The ground forces are rerouted to converge on the crash site. The Somali militia erects roadblocks, and Lieutenant Colonel Danny McKnight's (Tom Sizemore) Humvee column is unable to reach the crash area and sustains heavy casualties. Meanwhile, two Ranger Chalks, including Eversmann's (John Hartnett) unit, reach Super-Six One's crash site and set up a defensive perimeter to await evacuation with the two wounded men and the fallen pilots.

What’s the Black Hawk Down movie about?
The head of an army of Somalis proclaimed himself the leader of Somalia in 1992 and brought terror to the country. George H. W. Bush set up a humanitarian mission to bring food to those in need. In 1993, the situation quickly escalated: 24 peacekeepers on duty were murdered for no reason on the orders of Mohamed. Mohamed was declared a war criminal and a ransom was placed on his head. The peaceful humanitarian mission led until then by the Americans has now become military. Mogadishu, October 3, 1993. The Rangers, transported by Black Hawk helicopters, were about to surround a hotel in the lower town. The Delta will assault and arrest two of Mohamed's subordinates. Called Irene, the mission lasted an hour at most. But the armed forces had underestimated the impact of their presence on the population. For many Somalis do not appreciate anyone interfering in their problems. So they took up arms and opened fire. Surprised by this fierce and numerous opposition, the soldiers found themselves greatly outnumbered and surrounded and a Black Hawk helicopter was shot down. The American superiority is in fire and ashes and the soldiers are caught in the enemy's fire.

My dad fought in this battle with the 10th mountain division. He would watch this movie at least once a month. I would sit with him but most of the time I was watching him instead of the movie. Even at a young age I could see that a part of him was still fighting this battle, that he was forever in Somalia. He died from COVID in Dec 21 and never really healed the scars he got in Mogadishu. I hope that wherever he is he can finally rest and enjoy a few cold ones with the brothers he lost along the way. RIP

@@ammarabbas7691 On 3 December 1992, the division headquarters was designated as the headquarters for all Army Forces (ARFOR) of the Unified Task Force (UNITAF) for Operation Restore Hope. Major General Steven L. Arnold, the division Commander, was named Army Forces commander. The 10th Mountain Division's mission was to secure major cities and roads to provide safe passage of relief supplies to the Somali population suffering from the effects of the Somali Civil War.[72]
Due to 10th Mountain Division efforts, humanitarian agencies declared an end to the food emergency and factional fighting decreased.[73] When Task Force Ranger and the SAR team were pinned down during a raid in what later became known as the Battle of Mogadishu, the 10th Mountain Division provided infantry for the UN quick reaction force sent to rescue them. The 10th Mountain Division had two soldiers killed in the fighting, which was the longest sustained firefight by regular US Army forces since the Vietnam War.[48] The division began a gradual reduction of forces in Somalia in February 1994, until the last soldiers of the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry returned to the United States in March 1994.
*The Pakistanis provided the heavy armor but it was the elite 10th Mountain who provided infantry support in this UN led coalition QRF. 10th mountain lost two soldiers during the role they served as QRF. They are based out of Fort Drum in New York State, a few hours from where I grew up. They aren't considered SF like the 75th Rangers or CAG but rather a Tier 3 Conventional Forces unit that can be called in to support Special Forces. And also...
It is often believed that the soldiers involved in the Mogadishu Mile had to run all the way to the Mogadiscio Stadium, as it was shown in the 2001 film Black Hawk Down. However, in that scene the filmmakers took artistic license and dramatized the event, departing from the original Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War book by Mark Bowden. In the film, the Mogadishu Mile ends with about a dozen soldiers entering the Mogadishu Stadium having run all the way through the city. In the book, it ends with soldiers reaching a rendezvous point on National Street (in opposite direction to the stadium):
"As he approached the intersection of Hawlwadig Road and National Street, about five blocks south of the Olympic Hotel, he saw a tank and the line of APCs and Humvees and a mass of men in desert battle dress. He ran until he collapsed, with joy."[2]
Not only the Rangers and Delta Force soldiers made the Mogadishu Mile, but also soldiers from U.S. 10th Mountain Division alongside them:
"We didn't ride off the crash site. We didn't run out. We walked expediently in a tactical formation for about a mile to get to an awaiting convoy."
On the whole, the film version where the convoy leaves the soldiers running through the city alone does not correspond to the real event:
"No one ran out of the city. The Mog mile was to a rally point where the Pakistani tanks and the vehicles from 10th Mountain were, waiting to take the men of TFR out to the Pakistani stadium."
"These APCs were headed back about 800 meters to a strongpoint where reserve element has stayed behind with the tanks, and the plan was to move the wounded via the vehicles and the healthy by foot back to the strongpoint. That's exactly what happened. That, in all its non-dramatic form, is the so-called "Mogadishu mile"..."

