    I know that as of today this vid is almost 4 years old, I watched it when it was new. I just bought one and this information was priceless. Sometimes you never know when you'll need information like this and knowing where to look is key. Thanks Harvey.

    Thank you!!! I just got a brand new wiring harness for my 110 and installed it and it had no spark, so I got to 111 in your video and saw the part about the yellow black wire on the cdi going straight to the coil, and looked over my wiring again and saw that I had the cdi plug plugged into the hand control and the hand control plugged into my cdi, now I’ll change em around. Thank you so much, your a life saver

    I just snagged a SUNL ATV-109 today from a co-worker that needs to have the battery charged, carb cleaned and a good romping to clean out the cobwebs. Maybe not in that order.
    He also told me that it runs great for about half an hour, then it shuts off and wont start again until it cools down. I've watched a couple other videos and done some research but your video not only laid things out better than everything else but also made more sense.
    Thank you!

      Hey INECIKlavier!!! Sound like U got a great deal!!! About heating up and shutting down, could be Ur CDI or spark coil, but, before U mess with them, I would make sure the gas flow into the carb is good, I have running across a few smaller China carbs where the bowl fills very slowly, especially when the motor gets hot, had something to do with the float needle valve, I just swapped them out.... Good luck with Ur new ATV, enjoy it!!! Thanks for the info, encouragement, watching, and commenting!!! Please let me know how it all turns out....

    Harvey thank you,I bought a Honda 110 for fifty dollars . Pretty much complete. It even had the tools,that are kept on the frame .The fenders were just faded a bit. I could not get spark I worked on it for about 6 hours and I came watched your video and you said you got no ground you got nothin. So I ran ground wires everywhere and by gosh I got spark and it started up right away. I thought it was grounded all ready but it wasn't. The bike had set in a Barn for over 15 years . Just think just because of a Ground wire . Thank you. Oh I also have a little Chinese quad 110 and a 250 They are okay could be better if they made their frames stronger. I

      Harvey Spooner I started following your how to today. So far I have the engine off the frame...i have two of them, and I'm trying to put together one working engine. Is the coil pack for the spark twelve volt? I ask because I need to know if I can rig it up with the jumper or if I need to have it connected to the converter

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Joe, For a Capacitive Discharge Ignition, (CDI), system the only power to the spark coil is the output from the CDI box, the CDI box maybe powered by the battery, (DC CDI box), of from the stator, (AC CDI box),... I will be doing some wiring on the Jonway 110cc mini quad over the next week or so, please stay tuned.... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

    Hello Harvey - i have found your videos quite helpful - i understand the basics but solid state ignition systems were always a mystery to me - thanks to your videos i now have a clue when it comes to CDI.
    I have a chinese quad - i believe 110cc - not starting. Kick start is broken and only use electric start. There is spark as starter first engages but then stops as cranking continues. I followed your troubleshooting and red wire out of the case - it is there but not connected - has an insulated female lug that goes nowhere. Come to find that the cdi gets 12v dc somewhere from the battery circuit. When i crank i see the voltage to the cdi drop to about 8vdc. I measure the power from the case as 50vac - should i connect that direct as to the cdi power (black/red)? Any other recommendations?

    Hi Harvey. I really enjoy watching your videos. You mentioned the gy6 DC in this video. I have a gy6 150cc buggy that is 12VDC.....my question is it has a voltage regulator and I'm wondering what it does when the voltage coming from the stator is DC? Most, like you said, turn the 12vac into 12vdc to charge the battery so does that mean that on a DC stator, that the voltage regulator isn't needed or does it do something else? Thanks

Well, I got a push button replace into handlebar for push to start to work, on/ff didn't, Key works, now i have no spark, think the CDI is dead. ordered New one, after this video tomorrow weather permitting, do some checking OHm checks. as always, these videos are perfect.

    Great video Harvey. I have a question for you. I have a 2006 hammerhead 250 go kart that I am not getting spark on. I bypassed the kill switch and the ignition to make sure it was not the problem. Still no spark. I cut the black and white lead coming out of the CDI and when I touch the wire with my fingers the spark plug has a continuous spark. I am assuming this is some sort of grounding problem. Would you agree?

