Hands down, the best portraits of all of the monarchs, including Elizabeth II, was always their garter robes portrait. She looked spectacular in those robes!
In 2006, the Queens Gallery at Buckingham Palace held an exhibit of the exquisite collections of George III and Queen Charlotte. Amongst the Da Vinci drawings, paintings of flora by Charlotte, outstanding architectural drawings by George III was the display of King George’s garter star. Studded with diamonds, bigger than I had imagined, the gem-encrusted star positively glowed in the display case. I’d seen picture of the garter star in books for years but the photographs were flat and lifeless compared to the garter star in the flesh. 3 dimensions puts the piece on a whole other level. Thank you for sharing another delicious historical treat!
As a member of The Holy Orthodox Order of St. George the Great Martyr, it is always wonderful to learn more history on the regailia and origins of great dynastic orders like The Order of the Garter. Especially as our orders share the same patron saint!
Thank you, Allan! I cannot seem to get enough of this Order as I've been fascinated by it since young. Your videos are very much quencing my thirst for "more". Brilliant!
Another delightful deep dive! Even as a child, I was captivated by the Garter Star and regalia - gorgeous, regal, and noble; and by the whole mythos around the Order.
Totally fascinating, thank you as always. I am delighted to know that strange, round shoulder piece is actually the vestigial hood. I always think of it as 'the doughnut.'
Hello Allan still loving the videos. I got the hello magazine today and there was a wonderful section about the order of the garter Christmas decorations at St George Hall. And a wonderful garter star at the top of the tree in the hall. It was a lovely thing to see. Love the videos and have a good Christmas.
Sorry to be late to the party. I somehow missed this at the time. If you search on TH-cam you can find film of Queen Elizabeth II visiting Pope John in 1961. She is dressed in black with a tiara and veil and on her left arm she is wearing the Garter. I think that its the only time she wore the actual Garter. I think that its normally only men who wear the Garter, and of course they wear it on the leg below the knee. She looks amazing, every inch a Queen!
I'm in the US, are the knights to where the George and their robes at all functions or only at coronations or state events? I missed when they are worn. Great videos.
I have always been enamoured of the white shoulder ribbons. I can find no explanation of them, my guess is that they are to secure the collar but there are pictures where the ribbons are not present. Can you explain them for me please, sir?
Another fascinating video. I’ve just subscribed to The Antiquary and agree with your wife’s comment! A beautifully illustrated and informative magazine - I’ve taken a second subscription as a Christmas present for a friend. Many thanks.
At the last banquet I noticed more than usual the King wearing some very sparkling "stars", could you do a video on these and his medals, both the King and Prince of Wales seem to have a smaller set of medals recently?
Thanks for your awesome video. I’ve always wondered what the red donut was on the robe. Oh, it’s a hat, never would have guess that. So, Princess Royale Anne and Queen Camilla are part of the Order, but not the current Princess of Wales, Catherine, nor Duchess of Edinburgh. Does someone need to die, for them to get in, or is it years of service? I think they are both tremendous, and I’d like for them to, ah, “be in”. And I’m glad Prince William is, but his brother, is not. Cheers!
You've neglected to mention the use if a black aigrette that was peculiar addition to the white ostrich plumes on the hat of the robes of the Prince of Wales. The last Prince of Wales to have this black aigrette was the future Edwars VIII / Duke of Windsor. Why did it stop ?
Are the greater and lesser Georges and garter stars returned to the order to be re used? I understand this is what happens with the Danish order of The Elephant. I cannot imagine even the wealthiest members can commission personal regalia in our more cost conscious times.
I notice that you anglicize the word "qui", by pronouncing it "kwe". Is this common in England? I always learned the motto with the French pronunciation. Thanks.
@@allanbarton thanks, I had forgotten about Latin pronunciation. Also, I didn't want you think that was the only thing I noticed about the video. I loved learning about the regalia.
@@mags102755 thank you, I am an absolutely appalling linguist and have never heard anyone pronounce the motto to my knowledge. I suppose we all have different gifts.
I like to imagine His Majesty grabbed his old mantle out of the wardrobe and popped it on and got in the coach. Someone, maybe the queen points out its not the monarchal mantle and Charles just cant be bothered turning the coach around and go look for it. Too much fuss, maybe next year. (Obviously not the case but a boy can dream)😊
Hi Alan, not sure if you have seen the new documentary on the princes in the tower, but I wondered if you could look into the information that was being put forward to suggest they were alive the entire time. I feel it was very one sided.
How far the mighty have fallen.with the death of the queen you are left with a laughingstock for a king who has no real idea what he should do. His mother never had that problem.
Hands down, the best portraits of all of the monarchs, including Elizabeth II, was always their garter robes portrait. She looked spectacular in those robes!
I’m very fond of the Caldor photo of the late Queen in her Knight of the Thistle robe outside in Scotland.