In 2008, I went to basic training to become an MP and the week we started tactical movements, they showed us this movie in class. We were told it's the most realistic modern military movie when it comes to tactical movements and formations. Reason why? they had veterans from Delta Force and Rangers teaching the actors how to properly look like soldiers. Pretty bad ass.

Because it’s a classic. Classic movies don’t age. I generally rate movies on 1-10 scale of quality and C or no C for classic. Blackhawk Down is about 8.5/10 and +C in my book.

My drill sergeant from basic was there; one of the last stories he told before we graduated. Long before the movie and 9/11. He told it like he was right there still. He honored the two Delta operators lost. Will never forget that night at basic training.
When I want to basic at Ft. Benning back in 2003, we had a drill sergeant named Long who was a Ranger in the actual battle. One scary guy.

the dlelta force operators are truly what makes this movie so great for me, their calm, "get shit done" demanor is portrayed so well, and you know shit is serious when they show any sort of real emotion.
The casual “You okay?” in a wicked gunfight always gets me.

along with Gordy shouting "Randy, last mag" right before getting shot in the head. what hits ya even more is the fact that they repeatedly volunteered to go in and help, knowing that it was pretty much a suicide mission. were denied several times before finally getting permission. both of them volunteering with no hesitation.
Apparently, Gordon's last words were "I'm hit! GODDAMNIT!" before he went down.
It's either the easiest way, or short version of saying "our brother's gone. Here take his rifle to defend yourself. Sorry I can't protect you, but I'll distract them long enough to keep you alive, brother"

@@MrCharlieSeo Well of course a bunch of other shooters were also influenced by Black Hawk Down. But the first COD:MW game was really chalk full of direct Black Hawk Down references. And aside from the references, the game was clearly trying to recreate the overall atmosphere of the movie.

@@sanghoonlee5171 There was a game called Black Hawk Down that was quite popular just around the time counter strike source was around, on PC which was great. It had a map maker and custom servers sadly the developers weren't able to keep up with the times and delta force xtreme was a bit of a flop compared to it.

They way they portrayed CAG operators in this movie is top notch. The little stuff like fist bumping (which shows how close the assaulters were). You can tell that the actors who played Delta were properly trained, little things like the way they move, the stance, weapons grip and always looking up for the windows in the alleyway (potential threat).

They did indeed look like the real deal. In the deluxe DVD set, they have a Behind the Scenes disc where they show all the actors training in a Kill House at an actual Spec Ops base.
Love the portrayal of Delta in this scene, "Sarge, are you receiving me?!" followed by a casual "Yeah, I heard you." A typical response would've been "Yes, sir." But obviously Delta isn't conventional army and from what I've heard, they're a lot more relaxed when it comes to standard military practices like uniforms and mannerisms. From what I've read in the BHD book, a lot of them don't even refer to each other by rank but by last names or nicknames, which I think makes unit cohesion and morale way better. The fist bump was a nice little addition, it's clear that it's a NCO fist bumping a CO but it's still nice that they have that interaction.
Tears of The Sun is a great movie.

What a truly all star ensemble cast. All of these actors went on to have very successful careers
This is super realistic, I could not imagine constantly fighting that long. The longest firefight I was in was about 45 minutes or multiple 5 minute firefights throughout the day. When my family ask me what I did in the military, I tell them watch Black Hawk Down. It hard to explain what we went through in Iraq. 11B LEADS THE WAY. Rest in Peace my brothers.

the movement of the first one pivoting away for the second to open up is super fun to watch.

