This movie holds a special place in my heart. I am a retired psychiatric nurse. "A Beautiful Mind" is the most realistic portrayal of schizophrenia that I've seen on film. The movie is based on the real Jonathan Nash who developed Game Theory, a groundbreaking mathematical theory. He suffered from schizophrenia. There were some small liberties taken in the movie. Nash's real delusion was that he was the king of Antartica, but Ron Howard figured that would be too much of a giveaway. The treatment that Nash under was electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and it is still used today. It actually does prove beneficial to many people especially those with depressive disorders. The wild convulsions are now treated with a medication that reduces them to some minor twitches. I have personally seen the big benefits that can come from this treatment. Jennifer Connelly won the best supporting actress Oscar and Golden Globe for her performance in this film. Check out "Labyrinth" in which she co-stars with David Bowie.

There are a TON of innacuracies in this depiction of John Nash's life, probably the most glaring is that the real Alicia left Nash to deal with his illness alone for decades. They only got back together after he won the Nobel Prize (which he did not make an acceptance speech for). The real John Nash stated in interviews that he did not like the movie because it was so wildly wrong and only agreed to it because he needed the money. It's a compelling story, but almost entirely fiction.

Yeah, the real story is far crazier than this, but I appreciate the attempt to get Nash's life and achievements into the public eye with a more palatable narrative for the average viewer. @@manutgop

I have personal experience with ECT. Without me divulging too much, I was diagnosed with 5 psychiatric disorders in 2016 after attempting suicide 5 times. My team of doctors decided that the best course of action was ECT. I was in a coma for several days after my 5th attempt and my mom told me that my lead Psychologist told her, "I believe that ECT is the best route here because I sincerely believe he (me) will succeed in what he is trying to do." My mom decided for it. I had 23 sessions of ECT in 2016. For my own experience, I am not for ECT because it erased large chunks of my lifes memories. My mom, brother, step dad, and a few close friends have filled me in on the large gaps of memory I have forgotten (even to this day, I take their word for it on what they have filled me in on). At the end of 2017, I decided to go back to school to get my degree in Victim Studies. I started in the fall of 2019, graduated in December of 2020, got accepted into the Experimental Psychology master's program in the fall of 2021, and graduated in August 2023 with my master's in Experimental Psychology. I am so glad I was unsuccessful in what I tried to do in 2016. I believe school saved my life. I am about to be 41 in April and I'm close to starting the best chapter of my life very soon. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this film.

I have also seen negative reactions to ECT but not as bad as yours. I still defend ECT for in the vast majority of cases it has been helpful. Like medications there are some people who just don't respond the same. I am very happy for you and wish you the best of luck on the next chapter in your life.@@Donbass02

I really like how we discover his mental illness the same way he does. I wanted to reject it at first. I was like no, he’s not crazy they are liars. Also the implant machine was made to look like other machines that actually existed in the 1950’s, and radium was widely used in the 1920’s and ‘30’s for its glow-in-the-dark ability, so it was again theoretically plausible that it could be used for an atomic clock.

It was one of the best performances ever, and the odd thing is it won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress, and yet the guy who carried the movie and is the main reason it won, got snubbed. I actually think they still would've given it to him if he hadn't had such bad personal press, even with winning the year before. A coronation of 'Hollywood's Bad Boy' is not what they wanted. The easy out was that Denzel was great, and him and Halle Berry could wipe out the 'no black actor has won...' script forever more.

Many years ago my closest family and friends said I had a beautiful mind in reference to this movie.. but the belief you had about ‘the job’s done, set up crazy and lock away so no one believes anything he says’.. is where I stand. Recognition by his peers for his genius brings tears to my eyes too but more flow from the diagnosis of schizophrenia he suffered.. something my family believes about me.. I don’t. There are no symptoms only their belief there are. I have been alone ten years now.

