no
They don't know anything about it LOL
Highly interesting! Get the pony motor running and engaging and then she will be a runner! Cant wait to see you guys back at her again!
I just admire your determination to try and figure out how things work and bring an old machine back to life if possible. Your journeys make my day.
Thank you
I also liked the comment to diesel creek, mat
I am 60 and I been on heavy equipment since I started crawling like a baby
But I restore antique farm tractors and equipment and construction equipment.
I have brought back a Northwest dragline with a 371 Detroit engine, that hasn't been started in 30 yrs, and the only way to it is winter ground frozen.
But got it running and I have 1/4 mile to drive it before the frost goes out here in mille lacs lake Minnesota
Have you made a follow up on this yet?
I’ve owned dozers all my life, I grew up helping dad pay the farm off when I was only 9 years old running an old “cable eight” we called it, a D-8 Cat Crawler Dozer essentially, and we always had problems with the old dry pins and bushings seizing up if it sit only for a week, in rain and bad weather, that last time we moved it a couple years ago, it had been sitting for nearly 20 years, and I was successful in getting them broken loose using off road diesel fuel, just like we did in the old days. It’s far more expensive now, then it was back in 1999, when it was last worked around the farm, but it still worked all the same. It has a very low time UC like that as well, and all we would do is put off road diesel (ORD) road diesel (RD) would be the same science, just ORD is a little cheaper. Lol. Just put some in a garden sprayer, pump it up and saturate all the pens over and under then let it sit all night, come back in the next morning and do it again then, when you get it moving, it should be free, or very pretty easily. Then once you get it working, stop and spray the pins down every now and then with diesel fuel, then eventually, you will get them working really well. Just don’t let your friends at the EPA know you are doing that. 😜
wonderful life. thank you for the life stories.
These ole huge pieces of iron are iconic they were used to build many of the highways and roads we use today... definitely need that pony motor to turn that beast over...be amazing to see you guys get it running. Appreciate you sharing your day with us 😎👨🔧😮🇺🇸😇
It turns, that's a hopeful sign that it's not locked up. I'd definitely be interested in seeing this one again and see if it will crank. Thanks for sharing, Hank!
Good Morning Gentleman , it is great to see you again today and I hope you are having a fantastic weekend , Sirs 😊 !
I wish I could be there to help you with this one, it would be right up my alley. I had a D7 3T with same starting system, a lot to figure out without a manual but your are getting there. Hope you come back to it. I wish I could talk you thru it.
Yeah, we are going back to it for sure. The owner has gotten some new parts and such for it already. Thanks for watching!
I can c some broken writ here with that pony motor be careful they can brake ya wrist like u blinking
Thanks!
Thank you!
Two barrel ford carb fits. Used on old 7 pony motor. Worked good. Off old ford 6.
Good luck guys keep warm an safe out there buddy's
I wouldn't worry about a carburetor or anything else until cranking the little pony engine gets figured out, whatever got both the pony and main engine turning might be the key. This sure is a learning experience, I've never seen a starter motor that doesn't have any kind of bendix on it to engage the motor pinion to the flywheel, please do a follow up on this so we see how everything works, this is very interesting 🙂
One of my great uncles worked for caterpillar in perioa Illinois for over 30 years.sadly he passed a few back.
Hey Hank, hi Wily. Hank keep stocking that “Service Truck”👍👍👍👍
its good that you talk about what you see, then view your video to see what is next, then make a plan to get it going, wise thing to do watching from nova Scotia Canada keep up the videos keep safe, and bless you all
hey Hank tell Jacob he doing a great job with wiley ,stay safe gentle men
Damn what a machine! Please please PLEASE revisit this one! The old girl needs to be revived for sure
Thanks Hank and Wylie now every time I check the oil on my car “oh ya this things making oil” hahaha great video guys👍👍👍
That pony motor has a magneto that makes the spark. You have to make sure that is working and they have the intake for the carb upside down. I have been starting old cat engines since I was a kid with pony motors and I have run many old D8s
THE CONDENSER IN THE MAG. LIKES TO GO BAD, OF COSRSE NO SPARK .
First of all , the dc starter was only designed to start the 2 cylinder pony motor , if the pony motor has good compression and tuned good it does fairly well starting the diesel motor , if the pony motor isnt maintained well , you have big problems in the winter . I`ve worked around several cable blade 8`s and ran 1 a little , they were a tough , good dozer .
Man do I luv these videos... they aways her me get my day started! Thanks guys....❤
Love to see this old D8 roar again. Great video from you and Wiley, part 2 coming soon maybe?
