He should have! Many believed that since he had won for "Gladiator" the year before, they did not want to give him an Oscar two consecutive years... Even though they had done it for Tom Hanks previously... But you know, he lost to Denzel Washington for "Training Day", which was also a stellar performance, so I can't be too mad.

I was just discussing last night the contrast in this movie of Adams' "individual ambitions serve the common good" vs. Nash's Nobel price winning method of search for simultaneous benefit to the individual and the community, and when they didn't remember who was John Nash, I mentioned the name of the movie, everybody remembers it, every body loves it.
Dasha, I have the theory that everybody is good at math, just not everybody knows it.
I used to teach remedial math, and I used to have students in very precarious situations, like requiring passing that exam to get their High School diploma to get into college and after several failed attempts, or failing math at college. Every one who took class with me and passed on their very next attempt. The key was undoing the conviction that bad teachers put in them that math is hard and that they were not capable. Once their self-confidence was restored, the rest was easy. They were never bad at math, they just had a mental blocks placed in their heads by inadequate teachers. I have continued helping people here and there even after I left that job, I have not found one person to this day, who cannot do algebra, calculus and analytic geometry.

    • @BubblyRainbows

As someone who is 19 and has the math skills of a sixth grader, I have to respectfully disagree. I'm not challenging your experience or anything, just stating my belief that some people just aren't wired for numbers. Doesn't even have to be math-related. Give me a phone number and if I don't repeat it out loud and constantly between the time of hearing it and reaching a place where I can write it or save it, it's gone. The idea of being able to do advanced mathematics like calculus is laughable for me. If I had daily tutoring for the next 20 years, I'd never get there. Fortunately, I've never found myself in a position where algebra or analytic geometry became relevant in my life.

Important to note: not a true story. Nash has said the movie has no root in reality. He never had any visual hallucinations. They divorced decades before. He never took any medications. They gave him insulin induced seizures, which in fact CAUSED many of his issues. He was only let out because he acted compliant. Good movie. Complete butchering of his life.

The real John Nash was mostly homosexual, and had plenty of "intercourse" with anonymous strangers in rest-stops on the highway. This movie is a terrible misrepresentation of Nash, and his great genius was in his embedding theorem and his work on partial differential equations, not in the game theory nonsense which was pretty obvious and of no great consequence.

I first saw this movie when I was 14 and was in the middle of my own psychological crisis. I remember almost breaking down crying with how much I related and relate to what he goes through. All I can say is you have to take whatever opportunity you can find to try and break that isolation even if it's just the chance to explain to someone what you go through.

@@jackcoleman1784 There are people out there that can relate to your struggle. It's not an easy thing to go through. I gave up on any real hope of romance or intimacy because of my mental illnesses, specifically because they can be so isolating. It didn't help that I was forced to take medications for years that had side effects worse than the symptoms they were supposed to suppress. Thankfully, my dad eventually took my arguments to heart and let me come off of the meds. Being unmedicated is a challenge, but it's better (for me) than the fog I was existing in when I was on them.

the problem with those psychotropic drugs is that they numb you. they numb your emotions, they numb your libido and they numb your mind which reduces your brain's ability to form the hallucinations. i understand why people don't like taking them. in a lot of ways they decrease your pleasures in life.
but at the same time i also understand the need for these drugs. maybe one day they'll come up with medication without the side effects or even come up with a cure rather than a "treatment."

This is a hard movie for me to watch. It's well written, beautifully acted, and all-around spectacularly made, and this is not a knock against its quality. It's just that for me, a person with schizophrenia (among other things), the movie feels like it minimizes the disorder. Though to be fair, maybe I just feel jealous of people like Nash. I get to deal with the downsides of severe schizophrenia, but I didn't get the genius intellect or anything of the sort. In fact, I'm a real idiot when it comes to science and math. This movie is a depiction of "winning" with schizophrenia, when most people with the disorder actually lose.

