I've seen this movie only once and this scene has stuck with me for 15 years since. I am a veteran of OIF and this scene completely sums up my service and deployment. It's not about "America's freedom" it's about the man next to you, that's it. When I first watched the movie, I was in-processing my first base. It took several years for me to fully comprehend what he said. I cannot and will not explain that scene nor the feelings associated with it to any civilian.

The real-life Delta Force operator who went by “Hoot,” and who was portrayed by Eric Bana in the movie, today fights a three-pronged enemy that continues to plague troops and veterans: post traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain and substance abuse.
Almost 25 years after the infamous Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia, which led to the “Black Hawk Down” book and movie, retired Master Sgt. Norman Hooten is now Dr. Norman Hooten.
Hooten is a full-time health care provider at the Orlando VA Medical Center. And he has first-hand experience with the effects of war, including a platoon sergeant he had known early in his career who died by suicide after struggling with PTSD and substance abuse

My dad was a Ranger, 82nd Airborne 75th regiment 2nd battalion. He was in the last part of Vietnam, fought in Grenada, and then Panama. After that, he left the service shortly before the action in Somalia. I remember well what his reaction was to that whole fiasco, because when he learned of the true scale of what had happened there he completely broke down. I had never seen my dad cry before, but learning that several of his closest friends had died there for nothing turned him from the hardest and most stoic man I'd ever known into a sand castle in a hurricane.

One of the things I said was ‘they can’t stop time, tomorrow will come and then it will be a brand new day’
I took his first salute June last year,he now is coming top in everything he does

And at the end he looked at us both and said “boys maybe one day you’ll serve and understand what this meant….but I fear that day for you both as well”. Couple years later his son would join the army and deployed to Iraq/2008 and Africa/2010. I would join the Marines and deploy Afghanistan 2010. We both understand that final speech proudly and sadly

But seriously, the vast majority do it for other reasons. They enter in with the idea of being defenders, they hold together for those who fight beside them. Yes, "used". Because it is a trust betrayed. That our lives will not be expended for any but the most dire reasons and not for economics or ego.

The most valuable thing on the battlefield is the men around you.

Every scene of this movie is epic and milestone in itself. Perhaps few scenes are far better than many entire hollywood movie.

This is the line people fail to see when considering the necessity of going to war. It’s not about wanting to kill the other guy, or conquer his land, it’s about being there for the men next to you.

It's about being there with your fellow war criminals invading a land that got nothing to do with you

Yeah the sayings and actions were but the name was real as there really was a guy there nicknamed "Hoot"....Ewan McGregors character was more of a composite and the name was changed on his character completely because the guy in real life ended up being a pedophile.

To clarify this for you. Rangers (75th ranger regiment) are special operations soldiers, falling under USSOCOM, which includes Delta, SEALS, 160th SOAR (the pilots were SOF too) etc... Delta or 1st SFOD (now know as CAG) are special operations soldiers who were selected from the Ranger Regiment or the Special Forces ODA teams. Also not all rangers are grunts (11B's). The rangers are anything but normal grunts. They are the BEST infantryman

I got to know Hoot in the late 90's. I use to deliver to his house when my UPS route was in Southern Pines NC. 145 Valhalla Road. Still remember the address. Very down to Earth guy.
