1:16:37 For the 2018 Eurovision hosted in Portugal, the whole theme was the sea and the "All aboard" slogan is meant to be for a boat or ship (and not a train). I'm pretty sure the logo depicts a sea shell
Mandatory funfacts about Belgrade's design that will make you appreciate it more: The logo is two colors splashing into each other and converging. The year's slogan was "Confluence of sound". Belgrade, the host city, is located on the confluence of the Sava and the Danube, two big European rivers. So the logo represents both different musical genres colliding (as they do in Eurovision) AND the literal place where it's happening - Belgrade. Also, 2008's stage is vaguely, but clearly, a geographical map of Belgrade when seen from above. The middle of the stage (where they put the ice rink for Dima) is shaped like Great War Island, which is where the Sava's confluence into the Danube is located. The stage is literally the confluence of sound in every way
Rotterdam 2020's concept was every line represented a year and the colors equated to the countries' flags in their first year of appearance; Rotterdam 2021's concept was every line being one of the participating countries and the size/placement was their distance relative to Rotterdam
That’s right! In addition, the 2020 concept was deeply inspired by the 1976 and 1980 logos, to reflect that they are part of a shared story of the Netherlands hosting the Eurovision Song Contest.
@@LIN-ek5dw That would be Iceland. It's not the farthest one in distance, but being the only one in that direction, they probably extended it to create visual balance (since most countries are southeast of Rotterdam)
The thing about 2024 is that it wasn't really a single logo, it was more just a design theme for the entire contest. Unlike previous years, the actual logo was basically never used for branding with the designers instead using the theme of the "Eurovision lights" to create tons of different logos.
Exactly this. I thought it was pretty cool and dynamic, (just like the background music). Only problem was that they couldn't really pull a static logo out of it.
Malmo 2013's butterfly is ICONIC. 2013 was the first Eurovision I saw in full and I've been hooked ever since, thanks to that I will forever associate Eurovison with the butterfly. Edit: Stockholm 2016's orb was meant to look like a dandelion, those puffy flowers where the wind blows it's seeds across the place. I remember them using dandelions a lot in the imagery of the intro to the semis and final. Funnily enough they did a similar thing with the 2013 butterfly, making it a little character and showing its journey across Europe as a caterpillar for the start of the grand final. Lisbon 2018's logo looks to me like a shell with petals? in the background Always saw the all aboard slogan as a reference to getting on boats but i guess trains make sense too. Obviusly my most favourite is 2013's butterfly, however a few other favourites of mine were the 63' logo which i'd never pick as a logo from the 60s, Dublin 95' is really cool with the bold lines and blue-yellow colour scheme. I love the style of Belgrade 2008 with the contrasting paint splashes of red and blue, and Stockholm 2000, even though I know it's not very good and kinda weird It's a guilty pleasure logo for me I guess.
I’m really liking these logo history videos as they are very calm and simple. It’s also educational as it teaches viewers how the logos of our favourite TV channels or any other media have changed, for better and for worse.
I remember reading at the time that the 2020/21 logos wanted to be similar bc they were very similar years in terms of production, but the different shapes are because the meanings are different. 2020 was the 65th anniversary so they wanted to showcase all the participants in the order of their debut in the contest. The gaps are for years no one debuted, so you get huge chunks like the early years and then the 2000s when Eastern Europe joined. 2021 was meant to represent where each participating country is geographically from Rotterdam, to show how even in the virtual Covid era we’re all connected. So like the gigantic blue bar in the upper left is Iceland, you can easily see Ireland and Eastern Europe on the right, etc. Knowing that made me like the 2021 logo a lot more. I think aesthetically I still prefer 2020 but the meaning is really lovely 😁
My guess, is that the 1958 shapes are absolutely meant to represent people singing. It is something that is not the easiest thing to recognize at the first glance, but I think it’s a pretty fun and creative approach for portraying the theme of the show, and it also pushes you to make an effort while examining the thing.
There’s a point where the “base” logo becomes the logo itself, and the “logo” is more a whole visual concept for the year. I think seeing these designs “in action” as intended would provide really interesting context.
the harp in the 1988 logo is not just for Guinness, the harp is the national symbol of Ireland. the castles in the 1994 logo are representing the county crest of Dublin. and it's iE for Ireland in 1995.