"Imagine if you suddenly learned that the people, the places, the moments most important to you were not gone, not dead, but worse, had never been. What kind of hell would that be?"
Fun Fact: The equations seen on the classroom chalk boards are actual equations written by the real-life John Nash.
Golden Rule Fact: To create the "golden" look of the campus scenes early in the film, the filmmakers took a low-contrast stock (Fuji F-400 8582) and exposed it to a colored light before loading it into the camera for shooting.
Influencing The Movie Fact: John Nash visited the set, and Russell Crowe said later that he had been fascinated by the way he moved his hands, and he had tried to do the same thing in the movie. He thought it would help him get into the character. The scene towards the end of the film, where John Nash contemplates drinking tea, is based on a true event when Russell Crowe met the real John Nash. He spent fifteen minutes contemplating whether to drink tea or coffee.
The Rest Of The Story Fact: John Nash is shown smoking in the film. In reality, he was a militant anti-smoker. While this film is inspired by the life of John Nash, there were elements from his life that were deliberately omitted: 1) he was married twice, both to the same woman (Alicia Nash); 2) in the past, he had several affairs with both men and women; 3) he was arrested by the police by scandal; 4) he fathered a child out-of-wedlock in his twenties; 5) he believed that through his mental illness the extra-terrestrials spoke to him, giving his advanced knowledge by means of a cosmic connection with them; 6) he tried to renounce his American nationality some times, in the belief that the U.S. government pursued him; and 7) he made numerous anti-Semitic comments during his period of extreme mental illness, most of which equated Jews with world Communism. Tragically John and Alicia Nash were killed in a car accident on May 23, 2015, when the driver of a taxi they were riding in lost control of the car and collided with a guard rail and a second car on the New Jersey Turnpike. The NYTimes said that although the two drivers suffered only minor injuries, the Nashes were "ejected from the cab" and died. John was 86 and Alicia was 82.

About the quote from the film you wrote:
I wouldnt mind if i lived in an illusion. It wouldnt be a hell for me at all. I very much a friend of the solution of Aristotle on the question of Plato's cave (you probably know that philosophical example).
Aristotles said: it doesnt make any difference wether someone lives in reality or not - because there is no method existing in the first place (and by definition its also not possible to invent a method) which could distinguish between reality or not.
Therefore its always the smartest thing to just accept whatever perceiptions the mind gets.
This question not only was already solved by greek philosophers more than 2000 years ago, but also by chinese philosophers (also around that time).
There is one chinese philosopher (Tschuang Tse wrote about him), who once wrote: ''I once dreamed i was a butterfly - without beeing aware that i am a human. I just flew between the flowers, enjoying my life. But then i woke up, and there i was: human again. Now i dont know: did i really dreamed i was a butterfly ? Or am i a butterfly who now dreams: he is a human ?''
This story also tells: it doesnt matter.
I cant know wether the world i am in is ''real''. But it doesnt matter. I threat it like its real. Maybe death solves a question which isnt solvable ''within'' realities.

Last year I contracted a blood infection that turned septic. I spent eleven days in the intensive care unit hooked up to machines with tubes coming out of my arms. The hospital gave me fentanyl, morphine and god knows what else. Either the drugs or the infection or both made me hallucinate badly. I had never hallucinated before in my life. I remember waking up to see a doctor who I had never seen before and would never see again standing over me and telling me that he was going to roll my bed outside for some fresh air. At another time I woke up firmly convinced that I was a spy who had been captured and now had to find a way to escape. And still another time I woke believing that I had been transported onboard a spaceship. The entire ordeal was terrifying. Everything seemed so real too.

    I love this movie.
One of the things this movie always reminds me, living here in the US, is how Conservatives alwayis go for the Adam Smith's theory that the best way for a society to progress is everyone does what is best for themselves, ignoring the better supported Nash's Equilibrium Principle, that the best way is when a group doe what is best at the same time for them and for the group. They tend to block initiatives to promote or regulate this behavior calling them Communist,
Considering this movie is based on a real life story, I cannot but admire his wife, the support he gets beyond what most rational people would be able to sacrifice, and how he was so smart and bright, he was able to decode his own hallucinations and start the path for a semi-normal life.

I just kept telling myself that I could overcome my challenges if I just put my whole mind to it because I'm reasonably smart.
And...I did get past it. More than anything, it took willpower. I'm not sure if everyone can do that but I was very poor back then and couldn't afford therapy. Life is pretty good right now so I'm glad I managed to keep trudging through that time. And I've never had to shell out for a therapist.

Based on your reaction to this one, two movies I highly recommend are Shine, with Jeoffrey Rush, and The Insider, with Russell Crowe and Al Pacino, directed by Michael Mann. I know you like to go in blind so I won't even say what these movies are about, but they are both 5 star movies imho.

