I don't agree that you are not a good artist, you are superb at doing your art. It may not look like another artist's style that you are trying to replicate but that's okay. Your art has a light, loose, happy feel to it and that's what I really enjoy about it; which is why I watch your videos.
Love this - what a great exercise! I definitely need to try this, because my current style is very tight and detailed without a lot of personality, at the moment.
Like your 12 houses very much enjoyed the older trees you did too, in the last few days have come across John Harrison almost daily. Thanks for introducing new artists to me.
I could absolutely tell your Mel Chadwicks and your Jane Askeys! You introduced me to Jane's work and I really love it. I think I will try this over the weekend. Thank you!
Thank you for this, I really enjoyed your tree study last year and this is another great exercise and such a good way to try out different styles. I love Melanie Chadwick and John Harrison and I feel that you perfectly captured both their styles❤️ I especially like John Harrisons clean lines. I first came across him on TV, taking part in Watercolour Challenge and was immediately drawn to his style. My Art Creations 'low pressure' sketchbook (inspired by you) arrived this morning so I might have to give this exercise, or something similar, a go🤓
Wonderful demo in how we can copy masters and give them credit for their inspiration. Loved seeing your process with the mixed media. They're all smashing 😊
I've really enjoyed watching both the tree and the house studies you've shared. Will have to give them a try myself. All of these artists are new to me except John Harrison. I love his style with clean lines.
Excellent studies! And doing a whole series at once takes away the temptation to simply copy your source material. I think you always learn more by emulating the style or whatever it was you were attracted to without trying to duplicate.
Thanks! I definitely learnt some general principles here! Also keeping the boxes so small, I could mainly only choose a section of the original work to focus on.
A great exercise, one I feel I can attempt, nice little bite size pics.I love all of them they look great, but was immediately drawn to the John Harrison one. Thanks for sharing this exercise with us.😊
I absolutely love them all Helen , I love to do more architectural artwork in its many forms ( loose & tight ) , your artwork is beautiful as always . Those little pictures would be beautiful framed xx
Really cute paintings. John Harrison is my favourite. I’ve been following him on TH-cam for quite some time and he does a lot of paintings in my area, Staithes being one of them.
Have you heard of Koosje Koene? Her work is like this. I love watching her. I love watching you create and the way you learn and do studies of other artists.
Fabulous idea! Love them all ~ buildings are more my ‘thing’ than flowers or landscapes. I was a little surprised that you hadn’t come across John Harrison before. He was one of the reasons I got back into watercolour, after only doing pen or pen I sketches for years. Thanks for sharing this great exercise xxx
To be honest, I don't know many artists at all really. I've no background in art, and have only been dabbling in my own way for the past few years. My interest in art is more to do with a love of art materials and my physical interaction with them than anything else!
They all look so good. I love the look of multiple pics grouped together like this! I think my favourites are the top left on the left hand page, and the bottom left on the right hand page.
This is an excellent idea Helen! I might steal it for my own practice, I have been doing copies of landscape drawings because I find my lines not expressive and concise enough. You did a really lovely job 😊
This is such a brilliant exercise- I loved the trees one last year so I’ll definitely give this one a go at some point soon. I really enjoy when artists use ‘unrealistic’ colours - that pink gives so much life - it’s something I need to try more. The John Harrison one also reminded me of your beautiful granulating colour Cornish cards. Lovely- thanks for the inspiration. 😊
I have to agree, his style stands out here. The scene you have so nicely depicted is likely to be in Staithes or Robin Hood’s Bay if I’m not mistaken. I once saw John on “Watercolur Challenge” (or similar such competition).
These are great Helen! 🤗💖✨ while on the topic of “studies”, I wanted to let you know that we’re *finally* having a pop-up ART HANG PARTY! this Saturday, Feb 3 at 10am et, which I think is Saturday evening for you - we’ll be doing Master Studies!
HURRAY!!! Thank you - I'm so excited - I would love to attend!!! I'm spending Saturday morning in the sea doing Coastguard water rescue training, and am going away on Sunday, so I'll be very organised this week, and try and pack in advance, so that I can make it! I'll message you nearer the time for help on how to join.