1963 logo, rather than being in a grid, looks more to me like musical notes 🎵 🎶 almost like written sheet music, which is quite clever in tying the music theme with the country flags.
Yes. Actually, I have a real kaleidoscope given out to delegations. Inside you can see those same shapes moving (an F, an exclamation mark, a comma, a pointing hand); it's a beautiful keepsake from that edition.
I think last years yellow/blue/pink is the best of them all. I agree this will probably age into iconic! This years Northern light coloured sound waves leaves quite a lot to be desired as a logo, they really worked well as on screen graphics though; The title cards, intros, outroes, even the framing of the postcards was done in the most delicate way. Made the whole production beautifully seamless in a way I have never before noticed in Eurovision!
Its a little bit disapointing how it comes across you've done very little research for this vid. I'm not saying thats what's happened as i dont know how kuch research you actually did, but several times you admit that you dont know what things are in the logos when, especially for the 2010s onwards, theres PLENTY of sources documenting the logo design process and meaning.
Yes, I thought the same thing. 2019 was not star from the European Union for example - it was the star from their flag. 2020 showed indeed the flags for the countries participating but there was a meaning behind it. The circle represented the years for the counties in which they joined. 2021 shows the countries again but now they are coming together to "open up" in Rotterdam. The waves around the circle of 2022 were the movement of the water as they played music during the creation. 2023 showed Ukraine's flag but the pink wasn't just for "contrast". It was the colors of the hat of the lead singer of Kalush and lastly - 2024 - yes. the logo was simple but literally as they presented the logo, SVT said that the color bars are referring to the northern lights.
2018 - All aboard - refers to a ship, not a train and the logo is the shape of a nautilus shell. Portugal has a famous seafaring culture Yes, that's where the name comes from too.
the 1987 Logo is the first one that was computer 3d. this doesn't show on the printed one you show, but it was a "thing" back then. it is indeed very dated yet in reflection it has a windows 95 look when you see in on screen. If I recall correctly, and I'm scratching my memory here, it started as a "joining of the two broadcasters (BRT and RTBF back in the day) for organising together, but that went out the door once the location was chosen, and I think the colors were changed to be neutral to Belgium. Also I think that in the 1980's these three colors were the official Eurovision colors now, you can see them come back in the years to follow. However it is meant to introduce a "new space age" with the two balls representing planets and the beam connecting them the signal between the planets. Once we colonised the Moon and Mars it will make sense for sure. They also made straws from in in the first merchandising of a Eurovision logo beyond clothing and other paraphernalia where you drank the official Eurovision cocktail, in Eurovision colors of the logo, through a straw that went through 2 Styrofoam or hollow plastic balls that were covered in plastic or paint. it was very "health and safety out the door days" In the end it was to showcase the technological advancements of Belgium back in the day with the irony that the technology and advancements were from Flanders, which RTBF started to loath, but they kept what was useful to them at all cost, meaning that this was the most expensive song contest to date, even renting the lasers from a discotheque who received four times the price in rental than what they paid for it to buy. I worked for the florist who made the bouquets a few years later, he was the winner of the international flowers competition and he charged so much for this that he was able to rebuilt the front and interior of his shop and his logo without borrowing. The mentality of the RTBF and the Walloon community still hasn't changed much and if Belgium won today it would be very political though to avoid this the non winning region might take a step aside for the winning broadcaster to represent themselves in trying to win again. Also, have you noticed that every 10 years or so a logo just stands out, but not always in a good way? 1958, 1963, 1974, 1987, 1996, 2000, 2010, 2018, and lord knows what Switzerland will come up with next
This is an awesome video, thank you for all your research and perspectives. In some cases, we differ greatly in opinion, but that is ok, it is always good to hear how some elements connect (or not) with others. Thank you again for putting this together.
Dearest Adam. The "Eurovision" is a inter-PSB television network that connected points around Europe to allow for the live (and recorded) transmission of TV shows between "state" broadcasters. The UK end was based in the BT Tower's TV control room for many years (and had fun slips with "Eurovision" written on them to do the bookings). The song contest was an annual attempt to use this network for a live show. It had to be able to convert the various analogue TV standards (PAL-M, SECAM etc) to allow this to happen. Also I think you'll find that Grand Prix in French can refer to a race such as those with motor-cars and horses.