    I have a 2008 Baja 110cc quad. I'm getting fuel and spark. Starter and solenoid are new. New spark plug as well.
    My problem is, it cranks and cranks, but doesn't turn on. Everytime when it cranks, you can hear some noise from the exhaust (like a popping noise as if it wants to turn on; with the choke closed AND opened). But, I bought this from an amateur mechanic who, which had appeared to open the valve end of the engine, and who also stripped the spark plug entrance (it goes in fine all the way with a rachet and in small areas, it tightens up, but it keeps spinning when you try to tighten it on the last thread).
    I have yet to use a multimeter, but I will be buying one tomorrow. I've only been using a fuse checker (one of those tools w/ an alligator end that lights up when you touch power)

    2008 50cc scooter won't start. Ran in 2018. So-so start but got it running. Ran OK for 3 months. Couldn't start one day to go to work. Ugh!
    Things I've done.
    - Checked battery volts = 12.5V
    - Installed new spark plug = good spark
    - Installed new carb
    - New gas filter. Checked gas flow post-filter using cylinder vacuum = Good flow.
    Now what? Stumped.
    After installing carb, do I need to prime? Doesn't look like gas is getting to spark plug. Plug looks dry.
    Any suggestions or questions?
    Thanks for the support!

    Harvey I need your advice, I have a 90cc 4 stroke believe it's a kazuma engine. I recently replaced all the wiring, along with stator, rectifier, coil, starter solenoid, ignition switch, everything due to some wires shorting out.
    When I replaced everything,it fired up in 1st try, a couple days later it wouldn't start. Had low compression, so I tore into the top end to check everything.
    Ended up replacing head gasket and stuff. Found both valves,so took them off, removed all the carbon and re installed, and adjusted the valves.
    Re installed engine, put everything back together, and I have no spark.
    Checked all the connectors, all "look" good.
    I have a multimeter but it's too fancy for me, can't figure out how to use it 😂.
    What do you think it could be?
    Thanks.

    Hi Harvey, I saw your video and it has helped a lot. First of all I have a quad MPX 150 and it had a spark once (just one I saw it with a test plug but no more). I have checked the wires you mentioned and they check good (ohms, continuity, etc...) but I have a wire I can't determine where it goes. It is coming out of the engine in that five wire configuration you talked about and it is Red/Blk stripe. It has a single female terminal but no other male anywhere to be found. It reads 400 ohms. Hey Harvey, good video. I just picked up a Zongshen ZS125ST ATV for free. I want to get it fired up for my kids. The motor cranks but doesn't kick. The wiring harness is all hacked up and I think there is supposed to be a radiator or oil cooler or something? There certainly is definitely something missing. I'm solid with the wrenching and the electrics, just not sure where to start on this thing. Do you know where I can pick up a manual so I can begin finding parts to piece this thing back together? Thanks.

      Hey Brad, Can U make a video of it, to be honest, I ran a couple of searches and I did not find anything that I would trust, having said that, it seems that the engine maybe a transplant from a Zongsten scooter, if that is so, U may have some more luck getting a manual and parts. Look up Zongsten 125cc scooter, (I'm assuming 125cc, use the correct engine size in your search), Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

In my case (red and white trigger wire) (red and yellow goes to the cdi main) (Green and white is earth) ( yellow to rectifier) and (white to rectifier) .What should be roughly the voltage on Cranking best Regards James

    Hi Harvey , I was wondering if i could get your advise , i have a 110cc China Quad , it screwed up a couple batteries so i invested in a higher quality one and then i changed all of the Ignition parts , CDI , Reg everything , still appear to have no spark but it turns over ok , scratching my brain now trying to work out why it wont kick , any advise would be grateful , i enjoyed your video

      Hi Casper, Seems that U R telling me that your quad was killing batteries, U improved the battery situation and U replaced the CDI, Voltage regulator, and ignition coil and now it will not start... If I understand Ur situation, the first thing I would do is go back to the OEM CDI and ignition coil... If still no spark, I would disconnect the engine off wiring, (the black wire with the white stripe from the CDI box, cut or remove it in a way such that it can be hooked up again), and see if U get spark again.... Some of the CDI boxes use AC, others use DC, so, changing the CDI box may have killed Ur spark, removing the engine off wire will tell U if the problem has to do with the wiring.... Let me know how it turns out.... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!

    I went through my 110cc China quad and got the same ohm readings as you did in the stator wires and the cdi except black and red. I have swapped in a new cdi and coil, still no spark. What is the likelihood that the stator is bad? Is there a way to test it?

      Hey Darren, Assuming that U R replacing one AC powered CDI for another, just match the wire colors and all should be good, blue and yellow, pulse generator, black and red, power from the stator, black and yellow, ignition coil, green is ground, and black and white should be engine off when grounded.... Nick, Given that U tested everything and got good readings, I would disconnect and float the on off wire and hook an extra ground between the motor and frame and wire harness green wire and the ground on the spark coil just to be sure, if no spark, Ur CDI must be dead... Should cost around $15 on eBay.... If U live near the Hudson Valley of NY, I could look at it for you... Let me know how it all turns out.... Thanks for the info, asking, watching, and commenting!!!