Thank you. This is a very useful exercise indeed. I’m going to give it a try as well as try to incorporate more mixed media. And thanks for including the links to the artists. It will be fun to explore their work and style. I’ve been following Melanie Chadwick but wasn’t aware of the others. I really like her work. Although still a beginner to watercolor and gouache, I too tend to get bogged down in the details. I also don’t like how I’m doing my trees and have been looking at many others trees and trying to improve. I too really like the more simplistic, stylized or what I would call folk art style landscapes, trees and buildings along with the way people use mixed media. Another person you might want to check out if you haven’t already is Natasha Newton. I absolutely love her work. Another one I just recently found and really like is Safari of Ideas, I can’t remember the artist’s name off the top of my head. I think you did an excellent job on these. I really like the two lower left on the first page as well as the two top brick/stone buildings on the top of the right hand page, along with the shadowed street in the middle. I also really love when you do your splodge & scribble. They’re awesome.
Oh how funny - I did a couple mini studies of the Mel Chadwick Zine in January! 😎 I LOVED your trees studies back last year, really inspired me. These are gorgeous too Helen! 😍
Hi - it's a very nice exercise and also nice to watch. I bought 6 of these art creations books in different sizes and YES I did buy the Paul Rubens water colour set that you reviewed yesterday ish.... thx for the work.
It is a recommended practice to practice from other artists, especially the masters. If you see a style you want to practice and find your own way, that is not copying and taking credit. Those other artists do the same in their own journeys.
I love your studies in the tree exercise and these are just as inspiring!💖 Can I ask how you find the reference images for these, is it Pinterest and what search words do you use? Thanks Helen! x
Thanks! For the left hand page they were all from publications I've bought, and the right hand page were from people's Instagram (I've included all the links), and either pictures I'd already saved on Pinterest, or putting 'House Sketch' in Pinterest.
I beg to differ. You are as good as these artists!
That's very kind! 😊
What a nice projects! Thank you for showing me how you did it. I think I will have a go on it too!
Oh I'm glad! I hope you enjoy it!
Those were all great. Thank you, also for a great idea. I immediately recognised the John Harrison one
Thanks! I hadn't come across him before!
This is a great way to learn and I love what you’ve done! You’re a great artist in your own right !
Thank you soooo much!!
You inspire me and so many others with your art sharing! This is fabulous and makes such a lovely reveal when the tape is removed.
That's so nice - thank you!
What a wonderful exercise! I need to get busy. 😊
Thanks! Hope you enjoy it!
I don't agree that you are not a good artist, you are superb at doing your art. It may not look like another artist's style that you are trying to replicate but that's okay. Your art has a light, loose, happy feel to it and that's what I really enjoy about it; which is why I watch your videos.
That's lovely of you - thank you! 😊
Love this - what a great exercise! I definitely need to try this, because my current style is very tight and detailed without a lot of personality, at the moment.
This is so relatable!! It's definitely useful to replicate the strokes of looser styles and realise that more is not needed.
I love the look of these little sketches tigether!
Thanks so much!
Like your 12 houses very much enjoyed the older trees you did too, in the last few days have come across John Harrison almost daily. Thanks for introducing new artists to me.
That's so funny! I hadn't come across him before this!
Hi Helen , what an interesting vid , for me No 1 is jane Askey 's church , but all very thought provoking . Mike in Exeter xx
Thanks! It's interesting how everyone likes different things!
I could absolutely tell your Mel Chadwicks and your Jane Askeys! You introduced me to Jane's work and I really love it. I think I will try this over the weekend. Thank you!
That's great! Hope you have a good time with it!

Oh my gosh - I remember Watercolour Challenge!! Brilliant programme!
Good luck with your sketchbook! Remember - zero judgement!
Those sketches are just lovely! I am inspired to box off my own watercolor sketchbook and give this a go.
Thanks! I think working in that small scale makes it really fun and easy!
What a lovely idea, Helen. The individual studies are great but the two pages as a whole look fantastic. Thank you for you videos.
Thanks ever so much!
Wonderful demo in how we can copy masters and give them credit for their inspiration. Loved seeing your process with the mixed media. They're all smashing 😊
Thanks ever so much!
Makes sense as practice in getting loose to reference things already simplified, yea good idea….. 👍 They all turned out cute!
Thank you!!
Tried the tree study and enjoyed it. Can’t wait to give this one a try.
Oh, that's lovely to hear!
Helen this is so cool!!! 10k subscribers! Amazing 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Haha - Hi Marco!! Thank you! I'm pretty surprised!
Keep it up, 10k in a year is massive growth. Never know where this might take you!
you capture the essence of each area, whether outdoors directly, yr ref photos or other's pieces. Ty.
