Seafoam--can't believe what it did to my engine part 2--throttle body clean!!

  • Seafoam provided some amazing results. In this video, I remove the throttle body to clean it to smooth out the idle. A look inside the intake manifold provides proof that seafoam dissolved the carbon build up it contacted as if flowed into the engine.

I have used sea foam 2 yrs ago and Lucas oil additive with every oil change. At the time of adding the sea foam I thought the engine was near dead, surprisingly it has out lasted my own expectations as it turned over 179000 miles with no major work done. Impressive stuff!

Hey man. Thanks a ton! I was down to 4 and a half cylinders. Have an 89 2.9 thAt has been abused here on the farm. Long story short, hitting on all 6 and the truck made 70mph for the first time in 10 years. It is the welding truck here on the farm and for the last few years it has been driven maybe 25 miles a year and it wouldn’t make 45-50mph - be proud of your hood liner, the mice made breakfast out of mine. Thanks again worked like a charm

It's amazing how these "add in" products have changed and become better and better over the years. The stand-by's used to be Slick 50 (which I used) and STP. The products they offer today really do work miracles on these high millage engines. I watch all of the videos on this truck as a series, it's so satisfying to hear and see the miraculous changes that happen to that ol' girl! High millage engines can benefit greatly from these types of treatments, if you do them in accordance with the manufacturers suggestions. Great experiment with great results! A man dedicated to keeping it runnin! That's the point, you can keep them running much longer if you take care of them!

Howdy, about 15 yrs ago I received a 1988 ford ranger with front end damage, and wouldn't idle. I did exactly what you did and the results were extremely acceptable. I also noticed the idle screw had backed off slowly over time, so I returned it to the position set from the fsctory. (paint marks lined up on screw)

Sea foam is great stuff! I had a 97 dodge Dakota with a persistent misfire that would not go away after a full tune up and an injector. Poured a can of sea foam in the engine through the throttle body and left it soak, when the smoke cleared, no misfire!

One of the things I do to keep the fuel system clean. I'll fill the tank and add a quart of diesel fuel to a FULL tank of gas. I'll do that after every oil change so at least 4 times a year. the diesel acts as a solvent and cleans everything. I've had a problem with a 97 Chevy 5.7 liter running sluggish and idling rough. I had just got the truck and hadn't treated the fuel yet. A quick fill up and quart of diesel and drove to work. Within 5 miles of interstate driving she cleared right up and ran super smooth. I've never had a problem using the diesel fuel and its a quick cheap additive.

I have a 82 F100 4.9 carb'd. It sat for over 10 years. I thought for sure I'd have to rebuild the carb, but I tied seafoam first. Worked like a champ. I've done maintenance items - cap/rotor/plugs but seafoam really did a fantastic job on my truck. Caveat being my truck only had 38k miles (original) at the time, daily driver now with 43k and still runs like a champ, even in the -20's we had a couple weeks ago.

Just subscribed out of Texas,I'm glad I stumbled upon your first video in this series....I have a '99 chevy Silverado with the 5.3 vortec engine...and when you first crank it it does fine...when you put it in gear shortly after and hit the gas it hesitates bad....I hooked an obd2 reader to it and it threw a mass airflow sensor code....which is very close to the throttle body....so I'm gonna give the seafoam a shot....love the videos and keep up the good work.

I had a similar problem as this. I am taking it as that the butterfly slightly sticks and leads to the overly fueled combustion charge. I do not exactly believe the carbon build up is the issue, due to flow, as it is the making the air valve stick (plus unanticipated choking at idle). A transient type condition, if you will. The cleaning is very helpful. Some of the sticking problem may have been from too much oil (my fault) on the K&N air filter.

You can use it to clean the Intake as well. If no spray can just put a little bit of the liquid seafoam in a cup. Remove a vacuum hose and let it suck out a little at a time. use various different vacuum hoses in different locations pcv, break booster, etc on intake to help clean all around, I have been using seafoam and Lucas for years. Another great product is Marvel Mystery oil( MMO) been around since 1920 something . Have to be doing something right to still be around after all those years! Seafoam In engines makes a fun way to smoke out the neighbors vehicle will poor out white smoke cleaning up carbon. In regards to your first video with KOEO using spray can hold throttle plate open and spray all around and back into intake to help clean carbon build. If you have an EGR remove and clean as well.

