I remember being 10 years old, we'd just seen Gladiator in cinema (I'd told my parents it was the best film I'd seen up til that point), and my step-sister and I were on a car ride back from our weekly McDonalds kinda comatose/asleep from junk food. My parents were talking about Russell Crowe saying on TV how cheesy that line was and only he could have pulled it off, and how arrogant he was for saying that, but then also saying "well... it's true tbf- only he could pull that off that well".
Randomly vivid memory for me. It's true, at that time Russell Crowe was like a new breed of charismatic actor.

    • @andrewwaldock
      @andrewwaldock ปีที่แล้ว +14

Well said. Many leaders and in fact whole societies command through fear these days. And it is usually not fear of physical violence, but a palpable fearsome energy that tells people to stay in line, don't upset the apple cart, and being an outcast is worse than death.
As someone that has been (and probably still is) an outcast, no it is not. As a Stoic, I see every hardship I have endured as an opportunity to learn. And what I have learned is that people may be kept in line by fear, but they yearn for people & ideas that are unmovable and unbreakable in the face of whatever storm comes. Make sure your deeds align with your principles, and if they do: nothing made by man can stop you.

I know it's not how this scene goes in the movie, but I am especially touched by the short scene here where Maximus touches the soil and looks at the old war dog. The way the dog looks at him, this dog that has seen the same horrors as him. This dog that bears the same scars as him. This dog that knows this soil as well as him. A short glimpse of mutual understanding, of respect, and piety.

The end of 90's and the beginning of XXI-century was the best time for cinematography, don't try to change my mind.
The CGI wasn't perfect, but the atmosphere allowed you to feel every setting - Ancient Rome (Gladiator), Persia and Macedonia (Alexander), the Caribbean (Pirates of the Caribbean), World War II (Saving Private Ryan), or fantasy movies like Jurassic Park, Terminator, Waterworld and more, literally everything. They don't make good movies like this anymore. We get empty shells shot on a green screen made in a year, and in addition boring, devoid of depth, sense and emotions.
Btw. amazing montage, thank you for this video!

Saw a quote the other day and I feel like it fits this movie perfectly
“A king stood upon his throne with no heir so called forth his servants
    His finest general
    His younger brother
    His sisters son
And all his advisors kneeled before him
He stood silent and judged each one accordingly finally he stopped and went
    “Step forward plate-bearer”
His servant who stood at the door looked up and stood shocked
    “Come! come!”
    Said the king
Carefully and cautiously he eased forward till he was at the kings feet he kneeled and king raised him took off his crown and placed it within his hands
“It’s I should be kneeling to you now!”
    The king remarked
    The young servant scoffed
“But my lord I don’t want the crown I don’t know what to do with such power”
The king smiled and whispered into his ear
“That is why you are the only one deserving of it”

90s holliwood movie fiction. Being lowest in the hiererchy does not mean you will be just when you are on the top, it just means that you're at the bottom. If you're placed to the top you will have to navigate a responsibility you have no experience in. This is romantic but not true. However, if you find someone exceptional in the bottom of the hiererchy they should be given the chance of proving themselves to the top - as all others. Would require a lot of learning and reflections even if you have potential though.
