An absolute masterpiece by Tony Banks. Great music and dark subject matter. I think he’s criminally underrated as a composer. Phil Collins has overshadowed Genesis since the early 80s with his solo career and Phil is a master drummer, but Banks wrote the most engaging material. One For The Vine is another superb composition.
Stop saying "criminally underrated". Just stop, ok? Please.
@@poliziagrammaticale9430 Who are you the “anti criminally underrated” moderator?😁😄
It's hard to have a favourite!!
Yes very True and Steve Hackett 😉
The 80s is where the band made their money, but the 70s is where they made their mark.
Spot on. But then, thev'70s werre healthier than the 80's anyway!
Can't believe Phil hates this song. It's great
Genesis at their best,
Philly the '80,'s sell-out filllum star? 😩
I used to be a fan only of the Gabriel era, until I grew up and one fine day these masterpieces entered my life
At least you have more of an open mind than most.
This was the first album without Peter Gabriel , and Steve Hackett ... The concert was excellent as well !!!!
... STILL have the tee-shirt !
Chick music.
@@scottmisus4678 😂 ACDC is for kids. This is adult music. Classically inspired. With adult lyrical themes. Not your sex drugs and Rock and roll kids stuff. Lol
This is another one of the most beautiful songs on the album!🎸🎹🎧♥️
I believe that the tranquility and peace that I now enjoy in my old age is due to having listened to these songs when I was a child.
When people ask me about my life during childhood, I tell them it was the best experience I have ever had, and therefore I am grateful after having listened to Genesis and the entire English PROGRESSIVE movement.
I dont care what Phil says, burning rope is a great song.
One of the most beautiful melodies on the album. I love how there’s these gentle, quiet parts in the song and then builds to this very powerful classically inspiring parts. Bravo Genesis! There’s no other band like them. It’s not traditional Rock and Roll, it’s not traditional Pop and it’s not classical…its uniquely Genesis!
You have called it, Genesis are Genesis, full stop...There is NO other band like them.....
Prog rock. And the best of it.
Indeed. Me thinks Ludwig would approve.
Love this track. One of my favourites. Sad that Phil does not like this one
Phil Collins was about to leave the group because of this song. 😂
Great album. Never understood why people didn't give it much love. IMO Duke started their descent into commercialism. ...Oh, and as a drummer, got to say that Phil was REALLY "on" during this period. Drums and vocals.
The album that has shades of early Genesis and the later music to come. This is a wonderful track, and definitely one of the best on the album. The Lady Lies and Deep in the Motherlode two more amazing songs.
Deep in the Motherlode is my favorite.
I love The Lady Lies, so powerful, musical wise....
GREAT ALBUM.
Many thanks to Tony Banks for writing these poignant lyrics, gorgeous chords and melodic passages. Simultaneously majestic and melancholic. I love it!
The two most beautiful songs on this album depress me.😢
Tony wrote countless amazing songs and harmonies starting from the early beginning of this band. A mastermind ins terms of great harmonies and chord progressions.
Don’t live today for tomorrow,
like you were immortal.
The only survivors on this
world of ours are
The warming sun, the cooling rain, a snowflake drifting on the breath of the breeze
@James Hernandez
Definitely, and Banks with Rutherford provides the soul of Genesis
Merry Christmas. I loved this song when I first heard it. 45 years later. Still listening and loving it. Cheers 🥂
Me too still sounds so fresh and touching
I love all of the older albums , pure magic.
This is the last Great Genesis album.
It’s brilliant and magnificent!
No way! Duke was a powerhouse of an album. Go listen to it again and crank it up.
Beautiful. No one knows how to build up a song to an enormous climax like Genesis. There is no band like Genesis. All the parts are there. Great melodies, great chords, great bass, guitar, vocals, drumming. You can listen to Genesis for many years and hear things you never heard before. Thank you Genesis for all the years of amazing music and concerts with light shows that make you feel like you are in heaven.
There are many who don't wish us well, stay strong!