The pony gets spark from a magneto the hand crank is like the old farmall tractor so if there is no spark from the mag the pony won’t start
the bendix is on spiral splines and throws out when starter turns. governor wont go over idle until oil pressure is obtained
I think 🤔 it will run 🏃 Hank you and Wiley are able to make it work and push dirt again have a good day
One lever is decompression, the other lever is your bendix. Hold the bendix and decompression levers at the same time in order to build oil pressure in the diesel before releasing the decompression lever and keeping the bendix engaged.
So this mochine has a starter to start another starter to start the engine?
Take some old rags or newspapers along and stuff them in the cavities around the components you're working on.That way you don't drop tools and bolts into bellypans that aren't accessible. It prevents those impromptu magnet fishing expeditions .You don't always get your tools back.
I had the opportunity of running one and doing the same thing your doing .it was an original doder the pushed the Alaska road with I was a teenager.good work guys
Thanks for another great video Hank and Wiley.
It proves to be an interesting project.
I know nothing about those pony motors except they were hard to run. This one had set for years. You may be getting into a project that is not going to work.
Will be anxious to hear how you came out on this one.
Would like to see you both tackle something that you have a better chance on.
Best of luck on this one.
The Iowa farm boy. Steve.
Thank you
There is a video out there that does start it with the pony motor. I think you have to turn in one direction only.
Hey we need updates on this d8 it's very interesting and I would love to see yall get this Ole girl running again
I believe it'll help it out majorly and help improve compression to. Along with freeing up the sticking rings inside of those cylinders to. That pony engine starter may need overhauling really good to. Like bushings re- greased that nut is the adjustment for the flywheel pressure plate engagement release. I'd use some pre-treated ethanol free gasoline fuel in that setting up pony engine to help out with cleaning out that updraft carburetor needle and jets to. It's also called A flow jet carburetor to.
Hank, Even though I enjoy the banter and wealth of knowledge you share with Wily, I still prefer the videos with your granddaughters. I envy the close relationship yall have. I've seen their dad in some of your videos but not their mom. I'd like to see the whole clan. TG Incidentally, I'm older than either of you. 82
She's been in several in the past. Maybe we'll talk her in to getting in a few more
One barrel not two. Carter motorcraft 70599. Fit right nice. Still using on pony motor.
Yeah, come back to this one. Get the carb and see if the original operator will come out and assist you guys. I'd love to see it start and if it'll move.
If you can get the pony motor to spin you can use starter fluid to get it to pop off and then use a spray bottle with gas in it to keep it running you don’t need a carburetor it will make your life much easier if you can get it going
Anytime one of those starters does that the Bendix is stuck take it off and free it up
Before the crowbar was invented, crows had to drink at home.😅😅😅
Lol
Reminds me of my home town Alabama hank and Wiley are at it again I love it love it Roscoe get them Hamilton farms boys ok boss
Hank quit picking on Wily, he's my hero.😂😂😂
Very good job and God bless y'all and y'all can get it running
Thank you
These old heads are great. They’ll get it started before 2040
Hank and Wiley did you check the block for a place to put a regular starter. I know some of the older cat track loaders had them.
Man a weedeater with a blade for that small brush would work great.
Nothing like a 5 degree January morning when the pony goes from caching caching to put put vroom.
I would think you would need to git the starter to turn over the engine first. So the ring gear on the flywheel bad ? I betting that would not be fun to change
Thanks guys another awesome vid!!!
bendix drive spring has failed . Its a one pc unit on the end of the starter shaft. Lots of casr tractors and other units used it Many different types. Cant wait to see this run!
Lol!! Wiley and his " pole cat" 😂😂
BEAUTIFUL Old Iron! WOW!
D9 cable lift dozers are just as fun .some have dual exhaust pipes.there beast and the will push hard.
Love to see a part 2 Hank. I appreciate the videos, buddy 👍
привет!
Иногда смотрю ваши видео - спасибо вам!
Go back after you grab a carb and than take that d8 around the toolshed 😊you guys got this Remember the mack you got this never give up !,
Hank and Wylie this one was a losing battle for it even started , no carb and plug wires for the pony motor no chance but great try Matt from diesel creek sure could have helped but great video thanks
Diesl creek did have extra parts for pony . Sure he would help if possible .
@@carrollfranklin9807 Matt would probably try to buy it lol 🤣
You could start with a pull, put it in a high gear,. Make sure the engine is turning in the right direction which can change with forward reverse laver.
@@kevinbyrne1677 not on a cat you would need a much larger vehicle to start it that way
And now i dont need to watchthe video... thanks a lot
I cant believe you hank and wily dont know about a donkey motor.
They sound like there gonna die.but that's when there building power . truly amazing tractors.
9:18 am Saturday the 13th , my time here in AZ !