The Eurovision brand is also used for other live co-productions of various EBU members. I remember Germany, Austria and Switzerland all co-producedbWetten, dass...? and at the end you also always had the hymn and Eurovision logo. I think there are more like Verstehen Sie Spaß? and other stuff that is usually way above my age demographic 😅
The term Adam is looking for to name the retro fonts is "Art Déco", IMO. The line art in the Switzerland 1989 is the Matterhorn and the trophy was also a Matterhorn in crystal. The 2001 "circles" seem to suggest a V and are clearly inspired by the Lorenz butterfly.
2020 is meant to display the flags by year of debut in the contest, so you have the founding countries and the top and then Australia at the end as the last inclusion. 2021 however is displays each flag predominant colors in the form of stripes reaching for the center, mirroring the distance and spatial distribution from each capital city to Rotterdam
When I saw the logo for 2024 for the first time, I was also a bit disappointed. I thought it was kind of cheap and had been designed without much effort. But I have to say that this colour scheme together with the stage design went very well together. Everything was just right on TV.
The same happened with the 2016 "stars" (actually, it's a dandelion), the 2001 "circles" (actually, it's a stylized heart), the 1959 "donkey" (actually, it's Europa on the Bull), the 2007 "flowers" (actually, it's a kaleidoscope pattern), the 2017 "thing" (actually, it's namysto -a traditional bead necklace in Ukraine).
I like and love the idea of having a song championship between several countries, in which the best song would win. Here in Latin America we had the OTI Song Festival until 2000, when unfortunately it was canceled due to lack of interest from several broadcasters across the region, I wanted it to come back but I see that no one wants to interrupt the reality show or the soap opera to show this. I believe that the various Eastern European countries that hosted the song festival wanted to give the image of being very worthy of the competition, as they were mostly former satellite republics (and in the case of Estonia, Russia and Azerbaijan) of the Soviet Union, and who have overcome the red past with a new value.
The logos for 2005 and 2006 that you can find on Wikipedia are fan recreations of the originals. Especially the 2005 logo as the original it's more stylized.
France 1959 : I think it's our "Marianne", the french republic icon. we do have a statue (head and breast) in every city hall. logo looks like a first drift, with the neck, the arm on the left and the dress
The 1966 part of the logo represents TV buttons, 1974 bird is the symbol of freedom and song, duuh! I'm glad you liked Serbian logo. The motto that year (2008) was "The confluence of sound" and the splash represents two rivers Danube and Sava. Belgrade lays on their confluence. Also, I think we were the first to focus our postcards on something other than promoting our country.
Thank you for this pretty long video! I want to clarify some details I've figured out: While 2004 rolled out the first version of the ESC logo we know today, the actual logo was not that. Turkey had a visual theme and slogan for the event, you should've check that instead. Theme of 2005 looks better with all the effects (in posters and the live show), the vector version doesn't give justice. Theme of 2006 actually have more versions, you should check these!
A good logo is one that can look good not only if printed in colour but also in black & white or shades of grey. My favourites are 1968, 1974, 1985, 1993 and 2020. Though I do understand that logos of the last 20 or so years are primarily designed to look good when used on CD and DVD covers. But I still prefer the simpler retro styles harking back to the 60s up to the 80s.
Sorry but... you missed completely the point of most logos. From a video titled ''The Story Of Every Eurovision Logo... EVER'' I would expect some level of research behind it but nah, just a dude NOT explaining the story of the eurovision logos and NOT knowing the symbolism of the logos themselves, even of those that are striking clear. Not only that, he is ranting about the logos he fails to understand. That was irritating to watch. Thankfully, there a lot of comments explaining to you the actual backstory of the logos, something that was your job in a video titled like that.
i don’t want to come across as rude but why are you even analyzing these “logos” when you didn’t even look up on the matter a bit further? like you missed most of the references. why putting that little effort to such an impactful topic? btw the majority of the visual identities of the 10s and 20s are meant to be part of graphic universes, “analyzing” the logos on their own is quite lazy and confusing as the logos won’t work by themselves. i wish you dug a little bit deeper into the topic and looked at the bigger picture, not just the very surface of it.