The last epic song in "old" Genesis style.Tony Banks legacy to "One for the vine" and probably the best guitar solo from Michael. One of my favorites and defenitive the best song on this album.
Check Banks’ Fading lights, it is a gem
Yeah, this could have been on the Wind and Wuthering album.
Agree. This is the best song on the album by far.
Cul-De-Sac is a very epic prog rock masterpiece too written by Banks and it was released later than this, it was released in the Duke album in 1980.
@@hankkornblut9887 don't you think the lady lies is at least as good?? It's badass.
4:02. One of the most melodic and emotive guitar solos of the 1970s. Beautiful musicianship.
Best part of the song. The only reason I downloaded it. So incredible
Yeah, I think the song would be better ending after the solo.
You have got to be kidding… it is pedantic and boring and quite clearly they miss Steve for first rate guitar solos….mike is a great bassist but he is not lead guitar
Tought the same, would have been a perfect outro
@@mikeowen1615sorry but you're dumb
Merry CHRISTMAS everyone 🎄🎅🎵🎵🎵🎤
Best guitar solo of Michael Rutherford !!!!
This is a masterpiece of outstanding music, I am so happy for this song, Phil Collins is always the greatest and the ultimate. ⭐⭐⭐👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿🌟🌟🌟💿💿💿
But yet he claims he hates this song🤷🏻♂️
Best song on the album.
I just read that this is the song that made Phil Collins leave Genesis 😮
Undertow.
I'm quite partial to Undertow, but I have to agree!
This album is definitely one of my favorite Genesis albums post Peter Gabriel. Phil Collins vocals are absolutely amazing‼️💯
almost twin sister of One For The Vine, unleashes infinite emotions forty-six years later ❤
a group that has completely changed my life since I was child 🤍
Burning rope, one for the vine... thank you Tony Banks
Sublime. Oh! to go back to 1978!
Genesis is Genius
Best song on this album.... Heard it the very first time in live, 78 at the spectrum (Philly)!!! Great lyrics and soaring melodies....
My favorite band
We were all listening to classical music without realizing! No wonder my parents were so keen to buy the albums -i remember the glorious summer day I got this(or maybe another Genesis masterpiece), and reading the cover in the car on the journey home.Oh God ,he just sang"Youre old and disillusioned now....."
Such an incredibly beautiful song
Superb song. So many different sections, vocal & instrumental, & it all fits together seamlessly.
I totally agree with everything in this song. It is perfect and meets my musical taste 100 %. Absolutely brilliant and beautiful.
The best song in the album. Who said Genesis dropped away their style and good taste for music? The may change the suit but not their charm. Merry Christmas!
They left prog because in the eighties It was old fashioned
Not because of collins being the singer
@@ariesmercurio1869 I heard it was more Banks’ idea to go Pop and the others went with it. Of course, I wouldn’t call this Pop but it’s closer than the Gabriel era, perhaps more “commercial” would be the word
@@coldresin I wouldn`t call this any more commercial than the Gabriel era stuff. This is still very progressive and complex, it`s just more appealing to ear than the PG era because Tony clearly had injected some unresistable ABBA influences into his songwriting by this time. Check Evidence Of Autumn if you haven`t already, it´s a Banks song that honestly sounds like prog/art rock ABBA. I agree with your first statement though. Tony has said in interviews that he always dreamed of getting big hits into charts, and after doing prog rock masterpieces for a decade or so he thought it was time for something else.
The 80s killed prog rock
This is pure unadulterated art. Some people, bless them, they just can't hear it....help them!
with an album full of beautiful pop songs, thank you genesis you give this old lad a progressive song! 😊
Wonderful Song of my favourite Album! Divine! Merry Christmas Genesis! I love you all! 🌟❤️🎼🎶
Génesis a gift for my life. I have Loved and enjoyed their talent over 45 years!
