Putting in a 1qt oil accumulator i.e. pre-lube system does wonders for start ups. Flip of a switch it charges the system then oil pressure fills the accumulator back up in a few seconds then you turn it off. Their also great on 4x4 trucks as you can set the pressure for them to release oil if the oil pressure drops below a set point when pulling a hill or off camber driving. Thats the automatic system. Either way pressurized oil on initial start is not a bad idea. I use them on everything as I have some cars that sit for extended periods. Everyone sells them, Summit,Jegs, Ebay ect. Along with a remote filter to make it easy to gain access that system is worth its weight in gold. If you have oil sprayers like the new Hondas you'll even have some oil on the cylinder walls before starting.

Your warning about replacing the oil filler cap struck home, also the old adage that too many cooks spoil the soup. Four of us, all pilots, were flying from Colorado to Baja for a week of camping on the beach. We were flying a Cessna 182 which is a nice four person ship. We were running on a tight schedule so we were doing a rush job when we stopped for fuel and clearance into Mexico. One person took care of topping the tanks with fuel, one checked the oil, one went to the restaurant to pick up food and the other one took care of customs and flight plan. We hit it like a pit crew at a NASCAR race and were soon headed for the runway. Just as we passed the departure end of the runway, the windshield was coated with a spray of oil. A fast 180 and landed downwind. A quick check found the problem.... the guy who added a quart of oil had forgotten to replace the oil cap. Fortunately the oil caps on airplane engines are attached with a chain or the cap would have been someplace in the weeds.

  • @dapoppa2256

You are absolutely correct!! Most people never keep up with the oil service. I do mine before 5000 miles, and my engines run like new. I also recommend doing all fluids every few years, I live in the deep south, and all of those fluids are beat after a few summers. Do you recommend doing the Blackstone lab oil test? The main thing is when I sell my trucks I have a three ring binder showing the services I have done, and I tend to get my full asking price when selling.. Thanks for the good tips Scotty!!!

Scotty, I have a 2AR-FE engine that makes that noise during startup. I believe there is a TSB on it too. I’ve changed the oil according to Scion’s specified intervals, and only use full synthetic oil. 138k miles. Sound doesn’t go away, even after a brand new oil change. According to the TSB, fixing the issue requires replacing the VVT-i cam sprockets (intake and exhaust). I don’t have a low oil pressure light ever turning on. Should I just live with the issue? I plan on driving the car for as long as possible, never selling it. I could try to replace the sprockets myself...but not sure if worth the effort. Bought brand new on January 2011.

I pulled the plug and chunks of oil came out. It was ugly. I did an complete engine flush and then put in some high quality oil. Problem solved. Then I gave her a mild scolding. Cars are just too dang expensive to not, at the minimum, change the oil every 5K. And don't be cheap!! Use good oil and filters!!

I have found that when removing tight bolts an 18v impact driver works as a good alternative to a breaker bar. I had a sump plug that wanted to slip rather than loosen, my impact drive made short work of it.
I little trick my father taught me when pouring oil from a large container was to turn it sideways, this allows air to enter container and makes the oil pour smoothly.

I had a similar problem on my 2014 4 cylinder Camry SE that I bought used with around 40,000 miles. I changed the oil (and filter) with a quality synthetic several times but the oil always came out very dark. The clatter started to get loud around 55,000 miles. I thought the prior owner may have skipped oil changes causing sludge buildup in the engine. So I performed motor oil flush before I changed my oil. The cold start clatter improved considerably after several more oil/filter changes over the next 18 months. I also noticed my oil remains clean much longer and never comes out black like it did when I bought the car.

I’m not sure if they did away with low oil/check oil lights but my 09 Camry dosent have one. I happened to check oil and stick was bone dry. The oil wasn’t due to be changed either. Toyota had a huge class action suit for knowingly using defective pistons/rings in my motor and other models for several years. The dealer would only replace pistons/rings if it failed oil consumption test. I made sure it failed and fixed for free in 2018. If I hadn’t checked the oil, it could have ruined motor. All isn’t great with Toyota. My next car is a Honda Ridgeline or single cab 4x4 F-150 ifI can find one.

I had to reverse the return springs in the brake assembly on the front two parts, where the pads are bolted to the arm where the cable pulls. One end of the spring 90 degree bend is longer than the other, and it kept popping out of the arm, causing imbalance on one side, causing that side to rub the wheel. Reversing them solved the problem.....you may also drill a hole under the main crank, on bike frame, and install a grease nipple. Pump it full of grease, as this will displace water......etc.

We have a Chevy Malibu that always makes this noise with cold start up and we always use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, or Mobil 1 extended performance and the cold start ups are always rough with only 80k miles!

I have a third generation 4 Runner with 113K miles. I recently took it to firestone for an oil change, but they drained the oil and forgot to refill. After driving it for approximately 30 miles, I looked at the dipstick and realized it was bone dry. No significant noises from the engine. We were getting ready to sell the vehicle for 10K. What do you all recommend we do? Thank you in advance.

i need feedback from you all as one of my friends had purchased a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee 2021, SRT (now it has 12k miles) but it has so many issues for the past year or so. It stalls in the middle of the freeway at 70mph and breaks won't deploy as the electronics shut down. It stops/stalls basically everywhere and you have to tow to the closest Dodge dealer and they have no clue to fix this issue. None of these occasions the check engine light came up. When you hear the engine before it dies off you can hear as if there is a massive air leak or something. Any advice would be great. What a waste of $75K.

Am commenting from Nairobi Kenya. I recently took my Nissan Skyline 250Gt for an oil change to quick fit Centre. I was quoted for 7lit of oil and an oil filter. When I queried that the handbook mentions that the oil required is 4.8 lit, they quickly mentioned that they thought it was a Skyline GTR. So you see scams are worldwide

Hi Scotty. Please help. I have a 2004 Highlander V6 3.3L AWD with 300,000 KMS. My engine is toast. Oil light came on and a bad knocking sound started happening. I was told it's not the oil pump. It's the bottom end of the engine. I've been advised not to replace the engine ($2500 US) because the transmission has a lot of milage on it. Should I say bye or give it a try? Body is in great shape and underside has some rust as I live in Canada. Thanks Scotty! Love your vids!