Sounds just like the Jeep inline 6 I had. People used to make comments “man i love the way your Jeep sounds. You’re doing your maintenance”. Only used marvel mystery oil a couple times, but used seafoam and restore and Lucas stabilizer in the oil every oil change. Used seafoam and Lucas injector cleaner in gas tank. Techron a couple of times.
Did sea foam in the throttle body a couple times.

  • @Brady.John87
    @Brady.John87 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

the thin long red nozzle on the seafoam is made to slip under the hose and be sprayed into a closed system (that's why it has that curve, it slips under the hose and sprays in the direction of the intake) not be sprayed into the intake without the hose placed back on the housing. it breaks the spray up and atomizes the liquid to an extent for even coating and cleaning

I thought it was for engines that have mass airflow sensors. You don't want to spray this across the sensor and the engine won't run without the intake tube being sealed. Because that engine doesn't have a MAF sensor you can spray it directly in the throttle. I doubt this stuff will atomize even if you seal the red nozzle in the intake tube.

Interesting series of practical and simple tests. A before and after tach reading might yield a bit more data ... and a burette and stop watch would give a simple comparative test to measure viscosity of motor oil a bit more accurately than rubbing it between your fingers ... but you are doing a good job as is. Keep up the good work and don't let the doubters get you down. Subscribed.
BTW ... I always splash on a little MMO or Hoppes #9 after I shave. The ladies LOVE it!

I can't really say because it's just something I've always done. I've never used it as a "fix" so to speak, I've just always used it more as a "preventive maintenance" type thing. All my vehicles ranging from 2000 to 2005 all have well over 100,000 miles and all still run great. Standard maintenance (oil changes, coolant flushes as well as standard tranny maintenance) and engines still run smooth and efficiently in their respective mileage range so I can't say mileage is improved but I can say their mileage range is met per gpm.

Liquid tuneup! Used this as all the time at a Chrysler shop. 360s had a terrible problem with the heat riser cross-over in the intake manifold carboning up. Sometimes only removing the manifold and chiseling out the carbon would work.

just what this video shows it cleans out your fuel system. you put it into your crank case it loosens up sludge deposits. by all means these are not "quick fixes" but added to your regular vehicle maintenance it will help and prolong certain parts on your engine. and it helps cut back on maintenance cost I think. I run a big block 460 in my DD they day I got it it had codes pop up that the egr valve was plugged and probly a plugged injector ran 3 treatments of seafoam threw no more codes. what alot of people don't realize is that the fuel we burn today has alot of ethanol in it. and it's killer on our older vehicles

I see your plug has a typical broken clip which you had a zip tie on. You can also put a Dab of high temp silicone if you worry about the zip tie moving. The silicone will hold it in place (after it sets up) and when you want to unhook it again, you just scrape off the silicone :)High temp Orange or RTV black work best..........

I have a 1994 Chevy Silverado extra cab with a simple 350ci, I've been using Seafoam and Lucas fuel system treatment in it for nearly 20yrs now, I've just turned 235,000 miles on the "ORIGINAL ENGINE AND TRANS" the truck runs like a top.
I believe one of the contributing factors to the engines longevity, is that I have an 8 into 1 header system, and removed the constricting worthless catalytic destroyer from the exaust.
Recently after about 8,000 mi I put new plugs, wires, cap etc...May God strike me down if I'am fibbing, the plugs had "ZERO" carbon fouling on them, although the electrodes were a bit worn, with the combination of "Seafoam and Lucas" I use at every fill up, those two products certainly live up to its name.
Thanks for all you do,keep up the great work, your video series containes a wealth of information.

Eric, I am very familiar with the truck design that you have and I believe it's one of the most reliable engines on the planet! I really like the TBI powered 350s. I had one a few years older than the one you had and it was finally sold at 275,000 miles without engine or transmission issues. Your strategy for keeping the engine healthy is a great one! You'll get many more miles out of the truck! Thank you very much for watching the video and commenting!

Project Farm: I agree with the TBI system, I have as of yet had to rebuild it. One thing I left out in regards to the engine. I also substitute one quart of semi- synthetic oil with a quart of "HY-PERLUBE" it's regularly available here on the west coast, O'Reilly, Auto zone, pep boys, Wal-Mart etc....by chance have you tried or experimented with HY-perlube? in MY opinion it's "NECTAR OF THE GODS"....lo, it helps retain the oils viscosity. In my neck of the woods, summertime can reach as high as 115°+ brutal summers.
Thank you for your time in reply.

