    Consider this: The Tyranids are so numerous and dangerous, the entire galaxy is still getting slowly devoured despite the Tyranids seemingly losing every major battle of worth. All the loses they suffered mean nothing when they outnumber the stars themselves and would just. Keep. COMING.

      To me it is scarier to think they deliberately take on X losses in order to evolve well beyond so that when they do make an actual full push there is no stopping them. Alternatively, they are much smarter than we realize and deliberately allow recovery in order to have a sustainable and continuous source of food.

    The Tyranids are a 40k writer's wet dream: an enemy with no named characters that have to stay alive to sell models and can be beaten by more popular factions ad infinitum without actually losing because they can just pull unlimited reinforcements out of their asses (i.e. deep space)

    • @RedXlV

    • @TheMariusDarkwolf
      @TheMariusDarkwolf ปีที่แล้ว +49

      @@RedXlV The other side of that, is that it does make the Nids seem kinda weak. Like, oooh big scary bugs, blueberry creampuff over there just roflstomps a swarm. In theory the tyranids are a moving ecosystem, adapting at a ludicrous speed and becoming a nightmare you need to deal with before they hit critical mass and steamroll the world. They should have the greatest unit variety of their own, due to rapid genetic engineering and rapid iteration. Unfortunately, making justice to the nightmare they are supposed to be would involve killing or crippling named characters, or at least sending them on the run. Adapting to your enemies weapons? Try adapt to a desintegration ray. Genestelers cult weaken enemies defences beffore invasion? Good luck trying that against a necron population. Sure the nids have numbers on their side as the Necrons are quite fragmented, but the Silent King being back this won’t be a problem for long. Back in the earlier editions the losses were still major but a lot less frequent, and it felt like the Tyranids were a looming threat on a scale that made chaos almost insignificant. But since then more factions have popped up, the Great Rift buffed chaos, and nids feel like they've been left behind. It would be interesting to see them develop trump cards on a similar level to Kronos to face unconventional enemies like the Necrons, and take out some big named named worlds in the lore. Tyranids have always been my favorite. Aliens is my favorite movie of all time and the Tyranids obviously take inspiration from the xenomorphs. I get why the Tyranids aren't a focus. They are a more animalistic xeno species. The hive mind would be fascinating to know more about. But, the lack of understanding of the hive mind and tyranids is also what makes them interesting and horrifying. If to much got explained I feel they would lose much of what makes them work. But, I do wish we could get something. The Death Leaper as all lictors is supposed to be hyper intelligent. Maybe some way of showing the nid pov without losing their mystery. It's a hard nut to crack. One can hope there can be more nid lore, but it has to be so carefully done, if at all.

The problem with this approach is it'll turn the tyranid into orks 2.0 because that's exactly how orks hierarchy works.

      @zrrion6the6insect6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The imperium doesn't care about biomass so it throws guard at stuff and calls it a day. It's only a loss for the imperium if a chapter gets fucked up or a lot of tech is destroyed. The nyds are the other way round though, caring only about biomass. If they eat a dozen worlds that just have average people on them that's a massive W in their books but the imperium might not notice that for at least a century. I imagine the nyds only really care to fuck up imperial worlds w/ named characters on them when those worlds are protecting worlds the nyds actually want.

    If you think about it, even if the Tyranids lost every single engagement they participated in, they'd still be an unimaginable threat. They essentially have limitless reserves, but every other faction is working with a finite point of resources. If the opponent you're fighting keeps losing, but never stops coming, you're eventually going to run out of ammunition, supplies, and troops, and the troops that you do have will be too exhausted to keep fighting. On top of that, all of the other factions are essentially in a race with each other or some other factor. The Tau need more time to secure their holdings, the Drukhari need more torture slaves to hold off Slaanesh, the imperium just needs more time for everything. All the Tyranids have is inevitability. The bulk of their forces have yet to arrive, and when they do, everywhere in the galaxy becomes a front against them.

  • @Rhysavus
    @Rhysavus ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The Tyranids as a faction are in a functional trap story-wise. They're written and maintained to be the galaxy-consuming and infinite threat they deserve to be, but are often pushed back or ignored in the major setting while the "core" factions see their stories advanced. This only ends with the Tyranids destroying everything (not fun for anyone), or with the galaxy pulling out some major plot armor to defeat the Hive Mind when it's been hyped to be both infinite and inaccessible (Probably with the Necrons using something akin to their World Engine).
    Otherwise, the Tyranids will be limited to specific settings (such as being the core antagonist in Space Marine II) and likely end up with a few decisive victories that "cripple" parts of other major factions before having their story pacified to a victory parade across non-important planets to prevent infringement into more interesting interactions between other factions.
    We might be lucky to see something major akin to Macragge being destroyed by the Tyranid invasion in a mutually pyrrhic victory that cripples a major portion of the Hive Fleet, but I doubt we will see Lion face off against them considering he was incapacitated by a psychic attack in the first place (especially when the trailer showcases a Zoanthrope crushing a Librarian so easily).

    I really hope the tyranids get a major rework in terms of models soon. I’m very interested in getting into the hobby, and quite frankly the concept alone of the tyranids is really badass to me, but their models just look goofy for the most part. I feel like they could also receive some sort of narrative update. Even with the hive mind SEEMING bland and incapable of nuance writing wise, I think there is a way to give the hive mind some sort of relatable personality, or at least something interesting about it. Maybe a mother type of personality, that cares deeply for the survival of it’s children, or something of that sort. Also even though a hive mind is typically thought of as a sort of singular consciousness, with no room for deviation in an individual’s thought process, I feel like there are a lot of interpretations of a hive mind that could be explored. Do they truly ALL think EXACTLY the same in the hive mind? Even if we just get a sort of pheromone interpretation of individual tyranids interacting with each other, like ants do in real life, I think that would be cool! Maybe they could be like bees, where they dance to communicate, or something to that effect. Even bees can be charming and interesting despite their supposed lack of intelligence. I think them all being one giant connected psychic consciousness could still be explored in a number of neat ways, even if I personally couldn’t give any examples of that. Basically I can feel the potential for the tyranids, and I want to see them fully realized as a faction!

    The Cryptus shield worlds and Gryphonne IV are both good examples of Tyranids totally curbstomping the Imperium.

    Bro did Majorkill just do the worlds most subtle diss on Sneako/the Sneako drama with that opening Cuties remark? Fantastic

    While I don't really enjoy painting nids that much (and I've never played them for that matter), they are by far one of the most free form models you can kitbash to your hearts content. Even if GW is slow to update the available line of 'Nids, there's just so much room to grab organic looking bits and incorporate them into your kitbash. Every Tyranid army should look entirely unique based on the combination of consumed DNA.

    speaking as someone who no longer had time to paint & play early into 3rd edition (I still have my old pewter 2nd edition hive tyrant!), imagine my surprise when this video appeared in my recommendations and I discovered there's a 10th edition about to release 😂

    Would be cool to see the crusher type and dog gene variant of a xeno/tyranid model

    The Tyranids may not be big winners but they got me into the hobby. So even though I am a Dark Angels simp (and, most recently, also a Night Lords one) the Tyranids hold a special place in my heart. Also you can paint them with practically no restrictions to colour schemes.

    You have to give the Octarius War its own video Majorkill . You just have to.

    It’s like meteor strikes. You get rocks from space hitting stuff, causing some damage which is pretty inconvenient. Bunch of people die but things are ultimately fine. BUT. Those space rocks were just tiny chunks of a space rock bigger than our planet, and it’s not so much going to hit us, but more ‘we’re going to splat off it’s rocky windshield barely changing it’s trajectory through space’.
