Isn’t it amazing to realise that the band wrote, arranged, recorded and performed Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England and The Lamb before any of the members turned 25?! And to pull it off live in a way like this…unbelievable.

Wow that is an amazing fact. And they were all brilliant at their instruments. I know that there are still many young and brilliant musicians but what there isn't now is an organized industry that wants to sign them to a recording contract and nurture them. Instead the entire industry now just seems to use people for a song if they have come up with one and then spit them out and look for the next one. I'm happy that this special band and song was recorded for all of us to enjoy nearly 50 years later!

@@robertmcmanus636 Well, it was one way to keep the audience's attention and punctuate certain moments in the story. In a live setting, it's not the same as listening at home. People at the time - and even today - have accused Gabriel-era Genesis of taking themselves too seriously … but I’ll always prefer a self-serious artist a million times over someone just phoning it in. It’s undeniable how entrancing this performance is, and how magnetic both Gabriel and Genesis are in their presence. People could learn a lot from this period of rock music, especially in terms of discarding all apprehension and just swinging for the fences!!

What a fantastic surprise to stumble upon this -- my favourite Genesis song from their most original and creative art rock period, with the incomparable Peter Gabriel as frontman. There's something indescribably weird and sinister about Peter's vocals, costumes and miming here, which is what initially attracted me to early Genesis. This particular song has a nightmarish quality to it that I have always found intriguing. The performance has lost none of its freshness and appeal over the decades. Steve Hackett's guitar lines are uniquely structured, edgy and thrilling. The band gels together superbly. Great, imaginative drumming and harmony singing by Phil and fabulously spiky synth soloing by Tony Banks.
One of my deepest regrets is that I didn't go to see Genesis live in this period because I hadn't yet fully twigged on to how brilliant they were. I would also have loved to see them on the 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' tour. It wasn't until PG had departed that I finally saw them live, on the 'A Trick of the Tail' tour at the Hammersmith Odeon in June 1976. Bill Bruford -- my favourite drummer at that time -- was supporting Phil. It was a great evening, but Phil's vocals were not very strong and often out of tune.

What a thrill to see the greatest pop group of the seventies play. We Italians were the first to appreciate their skill and to love their music. Now anyone can see his favorites on TH-cam or in concerts. We could only dream while listening to their music or looking at the few photos published in specialized magazines.
And listen here: the phenomenal guitarist Steve Hackett invented the tapping technique long before Eddie Van Halen.

I was 13 yrs old - From what I remember ... Steve Miller hosted this particular episode (and said he "didn't know anything about this band" after making a joke about a 'wish sandwich' or something to that effect).
This clip and the preceeding "Watcher Of The Skies" clip from the same broadcast are what clued me in to Genesis. A mere kid watching something so unique and powerful, I soon scraped up the $ to go the Record Bar and purchase the "Genesis Live" LP. I've been a major fan ever since.
Many thanks to you, TMS, for uploading this in excellent quality.

Peter Gabriel has always been so outside the box and creative in his expression. Love it!

Midnight Special, dropping Fire from when music was, let' say, more organic! Belisimo!

Wonderful! And as usual, the cameraman misses Steve Hackett tapping, entirely...

It's THE LAW. Any guitarist does something interesting, camera must pan to bass player, or anyone not doing anything. I've seen it so often, it must be an in-joke amongst producers. My latest favourite is Randy Rhoads, RANDY RHOADS, soloing in a live "Mr. Crowley" but we get to look at Rudy plodding along.

The whole universe is Warner Brothers' singing frog. Remember? Guy finds a virtuoso singing and dancing frog that performs all day except for when the curtain rises. Then, croak. Back into the time capsule!