Great Track and merry christmas! 🎄🤶🎅🎁
Edit: Lyrics
The warming sun, the cooling rain
The snowflake drifting on the breath of the breeze
The lightning bolt that frees the sky for you
Yet only eagles seem to pass on through
The words of love, the cries of hate
And the man in the moon who seduced you
Then finally loosed you
You climbed upon a burning rope to escape the mob below
But you had put the flaming out so that others could now follow
To be out of the bounds and the barks of those who do not wish you well
You must blaze a trail of your own, unknown, alone
But keep in mind
Don't live to-day for tomorrow like you were immortal
The only survivors on this world of ours are
The warming sun, the cooling rain
The snowflake drifting on the breath of the breeze
The lightning bolt that frees the sky for you
Yet only eagles seem to pass on through
The words of love, the cries of hate
And the man in the moon who seduced you
Then finally loosed you
You're old and disillusioned now as you realise at last
That all you have accomplished here will have soon all turned to dust
You dream of a future after life, well that's as maybe, I don't know
But you can't take what you left behind, you're all alone
So keep in mind
Don't live to-day for tomorrow like you were immortal
The only survivors on this world of ours are
The warming sun, the cooling rain
The snowflake drifting on the breath of the breeze
The lightning bolt that frees the sky for you
Yet only eagles seem to pass on through
The words of love, the cries of hate
And the man in the moon...
If you listen closely it's...
"But you had put the flaming out so that others could NOW follow."
Completely changes the meaning. ;-)
@@louziffer You are correct! Corrected it. No more japan special editions for me, where the lyrics are so small I need to rely on third party lyrics 😄
As a thx, I still have a few copies of Tony Banks Seven - if you drop me a private message, I send one to you (if you don't own it). If you don't want it - don't mention it here 😅
Met Mike Rutherford and the Mechanics when they played my theater in Vancouver BC in 1986. Also knew Phil's ex, Andrea (Andy) Collins as she had her design wear shop a few doors down from a shop I owned in Gastown.
My favorite song of an often underrated album
Such a Masterpiece. Definitive Genesis cloud surfing imhop.
Mike's solo on this song is really good. It was very much like what Steve would have done.
And it was Mike's only solo in the entire album. I think he was too shy...
Wow.
Best song in the album!
You think it's building up to the guitar solo but then goes quiet, which makes the moment it does arrive after the second build up so much more satisfying
Rediscovered this album after many years without listening to it. Never had tasted it so deeply to find out it's wonderful. Burning rope my favorite of this underrated album.
I find it hard to believe Phil left Genesis because he didn't like this song.
It’s true. He no longer talks to Mike & Tony because of this song
@@JohnnyFontane528 lol, stop
I remember when I first heard this song and album. My cousin Lynette (RIP) had it and wanted to trade me for my Journey "Infinity" album. I only knew Follow you, Follow me off of it but traded her anyhow. That started a lifetime of me liking Genesis. Both Gabriel and Collins versions. Just saw them again a month ago, sadly, for probably the final time.
THEN THERE WERE THREE , Is a well done reflection of us , here on earth , soon , well be gone, and what we had done here is all for what will be remembered for
VERY TRUE🙂
Songs that don’t make you cry are not up there that great. This is one of those great ones
4:37 NO YOU DIDN'T?!?!? AGAIN?????????????????????
I love this song, i sadly ignore it a little because sometimes i want to listen to something less (Small Talk) or more (The Cinema Show) romantic from the band, and i feel like this track falls in the middle, leaning to the more romantic side, but every time i start listening to it i don't feel like stopping it, i just enjoy it, so in a sense its always a joy to listen to this... like right now i had to do something else but i stayed and left this comment here.
This album made me the man I am today...
"You must blaze a trail of your own, unknown, alone
But keep in mind
Don't live to-day for tomorrow like you were immortal

But you can't take what you left behind, you're all alone

It's very profound, my first genesis album at 18 in 78...Their music has served me well. Now I can lean on The Lamb...:)
Phil Collins said he doesn't like this song and i dont know why? Its the best song on this album and a great song
I was baffled too! He said this song is the reason he eventually left years later? Genesis was more of Tony’s band at this time, so I get that. Gabriel was usually at odds with Tony over the direction of the band, so Gabriel’s leaving left a creative vacuum that Tony was all too eager (and ready) to fill. But the band became more of a democracy after Phil showed his songwriting prowess. But why the specific hate for this song?? If Phil hated this, then he must have hated “trick of the tail” and “wind and wuthering” too.