Same here one of my two favourite films with him in it. The other is Passenger 57 with Wesley Snipes.
Tom Sizemore is a great actor. From 1994 to 2001 he was the shit and it looked as though he'd be a major Hollywood star, but all the substance abuse and legal issues derailed his career and resulted in him being blacklisted from Hollywood blockbusters. Sad he wasted his talent, now he's an underappreciated actor.
This is truly one of the must watch at least once in a lifetime movies
Maybe the best film ever to capture the chaos of intense combat. Makes my list of the top five war films easily.
I love the Delta Force guy William Fitchner played, hes like an empathetic father figure to all the baby face rangers, while the others seem cold, distant and super human, he is someone you can relate too
I met a few of the Rangers and Delta who were in this in real life through my father. These men are true heroes and badasses!

What these men did, went above and beyond what most can do. They deserve and earned the title hero. Some flip burgers and play Call of Duty while some serve our country and give their lives for an idea and love of what our country should stand for. bad policy or not, that doesn't erase their bravery

I don't see much courage there, honestly, just survival instinct. So disagree if you want but we DO indeed fight for our brothers besides us. As a Corpsman we run into gunfire to pull out an injured brother and try to save their life. Its literally the oath we take and something any Corpsman will do for a Marine. I take it you never served or else you would see how (no disrespect meant for you have been respectful to me) dumb your comment is about recruiter speeches and such. AND if you did serve than its 100% certain you have never been in the thick of it and seen combat. Maybe you were a Navy cook or a Yeoman or some support role behind a computer screen flying drones. I appreciate keeping the conversation respectful and its okay for people to disagree. All I can do is share my first hand experience with the military and who I see as heros. So well done. They captured that sense of mahem. Being trapped literally in the middle of a war. You never (in other war films) get the sense the wear is going on around the soldiers. A sense of hopelessness . In other films the action is in front of you all the time. With the odd helicopter or jet fly over. But not like this. You're almost claustrophobic. That was how I felt the first time I watched this movie.
The audio...while decent could have been a few steps better. Like on Saving Private Ryan. Better audio mixing in the film and on the BluRay/4k BluRay discs. Demo worthy. BHD not as...but a great movie nonetheless.

I found myself watching this video for a second time 11 months later. What I love the most of this kind of movies is that all those actors are stars willing to act in supporting roles.
I'm not a book guy but the book far exceeds the movie. The author was invited to speak at some military thing. They asked the author his clearance level and he said "I'm the enemy, I'm a journalist". He did not have the security clearance to talk at that site. So they moved it across the street. Much of the dialog are direct quotes, either from the actual recordings of the AWACS plane above or from his personal interviews. WOW
Where's the scene when Grimes ambush Aidid alone at his base and say: Hello There.
The amount of times Grimes got hit by RPG and other explosives is just funny

The real life accounts of what happened are even more harrowing and heroic than this film. The soldiers who after making it back safely through the hell of all that fire, and willingly drove back out into it to rescue others, are incredible in their act of selfless courage. They are all heroes.
Fun fact : MALBATT Misi Bakara is sequel for this film, based on true story in Somalia 1991 about Black Hawk Down.

I've seen a lot of really great war movies, from "The Deer Hunter " to " Apocalypse Now " to you name it. But, " Black Hawk Down " ( along with " Saving Private Ryan " ) made me realize just how VITAL and VALUABLE all of our soldiers really are.
And it’s one of the most realistic war movies . The sound effects gave me goosebumps.

I can’t remember where I heard this, but as much as we value our soldiers, it also became the U.S’s most crippling war doctrine.
It meant that by having such high expectations when it came to casualties, it sent a message to our enemies that all they had to do was kill a few of our guys and we as a whole would run away.

This and Jarhead and my favorite modern day war movies!
Something that really works for me in this film, and shows how well shot it is, is that they constantly use camera shots to show how boxed in they are and how enemies are coming at them from all directions. The other is that the firefights aren't just cases of the bad guys blazing away and the good guys shooting with perfect accuracy - everyone is blazing, it's chaotic and hits are not guaranteed even at relatively close ranges which really sells the intensity, realism and under siege feel of the film for me.
William Fichtner played an awesome character in this movie, easily my favourite, and that's saying something as this cast was fucking stacked with talent

The first time I threw a training grenade in Army BCT, I stayed upright to watch the fuse go off. This was counter to the block of instruction we had just received, so the Drill Sergeant standing outside of the pit kicked my K-Pot to refresh my memory. Sometimes at night, when I am alone with my thoughts, I still feel that kick. Hooah.

