Great old video. Gt was my 1st sponcer and did alot for me. I changed sponcers a few times in the 80s .I did so for personal gain. This was a day i got 2nd pro .Was about my 3rd contest ever. Life was and is good. I still have a passion for riding today. my you-tube account is rickallison100. thanks to most of you guys so much for all the cool comments n for posting this video of our history in freestyle. you guys rock.
ps ,i had just ridden from San Francisco to huntington beach for this contest. When interviewed the reason i was so pumped up ,and said i would be #1 was cause i was the total underdog. Names like Eddie Fiola ,Martin Aparijo ,Dave Nourie, and on and on were just so awesome of riders. So here i was ,trying to prove myself in an industry run by my idols. So i think now,ya if i didnt know me, id say sounded a bit full of myself. but to be honest, it was a great day and i did ok in the sport from that day on. If i got last today id be proud . I love our sport. Just wanted to clear the air. When opertunity knocks.you can sit and be quiet or stand up for your riding skills as i did here n rock it. thx

Wow.... i guess you were pumped up and stressed at the same time. Adrenaline makes you talk like that at times.... 👍 good stuff!

Im 41 and getting back into it, but I don't think that there will be any respect from most of the punk kids now a days. They don't even know how it all started, or probably don't care. I'll be riding for the love of the sport...again, the way it should be.

It's a shame there isn't this kind of sportsmanship anymore! None of the press seem to want to show guys who arent afraid of telling how they want to be number 1! It's 'i'm just grateful to be here' and 'this is a wonderful oppertunity' bullshit about encouraging kids and stuff nowadays! This is competitive! This is encouraging rivalry! This is how sports should be! 5 stars!

Fatkaw10: I am with you. People riding today don't have the perspective of the 80's.. The Berlin wall was still standing, the Soviet Union was still intact and communist and the U.S. was on an upward economic roll.
At school people wore pink polos with collars up and 100 dollar jeans. Think about that when minimum wage was 3.35 an hour. It was all about success and being "in". Freestyle was a reflection of that mentality. It was all about being more outrageous and more over the top.

Today's BMX bikes, although light and strong really look crap compared to say a classic Skyway, Mongoose, or Redline from the early 80s.

yep, in the mid 80's rick rode for mongoose, he wasnt such a big name, but was still well known enough.

@letsgoflatland I grew up, raced, and rode ramps back then, but we didn't go fully into that style up here in Nor Cal.....and by 1988 the economy and BMX went flat.
