I think sometimes people forget, with all the computer-enhanced equipment, equalizers, tuners, Auto-correctors, and Auto-loopers, that the art of DJ'ing was not about being perfectly on beat or having the loudest, cleanest tracks. It was about expression through the use of sampling from other artists and splicing them together in a way that had never been done before. It would be the equivalent of using stencils for spraypaint art, which is now highly regarded as a legitimate form of artwork. Sure, he's not the best. Sure he looks a little goofy. But can we take a moment and recognize that this man did something that most of us never even conceived possible and made it work!? Respect your Elders.

Man, You couldn't be more wrong. I love all that stuff you mention but the 'ART of Djing is only about 1 thing Playing what YOU want to listen to not the !SHt you were told was cool or great.. The reason we are sound professionals and perfectionists is because that is the only path to respect. No one could trash talk your selection if your technique was impeccable and your sound was pristine. After that how much noise you made how hype the party was and how great your MC did were the only things people cared about As a DJ you are the back bone if you slack you are wack..dig?

Микс на бобине, часть истории DJ культуры в СССР - DJ World Hip Hop Classic's - Mr. Tape 1991 (russkij skretchit na bobinah).

As a child/teenager, I had two Technics tape decks, and I installed a speed controller on each tape deck to adjust the speed. I used the reel (tape) to record, alternately (on the tape decks) I wound very quickly forwards or backwards (depending on which track I wanted to have next), and I adjusted the speed on the self-made speed controllers. Those were my first DJ attempts. When I had the money I bought 2 Technics 1210 mk2. :) (Sorry for my English)

Companies like Numark were not even born yet. The DJ choice of equipment was Pioneer 707s or 909s for Reels, Garrard DD450 or Technics 1800 turntables, Bozak or GLI mixers, Crown, Carver, Marantz or Pioneer amps and finally for speakers, GLI, Bose 901, Altec Lansing or EV Sentry speakers. I think you could use a marker on the tape without messing up the magnetism or place a dot on the edge. Switching reels would be pretty difficult so you would pre-record the reel for the set, losing the possibility to improvise on selections. Also takes a lot of time to seek to a position. Still very cool.

    • @NEO_MusicProductions

I’m a Music Prod/ Dj who uses sync and all this “digital technology” I can assure you that technology gives me LOTS of time to do more important fun things besides Beatmatching, and you can not call me less skilled than old school dj’s who beatmatch. I focus on extremely intense buildups, bass swaps, voice swaps, and I barely if ever let the track play alone. 95% of my mixing is live mashups, and that is an art in itself. Look up James Hype. Yeah we might sync, but this allows us to pretty much produce new songs, never heard before, live before our audience. It’s a completely different thing. I highly respect the video and I would like for the hate against modern tech house dj’s to stop because we focus on different things. Amazing and Captivating are subjective matters. As a Tech House dj I care about how hard can I make the next song drop. It’s all about target audience. And don’t start me on “oh you use sync you’re not talented” cause I play classical Piano and got my Music High school Diploma (Abitur in Germany) age 13 playing the original Rhapsody in Blue by Gerschwin. But god damn I do enjoy myself a hard, nasty Techno drop.

At that time there was no Record shops in Latvia (former soviet union) where you could buy vinyls with fresh dance music.
Music was "imported" and copied "illegally" tru various sorces.
Only way to for western dance/club music to spred was by copying it from reel to reel. Guys modified their equipment, added variable speed option to be able to beatmach tracks and so on. Those guys was true pioneers of "modern" djing at that time and place where they builded their own sound systems, orginize parties, and bringed "western" club club culture behind "iron curtain"...
Yung generation never will understand these because everything are already "done" for them where "dj´ing" in nowdays became like another consumer form of "expression" where ready products and services are sold for "wannabee" generation...

I had a varispeed Walkman (well. It had a tiny hole in the back and one day I took it apart to find out what it was. Tured out there was a slot in a component on the circuit board to fine tune the speed). I used to speed up tracks on the tape player Walkman with a tiny screwdriver snd get the beats in time with my non varispeed record deck. This was when I was about 13. I'm 48 now and still mixing.