All Abord will always make me laugh 😂🇵🇹 My favourite one is actually last years, I love the design for the Liverpool 2023 show, the bright hearts in the Ukrainian and UK colours is so striking. I'm still bitter about Malmo using United By Music again and feel like it was a curse behind all the mess that happened this year 😂😅
I think you have forgotten to name Lys Assia as the first winner 1956 in Lugane and the 1983 Logo in Munich has of course the "bavarian blue" as the right colour.
I don't know if they've already mentioned it but Denmark 2001 those scribbles form a heart (the famous Eurovision heart). Anyway, it would be good if you saw the graphic design in general to comment on the logos... in Sweden 2016 the logo was misplaced in Taraxacum (dandelion) and in Portugal 2018 it was a conch (marine design). In 2021 in the Netherlands, the logo has a peculiarity and that is that the flags were longer than others, representing the "distance" between the Netherlands and other participating capitals/countries. Finally, Sweden 2024, the blurred color design is similar to the northern lights.
It's the Song Contest produced for Eurovision - Eurovision is the associated group of broadcasting companies mostly based in Europe - my mate often tells me that
Love how you praise the uk for the 1968 logo for taking inspiration from Naples but then in immediately judge Spain for doing the same thing, although it’s more original then the 1968 one.
My first full Eurovision was 2018 and I liked its stage design. My favorite theme, slogan and stage design was 2019 and tbh the 2023 design is nice but it’s pretty forgettable
Hi Adam. I was heading to your channel just to ask this as an offtopic, but seeing your last video -brilliant as usual- maybe it's not that unrelated. Care to share the measurements of that fab poster behind you? I attended ESC las year and was looking to get some late memorabilia, but the official poster on sale at the official shop -in yellow- doesn't say much about measurements. I take it's larger than A3? Did you get them in person at the merch shops back there?
Loving this video!!! If you haven't already done it (and let me know if you have because I'll watch it), but can you do a video on the different season logo/themes/opening titles for Big Brother UK?
Many of these logos are recreations, and some bear little resemblance to the originals. 1956 - wrong; 1957 - wrong; 1960 - a crude screen-grab of the TV titles; same with 1961; 1964 - wrong font; 1970 - that's an inaccurate adaptation of the stage backdrop, the second version is the official logo (I myself produced the image you used, I scanned it from the 1970 official programme - same with the '76 logo, which I took from a letter-head); 1980 is wrong; 1988 - wrong font; 1991 - wrong font; 1992 - wrong font... I know these are the "official" versions by the EBU, but there are so many inaccuracies. I don't understand why - sourcing the originals is quite a trivial exercise.
5:49 The 1959 logo might be a representation of the Rape of Europa, where Zeus seduces Europa disguised as a bull and bring her across the sea on her back. This the mythological event that gave the continent "Europe" its name.
1990 it respresents lips but also the letter e. 2001 it's a heart, and the lines connect the capitals of Europe. Can't remember if it's all of them or just the ones in the contest that year
1:16:37
For the 2018 Eurovision hosted in Portugal, the whole theme was the sea and the "All aboard" slogan is meant to be for a boat or ship (and not a train). I'm pretty sure the logo depicts a sea shell
all aboard!!!
the toxic gossip train ✨
FINALLY SOMEONE SAID THIS, as a portuguese person i was watching this and was just SCREAMING at my pc "ITS SEA THEMED ADAM :sob: "
The creator could've done a little bit of research. 2018's slogan actually has the most depth and meaning in recent years

the bird on the 1974 brighton one represents the bloodthirsty seagulls that roam the brighton streets looking for prey
Reminds me of the woodstock logo.
As for 2009, it is mainly supposed to represent a firebird/phoenix, and 2016 represents a dandelion. Great video!
5:31
1959. "Is that a donkey?"
It's Europa sitting on the bull.
The trick is to look at it from a distance.
Stockholm 2016 is a type of flower actually. It's a whitered "maskros". You can blow on the flower
Finally, a video that let's me nerd out about the graphic design of Eurovision. Thank you, normal-looking Guy Fieri!!
