I just want to say thank you Dan and Rachel. I just bought a 53' Jubilee and I'm gonna tear into the electrical tomorrow. Got a 12V conversion kit for it too. I would not have had the confidence to take it on if it wasn't for you two.

We just moved to Goodrich, MI, and have a small farm off Dutch Road.
We stopped by the Steiner store in Lennon, Mi, and boy were we disappointed in the rudeness of its sales staff.
My husband took a picture of me sitting in the store and the sales clerk said there's no taking photos inside the store! He further went on to say they signed legal documentation to prevent photos from being taken.
We were berated and made to feel shame... (We won't be going back there again, and they should have a sign that says no cameras allowed!). Shame on Steiner ...

The quality of your video sold me. The quality of what I received was equally impressive. Received the complete 12v kit 3 days from order placement. It was packed well. I had watched your video and planned to watch it again as I installed everything, but the full page color photos and clear diagrams included the awesome installation guide made that unnecessary. Very impressed high quality as-advertised kit that works beautifully. Highly recommend.

You all have no idea how much help you are. My dad and I are working on his 1952 Ford (9N?) tractor as a project. It’s literally our first ever project together and will probably be our last. Hes 80 and in failing health….and I’m 50. He’s starting to forget things and I’ve never known the first thing about tractors. These tutorial videos have been golden for us. There aren’t words that can express how happy I am that I discovered your your videos. They have allowed me to help him when otherwise I wouldn’t be able to. Thank you so much and please keep the videos coming.
FYI….your ability to teach this material and make it as clear and concise as you do is superior to anything I saw during my 13 years of higher education. Excellent work!

Just some advice for anyone watching. The resistor was put on upside down. It will still function, but the wires have a tendency to touch the metal part (resistor) and it gets hot. Could burn your wires. Also put a meter on your new 12 volt coil. Too many of them have a resistance of 1.5 ohms and that is the same as a 6 volt coil. I personally like to find them with 3.0 ohms resistance.

Oh man. I remember when my dad bought a JD 40. Great tractor but the batter was below the gas tank. This means the steel tank was about an inch above the battery terminals. If you had a problem with the battery holder you would end up with the terminals potentially hitting the tank and starting a fire. He rebuilt the entire tractor but part of his update was switching to side terminals. I recall him doing something else for that but it's been too long. When upgrading, its worth taking a look and making changes to things that need improving.

Wow. Quite the coincidence to see this as I only discovered your fantastic channel a couple weeks ago and I am just about to do a 12V conversion on a 2N. A few thoughts:
    1. The side of the ammeter that the coil was wired to will result in the ammeter indicating the number of amps out of the alternator rather than the number of amps into the battery. For example if the ammeter reads 20A, it will actually mean only about 16A is charging the battery since about 4A will be going to the coil. I prefer to see directly how much my battery is charging or discharging so I wire the coil (and headlights if the tractor has them) to the negative side of the ammeter instead. Either will work fine. The operator just needs to know how to interpret the reading depending how it's wired.
    2. Some other commenters mentioned that running the starter on 12V will draw less current than running it on 6V. This is not accurate. The same starter (ie same resistance) at higher voltage will draw higher current (if the current was lower it would crank slower, not faster). However a 12V system can tolerate a lighter gauge (ie higher resistance) cable from battery to starter because of the higher voltage available to drive the current through the higher resistance. Despite the higher current, starter life will likely be prolonged simply due to easier starts (much less time spent cranking).
    3. If you only use your tractor intermittently for short periods, you can get by quite nicely with a partial conversion. Just change to a 12V coil (2.5 ohm primary winding) and 0.5 ohm ballast resistor and disconnect the generator wire entirely. Then you can use a 12V battery (still positive ground). With a strong battery you should get several hours of operation before you need to plug it in to recharge. Think of it like turning your tractor into a plug-in hybrid. Use a deep cycle battery for longer battery life. If you only use your tractor for very short periods and park it outside you can also get away with permanently mounting a small solar battery maintainer to the hood to keep the battery charged. I operated like this for many years without issue. It's a very cheap/simple conversion to get the benefit of much easier starting IF you don't need to run your tractor for more than a couple hours at a time. It's obviously not as good as a complete 12V conversion including alternator, but I thought I would mention it for those where it may make sense.

One suggestion. That ring terminal you used was the wrong size. Yellow terminals are for 12-10 AWG, Blue for 16-14 AWG, and Red for 22-18 AWG. Also, marine style, that have heat shrink are great for use on a tractor that may be out in the elements a lot. I enjoy your video and really love the Farmall Cub Encyclopedia. Keep up the good work..

