The ending is beautifully sad. The old sheriff is a shell of his younger self, but even a man 20 years older than his father at passing yerns for a time when he felt secure by somebody older and wiser to guide him through the cold.
There is more to say. But that's the point.❤️

The point of the movie is that somebody has to pick up the torch and carry the fire when things get desperate and hopeless. If not, your society, country, civilization will collapse.

Some background: the movie is set in 1980 in Texas.
The airgun actually fires a retracting pin. These are used to kill cattle in a slaughterhouse.
The Sheriff does explian this briefly when is is talking to Carla Jean at that table.
The man at thevendbis his uncle.
Josh Broiln Lewellyn was also the team leader in Sicario.
The man that hires Carson is character actor Steven Root that also played Milton in Office Space and was also in Dodge Ball.
Anton was played by Spanish actor Javier Bardem, who most notably was also a villian in a James Bond film.
There is only 16 minutes of music total in the whole movie.
This film is the greatest Western set in modern times ever filmed.

There's so much depth and suspense in this movie. It's very easy to take everything literally, but there is a subtle Seventh Seal vibe to it underneath that I love, leaving the possibility that the villain can be almost a supernatural character of fate, or maybe he merely believes he is.

23:30 The subtitle says "swinging dude" but what he actually says is "swinging dick", meaning a man. When he says "call me if anyone else checks in tonight - by anyone I mean any swinging dick" he's just emphasizing that the desk clerk should call him no matter who else follows him into the hotel, even if the clerk wouldn't find them suspicious.
The "Nam" they keep referring to is Vietnam.
And regarding where he puts the air tank: He only uses it to get into places. He needs both hands to use his shotgun so he leaves the air tank by whatever entrance he used it to get through.

Chighur got the money. He waited until the police left, and checked the vent. He still visited the wife, because he saw himself as a vehicle of fate that had to follow certain rules. He made a promise that if the guy didn't give the money his wife would be killed. And he felt that the promise will have no power unless he follows thru, even if the man was already dead, and the money already recovered. A very interesting villian played very well. Databyter

The way I take this film is this: it's a modern Western...but with a significant change. There is no showdown, no hero vs villain showdown to decide the fate of those invested. That denial of a hero victory over evil, is what "No Country For Old Men" means. Throughout the film, the Sheriff bemoans this modern world, crimes committed with no purpose, just murder for the sake of murder. The big picture view...this is a violent land, full of drugs, money, murder without a sense of justice or goodness, and we are all subject to it, we hide from it, we try to ignore it, but it's still there. You have to be hard to survive in this land...which is a theme of many if not all Westerns, it's just that THIS world, this modern world with its lack of moral center, lack of empathy, lack of security...evil runs amok and can't be contained, you just have to survive it. No Country for Old Men.

Using simploe math, we can determine that this film took place in the year 1982. That would explain the reason the cars looked so old and the hair styles (long hair). It also explains the cheap hotels ($26). Today you couldn't get a night in any hotel for less than $100 in America.

    • @markhamstra1083

$100? Nonsense. Llewellyn’s cheap rooms were in motels. I live in one of the higher cost-of-living areas in the U.S., and you can easily get a motel room nearby for as little as $72/night. In much of the country it would be substantially less.

I wanted to keep as much as possible on the U.S. side, and then drive past the border area as quickly as I could. So I drove to Laredo, crossed the border and drove south all day.
But anyway, ten years ago a room at one of these hotels was under $50, more like $30-$45. In Laredo it was more like $45 - $60. I spent a night in Del Río at a motel owned by an Indian guy (as in he was from India originally), and in the morning he had set out a comal and was frying up eggs and bacon and sausage. Potatoes, beans and salsa, too. And there was tortillas if you didn’t want toast. I had breakfast tacos. I guess he learned to cook American food from a Mexican. Anton found a phone bill in Moss's trailer. He was then able to not only call the mother but could tell where she lived. He probably figured his best chance was to go there and keep the receiver on and see if it got a hit. If it didn't he could still try the mother's house.
If Moss had taken the guns and maybe a couple of stacks of cash, they probably would have let it slide. If he didn't have the tracker and didn't go back, they likely never would have found him anyway and it wouldn't have been worth the effort. But he got greedy. Even if he hadn't gone back they might well have used the tracker to find his home and it would have been on anyway.

"Nam" stands for "Vietnam"; it's a way of referring to service in the Vietnam War. And he doesn't say "Any swinging dude", he actually says "Any swinging dick", which means "Any man at all".
The US population is 100% immigrant, or is descendant from immigrants (unless the individuals concerned are Native Americans, who anyway immigrated thousands of years earlier), and those immigrants often named the new towns and cities they founded after those they left behind in their home country. So, immigrants from Ukraine, for example, named Odessa, Texas, after Odessa, Ukraine.

ONE VERY SURPRISING MISTAKE: Carson tells Chigurh he can take him to an ATM and get him $14k. The film is set in rural Texas in 1980, there is no way in hell he had access to an ATM, then, in Texas, that he could get $14k from. It's unlikely any of these people would even know what an ATM was, they were not widespread or popular in 1980.

    • @markhamstra1083
      @markhamstra1083 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes and no. ATMs had been around for more than a decade at the time the movie was set, and there were already ATMs that could execute transactions with more than a single bank in 1982. Easily finding one near the Texas-Mexico border at that time is more problematic, as would be withdrawing $14,000 in cash from one even today.

When your back tenses up the easiest thing to do is drink/eat vinegar. Eating pickles are the best for your muscles. Don't know how it works but it does work. I get Charlie Horses, extreme leg cramp, and as soon as you eat vinegar the pain stops. Lots of sports teams also drink pickle juice for cramps. It's better than taking medicine and unless it's really bad it works. Just the mama coming out in me.

This film was written and directed to be an intense thriller that by no means is slow but has little dialogue which adds to the tension, but watching this reaction and listening to the constant talk over every scene took away all the tension for me. Sometimes less talk is better.

She does reaction videos. In order to not get blocked on copyright grounds, one has to interject with comments. Otherwise, she would have to edit the movie even more than it is, & she'd end up with a shorter, choppier video. So, this kind of endeavor actually requires someone who is a talkative person, however annoying it might be at times.

    • @kinderjoker

There are certain films that require ppl to stay quiet for better immersion. This is one of them. Talking over the silent, no audio track parts of the movie will take away from enjoying it the way it was meant to. This film is not in the fast and furious franchise.
I get the copyright bitching part of your comment, but noone is going to get flagged for playing the sound of wind blowing or doors closing in a movie.
You also sound like you've never watched other people's reactions. Some let off screams, laughs and sighs, with a few comments. Maybe give a summary at the end. Her way is not the only way to avoid copyright issues.

  • @msmilder25

there's no musical score, so you can't use the music to key you into what's happening or what's about to happen...it really ads to the tension of the various interactions. Imagine watching a horror film without the music keying you in to the "killer" about to strike...that's why this film has so much tension...it's punctuated with startling scenes that come out of nowhere.

The purpose of sawing the barrel and stock off the shotgun is because it makes it easier to carry around and more mobile in confined spaces. Shotgun shells fire a series of lead pellets and the barrels don't have any rifling to make a bullet spin. Because of this, you don't lose much accuracy when you saw a barrel but you gain all that mobility. Anton's gun is also a shotgun but with a suppressor. Suppressors don't sound anything like that in real life, and for shotguns they generally are designed so you can hunt or sport shoot on your property while obeying noise laws.

Also 36:13 u asked where he’s holding the tank.