That's so nice - thank you!
I've really enjoyed watching both the tree and the house studies you've shared. Will have to give them a try myself. All of these artists are new to me except John Harrison. I love his style with clean lines.
Oh that's great!
The other artists are definitely looser than John Harrison, but so much fun!
I love these. They are beautiful.

Thanks! I definitely learnt some general principles here! Also keeping the boxes so small, I could mainly only choose a section of the original work to focus on.
I love the pop of pink!
Ann Cowan often uses it, and I think it's wonderful!
A great exercise, one I feel I can attempt, nice little bite size pics.I love all of them they look great, but was immediately drawn to the John Harrison one. Thanks for sharing this exercise with us.😊
Thanks! Yes - it's definitely doable - the boxes are so little and can be done whenever - a page to come back to gradually building up over time.
Yes,a little and often,then it doesn’t become too overwhelming.😊
I absolutely love them all Helen , I love to do more architectural artwork in its many forms ( loose & tight ) , your artwork is beautiful as always . Those little pictures would be beautiful framed xx
Thanks ever so much, bad always! It's definitely a fun subject!
How lovely those are!!!!! ❤
It's 10000, Helen, Yeah 🎉🥳👍🏻🌟
Thank you!!
Really cute paintings. John Harrison is my favourite. I’ve been following him on TH-cam for quite some time and he does a lot of paintings in my area, Staithes being one of them.
I feel like the last person to have heard of him!!
Thank you! This is such nice way to study a variety of styles, it's bound to be helpful and looks very enjoyable.
Thanks!
Have you heard of Koosje Koene? Her work is like this. I love watching her. I love watching you create and the way you learn and do studies of other artists.
I haven't - I will go and look them up, thank you!
Such a fun idea, and what a good way to discover what works for you and what doesn't. And a new twist on copying old masters. :)
Thanks, yes - seeing what elements are needed to make things work.
Fabulous idea! Love them all ~ buildings are more my ‘thing’ than flowers or landscapes. I was a little surprised that you hadn’t come across John Harrison before. This is a great exercise ! Thank you for sharing 😊 I will try right away
I'm glad you like it!
Beautiful trees 🌳 ❤
This is an excellent idea Helen! I might steal it for my own practice, I have been doing copies of landscape drawings because I find my lines not expressive and concise enough. You did a really lovely job 😊
I think it's a good way to learn - hope you enjoy it!

I hope you do - it really is fun! Yes, I definitely want to use more colour, but I get scared to, or don't know how! Thanks!
You nailed John Harrison’s style!
Thank you! 😊

Love this idea for practice!
The small scale and having an already simplified source makes it feel so easy and fun!
I was looking for inspiration and found it from your video. Thank you for sharing!
I'm really glad - thank you!
This video and your tree one are my most favorite on your channel, I wish I would take the time and do the same practice 😊
Thank you! Have a go! You don't need to do them all at once, if time is an issue!
Thank you. This is a very useful exercise indeed. I’m going to give it a try as well as try to incorporate more mixed media. And thanks for including the links to the artists. Yes, I've seen Natasha Newton's art, but I need to go and look up Safari of Ideas - thank you!
Oh how funny - I did a couple mini studies of the Mel Chadwick Zine in January! 😎 I LOVED your trees studies back last year, really inspired me. These are gorgeous too Helen! 😍
Also - congrats on the 10k subs! 🎉
Haha - that's brill! There's such a skill in being able to capture the simple things we'll, like she does!
Thanks ever so much!!
I really like the Georgia Lumley one. That’s the kind of bold simplicity I want to do but I always end up adding way too much.
Yes, definitely!
these look stunning, I should really do more studies ☺☺☺
It's so much fun!
Hi - it's a very nice exercise and also nice to watch. I bought 6 of these art creations books in different sizes and YES I did buy the Paul Rubens water colour set that you reviewed yesterday ish.... thx for the work.
Thanks! Haha - sounds like you've no excuse not to do plenty of painting!!
are those trees cute or what? !!
Loved watching how these came together. What tape do you use?
Hiya! I used washi tape, though I'm not sure which brand it was.
It is a recommended practice to practice from other artists, especially the masters. If you see a style you want to practice and find your own way, that is not copying and taking credit. Those other artists do the same in their own journeys.
Thanks for the encouragement! I appreciate it!