10:55 And the Nash equilibrium (Game Theory) is born. Basically showing that there doesn’t have to be a loser in order for there to be a winner.
And John Nash didn’t see people that didn’t exist. That part of the story is completely Hollywood. He never thought that he was a spy for the government and he didn’t have imaginary friends.

Yep, Russell Crowe is a great actor. I think you've seen him already in Gladiator? Hard to believe it's the same guy. Master and Commander is another great performance. And John Nash was a real person - his big idea, portrayed in the movie, was the Nash equilibrium, a solution to competition among individuals or strategies that doesn't require a single winner.

The genius behind this great film is the writer Akiva Goldsman who pitched his idea for it to Hollywood producer Ron Grazer as you see it in the movie, except that in real life Johns illusions were auditory so Akiva made them real figures and of course fooled us all until midway in the film. He says that the real hero of the film is Alicia who stuck with John. When Akiva finished pitching to Grazer, Grazer cried it was such a beautiful idea. Akiva himself lived with his parents who looked after disturbed children so he understood a lot. There is a hidden clue before the reveal, when the little girl runs through the park, none of the pigeons move because she isnt real. A truly brilliant film and the acting and score too.

Jennifer Connelly won Best Actress, the movie won Best Picture, and Ron Howard won Best Director Oscars for this classic (also won Best Screenplay). Crowe would've won another Best Actor Oscar (he won for Gladiator) if he hadn't thrown a phone at a concierge in a hotel. This performance was Crowe's best ever IMO. The saddest part of their story is that On May 23, 2015, Nash and his wife died in a car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike near Exit 8A in Monroe Township, NJ. After a visit to Norway, where Nash had received the Abel Prize, they had made arrangements to be picked up by a limo at Newark Airport. But because of a change in flight plans at the last minute, they arrived five hours earlier and decided to take a taxi instead. Their taxicab driver, Tarek Girgis, lost control of the vehicle and struck a guardrail. Both passengers were ejected from the car upon impact. State police revealed that neither passenger was wearing a seatbelt during the crash. At the time of their deaths, the Nashes were longtime residents of New Jersey.

The subtle CGI in this film is pretty genius....if u notice when john first meets charles' daughter, or niece (i forget) but she runs off thru the park, & thru all the pigeons on the grass & they dont move, they just stand there pecking the ground...irl they wouldve all flown away or at least been stirred, but they dont move at all....a tiny little clue as to whats really going on in this movie ....& in hindsight, or once u know, its really eerie. Anyway, great reaction as always:)

Even though the portrayal of John Nash's life is not accurate, I still think it is a wonderful piece of work. Many of the difficulties John faces I understand all too well. I am very grateful for the movie as it often helps me through difficult times and problems that most people around me can't relate to and therefore are unable to help me sometimes.

This was an amazing reaction to an amazing movie. I love the way you interact with the story and characters. Russell Crowe is one of my favorite actors and this is arguably his best performance. I am always moved and impressed by an actor that can so realistically play someone with mental development challenges. If you want to see another great one check out "Radio" from 2003. It also has Ed Harris, as well as Cuba Gooding Jr. Based on a true story it deals mental challenges and racism. I have never seen a reaction to it and would love to see yours. Thank you for being so good at what you do.

41:03 this was the turning point of the movie, and it was the first time watching the movie that I realized John actually had schizophrenia. The problem before this was, the United States government had the resources, and the track record, of hiding its covert activities under layers of plausible deniability-and was not above convincing the world that one of its top scientists was crazy-and taking years to do so-just to ensure absolutely airtight security on a vital project. As Alicia walked slowly up to the shed, I waited in anticipation, knowing that she was about to discover that John had been sane all along-and then ten seconds later, the opposite was revealed.

Marcee represents the nieces and nephews, the cousins and siblings John never had (movie John, I don’t know the real John Nash’s situation). Also, John was getting into his mid-twenties (the equivalent of about thirty today) and saw all his friends settling down and having kids, and worried he was missing out on life. Marcee allows him to play the uncle.
It is sobering to realize that the first time John Nash walked into the Pentagon, he was only twenty-five years old. At the beginning of the movie, he is only seventeen or eighteen years old. This is not obvious as he is played by Russell Crowe, who was 37 at the time.
