    This painting looks great 😀
    I don't have the pans, I only use the inktense pencils which I love very much. ❤
    I use them in watercolor painting to accentuate or just the pencils with a waterbrush to color in postcards for calming down a bit (no thinking needed 😂)

      The pencils are lovely aren't they?! I think turning off your brain and just playing colour is a wonderful way of relaxing!

    Lovely painting! Your mixture of media is inspiring. The inktense looks interesting. I’ve added them to my future wish list. I’ve recently purchased a load of new products and I must figure them out first. Collecting products is a side hobby from using the products. 😊

    I don't really use watercolour, but I do use inktense paints, and I do use them like watercolour. They do work genuinely well instead of watercolour, and I really like them because they're easy to layer, and you can get much more vibrant colours with them than watercolour

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's great you're enjoying them!
      There are some watercolour qualities which I like as well (like granulation, and being less staining etc), but the Inktense are definitely pretty versatile.

    i bought the small set recently as they say they can be used on fabric. However, I still haven't used them for that. I really like the racing green as it's not easy to get a really dark green with my watercolours. Nice painting btw.

      I hear they're pretty good on fabric!
      It's a gorgeous colour. Have you come across Roman Szmal's Perylene Green Deep? It's a wonderful dark one that I'm loving at the moment.

    Great to see how you use them. I love the pans but I have always got stuck at how best to use them given their vibrancy. I’m going to give something similar a go. I have so many lovely photos from holidays this is ideal!

    I will be interested to read the comments because I was wondering when you would choose to use the inktense paints instead of regular watercolour paint? I already have a ton of watercolour paints, but I do have a set of Inktense watercolour pencils and I do like the pencils.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! Yes definitely - I'm curious too. All I can think of really is as an underpainting for mixed media. It's just not as interesting or smooth as watercolour in standalone situations.

    Gorgeous❤ I wish you sold prints! I’d also like to purchase some of your cards with the granulating paint pictures, or even better prints of those too. Don’t quote me on this, and I’m too lazy to go look but I’ve always been under the impression that the Inktense range was made for fibre artists to be used on fabric? I know that I have heat set them with an iron on a Kasia Jacquot (go check her out!) embroidery quilt piece that had too much white for my liking and it is not moving at all. I think Derwent might have started catering to watercolourists etc when they saw the interest in them…but this is just my 5heory 😂

      Thank you!! That's so nice that you are interested in my pictures! I do keep meaning to get organised and sort my old website out, but it keeps not happening 😬 I'm terrible at making myself do things I'm not motivated to do!
      I've definitely seen the Inktense used that way, and wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

    They are good but Derwent just needs to 1) share lightfastness 2) share pigment info 3) stop lying about the being ‘permanent’ they aren’t any more so than watercolour tends to be and I’ve seen enough tests to prove it! The surface does effect this. I hear you can set it permanently into fabric (washing soda then heat set with an iron) but haven’t tried it yet. I only have the pencils and love them! They are very fun.
    They just need to say ‘permanent when set properly into fabric’. Because that’s the only time I’ve seen proof they can be set to not lift/reactivate! (Video a while ago)
    If the price was Lower in Canada I’d consider it but I’d like to get the new pencil colours asap and otherwise as they make a false claim and don’t share pigment/lightfast they are too expensive. I’ll get more honest supplies. Still the pencils are very fun.
    Also they likely have lots of optical brighteners which may contribute to the qualities. I really should lightfast test my pencils, for now I just have them in my ‘not lightfast’ category but I hear many are… need to look into it more!

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with you. I do think they're less movable than my watercolours, but definitely not my idea of permanent.
      I think I saw that something like 87% of the pencils are lightfast. They have quite a bit of info on the pencils on Derwent's website, but much less about the paints.

    Love your videos! I wonder if the Inktense paints have any lightfast information?

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I had a look on the Derwent website, and could only find lightfast info on the pencils and blocks, not the paints. 87% of the pencils are lightfast, so possibly the paints aren't too bad. I think how diluted things are affects their lightfastness too though.

    Thankyou Helen! Do you think you could layer watercolour or gouache over an inktense paint background? Also, which pencils do you think would work best over the inktense? TIA 😊

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry for the delay in replying, I wanted the chance to experiment with this first! I painted a fairly thin wash of Inktense paint (a few different colours) as my background and let it dry, then tried painting over with watercolours and gouache. They both laid down perfectly well over the top. A bit of the Inktense colour comes away if you wash over it very much. I tried out a few pencils over the Inktense wash - Luminance, Lightfast, Holbein Artists, and they all laid down fine. Hope this helps!

      @@helencryer Thankyou for getting back to me Helen - as your channel grows, it must be difficult staying on top of replies. That does help a lot and I guess using inktense and polychromos pencils should be fine also then. Mixed media is an exciting concept, but with all the available materials that there are, it can be somewhat daunting as well 🤷
