    Sometimes you just gotta go and buy a bunch of stuff to figure out if it works for you or it doesn't. I find it reassuring that if you don't use something you pass it on to someone else; doesn't go to waste.

I also find that all Derwent products are consistantly good . I look no further now , I'll stick with these products , time spent trying anything else is time I could use being creative . I'm glad you rate the Jackson's Soft Pastels too! I agree to some extent with Derwent products, but don't love all their lines (for example Albrecht Dürer watercolour pencils blow Derwent's regular watercolour pencils out the water, I prefer Prismacolor to their Chromaflow, I love the Lightfast and Drawing Pencils, but they need to be supplemented with other brands' colours, and I don't think their Pastel Pencils are rated that highly.)

    I was considering that MegaColor set just last night. I just love using those pencils. They're fun to look at, feel great to hold, and they put down a great line. I particularly enjoy the white to layer over watercolor. My only issue is memorizing the color by name instead of by end color as it is sometimes misleading, particularly in the yellow shades. When I prefer a waxy pencil, I reach for those. Speaking of that, I need to test how waxy they are compared to the Neocolor I. Could I get away with using them as a resist? I love the Neocolor II, but the resist is the only reason I would reach fot them. Thank you, Helen! I really appreciate all your videos!

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I tried the white for a watercolour resist, and they worked a bit but not great - nowhere near as good as Neocolor I white.
      For the colours, I just taped a swatch chart inside the lid - I can only seem to do art with any medium along with swatch charts!

    This is a useful video because we can see we’re all in the same boat! Buying art supplies with the best intentions of using them but then they end up being neglected. I have only once given art supplies away. It was a watercolor paint set. At the time I bought two (one to use and spares) but then started to buy other brands so I gave the spare set away. My Caran D’Ache Neo IIs aren’t used either as crayons or as watercolors ( I made a watercolor palette by breaking the sticks in half). I don’t use my soft pastels or pan pastels for pastel painting, I use them to enhance or correct issues on my watercolor paintings. Your cards are beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

    I really enjoy your 'one year' reviews, it's interesting to see what you've enjoyed using and not so much. Your lino cuts are lovely😍 I don't have any Neocolour 1's apart from white which I use as resist. I do have some Inktense pencils and a palette set but I don't seem to use them very much, just never gelled with them for some reason. My grandchildren enjoy using them though so I feel they're not going to waste.
    I'm trying to be on a mostly no buy this year apart from restocks but I've already succumbed to getting myself some of the new Schmincke Horadam Natural pigments and liquid earth, some really lovely colours and i did manage to restrain myself and not go mad!

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We all seem to be in the same boat with the Inktense pencils!! I'm going to have to give them some more thought for ways we can use them!
      Oooo - I was looking at the new Schminckes!! How are you finding them?! (I was sad though - the Natural pigment I most liked, is fugitive!)

    • @artmix700
      @artmix700 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@helencryer that would be great because i've always wondered if I'm just not using them properly! I only received the Schmincke tubes yesterday morning so not had much chance to play yet but I'm loving the look of them swatched. I'd say a couple seem a little more vibrant in real life, have a slightly weird texture out of the tube but from experience that's pretty standard for natural pigments and they do dry lovely. I tried to choose colours that were most dissimilar to my Wallace Seymour natural pigments, so went for Chalk, Curcuma, Dragons Blood, Dyers Green, Indigofera and Yellow Ochre, the lightfastness ranges from fair to good. I know what you mean about the Stil de Grain being fugitive, such a pity. I also picked up the Liquid Earth (watersoluble charcoal) in Sanguine and it's so lovely, both in colour and texture. I'll definitely go for the others 2 colours in that range........a bit less daunting for me than charcoal, lol! Just checked and it's all still on sale on Jackson's until tonight so if you're tempted it's a good time to try😉

