@@this_is_patrick Speaking of, dinar is also used as a currency name in multiple countries: Kuwait, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Tunisia if I remember correctly.
All of these countries took the name from the Portuguese real, which was an important currency for these regions back in the day. Nowadays Portugal may be small, but it was once a major power on the oceans around the globe.

@davidgantenbein9362 Yes, i can understand the confusion here. Most older clerics surname is their city of origin plus "ie" or ی meaning "of the". For example, khomein (خمین) is a city in markazi province, and khamene (خامنه) is in east Azerbaijan. In persian names are not as similar as you might think, but the words خ and ن are present in names of both cities. In any case, tldr should pronounce the name correctly.
Great work as always, just a side note. Rial losing its value isn't just bad news for the Ayatollahs, actually I'm pretty sure this doesn't effect them that much, it's bad news for the people living in Iran who are getting poorer each day. they're the victims not the corrupt Ayatollahs.

Hi I,m writing my opinion about this video and topics in it, as someone who currently lives in Iran and i,m a economy student in university. 1) our economy has 4 main problems : 1:TAX : only the poorest people have to pay taxes and most of rich people don't pay a dollar, mostly dou to lack of laws, for example: a simple worker in factory with a monthly wage of about 170 dollars per month, must pay about 4 dollars as tax (1 dollar: 600,000 rilas) BUT doctors and Layers with income more than 1700 dollars in month can avoid any taxes with just simply not reporting their income. This has to be fixed immediately. 2:ENERGY subsides : 1 liter of gasoline ( benzin) is just 5 cents!!! I,m not kidding it,s cheaper than bottled water in Iran. Not in any neighbouring country price is close to it , for example in Pakistan 1 liter of gasoline is about 0.7 - 1 dollar. This price both encourages smuggling and over consumption. Natural Gas is another example, we have 2nd largest reserves in the world and 3rd largest production , BUT we still have a deficit of 450 millions cubic meters in day , mostly dou to over consumption. And everything else have subsides too , like electricity, bread and more. When you put subsides in consumption you have to face it,s problems, rich people can consum without thinking but most people don't have a car at first to use gasoline and it,s subsides, life is that cheap in Iran that it attracted over 10 million illegal immigrant . And lots of security problems as well. 3: Printing Money : dou to the previous problems, we have budget deficits and government has to print money , but beside that ,there are lots of private banks that can print as much money as they want and nobody bother them, again dou to lack of proper laws. 4: Sanctions: I put it at the end , cus i know it has the least effect on us , we are 45 years under Sanctions and we have our ways , but it,s still bothering. At worst case scenario sanction caused 10% of our economy problems. Our problems is from within not outside. 2) when you have inflation and have to print money, while you insist in fixed exchange rates , it,s like spring, when the pressure is at the most , it releases it,s energy, that's what happing in Iran , every one can see it coming, just look at the volume of money in economy today and one year ego , it,s obvious that you will have like 40-50% inflation. BUT USA media knew it was coming so they gain some political favors in people's Eyes and say , they have inflation cus we Sanctioned them more . They really milk the situation without doing anything. There is nothing and no one left to be sanctioned in Iran but they still use it to gain popularity. 3) cus of the problems i wrote about , people in Iran , especially the youngest are tired , so in the last election, most people demanded the candidates about our major problems to be fixed , that,s why about 150 of 290 members of our parliament will be made of new faces who promised to fixes thes problems. We had a two party system like USA as mentioned in this video, Hardliners and reformists , who both rule over us in the last 45 years . We are tired of old faces, so when other parties like SobheIran came to the politics, people voted for them and not the previous parties. For example the head of reformists in Tehran , didn't even came to the first 60 people in election, so they lost it and now they are saying government didn't let us in, those layers . At the end , sorry for taking your time and my average English.
University Student of International Politics from Pakistan here. Very interesting take. May both our Countries change for the better. سلام بر ایران از پاکستان
Small correction: you don’t have a two party system, you have a one supreme leader system. The supreme leader controls the assembly that decides on who can be elected at all. He just leaves you with two different, but approved flavors.
@@davidgantenbein9362 let me say it in another way , we had two major parties that mostly competed with each other . Here is our political structure in Iran : 1)Supreme Leader: who controls the armed forces and can order government and parliament if it,s needed. 2) Council of experts: they will be elected by people and must supervision on current supreme leader and choose the next one from the council if current one dies or has lost his required parameters. 3) government: a president is chosen by people's vote and must appoint ministers , which they have to get a majority vote in parliament. They have the budget and run near all of the country. 4) parliament: their members are chosen by people's votes and must supervision the government and all the other organizations in Iran , must approve minister and government budget and most importantly, make or change laws . 5) guardian council : they must approve the candidates for all the elections by the laws that parliament authorized and check if new laws in parliament doesn't cross the red lines in Islam. Members are chosen by supreme leader This political structure isn't perfect but all parts of it, supervision each other and people supervision all of them . The guardian council only rejects candidates by laws , that passed in parliament and parliament members do not do anything to lose votes , so no on is rejected for nothing , they had a problem certainly. For example in the last election, 25.000 people candidate for parliament and 15.000 of the passed . Only a handful number of people have a problem with being rejected. These news that one person runs a whole country is just a propaganda, bc if they say all the members in parliament and president and supreme leader is chosen by people, then the enemy in iran would be most of the people, not just a person. If one person runs a country, why there are about one election in Iran from 1979 forward. We even choose the council and mayor of our cities. If it isn't a democracy, why it isn't?
all of that is true, but the sanctions do way more damage than you stated. the inability to trade your resources properly thus relying on few countries and having practically no country making investments in your country is the biggest factor. why do you think iran was booming under the shah? it was because it was an american puppet state and because of that was sanctionless.
Great video. A small note, rial is the equivolent of cents, Toman is the currency people normallÿ use. 1 usd = 60k toman which is crazy since 10 years ago i remember. Exchanging for around 1 usd = 3k tomans so 20 fold decline in around 10-11 years! 4:32 The chart you show when you say Iran's inflation has been above 40% for the past 5 years contradicts your claim. Don't get me wrong, that inflation rate is really bad, but only above 40% for 2 or 3 of them(it's hard to see which side of the line 2020 is on)
I've been hearing of the Rial being in hyperinflation for years? Have Iranians not reached the point where they just use other currencies instead, just like the Venezuelans, Argentines and Zimbabweans do?
People don't really use cash anymore, so the numbers are all digital. For practical purpose it doesn't really matter that much how many zeroes the numbers have when you only use cards and banking, so using Iranian Rial works just fine.
@@موسى_7 Yes it's mostly debit card payments or card to card transfer by mobile. Even beggars on the street will carry card readers sometimes, because many don't carry cash. Also there is a daily cash withdrawal limit per card of 2mil Rials (equivalent to 4 Dollars). The government is pushing everybody to switch to card and digital payments ✌
@@justinr9753 Sure it was. Wonder if pointing out the coin technology used on the shopping cart was part of it too. Russia is probably pretty proud of coming up with that.
It's not the elections causing this. The central bank recently increased the quota for traveler's foreign currency purchase, so the demand went up and pulled up the prices.
It is clear people buy dollar in Iran, which causes the values of local currancy decrease. But since Iran does not expert much to Western markets, there is little dollar or Euro come in. That is the main cause of currancy collapse. Iran, Zimbabwe, Syria, Libanon, Yemen, Somaliland and Sudan have similar problem in terms of currancy.
I wasn't clear enough. I was referring to price jumps right before and after the elections which are more than expectations. Also in recent days, central bank has auctioned gold bullion coins, and combined with recent global gold price rallies, it has excited people and has put pressure on the demand side both for gold and for foreign currencies.
Oh please shut it, as if what happened during the revolution was so clean and fair that anyone willingly chose this. This mindset is what has kept Iranians isolated. We do not have to suffer because the west didnt like the shah and his progress. If only we could know who brought khomeini ( may his soul suffer eternally) to Iran!!!! Next time tom , keep Irans name out of your mouth and study some history
That was the previous generation, and don't get me wrong, the current generation implicitly agrees with you and is mad at what our parents (not mine though) did to us. But why should we suffer for it? Most young Iranians have never voted. Are you saying we still deserve to suffer? Also your characterisation is too simplistic and ignores external factors, for example the fact that many western countries supported the ayatollahs coming to power. So it was not just Iranians democratically electing the ayatollahs. They both had external support and took power by force. Could we stop them in 1979? I don't think so.
Funnily Americans say stop giving money to Israel/Ukraine while Iranians probably are screaming stop giving money to Hamas. Iran funds a bunch of groups which is probably a bad idea when you have a collapsing economy.