Malmo 2013's butterfly is ICONIC. 2013 was the first Eurovision I saw in full and I've been hooked ever since, thanks to that I will forever associate Eurovison with the butterfly.

The layout of the the text from the 1962 logo is actually taking the shape of the country of Luxembourg
That wasn’t the 2004 logo. They only used the then newly created heart logo that’s basically still used today
the harp in the 1988 logo is not just for Guinness, the harp is the national symbol of Ireland. the castles in the 1994 logo are representing the county crest of Dublin. and it's iE for Ireland in 1995.
1987 was no two Snooker Balls, this was a Symbol for the Atomium in Brussels. And for the 8 in 87
The best graphics in Eurovision history to me is 2003, 2004 and 2006. The water in 2006 is perfect.
3:46
Am I the only one who finds the Hilversum 1958 logo so ahead of its time, so futuristic? And it was 1958!!!
1963 logo, rather than being in a grid, looks more to me like musical notes 🎵 🎶 almost like written sheet music, which is quite clever in tying the music theme with the country flags.
The 2007 logo is a kaleidoscope, not "nice floral patterns". The kaleidoscope works well with the theme "True Fantasy"
Yes. Actually, I have a real kaleidoscope given out to delegations. Inside you can see those same shapes moving (an F, an exclamation mark, a comma, a pointing hand); it's a beautiful keepsake from that edition.
12:14 The text: *is in Italian*
Adam: *proceeds to reads it with a French accent*
*ignorant British moment*
I can only apologise 🫠
The 1979 logo has an Easter egg in it, those circles in the middle was actually the IBA logo at the time. I’d actually only just noticed that lol
the 1987 logo seems to be inspired by the Atomium in Brussels
OMG... yessss you're so right, I hadn't realized that!!!
And now you have to do ....... all the postcards. Good luck with that one !
Well done Adam! Great video! I believe the logo in 2017 is supposed to represent a Ukranian Dukach which is a type of necklace
Your next video, I suggest: the story of every Eurovision stages.
I find the title of this video a bit misleading. It's not really a story of each logo, rather a reaction or a review of each logo.
HEHEHE proud of my country(🇱🇻) for having one of the logos he likes the most😌
I think last years yellow/blue/pink is the best of them all. I agree this will probably age into iconic! Pretty sure the london 1963 (LONDON 1965!!!) logo is supposed to represent musical notes on a stave, if it wasn't obvious :)
I loved your video a lot! Maybe next time you could look up a bit more background information where the logo’s are based off. Keep op going!
2018 - All aboard - refers to a ship, not a train and the logo is the shape of a nautilus shell. Portugal has a famous seafaring culture Yes, that's where the name comes from too.
"All aboard!" Portugal
You think TRAINS!
SHIPS!!!! You know, Portugese explorers! Portugal was a great seafaring nation.

Thank you for your informative contribution! This channel's owner should definitely put a heart on every comment like this one!
For 2011, the motto was Feel Your Heart Beat! so using the heart makes absolute sense here, especially since it looks a bit like it is beating.
The bird in the 1974 logo carries the other paraticipents mic probably.
One of my favourites logos (not just because of that edition's winner).
The 2016 logo was supposed to be dandelion
2018 is a shell. The whole Idea is that Portugal was a sea exploring country.
Thanks for this fascinating insight into Eurovision logos! Terrific! My favourite is Brighton 74 and least favourite is Malmo 24
The 2024 design looked exactly like channel 4 branding
58:03 The 2001 logo is supposed to represent a heart!! I like its simplicity and how it was replicated in the lighting rig for the stage.
The castle towers in the Dublin 1994 logo reference the castle in Dublin's coat of arms
Your hair is so dope! Really enjoy logo videos!
Lisbon 2018 is a seashell. Did you do research for this?
The Luxembourg round motif (22m) says ‘radio’ and ‘tele’ - so I presume it’s the local organisation that is a EV member
Who was Allowed to cook for 2003 riga🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you for this pretty long video! I want to clarify some details I've figured out:
While 2004 rolled out the first version of the ESC logo we know today, the actual logo was not that. Turkey had a visual theme and slogan for the event, you should've check that instead.