      Hey Mike, Try this simple test, cut the black and white wire that does to the CDI box, (cut it such that it can be reconnected easily), if the ATV starts and will not turn off, U are half way to the solution, (U can use the choke or disconnect the spark plug, (use a rag or U will get juiced), to shut it down),. Assuming that U got the engine running from above, I would buy this from eBay, (

      Hey Jorge!!! There should be a couple of yellow wires, or a yellow and pink wire coming from the motor stator, they go to the voltage regulator attaching to the yellow or yellow and pink wires, the red wire from the voltage regulator goes to the + side of the battery, the green or black wire from the regulator goes to ground, (ATV frame), and the negative side of the battery.... www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-4-PIN-VOLTAGE-REGULATOR-RECTIFIER-CHINESE-ATV-QUAD-125cc-150cc-EL011-/291173668783?hash=item43cb4d97af:g:tyIAAOSws65TpKI8&vxp=mtr , I hope this helps, thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

    Hey Harvey. Wanted to say thank you. Got my son's Tao Tao 110 running for the first time after 6 years of just sitting there. Pulled the kill switch wire from the CDI as you pointed out, sprayed some WD-40 in the carb and it started. Ordered a new carb from eBay for $15 and it starts right up, every time.
    Not sure which of the 5 or 6 redundant kill switches is the culprit, but hoping I can remove them all except for the key and the left side handle bar red button kill switch.
    Question: Assuming I can just splice the "kill" wire to the CDI to only the key and the red button on the handle bar and I'll be able to shut the quad off? In the mean time, using the carb's choke to kill the engine, which works every time.

    Hi Harvey, i was wondering if you have ever encountered a problem that im having. so i have a kandi 49fm-5 dune buggy go kart, i recently restored it, but im having a starter solenoid ground sparking everytime i hook it up to ground and also it won't start with my key. i put a new motor in it, which is a 125cc which i bought off line and i replaced the harness on it which i got from ebay, before this happened it wasn't doing any of that. in the process of me trying to get it started which was by jumping the solenoid, i burnt up a starter, which is now replaced, and i also replaced my magneto stator as well because the fly wheel mangled all the wires, and which i thought was causing my grounding wire to spark. i also changed my starter solenoid as well, twice just to see if it was a bad solenoid. it happened while trying to wire up my shift indicator and thats when all the problems started. I've checked forums and some of them said to look through the wiring, which i have done front to back already and the wiring is good, and i changed all of those components. I've even changed all my power and grounding wires as well and still, my starter solenoid grounding wire keeps sparking. i don't put it on i just touch it to ground and automatically it sparks. If you have encountered anything like this and have a solution to it im all ears, thank you

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey SeRReAL6, I was looking at the starting solenoid coil circuit for my Hammerhead and it might be what U have on Ur wire harness.... Basically, one side of the starting solenoid is directly powered from the battery, the key switch and then the starter button are in series and the provide the other side of the coil a path to ground which energies the coil and engages the starter.... Kind of backwards to my thinking, but, my hammerhead is like that and it kind of describes what U have.... I hope this helps, thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!!

    Just stumbled upon this video as I recently bought a taotao 124cc for my son. Had it running great and then it started spitting and sputtering so I got a new carb unlike the Chinese one where you cant access the float without drilling. Anyways didnt fix the problem. I'm noticing excess fuel coming out of choke side and I've adjusted carb every way I know how. I'm thinking either a sticking intake valve on compression or could a bad cdi box cause such a weak spark that it's not burning all the fuel in the chamber? All I know is it backfires out muffler and carb which says valves to me but also I've got way too rich a mixture and my plug is black. Thanks for any help!

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey VIP!!! I think Ur intake valve is adjusted too tight, U need to loosen it up a bit and it will probably start right up... U should adjust the exhaust valve as well.... For the China stuff and the old machines that I'm running, I tend to run with the valves on the looser side.... I rather hear them tap than have them too tight and have them burn a valve drop one for over heating!!!! I hope this helps, Ur first instincts about the valves are probably right.... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!

    • @HarveySpooner
      @HarveySpooner  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Stephanie! On these China Quads, turning on the key switch normally sends power to the left hand grip switches where the start button and the light switches are, I'm thinking messed up switches there or someplace around there the wire harness rubbed off and there is a short from (+) 12Volts DC to frame or ground... I hope this helps.... Thanks for asking, watching, and commenting!!!
