom', and likely due to Moffat bringing the best out of him, I saw a genuine, earnest effort and, against all prior expectations, enough gravitas, eccentricity and originality, to convince me that standing on that landmine, was a gradually emerging version of the Doctor.
All of your good advice to Davies about the undoubted benefit of giving fans an unreserved apology would surely be taken by someone having the minimum of contrition, good sense and self awareness; therein, of course, lies the problem. Whether Tranter and Gardner etc are in fear or thrall of him, the time has undeniably come to subject his every decision regarding the show to the utmost scrutiny and accountability.
Davies' and Gatwa's abuse of fandom is undoubtedly reducing ratings, the reduced ratings resulting in them lashing out to further abuse fandom; a kind of time loop and, ironically, so very Doctor Who.
Regardless of who the showrunner and leads are, an inability to retain event television status is a failure to understand what truly drives enjoyment and creates /sustains broader appeal.
When first addressing the Doctor, in 'Boom', Varada Sethu's character repeatedly demands him to: "Signal your understanding", the only time I have ever previously heard such a phrase being in the 'Pyramids of Mars', when Marcus Scarman (embodying Sutekh), spoke the very similar: "Signify your understanding." Given the abounding rumours about Sutekh's return, and Davies' tendency to foreshadow, I have no difficulty in imagining this much-loved classic villain becoming eligible for some 'DEI' in the none too distant future, possibly embodied by a character played by Sethu.
I do not, under any circumstances, want to be right about this.
Thanks again, guys and all the best for now.
    Paul

Rumour has it that RTD has been sacked from Doctor Who because of the tanking ratings, but it will be announced that he's leaving voluntarily.
No wonder, when the Ncuti Garwa says 'old white men shouldn't watch it', then squeaks racism, when viewing figures drop to the lowest in its 60 year history.
That's the trouble though when you have an egotistical show runner do most of the stories. There's no on to tell them they're shite, and to rewrite it. He even rewrote a Pat Mills classic for the 'specials'! It's like whoever added the extras to The Killing Joke animated film and ruined it.

I can't get over how badly the whole thing has been handled - the preplanning. The Marketing. Davies has forgotten everything he was doing in 2004/05 and is instead pursuing his own pet causes and crusading, using the series as his platform to do it.
So 'causes' have replaced interesting visual hooks like The Slitheen, Moxx, and Cassandra. With this series it doesn't look like we are getting any of that... and neither are we getting a stable new Doctor. Instead we have a vehicle for promoting Ncuti Gatwa. It's his platform, he can wear different fashions each week, and as many are pointing out he comes over as a companion - not the Doctor.
But two series' filmed now. The next series will be more of the same. And I can only think/suspect that the BBC and Bad Wolf will want a recast and another reboot come the third series.

The music is much more complimentary to what's on screen: far more sweeping and evocative and adventurous now with Murray Gold back. The writing, whilst not back to its very best is far punchier and the ideas are more formed... SFX work is a couple of levels up again...

@@type40doctorwho I'm sorry Dan I have to disagree despite some of the writing of the Whittaker stories not being 100% the best but then again neither was the Colin Baker era and timeless child aside but it wasn't all that bad either atleast it was progressing the show was in dying need of a change there is absolutely no reason why you can't have a woman Doctor infact it should had happened along time ago it was long overdue the Doctor is a Time Lord he or she is neither a man or a woman ok Chibnall went abit far with the origins but you have to admit he's got more balls than RTD does he took risks which a showrunner should do because we had 7 years of the Moffat era which just got abit too samey by not killing off characters or making the Daleks, Cybermen, Sontarans or the Master into a joke Chibnall redeemed that and I think the music by Segun Akinola was 10 times an improvement and his theme music sounded like classic who and it was creepy Murray Gold was ok in his first few seasons but you can tell he was starting to get tired and outstaying his welcome in my opinion the Jodie era was the last era of proper serious Dr. Who I know we won't agree and that's fine that's just my opinion I like all the eras of Dr. Who to be honest but I'm struggling to enjoy the current era and bringing back RTD, Moffat, Murray Gold and giving it to Disney i think is a mistake and it's just going backwards and not progressing which is what the show should be doing it needs a brand new team and young fresh talent I'll be amazed if it makes it to the third season but if RTD keeps going on the path the way he's going the show will get cancelled he needs to get the Doctor into space more.

The main problem I had with Boom was the fact that Moffat was trying to demonize "thoughts and prayers." When the Doctor said it later on in a condescending way, that was actually disgusting. I'm a practicing Christian, and I respect other peoples beliefs and opinions. The targeting of a large population like Christendom, is a very bad move. Especially since the U.S. still has a very large Christian population, more so than any other nation. Thoughts and prayers, is a saying that tells people, you are thinking of them. Idk Dan if you saw what Moffat said, but he talked about in an interview, that he wanted "thoughts and prayers" to be viewed like how "exterminate" is viewed. He also said he wants people to give money instead of saying that. That shows how out of touch Moffat is. When a tragedy happens, money is the last thing people think about. Boom didn't sit well with me, i never liked the armed Christians, but this took it too far. Another great show Dan, I cant wait for another episode of Type 40! You guys are literally the best podcast out there. Even though Boom directly attacked me, I am not out of Doctor Who. I love it too much to stop watching. I hope 73 Yards is great. This era is 100% better than the Chibnall era, it isn't even close.
    Cheers! - Joe

I defend Moffat for a lot of things because I feel he’s unfairly targeted at times. However, I agree with this. He’s not immune to the negative influences within his bubble. In Time of Angels it was different. Ian Glenn did such a great job as Octavian. The Doctor and he sparred, Octavian got his digs in and they respected each other at the end. The papal mainframe was just bizarre. And Capaldi’s dislike of soldiers never made sense to me. Still, there were some interesting elements and Moffat’s use of these things, at least until Capaldi never seemed mean spirited. Moffat is an atheist and the concept of religion or faith can be an interesting to explore in fiction. But in todays sensitive world and Christianity being specifically targeted it must have been hard to watch.

Whilst not particularly religious, many of family are and I found it the messaging very offensive but also very inconsistent.
The attempted demonisation of Thoughts and Prayers was absolutely disgusting and the fact that Moffat was trying to equate to Exterminate was sick, quite frankly.
I thought it was not only dismissive on Moffat’s part in the interview but also incredibly callous of him.
I accept that sometimes words aren’t enough but it’s the idea that somebody might not know what to say to you in these circumstances but just want to let you know that they are thinking of you and are sympathetic to your suffering.

@@vanessalore9942sadly it seems that Moffat is not immune as you say.
I agree that The Clerics and in particular, Father Octavian was a nuanced character.
Not sure what this rubbish was. This was a disappointing effort from Moffat. He never used to write so blatantly one-sided before.
The thoughts and prayers thing was sick in my opinion. Now not only am I disappointed and disgusted with RFD, I’m now finding myself feel the same about Moffat 😒
The show needs new blood to survive. New creatives, new production team.

Honestly, I think this is largely something some sections of the fanbase and online commentators and content creators are pretty much blowing out of all proportion. I'm not even convinced it exists at all.
But it's certainly not this demonization of faith some are declaring. And I'll explain why on our review of Boom, coming in due course.

@@type40doctorwho it was there Dan, I saw it and I was thoroughly repulsed by it. Very upsetting. I gave Moffat the benefit of the doubt and my final chance. As the War Doctor so eloquently said: “No More.”