Theme of 2005 looks better with all the effects (in posters and the live show), the vector version doesn't give justice.
Theme of 2006 actually have more versions, you should check these!
I think that the signage for the first contest is intentionally using an art nuveau font, since it is often associated with opera buildings.
Isn't this video basically "Rating every Eurovision logo...EVER!"
God I can't stop watching your video your series are good and your the best and a subscribed to you YOUR SO AMAZING thanks
i don’t want to come across as rude but why are you even analyzing these “logos” when you didn’t even look up on the matter a bit further? like you missed most of the references. why putting that little effort to such an impactful topic? btw the majority of the visual identities of the 10s and 20s are meant to be part of graphic universes, “analyzing” the logos on their own is quite lazy and confusing as the logos won’t work by themselves. i wish you dug a little bit deeper into the topic and looked at the bigger picture, not just the very surface of it.
Thank you! I made a similar comment
All Abord will always make me laugh 😂🇵🇹
My favourite one is actually last years, I love the design for the Liverpool 2023 show, the bright hearts in the Ukrainian and UK colours is so striking.
I'm still bitter about Malmo using United By Music again and feel like it was a curse behind all the mess that happened this year 😂😅
4:09 The oldest existing colour videotape. I see what you did there.
Handle Gothic is the 2003 font I believe - used by Star Trek Deep Space Nine for its credits...
I think you have forgotten to name Lys Assia as the first winner 1956 in Lugane and the 1983 Logo in Munich has of course the "bavarian blue" as the right colour.
1974,logo with bird, pops into my head woodstock logo, bird on guitar.
2018 was all about Portugal's nautical history, the symbol was a conch shell, one of the most recognisable sea shells
2001 - the circles represent a heart.
1:13:05 "I wish there was more to these dots" mate have you seen the lights on the side of that stage in 2015
It's the Song Contest produced for Eurovision - Eurovision is the associated group of broadcasting companies mostly based in Europe - my mate often tells me that
Your mate is wrong - that group is the EBU, Eurovision is simply the telecoms network they transmit on
It's a shame a Eurovision wasn't held in London in 1965
Then we could say... LONDON 1965!
Imagine Eurovision putting all of the countries flags in one logo in 2025 like in 1963💀
Love how you praise the uk for the 1968 logo for taking inspiration from Naples but then in immediately judge Spain for doing the same thing, although it’s more original then the 1968 one.
The russian logo from 2009 is meant to represent a firebird, a creature from slavic folklore.
17:25 Eurovision Japan let's go
Fun fact: In 2008 there was another design presented but they dished it for the final design.
In 1998, if you rewatch the opening video that isn’t the logo that was used live in the show
The stage from the 2003 contest still looks amazing
Should be pointed out that Grand Prix de Le Chanson is more or less just French for ‘Song Contest’
my fav 1958, 1963, 1988 is an amazing logo for '80s,1993,1994 stunning, also 1997
2007 was a kaleidoscope, but not sure the connection of that with Finland?
hey is this based on the olympic logos video by a guy called graham (forgot last name) because it seems similar
You are right on point with the Ukraine 2017 guess. The logo is meant to be a representation of the traditional Ukrainian beads necklace.
Loving this video!!! If you haven't already done it (and let me know if you have because I'll watch it), but can you do a video on the different season logo/themes/opening titles for Big Brother UK?
1963, 1976, 2020 and 2021 are the only flags with the flags
I will always stand by the original 1950s - 1990s firework design
Bloody loved this video and just hearing your thoughts on all the logos. Funny, enlightening and all round great content!
Thank you my love 🥰❤️
5:49 The 1959 logo might be a representation of the Rape of Europa, where Zeus seduces Europa disguised as a bull and bring her across the sea on her back. This the mythological event that gave the continent "Europe" its name.
1990 it respresents lips but also the letter e. 2001 it's a heart, and the lines connect the capitals of Europe. Can't remember if it's all of them or just the ones in the contest that year
Hi AMTV when Will you mention Indepedent Local Radio
Are there schools in the UK? I'm really concerned.
😂😂😂
😂
You made me laugh at Brussels snooker balls. It’s the Atomium 😉
