If a single trip to the toilet can tip the ratio of bacteria vs. your body cells, this may explain why I sometimes feel more human after one particularly big dump.

You should do an episode on the wide spread of antibiotic resistance. A lot of people don't know just how much antibiotics/antibacterial chemicals are being misused, expecially in America, on everyday items, and in our food, and the role that has in creating pan-resistant bacteria.

I had C. Diff Colitis when I was a child. The broad-spectrum antibiotic I was prescribed didn't just weaken my gut microbiome, it near completely obliterated it. I was in the hospital for over a week; definitely the scariest time of my life.

Wow this episode come at a funny time. I just had a lecture about the same subject by Tine Rask Licht from DTU(Danish Technical University) food. She talked about the fact that the effect the microorganisms had on the health of people were much dependant on what you feed them. The reason why fiber is so good for microorganisms is because you natural gut can't digest it so this nutrient will actually get all the way to the large intenstine where the largest concentration of bacteria in your gut resides. Microorganisms in your gut produce SCFA(Short Chain Fatty Acids) when eating fiber, and these SCFA's have been associated with increased immune system functionality. However when the bacteria run out of fiber for digestion they go to the lipids(fats) and protein. This makes them ferment all sorts of funky chemicals that both affect the smell of your off gas and has also been associated with increased risk of cancer, due to ROS(Reactive Oxygen Species) creation. This is why when people get colon cancer it is usually in the end of the digestive system it is located. This is because there was not enough fiber for the bacteria to make the entire journey on so near the end they run out and start digesting the fat/protein. I know this was a long post but I just thought it was such an interesting topic, that I had to share it.

Have you checked out the book "Super Gut," that offers an inexpensive way to restore probiotics and good microbes in our gut? It came out in 2022 and again, Dr. Davis offers very inexpensive and natural ways to restore the gut microbe balance. It's not a quick-fix process. And it makes more sense than anything else I've read, especially when they have learned a lot since this video was made in 2017.

I am a patient with Ulcerative Colitis and it took 8 years of hit and miss treatments to restore balance in my gut and heal the ulcers that were created along with the onset of the disease. In the end it was an experimental treatment that healed me and helped restore the balance.
Now I occasionally consume probiotic foods to maintain the balance in my gut and I have not had another flare up since.
Glad to see a video about this, thanks Scishow!

I've had small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), quantifiable pathogenic gut microbes, stealth pathogens (since we can't sequence most of our microbiome) and general dysbiosis. What has helped me get my life back (I'm only in my 20s and have been sick for years) is a VERY low carb diet.
I eat about 50g of carbs per day and my GI doc is dumbfounded with my success. He thanks god and says it's a miracle, even though it's very logical that removing carbs (main fuel for bacterial) would settle things in my gut. He just never expected this much progress so rapidly. Went from being very sick for years to gaining multiple pounds of healthy body weight per week.
Anyone with "IBS" should look into low carb diets/keto diet/special carb diets/FODMAP diets. Food is powerful.
    AMAZING video, Hank, thank you!

This reminds me of my high school bio teacher, who would attribute two people getting sick at the same time after they started dating to mismatched microbiomes. Two people start dating and depending on how close they get, they get their partner's "germs" and they got sick for a bit while their own body got used to it.

Awesome video! The only thing I would point out is that there are very few microbes that are strictly "good" or "bad". C difficile is a natural member of most (maybe all) humans, and if I recall correctly, different strains help regulate each other and other bacteria as well. It's a combination of both the strain and the wrong ecological interactions (e.g. wrong proportions) in your microbiome that makes C. difficiles bad in the first place. So it's not a question of the proportion between good and bad microbes going out of whack, but what turns a "good" or "neutral" microbe into a bad one.

I think you should do a show about linguistics, specifically how words and ideas spread. The ancient greek philosophers believed that ideas were like living beings that moved from person to person. For example, you could think of religions as living beings with their followers being the cells that make up their bodies.
In your show, in nearly every episode you say "basically" 1 to 3 times on average, probably without realizing it. With over 4 million subscribers, you definitely influence the speaking habits of others without their noticing it. Kind of like sneezing in an airport, you spread the virus globally. Another word that has become popular in the last 10 years is "literally." Both of those words have spread among people like wildfire.
If you were to compare a 11 minute video in which you say "basically" 3 times to a presentation from 30+ years ago, you will unlikely find any that say "basically' with that frequency.
some youtubers will say "basically" a dozen times in as many minutes, while some, usually the older uploaders, almost never say it. Curiously, there is one non-native english speaker who says "basically" at least a dozen times per episode.
I find it fascinating how words rise and fall in popularity. For example, in the 1950's "swell" was a common word, perhaps used with the same frequency that 'basically" is used now, or how "like" was used in the 1980's.
I think this would be a great topic, since you could use yourself as an example of how ideas and words spread like viruses.
I'm reminded of an original star trek episode in which kirk encounters the gods and what they tell him is that they can only survive if people believe in them. ie, ideas and religions are living creatures that use their believers as living cells and when the idea is no longer believed, the idea dies.

Discuss how things like fluoride can destroy the balance and allow bad bacteria to take over when we have a high sugar diet.
I stopped getting bad breath by brushing with just water and by not eating and drinking sugary stuff, for example.

What we do know is the microbiome is important and probiotics and fermented foods are beneficial. We don't know exactly how important but I think its safe for me to personally reccomend you try to take care of it. I eat lots of vegis, kimchi, greek yogurt and fruit aswell as take 12 Billion active live cultures everyday in the form of 4 different probiotics and I feel a lot better than I used to. Could be placebo but i feel to good to care :)