Took 8 hours to do this conversion but 12 volt is worth it. The kit had two problems. (Note: I bought the kit elsewhere. Probably should've bought it here.) The instructions were/are worthless and the belt was/is too short. Took 8 hours because of problems with the tractor otherwise on a clean tractor should take an average Joe a couple hours. I won't go into all the problems but the tractor was the nightmare. 12 volt system 👍 with the instruction of this video 👍👍. Top notch! Thank you. 👍👍

Nothing waa said about the starter going from 6 to 12 V. Twice the voltage means 1/2 the amps required. I'm thinking the brushes may last twice as long in service? Thank you..

    • @frombryant6678
      @frombryant6678 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@plainandsimple1 Ok thanks Roland, I wasn't sure. Just expressing my opinion. The only problem I think about is if the engine is hard starting & has to be cranked for longer periods of time. It might smoke the armature windings. If it starts reasonably good it shouldn't be an issue. Spinning over faster will negate rings & valves leaking, causing lower compression & poor starting.

Great video! A couple of questions though. I've got a 39 9N that was previously converted to a 12 volt negative ground. When I was given the tractor, the wiring was in terrible shape. It had a dash mounted starter button that was frozen up, and a 3 wire alternator. One of the wires from the alternator went to a short lead back to the large terminal. The other wire went back towards the dash but wasn't connected to anything. The large wire went to the battery. The ignition switch has 3 posts but none of the wires were connected. There was a solenoid mounted on the back of the dash but was not connected to anything. I plan on replacing the starter button, the ammeter and the solenoid. Do you have any input on the correct wiring schematic? I've searched the internet but so far, haven't found a similar configuration. Any help would be appreciated. I am doing a semi-restoration on this tractor by repainting the body work, perhaps repainting the frame and engine and wheels. Thanks for all your videos, and thanks in advance for any advice.

when wired as this is on my 2n, it sparks at the key (on the inside of the engine bay). This was never an issue on the 6v system. Any thoughts as to why this may happen? it also turns over but does not start. I have not checked for spark yet, but I'm almost certain I do not have spark (I'll check that this week)

Is it bad on the old starters of the 2n 9n or 8n? I've seen videos saying never swap it out on that case alone. Because, there's no such thing a 12v starter for any of them? That 12v hits way to hard knocks teeth off or destroys the shaft of the starter?

Hello, I'm a 64-year-old farmer who recently purchased a small farm in Goodrich, Mi, off Dutch Road.
My wife and I stopped at the Steiner Tractor store for a look around and to purchase a front tractor emblem for my old 8n!
Inside the store, I took 1 photo of my wife sitting in a chair and the counter clerk scolded me saying, no taking of pictures in the store.
The counter clerk demeaned me in front of another customer, and my wife! I don't plan to return to Steiners or make further purchases from them!
Steiner Tractor should post signs that read: (PLEASE, NO CAMERAS ALLOWED!) to prevent degrading community customers.

The starter should also be changed, supplying 12 volts to a 6 volt starter can damage the starter drive and ring gear. I have repaired many starters that have come in with bent shafts, broken teeth on drive from using 12 volt.

What’s the advantage over the old generator ?

    • @frombryant6678
      @frombryant6678 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Three things as I see them:
      1) 12 V cranks the engine over faster for better/faster starting with less amperage. You could theoretically use smaller wire cables.
      2) This alternator has a integral solid state voltage regulator that doesn't need adjusting like the 6 V one does. The old one was mechanical with points.
      3) These parts are readily available. Not hard to find like the old 6 V ones.
There may be more advantages but those come to mind right off.
Oh! 12 V lights are typically brighter.

Nice conversion video however your ammeter connections really need to be corrected. you have the polarity correct but the loads (ignition, lights, etc.) should be connected to the negative with the alternator. The battery positive should be the only connection to positive side of the ammeter. Respectfully, Dennis, KV4WM, a US NAVY NUCLEAR SUBMARINE VETERAN and Amateur Radio Operator. Looking at picking up an early 9N. Doing some research before I bring it home. Dig the informative video on the conversion, bummed that your kits are overpriced significantly.

You get what you pay for with their kit. They really did get the best of the aftermarket components and put them in the kit. It's noticeable vs the cheaper kits I've bought

Their videos are great but their customer service is terrible! I will not purchase any parts from them in the future, Bought a crank pully from them for my 9N tractor and it is machined to the under-size and will not go on. Emailed them twice and. never heard anything back from them!
