Crazy thing.... just found your earbud on the north loop. Sent you and email... Thanks for the great video, we appreciate your time and effort to post them!
Frozen, I live in Ohio, thank for visiting our wonderful state! I hunt southern Ohio, glad you got to experience the hills lol, they are no joke! Love your channel. I stumbled across your AT trip. Very humbling! Thanks for sharing all that you do! Keep trailing and God Bless you!
I really cant wait to get out and doing stuff like this in the spring! i dont have any money to get going any time soon, times are tough. but the channel has got me out and about checking out a bunch of little day hikes around pa!
Pack-It Gourmet meals are killer! We took them exclusively for a week in the BWCA this summer and everyone was impressed. Both by the variety and the excellent flavors.
Despite the rain it still looked like a good and fun trip. Honestly your pack liner idea looks like it fills the pad faster then a pump sack. For chafing issues I've had good luck using "fresh balls". It's a lotion that dries as a powder.
nice to be in the woods with you.. awesome pond around 24 in in and what a weird snake on the trail wow.. sucks the tent was leaking but you sure make the best of the weather on your way out... looks like a tough enough hike, thanks for taking us with you
I absolutely loved it! I went twice in 2020. The second time was in October and I hiked the south, middle, and north loops collectively. I drove all the way from South Bend, Indiana. I'm coming back to Pennsylvania to hike the Loyalsock trail in late May. I believe it's something like a 56 mile hike. I look forward to it!
Have really enjoyed all your videos. Best backpacking channel I have found! Would love to see the pot koozie and stove tutorial. Getting ready for some week long trips in Utah next year and would love to try them out.
My buddy and I just returned from Shawnee State Forest. We were looking for someplace challenging and your video inspired us to give it a try. We only did the north loop but it was a blast. Lots of ups and downs...any many dry creek beds. Thanks for motivating us to get out there.
If I was going to take somebody new to hiking whom I didn’t like, this is where I would take them. Shawnee is a ball buster. Rainy, hot, and humid it seems regardless spring, summer and fall. Plus they cut the trails with Bobcats sometimes leaving a trail strewn with ankle twisting rocks. Little to no switchbacks and poor trail routing as far as ups and downs go. All that being said, if you’re a true backpacker, the misery of Shawnee holds a special place in your hiking heart. Lol
Shawnee seems a lot like the Knobstone Trail (AKA: Little AT) here in Southern Indiana. Straight up... straight down repeat 1 million times! Good job thank you for taking us along.
Did Knobstone a couple years back. Was not a fun time. Definitely FU hills. The worst part was all the spiderwebs. Had to walk shaking my trekking pole up and down to clear the trail. Plan to do Shawnee next month. Looking forward to being out in the woods again.
That’s why I bought the Altaplex, the Plexamid has had issues with that area leaking for years. As for rain gear I’ve gone to enlighten equipments rain gear.
@@FrozensAdventures, sorry, I used my buddies for a weekend trip. It fits well and didn’t soak thru. I have yet to receive the one I ordered. One thing I did love about it that I’ve had trouble with my vertice is that I have great free movement in it in the arms and shoulders.
Thanks much for the vid. Never heard of a pump sack, and would never have thought of using a pack liner to inflate a sleeping pad. You should seriously consider taking up the bagpipe.
I had that sweat chafing problem in that area as well and I used lotions and baby powder too and athletic underwear but it turned out all I needed was some very skimpy cotton briefs that breathe and gently hold all the right things in all the right places. I haven't had the problem again since.
Love all of your vids! I did want to say that if that's a Gore Tex jacket, it might just need to be washed and dried! That can help keep it in good shape, and activates the DWR that helps keep you dry, but if it rains long and hard enough I'm not sure anything will really keep you dry long term. Rain gear is more to keep you from getting cold. I have rain paints but never once worn them in the rain, the one time I tried they slowed me down too much. I do pull them over my SmartWool leggings and sleep in them occasionally for added warmth! But you probably know all of this, just figured I'd mention it since you said something about your rain gear not keeping you dry. I haven't been on this specific hike, but I have done a decent amount of running in Ohio on the Burning River 100 ultra marathon course (twice) and love those trails! I remember being on the Buckeye trail briefly and vaguely remember it being tough, but fun, lots of up and down.
Nah it's not gortex it's pertex. It's been swapped out for a warranty claim after my AT thru hike. I have a video on how to wash and renew the DWR as well.
@@FrozensAdventures Thanks for responding! I figured you probably knew, but I've also been surprised how many people want to trash or donate a GTX jacket when they notice it not working as well. I had someone offer to give me one once saying they didn't think it still worked, after how much I spent on mine I probably should have just accepted. They are proud of that stuff. I used Frog Togs until I just couldn't stand them anymore,