    • @BubblyRainbows
      @BubblyRainbows ปีที่แล้ว

@@nightfall902 Of course. The book is almost always more accurate/better. 😄 Most people with schizophrenia don't have both auditory and visual hallucinations. Auditory hallucinations are more common. "Hearing voices," and such. And I have no doubt that given the timeframe of the movie, Mr. Nash was institutionalized repeatedly and treated horribly there. Sadly, that happens even today to people with schizophrenia, despite how much more we understand the disorder. Tbh, I don't even want to imagine how unpleasant those periods of his life might have been. Thanks for the added context of the book though. I may have to add it to my reading list. ✌🤓

Well acted all the way around, especially Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly, who got a well-deserved Oscar for best actress and who is quite possibly the most beautiful woman ever on film (still is, she's hardly changed..) She met her husband on this movie, Paul Bettany (who plays the roommate, and played the doctor in "Master and Commander".) "Dark Water" starring her would be a great film for Halloween or anytime, more Hitchcock-type suspense than horror.

For instance, Cheryl Howard (Ron's wife) plays the "Harvard Administrator", Rance Howard (his father) plays a "White-Haired Patient", Bryce Dallas Howard (his daughter) plays a "Harvard Student" (uncredited) and even Ron Howard plays a "Man at Governors' Ball" (uncredited).
Dasha, the problem he was having with taking the pills was, as you saw, it changed him and made him not want to do anything. It also affected his sex drive ... and anything that required energy and thought.

Being on a psychotic break isn't a pleasant experience. Luckily, the medication works at least somewhat for most people. The critics of this movie point out that John fathered a child with a nurse but abandoned the family because he believed marrying a nurse was beneath him, and he never had a relationship with that son. There are many people living with schizophrenia who have thrived after being diagnosed with it, including Dr. Daniel Fisher, lawyer Elyn Saks, the late psychologist Dr. Fred Frese, and Eleanor Longden from the hearing voices movement. Don't believe everything you hear about schizophrenia because most of the information you're getting is wrong.

The saddest part of their story is that On May 23, 2015, Nash and his wife died in a car accident on the New Jersey Turnpike near Exit 8A in Monroe Township, NJ. After a visit to Norway, where Nash had received the Abel Prize, they had made arrangements to be picked up by a limo at Newark Airport. John Nash may have saved the human race from nuclear holocaust. I don't say this often because it's awkward, but I am a little like him myself, certainly not quite on his level but I'm one of those people who take naturally to math and algorithms and it's unusual for me to meet someone who I clearly understand is clearly smarter than me. (That has happened five times in my life.) This movie always hits me directly in the feels. I'm not schizophrenic, and I think Nash's madness may be the thing that pushed him past the boredom and laziness that has limited me into the exceptional greatness of his discoveries. When you are so different from other people it can sometimes seem like you must be mad even if you aren't hallucinating best friends. I think you are right that Nash's wife was the key to his success in dealing with his illness, and might be fair to say that she had an equal role in saving us from nuclear war. It is truly a rare movie that can capture such an esoteric state of being and make it accessible for people who don't live it every day.

We had a family member that had Psychosis and his Hallucinations were unbelievable, 🤔 Ok that came out wrong, of course they were, but not to him, he would talk to people that weren't there and he would see people that weren't there, and if you tried to convince him otherwise he would get very upset to the point of violence, and he would also have to get shock treatments. But when his meds were working he was the sweetest man you would ever want to meet, with a great personality and also was intelligent and funny. you should check out the movie "Rain Man"

Dasha, how do you rrrrrroll your R’s so easy and so strongly? I know it’s related to Russian accent but still, sometimes I wonder if you’re exaggerating abit for fun in the intros 😃

Sadly, John and Alicia Nash died tragically when they were in a taxi on the way to the airport, the driver lost control of the car and they were both ejected from the taxi and died instantly. SO SAD...

i have a difficulty with the idea of someone for everyone, or, soulmates, mainly because of some people committing suicide. Thus, what for those people? A person who commits suicide had a soulmate, once dead, what does that soulmate do since his/her partner is now dead
or what of children who die of lukemia?

I have to say you really talk a lot - I don't think you're quiet for more than 3 seconds at the most. At times it can be good to just listen and not feeling obliged to comment everything you see on the screen. Just saying!

His madness and his genius spawn from the same source... a hyperactive mind, firing faster than he can handle.
To treat the madness, they have to slow his mind down.

Love your reaction young lady. All the actors were great, not a false note by anyone. Mutual love and fellowship can work miracles to help bring out the best in everyone for everyone, giving proof to Nash’s beautiful theory/mathematical truth. Indeed, “the best result will come when”everyone does what’s best for themselves…. AND the group. It’s the only way we all”win.”

Wonderful movie, the only bad thing about it is that it romanticizes mental illness and also deviates a bit from the true story, but it’s a great film, love it.
