    Hey Mordian,
    Played my 2nd game with the guard today and got my first win in 40K. Just wanted to say thanks to all the tips and tricks you provide with your videos.
    I took 80 infantry 1 leman Russ some bombast field guns . Had some death korps marshals for the 5+
    Man I drowned 1000pts of tau in Krieg corpses and blood. Reinforcements didn’t let me down either.
    Infantry was hard to take off objectives and played a hard game of attrition.
    Thanks buddy keep up the good work. Appreciate all the help

    Pretty tough to remember unique unit abilities for your opponents entire army from a single brief run through at the start.
    Isn’t that the point of gotchya’s being looked down upon?
    Because you can’t be expected to memorise every ability of every unit from every army?
    The alternative is stopping constantly and asking your opponent to repeat the unit ability every turn

    • @friskblackrose
      @friskblackrose 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Gotchya's are looked down upon yeah. As you say, it's very unlikely that you or your opponent will remember all of each others abilities for every unit.
      What a lot of people do (including myself), is agree to write some key things down in a notepad. This way you aren't always having to ask your opponent for the ability rundown every phase.

  • @PaleandPastey

    For the future, for pictures could you just take a single overhead shot at the end of each player turn? It would make following the description much easier.

    On the gotcha game 1. I'd say he did not uphold the highest ideals of courtesy and he did get a bit cheakie by not calling you on your goof when u said hey here's what I'm doing... But as you said it was more to do with playing to a high standard rather than intentional malice. A gotcha is laughing at an opponent making a "mistake" when u don't ever give them a chance to succeed. Alex merely let u make a goof without correcting you.
    Glad that you both enjoyed yourselves and I look forward to watching the other two games when it is not 4am

      @@nightmarejlm91 it's not. But as 40k is a very complex game with lots of weird rule interactions a smooth game requires both sides to make sure the other person at least knows what they can do :).

    Erm, Mordian.
    Such an enhancement does not exist for the space marine Stormlance Task Force.
    It is the ability of the wolf wolf cavalry leader charackter that you can attach to them.
    So potentially can have multiple of them in the army.

      I disagree honestly. Truthfully nobody remembers each individual units abilities and enhancements and it’s just not realistic to expect you or your opponent to remember it all. A quick reminder is super easy to do.

    • @johannes8270
      @johannes8270 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@pine_appole7837 In a tournament I want to compare player skill. And remembering rules is just part of that imho. Also: when you expect your opponent to remind you about his rules (after allready explaining them once) it becomes VERY subjective what rules are important, might be a gotcha, or you remember or not. And its not your opponents responsibility to do that guesswork. But i played a lot of more competetive minded tts. 40k is pretty casual even at the highest level, so this might be a "cultural" thing. For example I'm allways astounded, that running out of time on the clock does not mean you lose in 40k. (Or at least many play it like that). That said, it's a balance. I like a fun game for both, so the balance its hard. But having superior firepower and tellinf my opponent to warn me of his tricks bebeforehand cant be the way.

    • @TheDanthemanJones
      @TheDanthemanJones 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      Who can really remember every single rule and datasheet ability in the 20 plus factions and hundreds of datasheets. Ultimately, it is a game and the objective is to have fun. If this mindset is allowed to become prevalent at tournaments then it will kill the scene over time. I'm usually really generous with these kinds of things as it is quite a cheap way to get an advantage and you aren't really outplaying someone.

    • @spruceschmickington3005
      @spruceschmickington3005 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      I think if your opponent is about to do something that they absolutely wouldn't do if they remember your rule, you should remind them. Especially if they say something contradictory to the reality of your rules. "I'll tie these up."
      "They can fall back and charge, remember," is just good etiquette

    On the first game with the "gotcha" moment with the fall back and charge. He DID explain this to you at the start, so you can call it right there that he did his due diligence. BUT at the start of the game, your looking at the board, your formulating strategies, your opponent is going over a dozen rules his army has, you NOT going to remember everything he says. Does he HAVE to remind you of his units special rule every time you interact with it? ... this point right here comes down to what sort of opponent your playing against ... a gentleman will know full well you have NOT remembered everything he briefly went over at the start and will kindly remind you ... a cheeky/non malicious player will say nothing, resting on his laurels that he has gone over his units special rules and its not up to him to constantly remind you.