My Wife's Grand Father worked in the Shawnee Park for close to 25 years. He retired when he was 70. When he was almost 75 we went camping with him. I was only 25 and my wife 21. It is nice to see you out on trips and making videos again. One thing to consider on your conversion to becoming a ground dweller is you don't have to give up your hammock. Switch out the underquilt with your sleeping pad. Now you can use your hammock/tarp/sleeping pad as a hybrid system. It is not ideal, but it works. Sleep on the ground if there are no trees, or hang if you can't find a level spot to sleep on the ground. I pretty much use my tarps exclusively, which I really like because they are waterproof and I feel more connected to the outside than being in a stinkin, leakin, tent.
Thanks Frozen, we’re going Friday and I was nervous about the inclines. Thanks for giving us a point of reference. We’re doing the south loop with a day hike through the wilderness side trail. Thanks for keeping me motivated can’t wait!!

Great to see another video from you again. Always liked your videos. I followed you thru the AT and now look forward to your videos when they come out. Keep on hiking. I'm a bit of a section hiker. Usually once a year for a week or two. Thanks for sharing.
It looked like you were packing up to leave in the middle of the night at first. I'm hitting the BFT next week. Did the CL50 2 weeks ago. Got my system dialed in pretty good now.
Nice 3 day trip. With no notable views it looked like a great section of forest to walk through. I like your trick with the sleeping pad. I have always just used the pump sack but this is great for cutting out an extra item.
I meant to watch this weeks ago. Good stuff Jason. Thank you sir for a generous upload! One of these days I'm going there in Autumn. Let me know if you head back to see the foliage. Shawnee, as you experienced, is hot in summer.
I had wondered how badly affected the Shawnee Trail and other hiking trails were in this immediate area local to me due to the ice storm and winds from late winter ❄️ 2020
I just got the tensor too and was questioning the need for the pump sack. Nice little hack Frozen. I'll be using that during my SMokies SOBO in Novemberrrr
I am just getting my roommate into backpacking and this was one of the first trails I took him on. He is a bigger guy and he is still into it. I also like going with him because he slows my pace down, so I'm not doing 20+ mile days.
Dang, if I had known, would have loved to have met you in my neck of the woods! Your a beast though! Great miles per hour on the toughest, hilliest trail in Ohio. Every time I think about doing it, my car veal’s toward Zaleski! 🤣 Good luck with PCT Prep. I am planning to do a Thru Hike of the Buckeye Trail next Spring. Like you, I am switching to a Tarptent Double Rainbow instead of the Hammock. Yet the hammock would have stayed dry in that rain! PS, It was cool to hear all of your Tramily on Mighty Blue’s Podcast. It is obvious why you all gelled so well. As far as the comparison of Shawnee to the Smokies, I agree, the Smokies are in a class of their own.The fog ruined some of your Views, but there are only about 4-5 of them, so you saw two or three. Remember, the key word is “Little” Smokies. Yet, there are more up and down in Shawnee versus following the ridge of the Smokies once you climb up from the dam and the little gain at Clingmans. Shawnee actually reminds me of the Roller Coaster for some reason. Anyway, as usual, thanks for the great Video.
Did full trail over 2 trips. Took 2 day's for each loop. That trail is a BEAST!!!!
My favorite AT through hiker giving me inspiration for this weekend.

Not too bad surpassingly. If this trail had some creeks it would be awesome, but it is very dry.
Live 5 minutes away. Shawnee is awesome!
Good morning everybody
I'm 85% sure that the water pumps there are city water from Portsmouth, so filtering is unnecessary. I didnt.
Yes but you never know what nasty stuff dies in the water tank.
I guess I just have missed some of your latest videos but what happened to, " I will never ever sleep on the ground or in a tent again!"" ?
I loved thru hiking so much I need to do what I need to do for the PCT.
Hi Frozen, good to see you back on the trails👍 we missed you buddy🌟👍stay safe , be well!
I agree it's definitely more comparable to the roller coaster in VA
Good luck on the Buckeye Trail next year. Just spent this past week doing trail maintenance in the New Straitsville Section.
ripvanracer Actually looking forward to that section of trail! More remote for the a Buckeye.
Another great video! Show us some mud slingin'!