Well, it's worth noting that Iran has apparently decided to deprecate the Rial in favour of the New Toman (not to be confused with the Toman, worth 10 Rial). The New Toman is functionally identical to the Rial, but with an exchange rate from the Rial of 1:10,000 (10,000 Rial -> 1 New Toman). Anywho, an exchange rate of ~60 New Toman -> 1 USD still isn't a very good look.

True, but having the successor being named nearly identical for foreigners isn’t helping here.
@davidgantenbein9362 Yes, i can understand the confusion here. Most older clerics surname is their city of origin plus "ie" or ی meaning "of the". For example, khomein (خمین) is a city in markazi province, and khamene (خامنه) is in east Azerbaijan. Hi
I,m writing my opinion about this video and topics in it, as someone who currently lives in Iran and i,m a economy student in university.
1) our economy has 4 main problems :
1:TAX : only the poorest people have to pay taxes and most of rich people don't pay a dollar, mostly dou to lack of laws, for example: a simple worker in factory with a monthly wage of about 170 dollars per month, must pay about 4 dollars as tax (1 dollar: 600,000 rilas)
BUT doctors and Layers with income more than 1700 dollars in month can avoid any taxes with just simply not reporting their income.
@@shujah9746 Inshallah.
علیکم السلام از ایران به پاکستان
@@davidgantenbein9362 let me say it in another way , we had two major parties that mostly competed with each other .
Here is our political structure in Iran :
1)Supreme Leader: who controls the armed forces and can order government and parliament if it,s needed.
Members are chosen by supreme leader
This political structure isn't perfect but all parts of it, supervision each other and people supervision all of them .

People don't really use cash anymore, so the numbers are all digital. For practical purpose it doesn't really matter that much how many zeroes the numbers have when you only use cards and banking, so using Iranian Rial works just fine.

Iranians only have themselves to blame.......
Good reporting!
As an Iranian, this video is very uniformed. I expected better from tldr.
When from the top down everything is fraudulent, how could the money keep value?
Iranians get the government they voted for. And that government took away their choices years ago. But they got what they asked deserved.

The New Toman is functionally identical to the Rial, but with an exchange rate from the Rial of 1:10,000 (10,000 Rial -> 1 New Toman).