So what was the dragon? It seems a bit odd in 2023?
Thank you, Allan! I cannot seem to get enough of this Order as I've been fascinated by it since young. Your videos are very much quencing my thirst for "more". Brilliant!
Much obliged 😊
Thank you for the excellent explanation of the regalia for the Order of the Garter. As always, superb scholarship and compelling images.
This is a fascinating video. Thank you so much for filling us “Yanks” in on all the meanings and such. Appreciate all your hard work.
Prince Alberts garter is Bad Ass. It looks like something a rapper would wear today.
Albert performed good service 😉
I love historical minutia.
Great video! Might the apparently changing blue tone of the robes be an artefact of the notoriously fugitive nature of blue pigments in painting?
Thanks again Dr.! ❤😊
Most welcome!
Thank you for explaining what the red and white circle on the shoulder is (the modified / diminshed hood)!
Thank you, Allan.
Enjoying this series thank you
You're very welcome 😊
Another delightful deep dive! Even as a child, I was captivated by the Garter Star and regalia - gorgeous, regal, and noble; and by the whole mythos around the Order.
Thank you for another informative video. Seeing the regalia is always enjoyable!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Now this is a treat, love your content Allan
Glad you're enjoying my channel 😊

Thank you for explaining the Red velvet loop thing on the right shoulder 🤍
You’re welcome 😊
I like Queen Victoria’s collar with the alternating roses the best by far.

Love the videos and have a good Christmas.
👩💻I see that King Felipe IV of Spain and King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands are Knights of the Garter. What a nice surprise.
Thank you. Wishing you and yours a happy festive season.
The same to you Chris, thank you!
Thank you! 👍🏻
You're welcome!
Brilliant - very informative 👏👏
R.I.P EIIR.
The diamond studded garter. Is very opulent indeed.💎
Beautiful
Brilliant... a fascinating account of the robes' history and development...
Glad you liked it!
Amazing video
Thank-you awesome 👍🏻 cool😎 video 😊

What a wonderful video - this & the last video constitute your very own Garter Book - well done and thank you!
A pleasure to watch!

Hi Allan! What a rich and interesting history, thank you!
At the last banquet I noticed more than usual the King wearing some very sparkling "stars", could you do a video on these and his medals, both the King and Prince of Wales seem to have a smaller set of medals recently?
I think you touched on it at end but would like to know more.
A video on the stars coming at the weekend.
Interesting, as always! Thank you, and Happy Holy days!
👍🌟
This is just so interesting!! Thank you

I believe the garter is in the gift of the monarch. There are twenty four knights, as well as royal knights.
The Most Noble Order of the Garter is one of the most vital orders there are. And its aspects, especially the robes, are vital as itself.
You've neglected to mention the use if a black aigrette that was peculiar addition to the white ostrich plumes on the hat of the robes of the Prince of Wales. The last Prince of Wales to have this black aigrette was the future Edwars VIII / Duke of Windsor. Why did it stop ?
As usual, I enjoyed the video and learned some new things. What more could I ask?
14:38 Charles was seen wearing the sovereign’s mantle at the Garter ceremony, 2024 (thankfully!)
Christian IV King of Denmark, surely. I doubt Sweden has had a King Christian since the Stockholm blood bath.
❤
"Honi soit qui mal y pense" ?
In '1066 and All That', Sellar and Yeatman translate it authentically as 'Honey, your silk stockings are hanging down' !

Am I correct in assuming that my King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands is also is a Knight in the Order of the Garter?
Fantastic so very Educational than you
Thank
Glad you enjoyed it!
I notice that you anglicize the word "qui", by pronouncing it "kwe". Is this common in England? I always learned the motto with the French pronunciation. Thanks.
Not usually. I would pronounce it the french way, 'kee', not 'kwee'
Too many years reading and singing liturgical Latin I’m afraid.
Yes, I would say "onny swaah kee mal ee pons"

I did indeed.

💚👍❤💞
I am curious as to who the first woman admitted to the order was. I suppose it was Mary I but could you confirm?
Happy Coronation Day to His Majesty King Charles the III & Queen Camilla. 6th May 2023 this year.
Hi Alan, not sure if you have seen the new documentary on the princes in the tower, but I wondered if you could look into the information that was being put forward to suggest they were alive the entire time. I feel it was very one sided.
The channel History Calling has an excellent response to that documentary
Why hasn’t Princess Catherine of Wales, not been honored by the Order?!?
She will be in due course.
I'm not sure Sweden had a King Christian IV
They did, my slip of the tongue says so. 😂
Great video, but now the Order has become a badge of shame since it was awarded to Tony B liar. Disgraceful.
The robes are stunning. However, the feather is a little much in today's society. Hat is fine - just remove the poor Ostrich plume.....
How far the mighty have fallen.with the death of the queen you are left with a laughingstock for a king who has no real idea what he should do. His mother never had that problem.
True, but it wouldn't be a first for the British monarchy.
