My dad used to work 6 and a half days a week through 60s and 70s and as recently as mid 1960s Christmas Day wasn’t a Scottish holiday.
Now, say you are someone who has a paid job through the week and volunteer on a Saturday, so the only time you can go shopping is Sunday. Live alone and no one to do shopping at any other time. I have been there, so I done my shopping on a Sunday, housework on a Sunday, only time I could do any of it. Fortunately I’m an atheist so church wasn’t getting in the way, but there were a few times I had to volunteer on a Sunday, particularly when leading walks!
The trap not to fall in to is keeping something because it fitted in with the church and religion when 50% of the population do not identify as religious. Opening that extra day could also create some part time jobs that might just suit a student or schoolleaver for example, while fulfilling a demand for that extra convenience.

Closing on Sundays would shorten the hours available for employees to work. For example, my partner despite fully qualified with over 20 years experience is paid very low wages . Without 18 hours overtime per week, we would be on such low salary we couldn't even afford to eat ! By reducing the hours available for workers you would be making a lot of people a LOT poorer.

The pubs have been open for a while in stornoway. So it's ok to get drunk but not nip out for a pint of milk or loaf of bread. The licencing board in Scotland consists of council members , a minister and a fire officer. They all agreed to open them on Sunday. Traffic in Stornoway is really bad at the weekend, this would ease congestion. This won't affect church goers as the don't have to go to Tesco if the don't want to. It would be nice if we all had a 7th day to relax , but many people need the extra money just now , so extra hours would be better for employees

Having Visited Stornoway, I can attest to the positive and negative impacs of everything (with a few exceptions) being closed on a Sunday. For tourism, you can understand why things need to be open. (And I'm glad that at least one of the hotels did have it's bar/cafe open, otherwise my wife and I would have been drudging around in the rain with nothing to do) For the residents, it may be their choice and I respect that, I don't like having to work on a Sunday, but do if necessary.

So we need to open for tourists. Oh come on, there’s plenty to do without going shopping. Go to the fantastic beaches or climb a mountain for the view but to say theres nothing to do???

Why do the mad zealots always want to impose their misery on everyone else? If you want to sit in a hut on Sunday and chunter away, you’re free to do it, but normal folk don’t need to be controlled by dodgy dinosaurs. Those currently in power will become extinct over time, but all the young people will be gone by then. You will be left with Incomers from England and Edinburgh using the houses for holidays and they use Asda and Tesco not local shops. Don’t blame Calmac for killing the islands, it’s self inflicted madness.

With 99% plus of uk population being non “mad-Christian”, why should these fools still have any say over how the rest of us want to live, and then they wonder why the young folk can’t wait to leave the island! If they don’t want to be like uk then stop giving them the money generated in the cities.

A good account of the Lord's Day observance is given in the book by Bishop Daniel Wilson. I have read extracts from it on my channel, the chapter The Practical Duties of the Christian Sabbath.

Construction is basically modern slavery in Scotland 50 -70 hrs is the normal working week. Health and safety are only concerned with workwear and trip hazards. I've contacted them to raise my concerns on a few occasions only to receive a generic answer, absolving themselves from any reason to do anything about it.

It’s not all to do with religion and no one else’s business who don’t live on Lewis and Harris. We love the quiet Sundays where all of us have the same day off. Surely people can go without food shopping for one day. We take no notice of tourists. It’s well documented that everything is shut on a Sunday apart from a few things. If you’re bored without shops open on a Sunday that says more about you then.
70% aren’t religious but everyone going on about this. If you open on a Sunday then the buses have to run. Coop have already said they will open too so we will be like the rest of the UK. Can’t think of anything worse than that tbh

Probably do their grocery shopping online on a Saturday and the delivery slot is a Sunday so is that breaking the sabbatical? This is 2024 . Get with it . The country has changed since the 1950’s that was then . It’s sad for some but that’s the way it is. We don’t really do Hogmanay celebrations anymore like we used to. But again that’s the way it is . Got to move on . How can you ask us to go to church when the Church of Scotland is closing a lot of them ???

I suppose it's possible that, if it were to open on the Lord's Day, some (many?) people would avoid shopping there any day of the week. Could it lose customers?