  • @Katalmach11b
    @Katalmach11b 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Firstly, amazing video. I love these tournament recap videos. I look forward to them!
    Ok so my thoughts on the Spacewolf game.
    I think the opponent has every right to do what he did if he told you before. However, if I was him once id realised you'd forgotten I would have let you retcon your move just to be fair to my opponent. I dont want a bad feelimg moment to happen. (This however, depends on my opponent. If they are a nice person then Ill do it, if they arent then I wont)
    I think you were 100% in your rights though a turn or so later to not let him change the secondary because he forgot something too.
    Please keep making these videos. I love them. I was listening to this while attaching some brodie helmets to my krieg models to make them look WW1 types. So the video.was perfect!

    Round 1 vs Wolves
    I think you're both right. I think one should assume a more laid back game unless it's explicitly agreed to play cutthroat. However, if it's a tournament and surprises like that aren't done literally as a surprise, change or made up. If they were mentioned pre-game, also fair game. And I believe you had the absolutely correct initial take and reaction to go "Ok, this is a competitive game, I won't play nice, either."
    I am on the same page of not playing nice is not the same as being a dickwad. You can play a cutthroat competitive shark tank game without any bad blood, salt or rudeness.

    I think you would win more games in tournaments if you went into them with your comp switch already on

    In regards to first game gotcha thing, he told you once at the beginning of the game, in my view its your fault you forgot, would feel bad in a chilled game, but in a tournament, that is what you sign up for.

    On first game, with casual play that would have been a bit rude, but this was a tournament.
    He was open and told you everything ahead of time, I wouldn’t say he needs to tell you if you’re making a mistake.
    It seems like you might have misread the type of game he was going for originally, you feeling it was casual and Alex wanting a more competitive game. He probably should have let you know that you were being a bit too open, but there was an opportunity for you to realize he wasn’t reciprocating.
    Sometimes these things happen with mismatches on what the players want out of a game, but I’m glad to hear there’s no bad blood!

    Personally I remind people they're about to make a bad move. I feel like not doing that is a bit lame. However I don't really blame people for playing it close if that's how they need to win.

    He mentioned the rules, you forgot about it. Now you will remember them i think. And you will be on you toes for other rules next time.
    Learning the hard way isnt a bad thing 😅

    If i were running a tournament i would make it a requirement for people to bring a print out of their datasheets and army rules "for the table".
    I think this would help both players speed up the game as you would have time in your oppents turn to read their datat sheets over.
    Also reducing gotcha moments and mistakes.
    Just my opinion man

    I generally agree that he shouldn't need to remind you, especially in comps. I do hate special rules in games though. Allows GW to power creep, by giving newer factions silly special rules. Everyone should be playing by the same rule set. Its fun to watch, but I'm not sure Id want to play GW, except for blood bowl.

    Just a point on game timings do you think they should reduce army size to 1500pts?

    • @willlondon4964
      @willlondon4964 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think he just got a bit unlucky with the pairing Orks and Gaurd are both more model and dice heavy armies.
      I played 1500 points chaos knights Vs imperial knights. The actual game once set up took around 45 minutes.

    i hate to say it, but on a ballsy move like the one you described you could have just asked "hey, what are the abilities on these guys again?" and you would have saved yourself a lot of frustration especially since you already know that you forgot some of the things your opponents army can do...So, id say that one is on you.

      To bd fair he's not using the standard arty + Lord Solar where you stick him with them to order all 3 combined with the mortar + Creed free fields of fire that he does use here. Which is often the most complained about IG combo when it comes to Arty.