@@bluestate69 He hated performing it live.
Phil was quite fed up by this time with the prog rock epics that Banks brought to Genesis. Phil has claimed that he doesn`t like Cul-De-Sac either which is another prog rock masterpiece that Tony wrote, that being on the following Duke album in 1980.
Y listening to this as I just was Phil hated it. Why? Did he also hate Ripples or mad mad moon. Or so many great early post Gabriel songs. Sure, not their greatest piece of work. But still better than 99% of anything else then or since.
Best song of Best Phil era Génesis Álbum absolutly an athem Phil drums are incredible
This is a magical song.
They were truly musical geniuses!
I'm here because this is a song that Phil reportedly hates. I think it's a good song.
There some real gems on this album
This is just what i needed to listen to right now, thank you : )
Peace & love
MERRY CHRISTMAS GÉNESIS & PHIL COLLINS 🎉🎊🎉🎊🎅🎅🎅🎅🎆🎇
Has a very Yes feeling
So there was life after Gabriel and Hackett then ...this one of many songs that proved that ...beyond doubt The greatest band of All time ..
Kept reinventing themselves...untill the didnt give Ray a real chance....still their legacy lives on ...at least in my heart ❤
Wow Mike Is such an underrated guitarist his guitar playing on this record is Amazing
La melodía de esta canción es emocionante...
Beautiful and amazing classic 🥰❤️
Put your head phones on and rap your ears round this album genesis at there best knebworth 78 great day great show 🤘
Yes my first taste of them never looked back
Beautiful song.
Underappreciated Genesis album, between prog and pop period (but more on the proggy side)
Que obra más magistral 👏 🙌 👌
The best track of the album together with Down and out. Maybe with Steve on guitar it would be better...
Tony Banks said he woulda worked more on the guitar solo if Steve was still part of the band.
Absolutely amazing so incredibly talented thanku so much love and God bless x
Very good album. ALL albums of Genesis are very good. Voice exceptional and drummer exceptional...
Masterpiece....
I bought this vinyl when it first came out. Then i saw the tour in the old Spectrum in Philadelphia. I've been lovin' me some Genesis for a long time!
This is a true hymn. Wonderful chord-progressions - greetings from Tony 😉 - great guitar-solo by Mike and Phil's outstanding drumming and voice. Heard them playing it live in 1978 - my first Genesis-concert and by the way my first rock-concert. ❤👍👌
No comments.. Genius
Rutherford guitar works/solo white Hacketter
Gracias! Gracias! Gracias!
Fantastic!
To escape the mob below, I climb a burning rope, .... & The man in the moon.....I love these lyrics
Thank you Genesis!! 🇵🇪
One of the only true heroic Guitar Solos in The Genesis Catalogue, almost Gilmour Eske.
True, but also very Hackett-esque.
Merry 🎄 Christmas 🎅 happy new year !
Phill every day happy and healthy life for you
Another masterpiece...
Sounds like some song from "Wind and wuthering" but very very excellent one (the best on the album) !!!
✨ amazing song ✨
i love how epic and cinematic this song is
The perfect crossover between pop and rock. If only Genesis would have stuck to this formula. ... 😩
The whole album is just amazing from start to finish
So fantastic and very touchable music I ever heard. 🌟🌟🌟👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿⭐⭐⭐😁😁😁💿💿💿
My favorite song of this album.
The best song from this wonderful winter and melanchonic album, the LAST TRUE Genesis album
Funny i just read far out magazine today & it says Phil's big dislike for the song !!
I love the song !! One of my big favourites from the album.
No worries , still love Phil too & most of Genesis songs ❤
Epic track.👌
What a great intro !