In addition you might want to add the gas treatment monthly, add the oil additive with every oil change, and clean the throttle body annually. Along with normal air filter and tuneup you will be set.

unfortunately, about a month and a half ago I made the mistake of spraying throttle body cleaner in the throttle body with the engine running. After that my truck developed a rough idle. I've tried everything to try and fix it: I did the relearn procedure for the idle, I changed the spark plugs, I checked for vacuum leaks and with no success. My truck runs great, it just idles poorly when coming to a stop light.

Might have some crap stuck in your iacv. Get access to the TB and see if you can see the bypass galleries. Spray some brake cleaner up in there and run a Q tip in if you can too. Even better if you can remove the iacv and clean it and the housing it sits in. Just be careful to not spray too much stuff in if doing it on car with the engine off.

1970 olds442 just fair warning, if you drink it, expect really bad gas for 2-7 minutes. there may be a little smoke too, but this is normal.
since the seafoam has just renewed your digestive system to brand-new, you need to drink breast milk and eat baby food for the first year or so, then you can slowly introduce yourself to solid foods again.

I used to use Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner to clean carburetors and throttle bodies. It does a great job cutting carbon and rarely did I have to remove the throttle body to clean it. It also cuts carbon on your pistons and valves. Very similar to how you used Seafoam, spray it in a running engine, let sit overnight and run it until the smoke stops. Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner has been around since the 1980s and should be available from your local Dodge Chrysler dealer.

Thank you for these two videos! I'm looking for ways on top of normal maintenance that I can "add" some extra help to keep my 2004 F-250 5.4L running for as long as it can because the truck means a lot to me and its only got 95,000 miles. It's got plenty of life but its also at the age where its vulnerable to problems due to poor maintenance. Such as how many 5.4Ls end up shooting sparkplugs through their hoods because they're so far down in the bay and are hard to reach, therefore, many people don't feel like changing them. Doing that one as soon as warmer weather hits because I don't have a garage to do so.
I'm going to start doing some high mileage treatment, such as adding Seafoam to the oil before an oil change as you did in this video because the oil looked like it had quite a bit of removed Carbon in it. Then in the gas for the tank, pump, injectors, and etc. It'll be nice doing that before an oil change for me because I already use only full synthetic and change my oil and filter every 3,000 - 4,000 miles; My oil will be well clean enough to test and see how much Carbon comes off in a change when the time rolls around. I found it funny because you used the same Lucas Oil that I just used in my recent oil change about 500 miles ago as well.
Really, thanks though for testing these and putting them up here. You go into a store and it's a huge wall of things that are all like "oh yeah, I work the best", but you can figure right off the bat that they probably don't because that's all advertising is. It's just overwhelming and while I know many who have tried Seafoam for a long time and verified that it's tried and true, I didn't know how exactly I wanted to do it. I didn't even know I could add it to oil, but that's a great thing I learned from this video. Just thanks, once again!

I don't know exactly what vehicles were fitted with EGRs but with the level of carbon build up in the intake, it may have it. Either that or you have a lot of blow by and the crank case vents recirculating back into the intake. either way, for future prevention. I'd suggest a catch can for the crank case breathing and an EGR bypass to prevent exhaust gases recirculating back through too.

Felix Liew , truly amazing at how differently vehicles last and perform!
I have a 1995 Toyota Camry that had been treated very well by first and second owners , then I got ahold of it at about 195K, and the abuse began. Change the oil filter NAYBE once every 20K, add oil as needed (maybe 1qt. Every 3K miles). Alternate adding some Marvel Mystery Oil every so often, it's got 423,571 as of yesterday's drive home from work. Original engine and transmission! No internal repairs ever, replaced the head gasket ONLY ( no valve seals etc.) at 257,000, for a common oil leak problem. Go to "bad Camry Harry" and scroll to the video I posted titled 'bad camry'. The car sees this kind of treatment almost every day.
That video was recorded when I left work one day, just after it had turned 400K. Every 4-5th tank of gas is a brand name 'premium', that is my substitute for any kind of fuel additive.
Original injectors, A/C compressor, on its 7th t-belt and water pump.i could go on, I'm so cheap with this car, I squeak, but the car doesn't!
No good reason for either the engine or trans. ( which has been serviced-drain & fill-- only twice, never flushed) to have not blown up by now!!
Thanks for the video, project farm!

Great videos! Thanks. What do you think about the Seafoam treatment for an older diesel tractor engine?

    • @ProjectFarm
      @ProjectFarm  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think a SF treatment in an older diesel is fine, but there are special instructions on how to use it to avoid a runaway engine. In other words, one can't just spray it into the intake or the engine will rev up out of control, possibly causing engine damage.