    I was particularly interested to hear what you had to say about the Cretacolor Megacolor set. I bought that set at Christmas, after buying a lot of the pencils open stock. I originally purchased the open stock pencils for myself, but the pencils were GREAT for my kids. They just go down so well, are chunky, and very vivid - they’re basically like really nice crayons which aren’t as waxy/smudgy. So, I bought the set for myself… but my kids have taken it over, too. I absolutely recommend these for kids, if you can swing the price. They’re clearly artist quality, but I was disappointed that the set of 36 had several colors which were similar to each other, and not enough (in my opinion) more muted or at least secondary/tertiary colors. I don’t know if they are quite waxy enough to create a resist (as I see someone else asked about) but they are waxy enough that they don’t always layer well. To some extent that depends on the paper you use. I did find that when I took them out of the tin and put them into, first, a zippered pouch, and then later, a plastic pencil box, we all used them more. I actually separated the tin into the lid and bottom part, with then intention of using then as portable paint palettes. I found that one of the halves works perfectly to lay across the bottom part of my New Wave u.go medium pochade box… it holds onto the magnets and expands the palette space significantly.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I can see them being ideal for kids! That's lovely! I agree on the colours - I was making a swatch to go inside the lid recently, and was thinking it's a shame there were so many similar greens - some more natural, or very pale or very dark colours would have been good.
      I didn't buy mine for layering/blending - they were more for mark making in single lines on mixed media work, so I'm OK with them not blending well. I tried them for a resist, and they don't work well for that, but that's what I got my Neocolor 1's for.

  • @FaithAnnNB
    @FaithAnnNB 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Love the revisited haul videos!
    I don’t have any Neocolor I’s and I haven’t bought them because I think they’d be a “middle category” for me too. They look like a fantastic product (and I love my Neocolor II’s), but I don’t think I would use them enough to justify the purchase for me. I have a lot of supplies that are probably middle category products that I love and think are fantastic, but don’t reach for them much so I feel a bit guilty. However, at the same time, it gives me comfort in knowing that I have those supplies in my cupboard because when I’ve used them, I do enjoy them… so it’s nice to know they’re there for when the urge strikes. I think I’d have remorse if I gave them away and decided a year from now that I wanted to use them. (Far easier to give away the stuff I don’t like at all 😅.)
    I also have some inktense pencils that don’t get as much use as they should (none of my pencils do, except a handful of white or pale colours that I use on watercolour/gouache pieces to add detail).

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    A year! So glad I found your channel those months ago. I’ve had an upheaval in my art style and what supplies I use. I am obsessed with media that dries permanent - but also watercolour. Big fan of the neocolor 1s. I must admit I find the neocolor 2s kinda muddy. I wish I liked them more. This year I found Flashe, Luminance, and the inktense blocks. Rediscovered Gelatos that have been in my drawer for a few years. But my fave is always the Pitt pens, especially the big brush/dual.
    Still working on the oil pastels situation - why are they so difficult for me to use? 🤔🤗
    Those cretacolor mega don’t layer well in my experience. Nice colours.

I recently got a white block to see if i can tone the colours down a little to force my self to try them again. i prefer to mix them on a caran d'ache pallete and use like paint . if i use a watercolour pencil i much prefer albrecht durers

    Very interesting to see, what and how you used the items!
    I love the AD pencils and the inktense, but don’t use them that often. (Shame on me)
    I have a love hate relationship with the Neocolor I s. We had to paint with them in school fairly often (Growing up in Switzerland comes with some nice Caran d’Ache products used in school. Every pupil got the Caran d’Ache Gouache as well. I can just remember that we had to clean it over the summer break every year 😅)
    I absolutely hated to work with them and my hand still hurts from remembering how it was to paint with them. They always remind me of the art projects we had to do in school. One specific project was to paint in the style of Paul Klee with the Neocolor I.

      Thanks! I'm definitely no expert 😜 but soft pastels are drier, more dusty, and a bit like using chalk, while oil pastels are kind of stickier and greasier, a bit like using lipstick (though with both kinds of pastels, there's a lot of variation in hardness across different brands).

I only bought a few open stock colours. I am learning that whole sets are largely a waste for me and the art i enjoy doing.