You will have to pull it to start and it takes a strong tractor to pull it fast enough to kick over. We always let the blade down on a block to hook a chain butt sometimes my father in law would forget. If you dig a trench under blade then run chain under and hook up high on tractor, chain will lift blade when you tighten up chain to pull it just dont let chain go slack real fast
Hi Guys, you should colab with Matt from Diesel Creek. He has done some of these with the ponies. 😎
I owned that model dozier it takes 12 volt to starter you can run chain under blade there is big hook pull it off with tractor dozier start mine several times buy pulling it off
Hi, Folks.
That is NOT a D8H. Best guess - 13A series, built from 1953 to 1955. The clue is the fuel tank extension coming forward on the right side.
Wouldn't it be nice if they 'ackshully' KNEW what they were doing. For a start, that electrical system would be SIX volts for the starter on the pony motor, NOT 24 'jolts' like they thinking.
Then the lever ahead of the starter pinion housing engages the starter pinion as well as activating the starter switch.
Did they check ANY fluids before trying to 'make noise'???????
Still, HATZOFF to 'em for having a go and trying to save the old girl.
Just my 0.02.
You all have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.
you are correct 1953 13A, I own it 😝
Adoro trator de esteiras 😊
this ia a 1953 D8 Pusher Tractor ...has a No.25 CCU
my grandfather after he retired still did jobs operating digging ponds and such, but he had a really old d6 with a pony I used to go with him to go around with a grade stick. he never really said much or explained what he was doing. I can say this that machine had way too many levers going on considering it only had a blade that went up and down. I think that's why I never rode around with him, or he didn't want me that close idk.
I'd pull out the injectors and pour some ATF marvel mystery oil down into the cylinders to pre- soak the engine cylinder's with A while. Then put the injectors back in it after removing them to add in the pre-soaking solutions. Let it set inside of the engine. until you can make it back out there to it again. To try it out by either removing the injectors to turn the engine over to clear out each cylinder and put the injectors back in one by one.
Hank the starter comes off very easy there is one big bolt that acts like a set screw of what I saw it is next to the engine turn that one bolt out and pry the starter BACK WARDS I wish I could talk to you while you are there and give you some help thank you AL
Black snake or king snake gives off the smell of a skunk.😊
OH well , I was hoping to see it running . Waiting for part 2
I believe you can make it work
If you could hear me yelling at the TV, I am telling you what to do😂😂😂
😁👍
Hank That D8 doesn't have a Pony motor, 20 years ago in Bethel Conn , a Friends father had a D8 cable lift Its Now in a Museum, But I guest that machine isn't that old, His was from the 40's, His Machine started right up after 25 years of sitting, Pony motor carb had to be cleaned but thats it. Huge machine, Maybe it was a D9, can't remember.
Aint no skunk boys...its a BOOGER
Just for future stuff hank you don’t need a carburetor. A spray bottle with gas does the same thing as a carburetor. Except you gotta keep spraying the hell out a it 😂.
Red armor two stroke motor oil and zinc additives and ethanol free gasoline for that stuff is A game changer. STA- BIL fuel treatment fuel stabilizer and injector cleaner is to Hank.
It's a shame i don't live down there! I could bring the little massey by with the grapple and get that mess cleared out in no time so you could work on it.
Cool vidéo ❤❤❤
More on this please
Use the handcrank on the pony motor to rotate the flywheel until the starter motor gear aligns. 🤔
what was the name of music at the start of vid
Always love your music the best
Probably need a better or new pony motor to start with??😮😮
I'd add that to your tool box tool kit list of stock and use items especially these times and Days now. If you know what I mean by that to? Where going to end up needing all of the older equipment and machinery that's still around up and running more every Day.
You can only do that with a Ram👍👍👍
Boa noite Muito ótimo serviço máquina meu amigo
Wat fun you hav Boys.I viss i vas der.Good look. From Jörgen in Västervik Sweden.
An hours worth of jaw-jabbering 😂.
Parte 2 plz❤❤❤❤
wadn no pole cat..lol ....yuns was too close ta somebodys patch of devils lettuce! lol
i'm sure matt just uses a sthyl saw + a big drive belt, give him a ring
Great video you all sure gave it a good try thanks Hank and Wily and to the other man I forgot his name sorry
Thanks
You gentlemen need to get your self a power washer whole lot easier to see problems an not contaminate the motors with dirt and debree.
OK , I will guess that the pony motor is stuck ! 😭 You will have to take the pony OFF and disassemble it , repair the pony , get it running on a stand then put it back on the dozer. These dozers take about 10 minutes of cranking to build HEAT & FUEL & OIL pressure . Watch DESIEL CREEK D8 videos . avoid his mistakes . Great no start video ? thanks
Awesome 😎
That’s a 2U series D8
Beautiful creatures like that D8 should never be let go to that stage ,respect for your machine or get off it, I hate to see the likes of this machine in this terrible condition
It's 6 volts or 12 volts
You need the pony motor running in order to fire the cat engine
Didn’t,t the Old Cats have positive ground.? It would explain why starter won’t engage