I don't know who did the sound design for this film, but that BRAWWWWWRRRRRRR sound the helicopters make when they open fire is AWESOME.
I was there (offshore, aboard one of the USN amphibs) when we first went in, and again (aboard a different ship) when we pulled the UN out. Total clusterfuck from start to finish; we should never have gone into Somalia in the first place. An ill-defined mission, based on faulty intel, that was made worse by constant (and needless) mission creep, that benefitted no one.
People forget how bad Clinton's first term was. And Les Aspin was a disaster as SecDef.

I think I agree with Captain Steele's order. Under heavy fire, it is better to secure perimeter and stay together instead of splitting up.
Capt. Steele was a prima dona and an idiot. In this type of situation, fire and maneuver is paramount to survival. What Steele did created another rescue extraction. He wouldn’t take advice from a delta operator with more combat experience because he didn’t like delta operators and his ego balked at taking instruction from a man of lower rank.

Why did the Delta guy told him that he (and his Ranger chalks) should be going back to the base with the prisoners? It seems like he might have been right because the Rangers that went to the crash site endured a lot of wounded and casualties. Still, I doubt the Delta guys could hold off the growing crowd either.
Didn't really have much else of a choice. They were completely surrounded with many wounded, running out of ammo and it was night time in the dead center of the city. Splitting up and trying to retreat back to base at that point would have been a death sentence.
No, it was incorrect because the Deltas (as apparent later on) could move much faster to get to the crash site and secure it before the city came on top of them, rather than be bogged down with the convoy which ended up hitting roadblock after roadblock. And then Steele later insisted his Rangers stay with Delta Force which further bogged down the rescue operation.
The part when he said are you ok and he replied ok, means he is not wounded or dead we do this all the time😭, once in base during down time it just hits us, some will take days to sleep it out

Compared to the Rangers, they were. According to the book and interviews for documentaries, many of th Rangers had to be “encouraged” by the Delta guys to fight. Most of the Rangers were barely in the 20s, much younger than the Delta operators. On top of that, many of the Rangers shot at the Delta guys while they were in the target building, not identifying their targets.
I remember watching this on the news when I was in high school. It was really sad and maddening to see them drag those bodies through the streets. The movie isn’t 100% accurate but does a great job telling the story. Hard to believe it was nearly 30 years ago.

@@McPh1741 In a couple of different military books written by soldiers they all describe seeing SF guys like a bench player seeing a star player enter the gym kinda vibe and giggle how SF dudes have non-standard uniforms, often bearded and have completely new gears regulars have never seen before.

Actually, the movie shows that the NCOs plan was shit and resulted in the entire unit becoming combat ineffective. This idea that officers don't know shit is fine for enlisted guys sitting around bitching, but to pretend these NCOs correctly diagnosed the situation is simply laughable. In the real battle, everyone got their asses kicked due to bad tactics, route planning, training, etc. Even your precious NCOs.

@@angusmcculloch6653 Definitely, all units involved in this operation were basically caught in a situation they were totally unprepared for. Once the first chopper was shot down they lost the initiative and the entire goal of the mission was changed.
@@angusmcculloch6653 Sanderson's plan was for his small team of Deltas to quickly move to the crash site on their own, before the enemy could consolidate.
Steele's plan was for the entire ground forces to move together, the subtitles are wrong here, he actually says "WE'LL proceed to to the crash site together." Which is what they start out doing... But moving the entire group together slowed down their advance. And lead to the militia forces to converge on them. Which then lead to them getting bogged down and taking multiple casualties and stuck in place.
And then the kicker, the Deltas (and Grimes) end up going on their own anyway... _which is what Sanderson wanted to do in the first place._ But now, they had heavier resistance to contend with because the militia had time to move into position.
*_tldr:_** Delta SGT wanted to move quickly, Ranger CPT wanted to move in a group.*
